LG Extravert, my experience, not so good
I'd like to share my experience with the LG Extravert with anyone considering adopting this Ver 1.0 hardware. Bottom line, don't.
First issue: VZ Navigator suddenly only half works.. The VZ Navigator just up and stopped getting GPS data while navigating to a destination. It could find my current location, find destinations and calculate routes to them. But once it started to navigate to the destination, the goofy graphic shows a red box with "NO GPS" in the box and the graphic would never update as I drove toward the destination. I discovered the issue when I drove past the exit and had to drive around blind while fighting with my navigator trying to understand why it didn't tell me to take the exit. The device functioned properly at the local company Verizon store, but the sales/tech guy told me that they had the strongest repeater literally right over my head. Why that should matter is beyond my understanding of this hardware. The store was out of phones so they had to ship one to my house 4 days later (of course this was a Fri. night). The new one seems to be working ok, but for how long? No one could even hint at why it stopped working.
Second issue: I too experience the phone reducing images to 160X120 before sending them off. Funny thing is, that file was still 270K or so, which is the size of the 1600X1200 file as well (as someone else also pointed out). So this isn't saving bandwidth or anything like that, just stupidity. This is simply sloppy work on LG's part and should be fixed by software. But we all know it probably won't or it will take months or years.
Third issue: Custom message tones. If you look at your contacts, you'll see that each contact can not only have a custom ringtone, but also a custom message tone (msgtone). However, when I set a custom tone and save, the phone somehow reports back that the ringtone and msgtone are now the same. But, when the contact sends a msg, I get the default tone. Not the custom tone I tried to set or the custom ringtone (as reported in the contact details). This feels to me like a half-baked, partially implemented "feature" that got lost somewhere in alpha testing by offshore resources. Another irritation brought about by adopting Version 1.0 of a device.
Fourth Issue: USB charging cable. I'm happy to see that mobile devices are finally settling in on a std. charging port, the mini USB. HOWEVER, this device HATES to be charged by any other than it's own cable. The WHOLE POINT of having all my devices use the same type of cable is so that I can carry one cable in my briefcase, keep one cable in the kitchen, put one of the nightstand next to the bed and be able to charge any of my devices from any location. Not this one though, complaint after complaint when it's not on its very own, proprietary cable. To the point where it will report that it's charging, but when you unplug, dead battery. What's so complicated about accepting 5V DC down a pin? There's only 4 freaking connections for USB and I'm thinking that those four are all doing to same thing no matter what you plug into (laptop, wall block, desktop) because there's a standard for this type of thing. Sigh, just another "why are you doing this to me" frustration with gear pushed into the market before it's ready.
Bottom line, this piece of crap is going back to Verizon and I just might be forced into a smartphone because I really need a QWERTY keyboard to be effective at communicating with these things and the only alternative I really see is the Stratosphere (?), which is also an LG product. So, if I switch off to that device, look for another rant from me, as I'm sure to dig up all the irritations and bugs with that one too.

1) GPS in cell phones is very picky, its not just THIS phone. Many of them, especially in low power devices like this have a hard time maintaining the GPS signal inside certain vehicles where the roof interferes with many of the satellite signals, indoors, or in a downtown with a lot of taller buildings blocking GPS satellites. This phone does not have the power to "predict" where you are and update accordingly. This is not the fault of this phone.
2) Again, this is a low power phone AND as typical for most images sent via texts, images are reduced to reduce network load on Verizons network. The ONLY way to get around this is to get a smartphone AND one that can send the picture to the social network, photo album or whatever via 3G/4G. Even with an Android for example, send a pic via text and it is still reduced. Send the pic via 3G/4G and it usually stays full size.
3) call/message tones: Check with Verizon and LG for a software or firmware update, older phones have this issue, my newer one (VN271) does not.
4) Charging: I have this exact same issue. I have to charge it either connected directly to a PC, or use the supplied AC/DC charger. I have a USB hub (with power connected) that I use for multiple devices (my phone, bluetooth earpiece, wifes phone, mp3 players, etc) and I can be at 1/2 battery, charge it all night on that USB hub and the battery is dead despite "charging" 6-8 hours, even with the original cable that came with the Extravert. Even if I use a different AC/DC charge liek what came with other Verizon phones, same thing happens as if the pins are reversed or something else causes a drain instead of charge. THIS one really needs to be fixed.

