License Type Requirements To Use Data Guard For Oracle EE

Hi,
I haven't been able to get a straight answer on this, so hopefully someone can help me.
We currently have two physical servers, both licensed to run Oracle Database 11gR2 EE, however one is running a cpu-based license (primary server/production) and the other is running a named-user based license (secondary server/soon-to-be-standby server).
I had no hand in selecting the license model, so this is what I have to work with. So the question is this: With this type of license model differences, can I use Oracle Data Guard?
Our Oracle software vendor says no because of the differences in the license models.
Any feedback would be invaluable. Thanks.

That is so because there is not much to say about it: You create your standby as described in the Data Guard doc (RMAN DUPLICATE)
Then you ship the Archivelogs to the standby and do recover database there. Technically easy. No higher protection mode possible, though.
I am no License Specialist, but I think that you will always need some kind of license for the standby database - even if you maintain it this way.
My recommendation would be to clarify with your company first what your Recovery Point Objective is - can you live with the probably high amount of data loss in case of Disaster on the Primary?
If not - purchase the correct license and continue with Data Guard Best Practices instead of doing a home grown solution.
Security is not cheap.

Using data guard for migration pruposes.

Hi we are looking to consolidate a couple of databases onto a single server. One of the databases is our bi database which is currently running on a single server and it is running oracle 10.1.0.3 on suse linux 64 bit.
We also have an oracle 2 node cluster running on RHEL4 64 bit linux itanium. which is our sote database.
We are looking to create a physical standby server of the store database onto a new server and storage array and also we are looking to migrate the bi database over to the same server/storage platform and would like to use ASM as the storage option for both of the database once they are migrated and also replicated to the new server.
I guess my question is...can I run multiple different versions of oracle on the same server or is this just a bad idea? we know that we need to have the same version 10.2.0.3 for the physical standby server which is a different version than the bi datatabse so would it be better idea to upgrade the bi database to also be running 10.2.0.3 before we are to try and replicate it to the new hardware?

Lets start with what physical Data Guard standby is ... it is the creation of a row-for-row, block-for-block duplicate of a primary production database.
If the version are not identical that is impossible.
If the data contained within them is not identical that is impossible.
If you want to merge databases I would suggest Transportable Tablespaces ... nothing is faster and safer.
Once you have you data merged you can then create a physical Data Guard standby for purposes of replication if you wish.

Data guard vs. oracle stream

Our db is 10g 2 nodes RAC db and the db server is window 2003 server. Our standby db was using data guard for feeding data from primary to standby. Since our standby db was not up to date now we are planning to rebuild our standby db. We are debating if we should use data guard or oracle stream to feed data to this new standby db. Can any body give us some insights on which one is better on this purpose?

1 physical standby
2 logical standby
3 streams
Only 1 is a zero-loss, high-availability solution.
2 and 3 do not support all data types, and will automatically suppress not-supported datatypes.
3 apart from that is also asynchronous, where 1 and 2 can be set up to be synchronous.
3 will be also much more difficult to troubleshoot. Basically: when you are out-of-sync you have to rebuild. You can't re-ship redolog files.
1+2 ship redolog files to the standby server, 1 uses them to recover the database, 2 uses them to mine them and to re-execute the transaction.
3 mines redolog files at the source, and sends statements to re-execute them.
Only 1 is a true HA solution.
You can not use Streams to build a standby database.
The purpose of Streams is replication, not standby.

Data Guard on Oracle 9i

Good day,
I'm trying to configure standby database using Data Guard on Oracle 9i, primary database on windows xp and stand by database on W2K server, and I'm on step three of the Create Configuration Wizard. I'm trying to create a new physical standby database and when I click next then it waits a few moments then get a window that pops up and says "Data Guard remote process startup failed"
I suspect it is something to do with "Preffered Credential" settings.
Can some one guide me how to go for this, or any suggestion about the above mentioned error message.

How to setup a remote recovery process - Not using Data Guard?

Hello -
Has anyone (or can send me some links) set up recovery at a remote site - and not used Data Guard? For example, shipped off logs via FTP, applied the logs, and kep the DB in recovery mode?

This manual procedure is described in the Dataguard Concepts manual for 10gR2, hopefully is this your unmentioned version (BTW what happens if you do type your version? Does your boss beats you up for doing that?). I don't know why someone wants to replace something robust by something unreliable by default, using FTP. Not only unreliable, also unsecure!

