Leopard and Maxtor One Touch III Turbo - changing RAID setup

Hi-
So I just picked up a Maxtor One Touch III Turbo (1.5TB) - installed the Maxtor One Touch Manager, and have tried to change the RAID Setup to Raid 1.
The Maxtor OneTouch Manager software does not respond - it is set by default to RAID 0 (not ideal).
I installed the update to the software from Maxtor (now Seagate) - but still no dice.
Has anyone had any success using the Maxtor One Touch Manager to change the HD from RAID 0 to RAID 1 on Leopard?
Thanks.

Ok so I have not received a response from Seagate yet but after some additional reading in the forums I decided to plug my drive into an iMac, that I have not yet upgraded to Leopard, and BAM it works fine.
All I installed was the updated Intel version of the OneTouch Manager, not the entire CD. The RAID change works perfect and all tests passed.
It appears that it is just not compatible with Leopard.
The only concern I have is when that when I upgrade my iMac and then not have the ability to test the drives on my MacBook Pro if one of the drives appears to or goes bad.
I will still follow up with Seagate and if anything comes of it I will let you know.

  • Maxtor One Touch III won't Mount

Similar problem to others. Hard drive won't mount on computer despite being able to identify it within the Airport utility. I have tried numerous suggestions already listed including: Hard Resetting multiple times the Express, Reformating Hard Drive, Restarting computer, Using different computers. My external hard drive WILL MOUNT if I do a direct USB connection into the computer.

I just set up my new AirPort Extreme Base station,
and I can confirm that it DID mount my 500 GB Maxtor
One-Touch III which I purchased this week.
    I am using 'n' only on 5GHz.
I had to open up the AirPort Disk Utility. Then a
window popped up asking for a password. I used the
password that I set to make changes to the Airport
base station - NOT the password you use to access the
    network.
I am copying stuff to it now. I was hoping it would
be faster, to be honest. 2GB has taken 13:30 to
transfer. According to my math....thats about
    2.5MB/sec.
Thank you for the response. I am unfortunately am not asked for a password. I am not however using your configuration as I have an older laptop that does not have a 'n' card.

  • Maxtor One Touch III not showing up on Mac OSX or Windows

ok so i have this Maxtor one touch III external hard drive that i used to use with my XP computer a few years ago... its 500 GB. so i plug it in to my Mac and install the software and it doesn't show up on my desktop or my disk utility. although, it does show up in my system profiler. so, it didn't work for mac... then i went onto my parallels account that has windows 7 on it and it still doesn't show up. what can i do to fix this?

    Hi,
all this, with the exception of the Maxtor software, should indicate a no-problem with that HD.
Personally I have always avoided the provided software, since it is not needed for external HDs.
If you have access to a Windows PC try connecting the HD there and see what comes up.
And if you don't have valuable files on that HD, you might repartition it there as well.
Could be a rare case of a 'dynamic disk' http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314343/en-us which is something that Macs can't handle.

  • What format should I use for Maxtor  One Touch III external hard drive

I'm not sure if I'm on the right forum section, but hopefully you can help. I just got a Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive with the firewire 400/usb 2.0 port. I installed the cd and followed the manual and it told me to format it. I went to disk utility and went to the "erase" section, but now it wants me to choose the type of format: mac os extended (case-sensitive), mac os journaled, mac os (case-sensitive, journaled) and so on.... Can anyone tell me what those formats mean/do, and what is the best one to use? Thanks!

Case sensitive is really if you are using some old UNIX programs that you have brought the source over to OS X and compiled them. And the UNIX programs have to expect a case-sensitive file system.
I'm betting this isn't the case... or you'd know what a case sensitive file system is.
    So go with HFS+ Journaled

Need more Ext HD storage for iTunes on my MBPro Is anyone using a MAXTOR ONE TOUCH III 1TB 1000GB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE this drive on MacBookPro, is it any good? Advise

The Maxtor one-touch models, comes with a EMC Retrospect startup item to run its backup software. I tend to disable this functionality, as it often is not updated for the operating system actually being run and can cause problems with setting up. Instead, I use Shirt-Pocket Superduper for backing up. I'm not sure the Maxtor is bootable on a MacBook Pro, but when you first get it, you'll want to reformat it with Disk Utility to have a GUID partition for optimized backing up for the MacBook Pro.
If you plan to use it with a Windows machine, you'll not be able to use it for full backing up, but at least data files will store on it, if you format it FAT32. Your alternative is still to format it GUID, but get MacDrive by Mediafour for your Windows machine to be able to read the drive, or network it use the built-in networking of the Mac as described here:

