Lighting effects filter not available on PScc - using windows 8.1 with GeForce GTX 680 graphics card

I have Photoshop cc and Lightroom 5.5.  My computer runs windows 8.1, 64 bit, with GeForce GTX 680 graphics card.
I am trying to use the lighting effects filter, but it is grayed out so I cannot select it.
Can you tell me what I need to change in order to use the lighting effects filter?

This is the Lightroom forum. I don't use the lighting effects very often in Photoshop. But if I recall correctly, it will only work on 8-bit images.

I don't know why there has been doubt since post #12 where I explained that Ps must be running in 64-bit mode when more than 2100 MB RAM is reported in Preferences.
Anyway, here's a screenshot of Activity Monitor showing CS6 in 64-bit mode and CS5.1 in 32-bit mode.

  • Using the lighting effects filter causes my CS6 to crash

    Hi,
I read other threads with people have issues with their PC, but I am not able to follow them to correct my issues.
When I open a JPEG file from my mark iii into CS6, I try to start a new layer and then add the lighting effects filter.  CS6 crashes (the little effects comes up on the screen and the little blue circle goes round and round). Nothing happens, but if I check task manager it says photoshop is not running.
I have windows, 16GB ram, and am using a small percent of my memory.
How do I see if I need to update my video card and how do I do that?
    Thank you, Michele

Have you installed all the Photoshop updates?
And have you checked your GPU maker's website for updated video card drivers?

  • CS6  Non-responsive when using Light effect filter in Photoshop

Win 7 OS. I am trying to use the light effect filter and when I select it photoshop gets locked up and won't respond until I end task in task manager (it says photoshop not responding in task manager). Is there a fix for this? I did all of my updates and it still happens. I have homework to do, I need to fix this issue. Any help is appreciated,
    Thank you

Every time I try and use lighting effect, on my Win 7, CS6 it crashes. I at least get to use it, but when I click "ok" for the changes to take place, "Adobe has stopped working" and just crashes.
I looked into my Graphics Card drivers update... (AMD RADEON hd 6450) and on the site, I chose a very new update for a catalyst... blah blah. Which gave me this new control panel specific with this new driver update. However, once I downloaded it, restarted (for s & g's) it doesn't show up in my graphics card properties... its the same driver as before. So this may not have anything to do with what help I need. Although, it has a new "control center" that I looked at and its all martian to me.
Someone please help me to resolve this issue??!! I can give more information if needed.

  • Lighting Effects filter in CC does not stay on layer properly

Hey this is my first post on the forums and I have been having problems with the lighting effects filter in my cc version.
It is hard to describe but in the lighting effects editor where I can position my lights and stuff I have 2 spotlights shining on a object.
When I am in the lighting effects editor it looks how I want it to look. While when I click ok to apply it to the layer, photoshop actually stops responding (at one point crashed) and removes the desired effect.
I am not sure what it is doing but it is very annoying and I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem happen.
    Images
    In the lighting effects editor
Once I click OK to apply it to the layer
As you can see, it changes the way it looks in a few minor ways. If anyone knows how I can get it to stay looking like how it was in the first image, I would love to know.
    Thanks!

So nobody knows about this issue or has any tips to try and solve this?

  • Urgent - Need help with Lighting Effects Filter

    Hi,
I need urgent help on something regarding the Lighting Effects filter in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I need lighting effect urgently to complete a project.
I am using Photoshop CS5 on a Windows Vista computer in 64-bit mode.
On the net it is given that you can run photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode to use the lighting effects filter - both on Mac and PC.
    My Problem:
While on the net it is given how to change from 64-bit to 32-bit and vice-versa, I have my Photoshop CS5 installed on 'E - Drive' and not on 'C - Drive' due to lack of space. I have followed all the instructions on how to open it in 32-bit mode on the net, but I still cannot use the lighting effects plugin.
What I need is if someone could give simple and clear instructions on how to open Photoshop CS5 32-bit version instead of opening the default 64-bit version on Windows Vista - that would be great.
    Looking forward to answers.
    Thanks.

That advice about running the 32 bit version of cs5 for the Render> Lighting Effects filter
only pertains to the mac version of photoshop cs5.
The lighting effects filter does work in the 64 bit version of photoshop cs5 on windows, your
document just has to be 8 bits/channel and in the RGB Color mode (Image>Mode) same
for using the lighting effects filter in the 32 bit version of cs5.
Added: In general it's frowned upon installing photoshop on drives other than C drive.

  • In PS CS6, ALT key is in the light of replication lighting effects filter

The light can not be copied, only one adjustment, this adjustmentout of the light is not the same. How to solve...
Sorry, I am not good at English, only through online translation ofdialogue, the syntax is wrong, please forgive me

Alpha channels are 16-bit in a 16-bit per channel document. As Christoph said, selections are limited to 8-bit, so if you make a channel from a selection then that channel will have 8-bit quantisation.
Here is an example of Lighting Effects filter using a channel containing a 16-bit radial gradient as a height-map, and where the filter is quantising the height values to 8-bit.

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Lighting Effects filter quantises 16-bit height-map to 8-bit in a 16-bit document

I've edited this message: one complaint has been removed - it was my mistake - conroy.
    Photoshop 13.0.1
    OS X 10.6.8
16 bits per channel RGB mode.
The Lighting Effects filter quantises the optional height-map channel to 8 bits, which can result in a very obvious terraced-slopes appearance and moiré.
(Adobe, please do not simply reply with "you should be using 13.0.4" unless that actually fixes the problem.)

