Latest Security Update.... WHAT IS GOING ON!?

Seems like tons of people are having problems. My main issue is that my dock is freezing whenever I right click on anything in it. The menu pops up but then the whole dock freezes and I have to click around/wait a few minutes before everything comes back to normal. I do so much stuff with app menus in the dock, this is beyond frustrating!

In the update, something called CoreGraphics, or
"Quartz" is updated. Quartz is what makes the display

My suggestion: Reinstall the update and make sure you
install the Intel version.
Oh, boy! Am I glad I stayed with PPC for a while!
I only wanted OS 9 compatibility, but it looks like I did the right thing.
"Never buy version 1.0"
I'll keep my G4's and G5's as long as I can.
BTW, I have and old Indiana Johns b/w game that runs on a G5, as long as you put it in 256 grays display (in the OS9 panel)...
Intel... Tie'!! (for the italian folks in this list)

I tried a reset and it did the trick.

On a Mac running v10.7.2, the only way to reinstall Safari is to reinstall OS X using OS X Recovery.
Safari 5.1.1 is for Snow Leopard. It will not run on a Mac with v10.7 installed.

  • After latest security update my MacBook is not finding any network. My network is ok, iPad and iPhone have no problems, but laptop is for all practical purposes turned into typing machine. Has somebody encountered similar problem? What to do?

After latest security update my MacBook is not finding any network and I think is not really turning wifi on. Has anyone encountered similar problem?

Checked the older discussion of the same type and found solution, well kind of... Thanks to other people who tried it, I just cannot remember their names at the moment. So, the solution for me was to turn off the firewall in the system preferences and suddenly lo and behold there was my network.

  • Latest security update and the disappearance of my external drive

I'm sure you're going to tell me that one has nothing to do with the other, but after running the latest security update, the Iomega MiniMax external drive that's been connected to my TiBook for the last 3 years has all of a sudden disappeared from my desktop.
System profiler sees it, Disk Utilities sees it. But there are a couple of things bugging me:
    - I'd never paid attention before, but both the System profiler and DU indicated that SMART is not supported
    - When I ran DU (off the OSX install disk) to try to repair the HD, I got the following message:
    +Invalid node structre+
    +Volume check failed+
(these 2 lines in red type)
+Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit+
    (this in bold, red type)
    +1 HFS volume checked+
+1 volume could not be repaired because of an error+
I think that was in red, too, but can't swear to it, as I'm totally rattled by now.
Now, there is no system on the Iomega, nothing but precious photos and music (since the original HD on this TiBook could only hold 30 Gb), and I'm at a loss as to why all of a sudden I can't access it. Whenever I've come back from a trip, I just plug the external back in (via firewire and usb), and it would just show up, as if nothing had happened.
Any ideas, any help would be, as usual, most appreciated.
    Thank you all.

