Latest Firefox update removes all my add-ons/extensions

I have Win XP Pro SR-3 & Firefox 28.0. I wanted to update to the latest Firefox version by going to Help/About/Check for updates. However, the new version does 2 things that I can't change:
1. It removed the sidebar that contained all my extensions & I can't find them. Can I restore the sidebar?
2. The color of the new tabs that are not active is the same color as the strip that they're on, so their very hard to read. Can I change the color of inactive tabs...or better yet, the strip that they're on?
I also have a 3rd general question. I had a lot of trouble getting to this forum. I had to go to a question that I asked a year ago & then ask a new question. I also couldn't logon to Mozillazine & don't know the difference between that forum & this one. Could you please enlighten me & tell me what the easiest way to first search & then ask a question?
Thank you in advance

While Mozilla is one company, it has several independent web sites.
If you want full access to a site, you need an account for each.

  • After updating to Firefox 8.01 all my add-ons are disabled & I have to manually reinstall those that still work after each reboot??

After updating to Firefox 8.0 & 8.01 all my add-ons were disabled.
I have to reinstall those that still can be enabled manually after each reboot. These, that I can reinstall, are:
    Download Helper 4.9.7/WOT 20111107/Adblock 1.3.10/DivX plus Web Player HTML5 2.1.2.145/
All my other add-ons are incompatible with this version of Firefox! This includes Ghostery which I particularly miss,
    This is annoying!

    Ghostery: Works with Firefox 3.5 - 11.0a1: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/
It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is a compatibility update available.

  • All (nearly) add-ons / extensions disappear after update to v15 then v16

This has happened to me twice now. After a FF update (first to v15?) all or most add-ons / extensions disappeared, didn't even appear in the menus. (At least I am sure my critical extensions (see below) were missing earlier. It has been awhile.) After trying the solutions posted in various topics I finally gave up and created a new profile. I installed my more critical add-ons, Firebug, Flash Firebug and Restartless restart. Everything was fine until the latest update to 16.0.1. Once again all add-ons disappear, including from the menus. Curiously "clear recent history" also seems to have been missing until I deleted the extension and compatibility files.
Going back to my previous profile, after deleting the extension and compatibility files and reloading FF I see that some add-ons now appear but not my critical ones.

    @cor-el,
So... With FF closed I deleted localstore.rdf, compatibility.ini, extenstions.* and addons.* files. Start FF, the files rebuild. No extensions appear so no change.
As a test I created a new profile and added extensions and of course, everything worked fine. Then I got slightly smart and restored the entire profile (and just that profile) from a backed up version before the FF update. Everything works again!
Conclusion: Something in the FF update process corrupted something other than the files we discussed above causing (nearly?) all add-ons to not work. So far it appears that whatever the update changed in the profile was not needed as restoring an older profile version seems to work fine.

  • Why o why does my cimputer say uopdayte now to latest Firefox Version and then say add ons like SKYPE etc will not work with new version . I di not understand .o

    as above

Many add-ons work only with a particular range of Firefox versions. After the upgrade, Firefox will attempt to find new compatible versions. This is not always possible.
To determine whether an add-on you can't live without has a version for Firefox 11, you can check the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ Add-ons site] or try this add-on to make that a little easier (I haven't tried it myself): [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/is-it-compatible/ Is It Compatible? :: Add-ons for Firefox].
By the way, many recent posts report problems with Skype add-ons, so you might want to research here if you notice any strange copy/paste problems.

  • Flash update messed up FF Add-ons and the Open New Tab button.

FF told me that I needed to update Flash, so I said OK. Whereupon all of my FF Add-ons disappeared. Seems that FF needed to check with the mother ship to find out if everything were compatible with this new Flash update--but the mother ship was not available (this has happened several times).
Why didn't FF check on the compatibility issues BEFORE getting the Flash update?!
I will remove Flash (did this in the past, and the lost functionalities were no big deal). I will also change the settings on FF so that the program won't do this again. (I periodically go see about FF updates myself and try to sit on FF while the updates are being done.)
BTW ... I had FF set to NO DOWNLOAD/UPDATE anything until/unless I have the OK. The past few weeks, I've gotten constant notes from FF telling me to get FF6.0. I was almost ready--but not quite ready--and yesterday FF updated itself. NO OK from me.
As I type this, I've finally gotten all of my FF Add-ons and other mods back. And it looks like my bookmark tabs are all squared-away again, too. (The AddNewTab button completely disappeared.)
So, this is no longer a question for you that could use an answer. Instead, I'd like you to pass my frustrations along to the development crew. I HATE the uncertainty/instability of my Firefox Add-ons and Stylish mods. (I'd rather just skip them.)
I understand that the Add-ons are not the work of Mozilla (not like the browser program itself, anyway) and that the job of getting everything to work together must be insanely difficult. So I'm not wanting to complain about the compatibility hassles here--I'm complaining about the need to watch FF carefully to make sure FF doesn't jump up and do something that I don't want. That and the fact that I have to remember that FF will change my system BEFORE checking to see if it's going to make a mess for me.
I only recently returned to Firefox and started using some of the Add-ons again. I love them. But I don't think I'll ever use more than 6 or so Add-ons because of the constant problems with updates like this mess today with Macropedia's Flash. The one thing I don't want in a browser is problems.
Thanks for your attention here ...
    Jack