I have been an AT&T iPhone customer since the original 3G. My boss would call me all the time and eventually he agreed that if I buy a Verizon Iphone, he would cover the bill. I got the Verizon Iphone several months ago, and just recently went to port my AT&T number over to it, with the intent of keeping the AT&T phone as my personal phone with a new number, and then using the Verizon Iphone for when the boss calls.
While speaking to the Verizon rep, she said the port would take a couple of hours minimal, and would for sure be done within 24 hours. Perfect, once I am done with the call to Verizon, I will call AT&T to tell them to change my number so I can keep the AT&T phone. I immediately call AT&T and while on the phone, it goes dead. The port went through in less than 5 minutes. I call AT&T and they say once the number has been ported, I can't have my old account back, I have to start new service.
Had I known this I would have never ported the number. Then I call Verizon and explain the situation. They say no problem, Port it back to AT&T and then I can just get a new number for my Verizon phone with the same unlimited data. So I port the number back to AT&T, then I call Verizon back. Verizon says they can't do anything until the 22nd (Today), but that it would be no problem to get the account back with the unlimited data since I still want to remain their customer.
So I call today, the 22nd, as I was instructed to do. Of course they say they can't do that, and I have to start a new account with the tiered data. My point is, if you look at my account, I started with a Verizon number, then a number got ported in, and then back out and now I just want it back to the way it was. Had the original Verizon rep said the port would go through that quickly, I would have not done it, and called AT&T first, thereby avoiding this whole mess. I would like Verizon to reinstate the original plan I had with any phone number they want to give me, which is what the Rep I talked to on the 15th said would happen when I called back on the 22nd (Today)

JustinOnce the port process starts, AT&T has like...less than 4 hours I think to respond to the process to verify the info for the Verizon port in, or else theyre fined for takein too long. Whereas Straight talk and Boost mobile are way smaller companies so the government gives them 2 days to transfer numbers.So with the bigger companies, they do it right away. But even if you port in to vzw, port out, then port in again they wpnt let you keep the unl data? interesting they would consider that a new account and everything.

That's just nonsense that politicians and other ignorant people say. Just ignore it. The market has spoken loud and clear on this one. The more interesting question is if the USA could ever approach the efficiency of China. Again, obviously that is possible, but not with the current socio/policial/economic environment.