  • Render Lighting Effects Filter Crashing PS CS4 on only Mac Pro Towers...8 Cores!!!

I just recently received a brand new Apple 8 core 2.93Ghz Mac Pro tower and also had the previous 3.33Ghz 8 core with the same exact issue. I have 16GB of memory on this tower and my last tower had 16GB as well. Everytime I run the render lighting effects filter on certain files in PS it hangs up and then crashes on me. I know it is not the files because they work on my Macbook Pro's, my iMac, and have tested them on many other computers other than the Mac Pro tower's at the Apple Retail Store out by me. I ran the same files on their new Mac Pro and it crashed just like it did on my two towers, but was very random and not file specific. Some that crashed on mine opened on theirs and vice versa. I have worked with the Adobe top techs troubleshooting this and supposedly eliminated that it could be a preference related issue, permissions related issue, file issue, and have done many things like disabling Open GL, resetting prefs, reinstalling, trying in new user, in Rosetta, in safe mode, in the root user, etc...super thorough testing and it still happens. Both Apple and Adobe feel that it must be something going on with the Mac Pro tower, PS, and possibly how the graphics card interacts and renders the filter. Actually I opened these files in my PS CS3 and it rendering the lighting effects filter, but was unable to run the filter on the entire image and actually left a 1/4 inch of the bottom of the image untouched which was completely bizarre. I have screenshots and console logs too if someone wants to see. I am REALLY curious to hear if anyone else has run into this problem or if they try what happens. Thanks and curious to hear some input. Regards, Anthony
Here are three links to the files...the first one is the file that is crashing my CS4 when running filter>render>lighting effects. The second is what it did to my file after running that same file in CS3, and the last is what the preview dialog box showed in CS3 when not running the filter on the entire image.

Hey there Bryan...I actually just talked with a level 2 Apple product specialist today after generating a case with Apple and he brought this to Apple Engineers and apparently since it is third party...meaning Adobe....it first has to be documented with Adobe after they look into the problem and then Adobe apparently will or should work together with Apple to help find a solution to the problem.  This problem is very easy to reproduce on any 8 core Mac Pro tower and am hoping more people use the darn render lighting effects filter and get on everyone's case.  I also had someone I know who is a Photoshop guru...Jim DiVitale test it on his 8 core in his photo studio and he was able to get his PS CS4 to crash like a bomb too.  There is obviously something going on that needs to be looked at hopefully MUCH sooner than later so let's see what comes out of this.  It really does suck because this is a filter that I actually do use in my workflow quite often.  I just know that before I even attempt to run this filter I make absolutely certain I save everything and then hit that darn OK button.      Keep on them and try to bring as much attention to this issue as possible so we can come to a resolution fast!  @nthony

  • Lighting effects filter greyed out in CS6

I have CS6 on Windows 7 on my PC all 32 bit.  The new lighting effects filter is greyed out although the old one is available.     On my laptop which is also Windows 7 but 64 bit, the new filter is available.   Can I get the new filter on my PC?   My video card driver is up to date.

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/979969?tstart=0 I'm afraid that this videocard is not powerful enough to drive the new 3D-based Lighting effects:

  • CS5 and Lighting Effects filter

I'm very used to using the Lighting Effects Filter which I can't seem to use with files that have gone through Nik software plug-ins.  Can anyone point to any video tutorial or other educational material which I can use to find a way to emulate the lighting effects filter?  I'm using CS5 V12.1 x64.  I'm not a professional so upgrading to CS6 is not feasible.
    Thanks.

Your reply prompted me to check bit depths of my files.  It appears the lighting effects filter only works (CS5 64-bit on a PC) on 8-bit files.  I generally manage my files through LR3.6 and when they are brought into CS5 they are 16-bit.  The older files I used the lighting effects filter on must have been brought directly into CS5 as those files seem to come in as 8-bit. So, not at all a Nik issue.  It doesn't solve the problem of not having access to that filter on the files I just finished editiing since they're all 16-bit but at least now I know what to look out and plan for.
    Thanks.

  • Photoshop cc lighting effects do not seem to work

I am trying to put spotlight on area in photo but from render - lighting effects all that happens is my workspace changes on the right to "lighting effects" but nothing works and I have to close this side and shut down photoshop just to go back to a normal "essential" workspace. == what is the problem?

I'm having the same issue as well. Just started using CC tonight on both my home and work Macs. My home computer is a late 2006 MacPro, 6GB RAM, 2.66ghz and the work computer is 2013 MacPro with way more guts in it. Photoshop at home runs terribly slow all together but I did manage to see some slight improvement when I switched off "Use Graphics Processor" in the Preferences panel (Prefs > Performance) but this also turns off the Lighting effects filter. I remote logged in to my work Mac and using the same file (saved in the cloud), applied the lighting filter and it worked perfectly. All that to say, I'm pretty certain is a graphics processor/memory issue more than it being a CC issue. At home, the filter attempts to work, stops, and the only thing left is the properties panel like the effect is active.
Looks like I need some upgrades.
    Hope this helps!

  • After Effects is not available in the apps list

After Effects is not available in the apps list on creative cloud that I just downloaded.
I tried to download it from the site, but It would automatically launche creative cloud which, again, doesn't include after effects !!
    What should I do ?

Apparently I'm using 32-bit operating system
    and AE requires 64-bit support.