  • HELP Maxtor One Touch III 1TB External Fails after upgrade to 10.5.7

    Hello,
I was using a Maxtor One Touch III for my iTunes music (over 400gb) and when I upgraded to 10.5.7 last week my Intel Mac Pro froze several times, causing me to hard power down the computer.
My External drive now makes a clicking noise when it starts up for about 30 seconds, then stops, power light stays flashing. It does not mount.
I have tried Disc Utility (repaired permissions and repaied main internal drive after update), Disc Warrior and now Data Rescue II. All are not seeing the external, and I have tried it via both firewire and USB.
I see other people are experiencing this with other drives, has anyone had this issue with an external like mine? I had over 400GB of music, movies, etc on this 1TB drive.

ok here's where I'm at with this debacle.
I've checked my internal disk for reduncancy and have decided just to wipe it, replaced it with a 1TB SATA and used time machine to roll my data back on there. That will take care of the freezing, etc. I also had some issues with some of the 14GB of RAM I had installed (6GB of it was not "Mac Approved" but worked), but I think helped caused this issue of freezing with the update. So now down to 8GB of RAM (nuts!)
As for my external maxtor. I took apart the enclosure and mounted the SATA drives internally in my mac pro, then used Data Rescue II to get what remaining items I could off of one of the drives. The other drive is toast and just continues to keep clicking, etc. I thought by eliminating the maxtor power supply and mounting it internally I may have better luck. Not so much.
To your question about reporting to apple- I spoke to several tech specialists I know very well @ Apple and all were very helpful but most agreed that once the drive begins clicking and not mounting, there is a good possibility of your data having been lost. So aside from using a "Data Recovery" company and exhausting thousands of dollars, I am resolved to the fact I will just take the music I was able to recover (about 1/3rd of what was lost) and Ill spend the next few months scanning in discs I have, and contact apple about re-downloading purchases.
Moral of the story- BACK UP YOUR DATA! I had everything else (other than my 400+GB of music) backed up in about 3 places including time machine. Thank GOD since I have 250 GB of photos which I wouldnt be able to fathom losing.
If you had the same problem and were able to resolve I am envious, so far this has taught me not only to back up EVERYTHING but not to jump on the update bandwagon until all of the bugs are gone.
In the process I have lost hours of time but was able to learn more than I ever wanted to know about hard drives.
Keep us updated if you get resolution.

    Questions:
    1. Does Apple set sleep or lock switch for devices (drives)?
    2. If so, can it be reset manually?
    3. Does Apple have configuration profile for devices, like a registry key?
    4. If so, where is it located?
    Configuration:
Dual 2 GHz MacBook Pro 15”
    2 GB DDR SDRAM
    OSX 10.4.10
2 USB Ports Left and Right

NOTE: This Update is required when using a OneTouch Drive as a bootable device. Seagate suggests that you dismount and disconnect your FireWire Drive before continuing.
Users have identified issues when connecting OneTouch External Drives to FireWire Ports on their Mac G4 and/or G5 computers. These Problems range from system hangs, kernel panics to slow data transfer rates. The cause of these problems has been traced back to the FireWire Driver. Seagate has resolved these problems through updated FireWire Drivers.
I am using USB and not trying to use drive as a boot device.

  • Maxtor One-Touch back up, copying, etc. Driving me crazy!

As much I love my G5, one thing that drives me nuts is this:
If I copy a folder of 100gb from my main drive to my backup drive, where I had copied this same folder last week, but it now has 2 new files in it, I get a message which allows me to either overwrite the entire 100gb (even though only 2 files have changed) or cancelling.
What I REALLY need is some way for the computer to know that I only want the news files copied and to leave the other ones alone. If I open the folder and Select All, and then copy, i will have the opportunity to Replace or Overwrite, but that is way too cumbersome, considering the number and size of some of these files.
I think that my Maxtor One-touch has some way of doing what I want, but then that preseents other problems - like I can't selectively copy just some files, and if I'm copying from more than one drive to this backup drive, it gets complicated.
Is there a way to do what i'm trying to do?
    Thanks.
G-5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Maxtor One Touch external drive