Recommendation for setting up Data Guard for EBS R12 12.1.3

Hello Experts,
I would like to get some experts opinion and recommendation on setting up Data GUARD for EBS R12.1.3 running on Linux based systems.
Firstly I would wanna let you all know that I am just geek in this subject matter so do excuse me for any mistakes.
While we are planning on setting up Data Gurad fro R12 what are the best practices to consider ?.
We have 2 node rac enabled database and would wanna have non-rac based physical standby, based on this I believe that having db tier on remote or standby site is enough ?
if db node is enough for standby location what are things to be done when a fail over / switch over / role transitioned to standby for the app node from primary site to point db on the
standby location or do we have to have both apps and db tier @ stand by location
--However having a apps tier/node at standby will be of no use as we are planing to run db on mounstate meaning not a active data guard setup.

Oracle Data Guard
You can use "Physical Standby".
You cannot use "Logical Standby".
You are allowed to use Fast Start Failover (FSFO) but SAP Support is not provided.
You can use Data Guard Broker.
You can use Maximum Performance Mode, Maximum Availability Mode and Maximum Protection Mode.
In the case of Maximum Availability and Maximum Protection, you must pay particular attention to a fast network connection in order to avoid performance problems.
Maximum Protection causes the primary database to terminate if problems occur in the standby database.

Difference between Data Providers for Oracle

There are 3 .NET Data Providers for access an Oracle Database:
1) ODP.NET, who uses Oracle API to access an Oracle Database.
2) Microsoft .NET Data Provider for Oracle, who comes in the Assemblie System.Data.OracleClient
3) Microsoft .NET Data Provider for OLE DB.
My questions are:
1) There is another Data Provider to access an Oracle DB ?
2) Which is better, for example to handle LOB fields ?
3) Which is better in performance ?
4) ODP.NET uses some Oracle API to handle a DB, and the others ?
5) What is the requirement (Oracle Client, OS) of each of them ?

I would recommend using ODP.NET. Overall, I've seen better performance from it than other Oracle providers. It requires the 9.2 client and any OS that the 9.2 client supports.
With respect to LOBs, the first ODP.NET version was consistently faster retrieving LOBs than other Oracle providers. The latest version of ODP.NET (and the upcoming version) have made some substantial improvements in LOB performance on top of that.

Data Guard with Oracle 9i and 10g -- have you done it?

We have an ERP system (JDEdwards, db size approx 600 GB) and we'd like to copy the data in this system to a database on another computer. We'd use the remote database for reporting, so we need it to be available. We are looking at using Data Guard running in Logical Standby mode.
The ERP database is Oracle 9i, and we are considering having the Logical Standby database be 10g. Have you done this and if so, what was your experience?
Here's why we want to do this. There are many tables in the ERP database that contain descending indexes. We can't change this, and it is not supported with Data Guard under Oracle 9.2. Tables with descending indexes do not copy to the logical standby database.
We were told that this is corrected in a newer release of Oracle, and we were wondering if a 10g database would properly copy tables with descending indexes.

What you are trying to do might not be possible. Because when you create logical standby you have to create a physical standby first and convert it. Primary and standby have to be same version.
In furture it might be possible because 10G will support rolling upgrade of logical standby.
However even it's possible you have to go through a lot of pain to setup and maintain it because Oracle don't support the setup.
What you could try are Stream and Replication, I will say Stream is very interesting one. Because Oracle say : "Oracle Streams and Oracle Data Guard (including Data Guard SQL Apply) are independent features based on some common underlying infrastructure and technology. "

Test Data generator for oracle?

I found a long list of "Test data generators" for oracle by google.Is there anybody there to use some specific product and have nice experience? I have limited time to test them.

The Oracle provided dbms_random package can be used to help generate test data.
I have found that most test data generation programs are not that useful for generation data in an rdbms environment.

Yes, it's supported. You install against one instance directly of the Rac Server. Then you update the config.xml file and the jdbc resource in your weblogic server with the full rac address. Error using "Microsoft ODBC for Oracle" driver

I am trying to connect to Oracle 10g Express Edition from Access 2003 on Windows XP. I created a DSN using "Microsoft ODBC for Oracle" driver. When I try to connect using ADO, I get this error:
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed
I googled this error and got a lot of hits but no solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to Oracle and am coming from SQL Server 2000.