That is a much more interesting question. For the past decade, it has been fashionable to treat software development as a commodity. All software developers are equal, we can just hire them in India where they work for less. In theory, that is true. In practice, all they look at is price. They don't pay the slightest attention to the actual developers, either in the USA or India. All they want is cheap, cheap, cheap. Because they don't care, they don't bother to check qualifications or to make good architecture choices. All they do is Windows and all they hire are people with the most buzzwords on their resumes.
If you want to be in that market, then you need to invent a resume with 15 years of iOS experience. Just study the latest, hippest acronyms and give yourself experience for twice as long as said technology has existed. The people doing the hiring won't know any difference.
If you actually want to be a real programmer, then your approach in India is no different than it would be in the US. Learn the fundamentals. Learn the environment that you actually enjoy working in. This is a more difficult path but it is the only one that will actually take you where you want to go. -
My review of X1 Carbon - Not very good...
Well, I just got my X1 Carbon yesterday. So far, not so good.
I have i7 with 8GB of RAM, 256 SSD and WWAN. Pretty much maxed out on the upgrades.
1. The computer is litterally crooked. When I place it on a hard flat surface (my kitchen counter), it doesn't lay flat. There is about 1 mm gap below the front right rubber foot and the counter. So every time I touch the trackpad, I get a click from the laptop tapping on the counter. Lovely. This is annoying as hell. Poor workmanship by Lenovo.
2. USB 3.0 Dock is an absolute joke. I am using the Targus ACP71USZ. They are all the same, regardless of which model you buy, since they all use Displaylink technology. On the m,onitors connected to the dock, the mouse responds with tiny delays, so it is very annoying and difficult to accurately point the mouse. Its bad with both HDMI and DVI. HDMI is worse. Ethernet, is pathetic. I don't even get a 1mb download speed at speedtest.net. Other computers on the same copnnection get over 20mb. Ping was 800ms vs 5ms for other computers. Absolutely pathetic. Wifi gave me 7mb with 100ms ping. Then I tried connecting the ethernet cable to the dongle that comes with the X1, directly to the X1, and not the dock. I got 18mb and 5ms ping. Much better, but this adds to the fact that the dock is a $200 peice of garbage. The only good way to use an external monitor is via the mini displayport on the X1 itself. So basically here is my setup. I have 2 external monitors. One goes to the DVI on the dock. Other to displayport on the X1. Ethernet dongle on the USB of the X1, power cable on the X1, USB to connect the X1 to the dock. I have to plug in 4 cables to the X1 just to dock it. Kind of defeats the purpose of the dock, and its worse since the dock works like crap anyway.
If I were to just use the X1 as a laptop, then it would be fine. But this machine absolutely stinks when used with a dock.
I am alrerady considering putting it on ebay.As for the T430s and the Series 3 dock I have, keep in mind it's the 135W dock I bought when I received the ThinkPad W510 for work. The problem I see with my dock and the T430s is that the T430s doesn't remember the configuration and state. So when I dock the notebook and boot it, it doesn't always display on the attached monitors. Or it changes which monitor is the primary. Or it displays only on one monitor at 800x600 resolution.
In short, it is unpredictable and very frustrating.
I have seen enough reports from other ThinkPad Optimus based models in this generation to know it isn't just me. There seems to be some issues with the chipset, drivers, and hardware integration.
There were no such issues with the T420 or T420s.
It is sad to see products take a step backward. You always think and expect continual improvement from generation to generation but it simply isn't true. You roll the dice each time. -
Im not very good at troubleshooting, but I have played around with the system preferences. My airport connection is fine as well as the ethernet. Firewall says its not connected, (im not sure if that matters or not?)
I have subtracted my network from the list, restarted, and then put it back and and restarted...nothing seems to be working. Iam in the middle of a correspondace course and i really need my internet back...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

After creating a new slideshow I export it with the setting HD 1080p it is then saved as a .mov i then create a dvd in idvd and the quality is not as good as the original photo's when viewed on the monitor or a TV, am i doing something wrong?
DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good. You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

Why is playback video quality not as good as the source?
Hi. I'm not new to PrE but am new to the forum.
I've been using PrE 2 for about 7 years. I got a newer computer running Windows 7 and basically was forced to upgrade to PrE 12 because PrE 2 didn't run very well on the newer machine. Once I installed PrE 12, I was eager to jump into my first project on this machine.
I expected that with a newer machine and the latest software, I would get outstanding results--hopefully much better than what I always got with PrE 2 on the old machine. With PrE 2, it was not uncommon that the imported video seemed lossy on playback or for whatever other reason seemed not as good as the source video.
Unfortunately, the results on the new/new were no better than the old/old. So I switched to my wife's (even newer) machine running Windows 8 and got the same results. Then I thought that perhaps the output to DVD would be better than what I saw in the PrE editor. No dice.
The video quality of the source isn't the greatest (see below), but I expected that the PrE 12 would be no worse.
What went wrong?

I purchased one several years ago and found it extremely helpful. And surprisingly, I found that with PrE 12 I could still use the book that I purchased before because most of it was still relevant to the new software. Still a great purchase!!kcarter
Please excuse if I mention things you may already be aware of, but I did not want to take anything for granted.
The installed RAM on Machine 1 is too low for HD work, and I wonder about the processor on Machine 2 even though it has more installed RAM than that on Machine 1. For now, I will bypass the usual drills and get to the source media and project settings.
1. From what I can put together, your source media from iPhone 4 are 720p up to 30 frames per second. That usually translates into a variable frame rate which can be problematic for Premiere Elements. The variable can lead to audio out of sync, but not necessarily. If all else fails, then it is onto HandBrake or the like to change the variable into a constant frame rate.
2. One of the features of version 11 and 12 is the program taking over the setting of the project setting based on the properties of the first video drag to the Timeline. Some times it does it OK, sometimes not. When not, then you set the project preset manually yourself based on what you know to be the properties of your source media. Please refer to the following which includes how to set the project preset manually.