    Thank you all.
    A couple of things:
First, I don't know much about hagis heid, or Scotland, but I have to say Craig Ferguson is perhaps the funniest latenight show host I've ever seen - he's fresh and spontaneous and really seems to enjoy what he's doing.
But to get back on topic, if I decide to use this new drive as a capture drive, I don't see "HFS Extended" as a formatting option. I've got Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended and UNIX File System. Is that because on 10.3.9 and not on Tiger yet, or am I missing something?
If I don't use this as a capture drive, is it still advisable to format it? I find that it copies faster, if I don't.
One more question - my orginal one - even once properly formatted, how can I do my copying of files, in some intelligent way, where it will only overwrite files that need updating and not waste time with the others?
How do y'all approach that? What is your system of backup?
    Thanks again.

  • Powerbook 15" w/ Tiger won't read Maxtor One Touch II External Hard Drive

    Hi all:
For some reason my G4 Powerbook can't recognize my Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive. I am trying to find a firewire cable that fits, as the Maxtor just gave me a USB and says that the cable won't work with mac. I am trying to find a cable that has a "printer type" end and a firewire end. Will it help? Where do I find it?
    Thanks,
    Chris

No the printer type end, won't work in Mac OS X either. The software that is included with One Touch does not work well on Tiger or later. Instead I recommend not using that software, and instead using Shirt Pocket Superduper for backup. Or look for EMC/Dantz to update the drivers for the included software to Tiger. I think the One Touch does have a Firewire 6 pin connector which is Mac compatible. These ports look like the Firewire port on your G4 Powerbook. Port number 2 below is a Firewire port:
You can buy the cable from the Apple Store, or any major Mac mail order shop such as Macwarehouse, Maczone, Macconnection, or even CDW.

  • Maxtor One Touch II Won't Mount

I'm running 10.6.8 and my maxtor one touch II won't mount all of a sudden? I've tried fire wire 400 and fire 400to800, restarting etc. The drive won't show up?
The driver update on the Maxtor/Seagate site opens up as code in a text edit file, it doesn't show up as the typical box to be unstuffed. Either way, it's an old update and I've been using this external drive for years. It's definitely spinning, but the computer just can't find it.

Can Disk Utility see it?  If so try repairing the drive.
As it turns out I finally got the drive to mount, after several attempts. It was simply a matter of there being less than a gig free on the maxtor so it was having trouble booting up.
    Thank you for the response!

  • Maxtor One Touch 3 is not showing on my desktop no more

Restarting computer Maxtor One Touch 3 doesn't show on my desktop. It will only if I pull the firewire our and in. It used to be OK. Even turning the power off or on on the Maxtor its still not showing.
Any idea how to fix that?

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
If that doesn't work, try these...
Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMDOption+of ?

  • Migration assistant won't recognize maxtor one touch

I have a Maxtor One Touch 4, 250 GB external hard drive, used for PC backups with about 230 GB of data. I have connected it to my iMac, using the USB 2.0 interface cable, and I can see all the folders and files on the drive through Finder. I can even open them up with Office for Mac, etc. However, I want to migrate these files onto my iMac using Migration Assistant, but Migration Assistant cannot find the drive it seems. It just sits there spinning forever, and never finds the drive...dumbfounded.

Yes, that is the case. I have since run Migration Assistant from the original source PC, and they came over to my Mac successfully. But I am disappointed with a number of issues I now face: e.g. importing music files into ITunes account has resulted in duplicate songs, no playlists preserved, etc. I guess I expected more from the Migration Assistant, now I've got lots of work ahead to make sense of where all the files ended up...

  • Maxtor One touch external hard drive

Ok, I have tried doing a query on this question and have come up empty. I recently bought a maxtor one touch 500 gig drive. I knew that I wanted a drive for backing but more so for adding room to use as our main drive. We bought a video camera a year ago and would like to upload the footage but do not have enough room on the original drive to add more than 45 minutes of video. Is there anyway to make iMovie look at the external drive to upload any new material? Or do I have to set (if possible and if so how do I) the maxtor as the bootable drive?

Ya, when you set up a new project, just select the little triangle next to the file name field to expand the save box to see and select other drives...