I realize I'm getting 'way off this thread, but wanted to post back. I brought the Iomega to work, plugged it into my iMac and… nothing. Running DU gave me the same results as posted above. Then, for want of a better idea, I pulled out the install disk for the iMac, started up off that and ran DU.
Guess what? It went through its verifications, came up with problems and then proceeded to repair the external. And that wonderful little orange icon was there on my desktop at startup!
There shouldn't be any difference; my guess is it just happened to pick that time to mount. Sometimes a HD with issues will not mount 10+ times in a row, then, for whatever reason, it does on the eleventh try.
There's a new folder in the Iomega now, called "lost+found", weighing in at a little over a Mb and full of files ending with ".nib". Any idea what those are and if I need to keep them?
Hmmm, Google search turns up this from wiki:
Interface Builder is a software development application for Apple's Mac OS X operating system. It is part of Xcode (formerly Project Builder), the Apple Developer Connection developer's toolset. Interface Builder allows Cocoa and Carbon developers to create interfaces for applications using a graphical user interface. The resulting interface is stored as a .nib file, short for NeXT Interface Builder, or more recently, as a .xib file.
    Do you use Xcode?
Another hit mentions iPhone, and another Corel. Don't know what to make of it in your case. Can you open any of the files? Any have same name as your data? Creation dates?
I shall now proceed to back up before reformatting.
    Good plan.
And check out the cost of a replacement here (they're a good bit higher than in the States.
Ask yourself what your data is worth, and after it's gone, what you would have spent to have retained it. My guess is the answer would be a lot more than the cost of a HD.
    Do I want a SATA?
Nope, TiBook doesn't have that interface.
I liked this model because it also worked as a hub… There are so many flavors out there now!
    Indeed.
er, ahem, that's a sheepish "yes".
    'Nuff said.
A while back, thanks to you and other forum members, I'd gathered up the courage to swap out the original HD for the biggest one the PB could take, and had always meant to to a "backward" backup of the stuff that was on the external — or copying photos onto CDs. Needless to say, the task got put off until this scare. Won't be doing that again.
I considered myself "lucky" the first time I lost data, as it wasn't too, too important, but it taught me a lesson I've never forgotten.
So, once again, thanks for the hand-holding (you had also talked me through/encouraged me to deal with the tight hinges on the TiBook).
You're welcome. Together with RAM and HD, that was the best thing I ever did for my TiBook.
    Love this forum!
    We aims to please!

  • Won't Restart after latest Security Update Download.

Yesterday I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I did what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.  I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball.  I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out.  I tried to use an older System disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it.  I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail.  Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail.  Nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

No one on the Apple site could help me so I took it into Tekserve in NYC.  I was afraid that I was going to have to replace the entire Hard Drive but they finally managed to get it working.  In the end for $60 they reinstalled the System, keeping all of my files intact.  I have a bootable external drive, but I was happier not to have to use that.  Apparently it was a multilevel problem, and not something anyone can fix themselves. If you look at the Apple discussions quite a few people had problems with that update.....
    Best of luck,
    Stephen

    Welcome to the Discussions,
Only one idea, go to Nortons Site and download the UnInstaller,
Norton has shown itself to be Unhappy Camper with anything MAC.

The version of “Adobe Flash Player” on your system does not include the latest security updates and has been blocked. To continue using “Adobe Flash Player”, download an updated version from Adobe’s website.

You haven't actually asked a question, but as stated you should only download Flash Player directy from Adobe.
Nor have you said what version of OS X and Safari you are running.
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3 or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.0.1.152 is for Lion.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

  • HELP: Latest Security Update hangs during startup

I did two updates, the latest Security Updates for Tiger OSX on my G4, mirror door and also the latest iTunes. After all the downloads it asked me to reboot. Now I get the gray Apple with an endless spinning clock.
I did repair disk permissions via holding down "C" button and also did the fsck or whatever command in terminal mode. Still it hangs.
I'm desperate need of help here. I'm posting this on my iPhone, as my only computer now won't boot.
Can I go back to another version (Tiger only DVD) or how I run off the CD without asking for installation?
To make matters worse, my external HD took a dump and I lost all my iTunes library. All I wanted to do was update my iPhone to 3.0, and now Im just hosed.
Does anyone know if this update does this and what to do? Or am I just unlucky? weeping.....
please post solutions that I can easily access on my small iPhone screen. thanks.
    -G4 single 1.25, Mirrored Door, 768MB RAM, 80Gb HD (8 GB free),

Hi applrob, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Does anyone know if this update does this and what to do? Or am I just unlucky?
99.9% of the time it means there was some pre-existinng corruption. I'll mention all the steps, but I thing the bolded end section is what we'll end up needing.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
*If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...*
    *http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120*
*Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.*

  • MAC WILL NOT REBOOT AFTER DOWNLOADING LATEST SECURITY UPDATE

I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I patched up what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail, maybe nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hello
It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".

  • Does reapplying 10.4.11 combo update negate the latest security updates?

I've reapplied the 10.4.11 combo update in an attempt to trouble shoot some problems I've been having. My question is, "Does reapplying 10.4.11 combo update negate the latest security updates?" I've checked my computer using the "Software Update" option, and I'm given the message that I'm up to date. But that may be due to the fact that there's a receipt of the security update in my receipt's folder.