Based on what I have read about the properties of the iPhone 4 video, I would suggest the project preset (assuming a NTSC set up)
NTSC
AVCHD
AVCHD-LITE 720p30
One of the important things to remember is that Premiere Elements 11 and 12 have as their default project preset
NTSC
AVCHD
Full HD1080i30
and not the NTSC DV Standard of versions earlier than 11.
When 11 and 12 do not get the automatic project preset correct, they do not give you the closest fit, rather they give you their
default NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 which is not going to be appropriate for 720p video.
Classically it is written if you have the correct project preset you should have no colored line over the content when you bring the video to
the Timeline manually set. But, just the variable frame rate can trigger the unrendered indicator (orange instead of red in versions 11 and 12).
So, rendering the Timeline would be indicated to get the best possible preview under these circumstances.
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on either of your computers?

I like the new iOS 7 for iphone... But i think it's not a good idea to allow switch the iphone on flight mode when it is locked.. What happens if your iphone is stolen or lost? You couldn't be able to locate it using find my iphone... Can i remove this from the bottom menu?
And have your phone set to require a passcode before it can be accessed.

Boot Camp 3.0 and Windows 7 64-bit - My experiences/notes
I just installed Boot Camp 3.0 from the Snow Leopard DVD onto my MacBook Pro 17 (Mid 09) which is running Windows 7 64bit RTM and had Boot Camp 2.1 previously installed on it.
My experiences/notes:
1. The Boot Camp 3.0 installation automatically removed the Boot Camp 2.1 drivers that it was going to update and then installed the newer 3.0 ones
2. You still can only use the GeForce 9600M GT graphics chipset, i.e. only the 9600M GT shows to windows and appears in the device manager
3. Deferred Procedure Calls (DPC) Latency issues still exist although it doesn't seem like you need to run the Bootcamp.exe on CPU 0 affinity only (Bootcamp.exe = the updated/Boot Camp 3.0 version of KbdMgr.exe)
4. You still can't fully dim the keyboard backlight with the F5 key
5. I manually updated the 'important' drivers to the very newest one, i.e.
5a. Latest Nvidia driver for GeForce 9600M GT => 186.81notebook_win7_winvista_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
5b. Latest WLAN chip driver => Broadcom (4322AG chipset) Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista 5.10.91.8 (14 May 2009) = sp43743.exe
5c. Lateset Realtek High Definition Audio Codec => VistaWin7R231.zip
6. Although I still have bad DPC latency, I haven't yet noticed any audio/video lag/drop-outs/screeches etc.

the version 11.1.4 of iTunes not working good because it's not recognizing my iPhone and I can't do anything.
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features(Later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (If this won't uninstall press on)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

Should you get the error iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found after the above reinstall then copy QTMovieWin.dll from:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
and paste into:
C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
The above paths would be for a 64-bit machine. Hopefully the same fix with the " (x86)" omitted would work on 32-bit systems with the same error. -
My ipad 2 is not very good picking up wi-fi signals
MY IPAD 2 is not very good at picking up wi-fi signials .I have a Kindle Fire and it has no problems in the same location .Is this a normal limitation for the IPAD or do I need a fix

It's possible it's that app that's the culprit.
Try syncing your apps but deselect the box next to labyrinth 2 in iTunes. Or, delete the app directly from the iPad by holding down the app until it jiggles then tap the circle with an x, then tap Delete. Press the Home button once or twice to stop all the icons from jiggling. You can always re sync the app using iTunes.
Then restart the iPad.Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPod touch. To turn iPod touch back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
See if the screen will rotate.
If that doesn't help, try, "Reset All Settings". General / Reset. Tap Reset All Settings. That resets preferences and settings to default but contacts, calendars, and media won't be effected. -
Pages 4.3 will open Appleworks Power PC Documents, but I Pages 5 will not. What am I missing? or is the software just not as good as 4.3?
"Some users have reported" is a mild way to put it. To answer your question "or is the software just not as good as 4.3?" more directly... it's only better in transparency between platforms. Oh, one other improvement- it DOES run faster, but then of course it would since it's so much more lightweight.
