LCD Advice / Sharp Aquos "Banding"

Trying to decided b/w: Toshiba Regza 46XV645U and Sharp Aquos LC46D85U.
I've heard about color "banding" issues on the Sharp. Has this been corrected, or is it still an issue.
What's the 411 on Toshiba? Any known issues? I haven't read too many reviews on it, but what I have read has been positive.

I don't know if my model of Sharp is the Sharp you listed, but I have not seen any sort of color banding in my 46" AQUOS.

Progressive Scan mode (DVD on Sharp Aquos LCD)

I want to use the Mac Mini as a DVD player on my 32" Sharp Aquos. Does anyone know if the Mac Mini supports progressive scan mode?
Also, has anyone run into issues connecting to the 32" Sharp Aquos LCD TV?

Along the lines of progressive scan vs. interlaced... I've noticed while playing video from Quicktime I can make a selection to pick which one I prefer. I've got a project that I created in iMovie and I notice that if I were to share (export) a clip using the expert settings I can chose whether it is interlaced or progressive. However, when accessing those same .mov files in iDVD I don't see any settings that indicate whether the final DVD will be interlaced or progressive. From the looks of the footage viewing it on my computer it looks like it is interlaced. How can I create a DVD with this iMovie footage that ends up displaying as progressive?

Getting full 1080p to a Sharp Aquos 42'' HD LCD TV

Okay, I've been struggling and struggling with this one for a good month or two and I have pretty much use up all my lifelines except the apple forums
I have a Sharp Aquos 42'' LCD HDTV that is 1080p capable, and has 2 HDMI inputs. I have been using my 17'' Powerbook G4 via a DVI > HDMI cable and it works great EXCEPT that it is displaying the desktop with about an inch black border around the entire screen. I have heard of trying to tweak the timing settings within a program SwitchResX, and have read some other threads about other people successfully being able to get a 1080p full screen with their Sharp Aquos (45'') as well. I don't know the exact settings I need for my particular TV and I was hoping to get some answers here.

Now I have 1080p resolution on my 37"" which exactly matches the tv screen, whow what a fantastic picture. The solution is:
* Press "Wide modes" button on the remote control and select "Underscan" for the selected HDMI input source.
* Open the Mac preferences, select displays, in the sharp display select options, then check the overscan checkbox.
* Install SwitchResX and select a 1080 resolution without interlace.
Hope this works on a 42" Sharp lcd too.

Sharp AQUOS 32" LCD TV

We purchased a Sharp AQUOS 32" LCD TV, model # LC32D40U. The date purchased was June 15, 2006 at the Best Buy in Janesville, Wisconsin. We now reside in Old Town, ME. This TV was defective from the start, however, my husband was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma and went through a year of treatment, including a stem cell transplant. 10 days before his diagnosis we had an accepted offer on this home in Maine. So much has occurred that we never had a chance to get the TV in for repair. We dealt with it not working properly. It would go on, run for a while, then the screen would go black. I'd turn it off and tap it, then turn it back on and it would work for hours. It has progressively worsened to the point of no picture anymore. Can we do anything although it has been almost 3 years now? In these 3 years, we had to move to Maine, then my husband went through surgery, my brother is dying from colorectal cancer, my daughter in law just lost her parents in a serious auto accident, and so many other horrible things have occurred. Can someone help us with this? Thank you! BTW, we did take it into our local store, but I'm praying the outcome will be "no charge!" The young man that took our TV claimed he would do what he could for us. Very polite!!!

If your TV and Laptop both have the VGA socket on i.e it looks the same at both ends, then any VGA monitor cable will do the job, no need for any extras. Easiest thing is to do if possible is pinch a cable off sometning else to test. These cables are not a lot of money so don't be foolded into buying one of those super premium pro cables, it's really not necessary.
Audio wise you only have the headphone jack out on the laptop, and the tv probably has component in (RCA sockets) thats the norm anyway so you need to get a Phono to 3.5mm Stereo Jack lead of sufficint length.

