Leopard "Blue screen of death" - total system crash!

So my new mac crashed. Again.
Recently I've experienced that my mac freezes when I start to do some heavy work, like video-editing or Photoshop. A re-install solved the problem for around two weeks, before the same thing happend again yesterday:
During a update of Final Cut Studio, my Mac suddenly freezes, and I had to do a forced quit. After this reboot my mac got to a blue screen (after the loading-apple-screen), and nothing more.
After around 14 reboots, I decided to do a archive and re-install. This re-install took *14 HOURS*, and now it stops at the loading Apple-logo.
Tryed to verify the disc with the Disk Utility software, showed up fine. Tryed to repair the permissions - came up some errors (apparently some missing files(?), before it said that it was fixed. Finally I tryed an extended hardware test - showed up nothing wrong.
Then I got the idea that I maybe could make a 2nd partition of the harddrive, preserving the exsisting data, and install Leopard on that new one. But when I try to install Leopard on this, I get an estimated *21 hours* of time to install.
I've also tryed to boot from a Linux-bootable USB-stick I use with my Acer-PC, but it refuse to boot from that.
So I'm pretty much stuck right now. When I try to open the machine in Single User Mode, it tells me a bunch of errors, before the following lines is repeated:
disk0s2: I/O error.
0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [ErrType I0] [I0Type Read] [PBlkNum 373453728] [LBlkNum 1356] [FSLogMsgID 591622195] [FSogMsgOrder First]

Could it be the harddrive, the RAM, or something completly else?
Any help is much appreciated!

Run DU and verify/repair the HD and also permissions.
Run Activity Monitor and check your Page outs which are related to RAM usage. If it is high, it indicates you are using your HD in lieu of RAM for whatever reason. It's not good and at the minimum slows things down.
You can also run a RAM check, such as Rember

Also check that your computer is not overheating.

  • Power Mac G5 Gray Screen of Death - Total System Instability

I have been trying to get a G5 working (1.8GHz, 3GB RAM, 2x250GB HD) for a while now with very limited success. I will just give you a rundown of the situations I am having:
    - The computer passes all Apple Hardware tests from the installation CD that came with the computer
    - The computer turns on and makes the startup chime
    - The computer will show the boot devices (hard drive, DVD, CD, etc)
    - The computer will not boot the OS, just spins and spins under the Apple logo, then turns into the gray "No" symbol. Then the fans start spinning up to full speed, as if the computer is going to take off like a helicopter.
    - The computer will not boot off of the install CD/DVD, just spins and spins under the Apple logo then turns into the gray "No" symbol. Then the fans start spinning up to full speed, as if the computer is going to take off like a helicopter.
Its like the computer wants to work, everything SEEMS fine, however it just refuses to boot off of any devices. I have swapped the RAM, video card, hard drive, battery, and DVD drive from a functional G5 with no success. This problem is baffling me like none other because everything LOOKS like it should work, however it just craps out.
Back when it was working it would randomly freeze up and the fans would kick up to full speed. I have gotten it to boot from CD a few times but it was random and not consistent. It kept rejecting the leopard DVD (spitting it out over and over).
I was able to finally get Debian Linux 5.0 PPC to install on this system, then randomly it started booting off of the hard drive with OS X Leopard installed. However, if I left the system idel for a period of time (30 minutes to an hour maybe) the fans would speed up to full and the system became completely unresponsive again until I forced it down and powered it back on. It worked this way for a few reboots and once again is giving me the "NO" symbol on boot after displaying the Apple logo and spinning wheel for a few minutes.
Any more suggestions before I throw this thing into oncoming traffic?

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
It will not consistently boot from CD, even with the hard drives unplugged. I have tried the original 10.3 CD's as well as a Tiger retail DVD. It will try to boot off the disk, display the Apple and spinning wheel, then go to the gray NO symbol with the spinning wheel. The fans then ramp up to full speed.
I am starting to just think bad logic board which really makes me mad as the system looks great and still has enough power to serve a purpose for me.