I'm sorry to hear that you have so many issues. What version of Firefox were you using before?
The double title bar issue has been identified as an issue with the Tax Mix Plus extension but it doesn't affect everyone, it's an interaction with something else (not exactly clear what, although Norton Toolbar was mentioned in one thread).
There is a new version available that you could try. If Firefox is stable enough to do it...
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > "gear" icon > Check for Updates
If your beta version won't update, you could try installing [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ from the add-ons site].
More generally, could I suggest disabling as many extensions as you can live without for 24 hours, and re-enable them gradually? This should help isolate interactions between them. As you know, you can do that here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
Finally, regarding your old session, if you haven't closed Firefox, you might find a sessionstore.bak file in your profile folder that contains your old session. To easily access that folder, try
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Grab a copy of that file and save it somewhere outside the folder because it is overwritten when you close Firefox. Got to run, but if you find one with an appropriate date, someone can help you restore it.

  • I updated Adobe flash and when I re-opened firefox all of my bookmarks, add-ons, extensions, history were gone. How do I retrieve?

When updated Adobe flash, I was asked to close the browser window. I complied and when I re-opened, firefox was different and all of my stuff was gone.

go to Tools Menu -> Add-ons -> Extensions section -> Disable and Remove the add-ons that look unwanted or suspicious -> Enable trustworthy add-ons -> Restart Firefox.

In both SAFE and Regular browser windows, the UNINSTALL button is grayed out.
I have tried in SAFE MODE, as well as the Help>troubleshooting Information>Application Basics>Profile Directory>Open Containing Folder,,,(looked, nothing there),,,,in both SAFE and Regular browser windows.

You can uninstall (remove) the Java Console extensions, you do not need them to run Java applets.

Why is Firefox intruding and sending updates when auto updates are turned off? This constant updating wreaks havoc with add-ons
Why is Firefox violating my computer?

I left "automatic updates" for Firefox UNCHECKED and left download when updates are found UNCHECKED. " Ask me wha I want to do" is CHECKED.
In English, that means don't automatically update and if updates are found ASK.
It does NOT mean ignore all the instructions and download!

I can reenable them but FF will disable them on the next startup. I uninstalled version 13 and installed version 12. Problem gone! So I'm still using version 12 and am afraid to update to version 13.
This problem began when I was trying to research and fix a problem (no history all-of-a-sudden) so it probably was something I caused. Can't recall everything I did though.
So: Does the addon problem I described have a solution? If so, I'll update my version 12 to version 13. Please respond.....

  • Every time I turn on my computer and open Firefox all my add ons are open in tabs and I have to enable all of them all the time, how can I fix this?

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
It should be necessary to confirm that you want to install third-party extensions.<br />
This usually indicates that other software is messing with files in the profile folder and is corrupting them.<br />
This can either be the extensions.sqlite database file or the prefs.js that stores first run prefs (the first is the most likely cause).
Do you have any cleanup software running on a schedule that may be causing this?
Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left end side of the Search Bar ("Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.
If this hasn't helped then also try to delete the addons.sqlite file.

  • The latest Firefox update, which I have installe on my macbook Os 10.68, seems full of bugs

I am so fed up with the latest version of firefox. It is incredibly slow, when I enter one url in the web bar it will send me bouncing off to a random address that is on my bookmards toolbar. Before the latest firefox update, I had already noticed it had become ridiculously slow. I read some support articles and it suggested uninstalling some add ons and reinstalling them. I did so, i even got rid of the ones I felt I no longer needed them. It fast slighter faster for maybe a day, then just as slow again. In the mean time, I installed google crome browser, b/c I have a blog with blogger, and there are just some things you can't do with blogger unless you're using Chrome. By accident, I discovered there were several things I could all of a sudden do online that I couldn't do with Firefox (reply to messages on a forum I post on, access a free menu planning feature on Canadian Living Magazine's website).
After their latest update, everything has gotten worse! That's when it got even slower, and started bouncing me around the web. I even cleared the cache, which was incredibly annoying since I had so many places all over the web that I had set to be automatically signed in to, and I spent an entire day having to recover all these passwords, and clearing the cache did nothing to fix the problem in any way. I will wait two days for a response from this forum. The only reason I haven't ditched Firefox completely is because of it's adblock feature. The adds on Chrome drive me nuts. If I have not received any suggestions that seem worth my time and energy, I'm uninstalling Firefox, and might consider returning to it when they come up with a new update.

Well, that's pretty made my decision final. I'm ditching firefox for good. The only reason I was willing to use it at all, was because of Ad block. I already tried uninstalling, disabling add ons, like I mentioned previously. The whole proceeding with Firefox safe mode thing sounds like way too much trouble than it's worth. Since I already have Safari Browser, that came with my Macbook, and I need Chrome Browser for using Blogger, I'm uninstalling Firefox and I'll just use those two. Chrome Browser annoys me enough of the time that I don't want to use it as my primary browser. Safari is fairly good though, especially if I only use it occasionally, that means if runs very quickly. Thanks for the advice. It's too bad. When I started using Firefox about 4 years ago, I loved it. Now it drives me absolutely crazy. I'll just start gathering all my passwords that are stored in Firefox and then uninstall it.