Or if you have a Stereo system especially a surround one then you can rig the audio to that which will be even better
You will need to check the back of the TV or the manual to confirm this. If you took the manual and possibly the laptop into any decent TV store they should be able to sort it out.

Trouble using my sharp aquos as a display for my PB

I have a 1 GHz Powerbook G4 with 512 MB DDR SDRAM running Mac OS X 10.3.9. I have recently purchased a 32" sharp aquos LCD Television with the intent of being able to hook up my power book. The sharp instruction manual tells me to hook it up with a DVI cable (as well as a mini jack for sound). I purchased a mini dvi to dvi converter thingy and connected to the LCD (I have not used a mini jack since I thought that would only affect the sound and, for now, I just want the picture).
There is a compatability chart in the sharp manual that gives me three mac options; 1) 13" VGA, 2) 16" SVGA, 3) 19" XGA. I do not know what these are refering to so I chose the 13 " option. It tells me to adjust my resolution to 640x480, Horizontal Frequecy (which I cannot find) to 34.9 kHz and vertical frequency to 67 Hz.
Although my power book recognizes the sharp LCD, I get no image on the television. I called sharp customer service and, aside from verifieing that I was using the correct input channel, they couldnt help me.
I am about a millimeter from returning the television unless someone can help me!

I have the Sharp Aquos LC32D7U and have tried connecting my 15" PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz to it using a DVI cable. I don't think I got a cable with a mini DVI to DVI converter--the plug is the same on both ends and fits my PB and the Sharp LCD either way. Anyway, I'm having the same trouble as you. My PB recognizes the Sharp LCD as being connected, but the Sharp displays a black screen. The input info on the Sharp LCD screen shows "---X---" in the upper right corner where I'd expect some sort of connection information and below that "--Hz" as though nothing is connected. Incidentally the sound works fine through the Sharp using a stereo mini plug. I've tried adjusting all my monitor settings from resolution to Hz and have tried mirroring and not mirroring. Nothing works, although my PB clearly thinks it's displaying on the Sharp because, when mirroring is off, I cannot access the Sharp LCD video setup options since they're displayed on the Sharp LCD where I can't see them.
I wonder if it would be possible to use a DVI-HDMI adaptor and connect the PB to the HDMI input. Have you tried that? I'll be curious to hear how it works, or if you have any other ideas. It certainly is frustrating. If I come up with any solutions, I'll be sure to let you know.
I'm keeping my Aquos regardless of whether or not I get it to work with my PB, since it fits perfectly into a wall unit I'm housing it in and it's primarily used as a tv anyway.

DVI or VGA Connection For Sharp Aquos??

I've got an older Sharp Aquos, specifically the LC37G4U. Previously owned a Mini G4, 1.42 GHZ. The best I could do imagewise was with a DVI connection and the Aquos and Mini set to 1280 x 768. This resulted in an image cropping of approximately 1/2 inch on the right and left sides of the screen. I lived with it for a few years. I recently upgraded with a sweet Mini Duo Core 1.83 GHZ, 2 Gig of RAM, 7,500 RPM Seagate HD, etc. The computer is great, but with the DVI connection, it appears to default to the old 1280 x 768 setting, with the same exact image cropping. The maximum resolution on the LCD is 1366 X 768, and I'd like to attempt to do better as far as the cropping goes. Has anyone out there tried the VGA connection alternative? Or if anyone has any ideas, I would be forever in your debt. Thanks All!

I have a sharp lcd tv as well, and as far as I know, if you connect the mini to it using DVI (you shouldn't really use anything else) the mini will default to the tv's resolution. I swap my mini from monitor to tele depending on what I'm using it for, and everytime it automatically fixes it's display settings to match whatever is connected to it. Hopefully this is the case for you too, try it out.

Apple TV and 42 inches of Sharp Aquos goodness

I'm considering the purchase of an apple TV, but I'm hoping that someone can verify that it'll work on a Sharp Aquos LC-42D62U.
Also, I'm assuming that anything I purchase with iTunes will broadcast up to 1080i -- Is this correct?