  • Blue screen of death during start-up

    Hey Adobe-Community,
I am having troubles with After Effects CC again. Every time I want to open After-Effects i get a BSOD. The last thing I can see is the opening-loading-thing (talking about that thing just the after effects version of it, logically I cant make a screencap of the AE version). I dont even get anything written in there - no "loading blabla" or "searching this-and-this" and so on - just the empty image without any information. It is like that for about five seconds before my audio starts jamming and I get a Blue Screen of Death.
    System Specifications:
    Windows 7 Home Edition - 64 Bit
    CPU:     Intel i5 2520m  2.5 GHz
    RAM:     8 GB
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 and Nvidia GeForce GT 555M (I think I am currently running on the GeForce - does anybody know how I can check which card I am using right now...)
    110 GB SSD - 40GB empty
    500 GB HDD - 150GB empty
    Laptop Screen: 1600x900
External Screen:1920x1080 (always using both screens)
    Things I tried already:
    Booting in Safe Mode
Result: Same as before - but without the Blue Screen. Just nothing happened. The Start-Up Screen of AE was showing, but again without information for about 5 minutes before I wanted to close it. Task Manager told me that there is no Application running, just a process. So that one didn't work.
    Reinstalling After Effects
Same result as before - Blue screen and empty Start-Up-Screen
    Reinstalling my Graphics Driver
After a bit of googling around I found some people mentioning that a Blue screen might come from troubles with my Graphics - so I reinstalled the driver from the GeForce. Same Result as before - Blue Screen.
I was able to run After Effects without any troubles just a couple of days ago. I didn't install any Plug-Ins, any new software, I cant even remember a Software update from any other software or anything (besides the Update for After Effects and InDesign from today).
Please, I really don't know what else to do.

  • Windows blue screen of death crash during Boot Camp driver install

I have been trying to get Windows running under Boot Camp on my 2.66 GHz Alu iMac, but without success.
Boot Camp partitions the drive and Windows XP SP2 installs properly. I boot into Windows, and then insert my Leopard install DVD to install the Apple drivers.
The driver installation gets about halfway, then the machine crashes with a blue screen of death and restarts automatically. It puts me back in Windows, with no drivers installed.
I am installing the Boot Camp drivers from the Leopard retail DVD. This machine is missing the Leopard install/restore discs that came with it, and Apple want to charge £99 for a replacement set.
Is there any way I can get the Boot Camp drivers installed, or do I need to find a friend with the exact same machine and original system discs and use those?

    Aloha Adam.
Don't know whether this is helpful, but below is a list of drivers that are installed (as of Aug 08).
Also, if you have not already, you may find FAQ helpful, as well, at URL: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1656
Lastly, though they're a year old, the Update 2.1 is in .exe format, so if you can get it the .exe download package onto your installed Windows OS somehow (e.g., copied onto a CD, IF Windows can read it), you might stand a chance of alternate means of installing the drivers.
If this helps, please so indicate.

  • 10.6.2 Died - Blue screen of death for Snow Leopard?

OK. I upgraded Tiger via the SL Boxed Set yesterday. The install went pretty flawless - no hiccups or issues at all. It is a clean install. I had cloned Tiger to an external USB drive - that's why I'm able to type this message now. I upgraded to 10.6.2 this morning and still everything seemed fine.
I had the migration pretty much complete. I was getting used to some of the new features, I had moved/installed everything, etc. I have played games, used mail, internet, photo software, etc. with no problems. Today while using the computer, I noticed I would attempt to start a program, but the icon would just bounce in the dock and would not open. The programs that were already open were working fine - Safari, Apple Mail, and Google SketchUp. So, I finished up what I was doing and restarted my computer. That restart was the last time I ever saw the 10.6.2 desktop.
Upon reboot, I get the Apple logo with gray screen, then the blue screen, then it freezes. I disconnected all connected devices (USB/Firewire, etc.) and unplugged for 30 minutes - no luck. Booted from the SL CD and ran Disk Utility. Disk Utility found no errors and said all was great! I verified the disk and repaired it even though it said it didn't need it. Still no luck. Just the blue screen of death.
Any ideas where to go from here? I can boot via my USB external drive with 10.4.11, but that doesn't really correlate to my problem. I REALLY don't want to have to reinstall everything all over again - it took me ALL DAY to get it all moved over and I still have some to do. Thanks for any tips or tricks.