    Steve:
If the Combo update was downloaded previous to the last security update being available it will not have included the security update. If the Combo update was downloaded after the security update was available, it will have included the latest security update. As new updates become available, the Combo update is updated so that it includes the latest updates. If you are concerned that the security update may not have been included in the Combo update, or you are sure that you downloaded the Combo update a while previous to the availability of the latest security update you can either:
    1. Download the stand alone security update and install it over what is already on your computer, or
    2. Download the current Combo update and install it.
In either case, remember to Repair Disk Permissions in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility before and after installation.
    Cheers

  • "Foreign" text in Safari after latest security update

After reading several posts, I've tried all suggestions, but still get wierd-looking type (maybe Russian), which is also compressed and unlegible. I've tried: reloading Safari, throwing away Safari preference, removing Times Phonetic and Helvetica Fractions fonts, repairing permissions - yet still get the same results.
I can switch to AOL (within Safari) and same thing happens; logging on to AOL outside Safari is fine - no type wierdness.
This all started following installation of the latest security update. Any other suggestions on what I can try?
    Thanks,

  • IMac won't "wake-up" after installing latest security update

I have a fairly new iMac G5 2GHz, and just installed the latest security update yesterday(4/1/06). Since that update, everytime my computer goes to sleep, I can't wake it up.
The power light is on and I hear the computer running... I can even hear the error "bonk" when I try and hit a bunch of keys, but still won't wake up. Was NEVER a problem until yesterday and I haven't installed anything else.
    Thanks in advance

  • MacBookPro Freezes after Installing Latest Security Update 2006-003

After downloading and installing the latest security update 2006-003, MacBook Pro freezes when trying to do anything. Seems to do ok in safe mode but did freeze when trying to verify disk with Disk Utility. (did not try to repair as I am out of town at a motel without Tiger disks). Any suggestions before calling apple?
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Since my post, I think I have solved the problem. At least MyMacBook is working ok so far. What I did is started up in safe mode (for the third time) then I went through the "Library" and looked for stuff that looked like it wouldn't work on a MacBook. This included some Norton Utility things. Also went through preferences and Application Support and did the same thing. By the way I had transferred all this stuff from my old Mac using the transfer app and connecting the two with firewire.
Anyway, it's been working for about an hour. I'll keep this post open for a couple of days to see if it keeps working.

  • Did latest security update, now emac won't start

Hello, please help. I'm only have one mac, so I'm desperate. I have an emac running os 10.4. I just performed the latest security update (and itunes and quicktime) now the mac won't start. I get to the apple logo and the spinning/loading icon and it stays there forever. I started from my original disc and did a disc utility check, and everything is allright with the hard drive. It was working perfectly until I installed the update and did the required restart!

  • IChat no workee after latest Security Update

Just downloaded the latest Security Update and voila, I now have the generic app icon for ichat, software
version 4.0.9, and not working in my Applications folder.
    Now what?
    Rook

We can get you to Reinstall iChat.
This will still need an Update to be run as the Install Disk version is likely to be several versions behind the OS and they must match.
    Instructions
You will need the Easy Way as it is called.
iChat only gets it's Updates when the OS is updated so the version you install will the version that came with the first OS you had. (most likely OS 10.5 base level and therefore iChat version 4.0)
There has not been an iChat Update in every OS update but in OS 10.5.8 it has got to version 4.0.8.
You will need to Download and Install this COMBO version of the Update.
"Doing the COMBO" this way circumvents the fact that Software Updates keeps records of what it has Updated and will not run it again even though iChat needs it.
This should get iChat working again.
I say should as 10.5.8 with the last two updates does report iChat to be at version 4.0.9 in some views.
I have done the basic Reinstall but the Security Update does complicate things a little bit. (I am not sure if in this case we can miss off the last Security Update and have a base iChat 4.0.8 working with what is in effect 10.5.8+)
    I hope this helps.