FWIW, it is my opinion that outputting a 720p
at 1080i produces a lesser quality than outputting
it at 720p and letting the tv scale the picture.
I imagine this depends on the TV. As you point out, if the TV doesn't have a native resolution of at least 1080 lines, the image will have to be scaled twice. However, if it does have 1080 native resolution (as do the Sharp Aquos D62 models), this may not be necessary, so it becomes a question of which (if either) scaler is superior.
Interlaced to progressive conversion doesn't require any scaling, just a buffer to hold lines so they can be displayed twice. However, I think some progressive scan TV's attempt to improve on this with various motion adaptive interpolations -- not quite magic but potentially a subtle quality improvement in how well fast motion is rendered. (I do not know if the Sharp model has this feature.)
So my advice is to try both output formats & see which looks best to you.

Duo or Solo for a Sharp Aquos

OK, time to get down to brass tax. Ive been reading around here for awhile and its time to pull the trigger on a Mini.
I need a Mini capable of running 1366 X 768 to my Sharp Aquos 37 inch LCD. I know I will have to use a third party app to get the resolution exact but my question is which setup will work best.
Im deciding between at Core Solo with 1 Gig RAM and a Core Duo with 512 MB RAM, money being the main obstacle.
I plan to connect my 250G Lacie external drive to the Mini for streaming music and video (HD included) to my entertainment system. And I am going to either use the DVI or HDMI connection on the Sharp.
Other than that, the Mini will be used for surfing, e-mail, etc. Nothing too intensive. I realize that a Duo with 1Gig would be optimal, but I cant quite spend that much right now. What will I lose performance wise if I dont have the Duo, I am mainly concerned with video quality for HD.

Of course it doesn't. But you can buy an adaptor from HDMI to the Mini-DisplayPort port on the computer.

Using a DVI HDMI cable with my Sharp Aquos LC-52D62U 1080p

I have a Mac Mini Intel proc with 4GB RAM (max RAM).
I'm trying to get it to work with my Sharp Aquos LC-52D62U 52" TV. The TV supports 1080p native, and the mini has had no issues connecting to this TV before. I just re-installed 10.6 (with all updates) and it does not want to connect.
I have a direct DVI > HDMI cable going from the Mini directly to the back of the TV. I tested other devices on that TV input and the TV works fine. I'm also convinced that the cable is fine as it worked before the re-install of the system.
I can see the Mac Mini using screen sharing on my Mac Pro, so I can make changes to the configuration over the network. The screen settings on the Mini are set to "1080p (Television)" just like they were when it all worked fine. But the TV screen is black. No picture at all.
What can I do about this?

Hello Mac Mini world. I tried to connect my new Mac Mini to a 2 year old 32" Insignia Flat Screen HDTV through HDMI for hours however there was always part of the screen cut off even after adjusting both the resolution ratio on TV and Mini. After 3 calls to Insignia TV and Apple Support nobody had a definitive solution for me and was mainly told to live with it! One person from Applecare did half heartedly suggest trying a VGA connection instead in spite of lower quality. I went to the MAC store and they were confused as were the people at Best Buy but I reluctantly bought the MINI VIDEO PORT CABLE + VGA CABLE at Best Buy and to my surprise IT WORKED AND LOOKS PERFECT and automatically adjusts to fit any setting of computer resolution LIKE MAGIC. I have never posted but this seemed like good info as I read through a lot of blogs yesterday trying to resolve this issue. AGAIN THE SOLUTION IS TO TRY THE VGA CONNECTION. -chuck

OSX 10.9.1 Compatibility issue with Sharp Aquos PN-L702B and PN-L802B

I have Mac Mini's connected to the Sharp Aquos PN-L702B and PN-L802B touch screens and after updating to 10.9.1 am experiencing what appears to be a compatibility issue with the Sharp TPM driver and the OSX 10.9.1.
Everything works perfectly previously on 10.8.4 and 10.8.5. I did not test on 10.9.0 as I went straight to 10.9.1. Anyone else having this problem? Any thoughts on resolution?