I suppose the new install just wrote over all the files, and it appears to have left all of my settings in tact. Now, if I just knew which one or few files was the problem, I'd be really satisfied.
It might help to understand that the procedure affects primarily OS files, for instance by replacing the existing copies of the binaries the OS contains with fresh ones from the installer disc. It does not affect user created files & settings at all, except possibly for some system-wide settings that might have become corrupt. It won't affect third party items either, except that it may move a few of them known to be incompatible with Snow Leopard in a root level "Incompatible Software" folder, as explained in Mac OS X v10.6: About incompatible software.
So, the most likely cause of your problem was a damaged or missing OS domain file that the installer replaced. How the file got damaged or which one(s) were involved is hard to say. Some third party software can do this, especially hacks & so-called system enhancements that ignore Apple's Developer Guidelines for appropriate entry points into the OS. Improper shutdown, like from a sudden loss of power, can sometimes do it. User error may be involved, especially if you use the Terminal to modify system files & settings or otherwise make changes to the root level folders normally managed by the OS (/System, /Library, & the ones not normally visible from the Finder).

  • Windows "Blue screen of Death" when booting computer attached to LabVIEW PXI realtime system

Good Morning (at least in the western hemisphere)!
I'm having a problem on two test systems where intermittently, at least on one machine, I get a Windows "Blue Screen of Death" error message when booting the machine connected to a PXI RT system. I reloaded the RT systems software yesterday (LV RT 7.1.1, NI-VISA 3.3.1) and am having this problem on two different setups, two laptops, two PXI chassis. Our short term work around has been to boot with the network cable removed at one end or the other, but these are the baseline models for a larger test system in the design/construction stage that will not be used by knowledgeable engineers but by (probably more knowledgeable!) technicians.  Any ideas would be a help

Blue screens are almost always caused by drivers and not by applications, so chances are there's a problem on the driver level.  The crash log file will be instrumental to diagnosing this problem.
Turn on the crash event logging as described in this Microsoft KB:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314084/EN-US/
...and then post the details from the crash found in the Windows Event Viewer here. That will help us narrow the problem down.

  • Ipod crashes windows (blue screen of death)

Hi all. A bit of background info:
A couple of months ago the hard drive crashed on my friends computer. They had to reinstall their OS. Thankfully they had made backups of most everything and were able to get most things reinstalled successfully.
Now they are using a 15g ipod connected through a firewire port on an HP laptop. They do not have a USB adaptor, so gotta go with the FW.
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
I know this is vague information, but any pointers on how to proceed in troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated, thanks

we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)

  • Iphone 5S crashing after 8.3 update blue screen of death

I have an iPhone 5S which is 90 days out of warranty.  I updated to 8.3 and the first issue I noticed was my music app.  When I play music it doesn't start off from the last song I played - I have to choose my songs again and restart my shuffled playlist.  Last week out of nowhere my phone crashed but it was at 80% battery.  The screen went black, then blue, then tried to reboot.  It "reset" itself within a few hours.  Next day I accessed the App Store and it crashed again.  It has since crashed several more times using Facebook, email, turning it off...very frustrating.  I brought my phone to VZW and they said it was a software issue.  I then went to the Genius Bar and they said without restoring the phone and reinstalling ios, they have no way of knowing if it's software or hardware.  The phone crashed as the tech was looking at my phone so he excused himself, went to the back and came back with a second opinion  "it's definitely a hardware issue and since you are out of warranty, you'll have to buy a new phone for $549".  WHAT?!?  So wait, you JUST told me that you wouldn't know if it was a hardware issue until the phone was restored so how did you magically surmise this?  Then to tell me there is NOTHING that can be done and if I wanted to restore from a backup, I wouldn't be guaranteed that all of my content would be restored to my phone OR there is a possibility my phone would be wiped clean and not restorable at all.  Nice try and scare tactic.  I left Apple with a phone stuck on the blue screen of death.  I went back to VZW and they said its definitely not a hardware issue and even if it were, Apple is the company to seek, not them - they are just my carrier.  I am so fed up with Apple.  Every update and phone I've had with them has had issues.  I don't know why I continue to be their customer.  If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Here's what I was actually meant to say,
    Hi
You could try basic trouble shooting, that's what everyone usually suggests first but it that fails to work then it is a hardware issue.
Did it start crashing after you installed or or got rid of an app? Oh and has it happened before on any other IOS?
In my opinion you should email Apple explaining the issue and they might be able to help you or tell you it plain and simple that your phone is broken