OK so perserverance seems to have helped here - i used the cmd R function on start up to get to the page where i can re install OS X Lion - Safari now working.
However i have Office 2011 for MAC and now Excel wont start so i will post on another thread for help with this

Mac Mini + Sharp Aquos: Signal is not compatible? HELP

I am trying to get an Intel based mac mini to display on Sharp Aquos LC-45GX6U TV. I am using a dvi-to-dvi cable.
When initially connected, it worked fine, outputting at 1280x768 at 60Herz. It is not the native resolution for that TV, but close enough to display OK. I tried to play around with resolutions and as soon as I switched to another res, the TV showed a black screen with a message "signal is not compatible with this input". The funny thing is that when restarting the mac, it shows the boot screen fine with 1280x768 at 60hz shown in the right top corner of the TV. However, as soon as it boots, it goes back to the black screen with the dreaded message.
I have tried connecting other monitor(s) and TVs (all of which work fine) and then changing the resolution back to 1280x768, then reconnecting to Sharp Aquos. It doesn't work.
I have tried clearing PRAM and NVRAM - it doesn't work. Still gives the same message.
I tried deleting plist files on the mac (which supposedly save monitor settings) - it doesn't work.
I tried booting it in safe mode and it worked worked, if you reboot in normal mode, it goes back to the dreaded messaged. I then tried going back to safe mode and playing with resolution there. Once I did this, it showed the black screen with the message in safe mode and now the safe mode does not work either.
Please help!

Probably the best thing to do at this point will be to trash the preferences file(s) associated with displays. In /Library/Preferences there should be a file labeled com.apple.windowserver.plist. Throw it in the trash. Also, for however many user accounts are on the mini, there should be files in /Users/name/Library/Preferences/ByHost that are named com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxx.plist where xxxxxx is a hexidecimal string of letters and numbers and where name is the name on the account. Throw all of those files in the trash as well, then restart the mini.
When OS X restarts and finds those files missing from their expected location, it will generate fresh copies with factory default values. That should give you a fresh start with your Aquos. Throwing away the .plist files described will also cause the loss of any custom color calibrations you might have done, or any other display specific preferences that may have been stored.

Unable to connect Macbook Pro to Sharp Aquos TV through thunderbolt HDMI

I have a brand-spanking new Macbook pro 15" Retina with Thunderbolt
A new moshi HDMI connector, and new MediaBridge hdmi cable connected to my Sharp Aquos TV and it's as if its not plugged in.
I've read a lot of helpful sites with instructions on how to do this and this just isn't working.
What am I doing wrong?

Macbook to Sharp Aquos

I am trying to connect my MacBook to a Sharp Aquos with a VGA cable (Mini VGA from the Apple Store and a VGA cable from the Mini to the TV). When I plug the Mini VGA in my MAC, the screen goes blue, and when I change the display settings, I can see my TV. However, my TV stays black!
Can you help?

What resolution are you sending to the TV? What other resolutions have you tried? Is mirroring on or off? Try off. Is the TV set to the correct input?

Adding a Sharp Aquos 51" as a third display

Hi all. I am running a prepress department and we just purchased a 51" Sharp Aquos TV for a third display for customers to view our Illustrator files when they come in. I have a couple questions about this.
1) We have Mac Pros with two monitors running off the ATI card. Can we get another card for the TV and what connectors would we need to get it going as soon as possible?
2) What else can we run on this third monitor (DVDs, iDVD movies/Final Cut Express movies)?

1) You can purchase an additional ATi X1900 XT for the MP you want to connect the TV to. All of the cables required will be in the box (assuming you buy an Apple MP version). You could buy an Nvidia 7300 GT although mismatching cards is not recommended by Apple.
To try it you can always rip out the ATi card from another MP and bang it in. Be aware that you will need to modify the PCIe bandwidth configuration and you MUST use Slot 2. This is the only other slot that can handle the power requirements of the X1900 XT.
2) You can display anything you would otherwise be able to on any other display. It'll just be another display.