We need to know the Stop code on the blue screen. If there is a file name mentioned, we want that too.
You can prevent the rapid disappearance of the blue screen during a normal boot by choosing this at the F8 Startup menu.

  • Blue Screen of Death when I try to install Leopard drivers.

So, I've been able to use Boot Camp to install Windows XP, SP 2 on my new 20-inch aluminum iMac. This is the same version (same disk, in fact) of Windows that I installed on my old 17-inch iMac, and it worked perfectly then.
After I finish the Windows installation, and put the Leopard disk in to install the drivers, nothing happens. No Autoplay. When I go into My Computer, and double-click on the cd, the installation process starts. After cycling through 4 drivers, I get the blue screen of death and the computer reboots.
When everything restarts, Windows tells me that I suffered an error. I can't send an error report off, because Windows won't acknowledge my wireless internet connection yet, without the Apple drivers.
I've tried to transfer the Boot Camp 2.1 update to the Windows partition via 2g flash drive, and no luck. Trying to run the update doesn't do anything, the icon simply lights up for a moment and then un-highlights. Nothing happens.
I'm really confused, I didn't have ANY problems like this on my last iMac. Any help anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

There IS another way to try this.
Boot to Windows and right-click My Computer or My Documents and open as "explore". Insert the Leopard disk. If it offers to install STOP it. Click on the LEFT side the plus sign next to the machine's DVD drive icon (the reason we opened the "explore" style directory). The Boot Camp files are now passive but exposed. Next right click My Computer and click properties. Next hardware and then device manager. Now you can one-by-one install the drivers using Windows hardware wizard. You might even want to drag the contents of the Leopard disk (drivers) right on to your (Windows) "desktop". In device manager open Human Interface Devices - you will find Apple Keyboard or whatever an iMac has there. Rightclick and hit Update Driver - the Wizard opens. Click 'no - not this time' and continue. Click 'install from a specific location' and continue. Next the Wizard gives you a 'browse location' option. Just click around until you locate the Boot Camp drivers in your disk or desktop and proceed - it will update, I promise you.

  • Windows Vista Crashing When Ipod is Plugged In. Blue Screen of Death?

A week ago, my computer suddenly started to reboot whenever I plugged my 5th generation 80 gig Ipod in to sync. A blue screen will pop up, and automatically restart.
I do not believe this is the blue screen of death that appeared 2 months ago. I have upgraded to Itunes 8.0.1 when it was first released, and I had no problems until a week ago. I haven't heard of anyone receiving the blue screen of death since the update to Itunes 8 was released.
I have also lost all of my music from my Ipod, so I am anxious to figure this out.
Here is what the blue screen (certain passages paraphrased, the specifics were copied directly):
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the firs time you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Make sure all hardware and software is properly installed
If it continues, disable/remove any newly installed hardware and software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shawoding. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 for Advanced Sartup options, then select safe mode.

  • IPhone 5s has consistent glitches, crashing, blue screen of death, etc.

I have an iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1.1 and I have had the following problems:
Weird glitches where parts of the display will disappear, become distorted, or be replaced with other parts of the display.
Whenever the above happens, my phone will also freeze and become unresponsive
This is also usually accompanied by the "blue screen of death".
It will then proceed to restart
If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.
