Lightroom 4.2 is converting images to b&w upon import.

My lightroom 4.2 installation just started automatically converting all my images to b&w on import.  It looks like is applying a preset, but the develop settings are set to none.  I can open the image with the canon raw file tools, and with Picasa in full color no problem. Has anyone come across this before or have any suggestions?

Look at the toning area of Develop when viewing one of these photos and determine what makes the photos B&W:  the Treatment set to Black & White along the top of the Basic toning section or the Saturation = 0 at the bottom of the Basic toning section or something else?
Regardless of which, perhaps you saved new LR defaults when on a photo with no color.  Do you know if you have purposely set new LR defaults at any point?  If not then it’s probably safe to reset the defaults; otherwise, you might check what things are changed in your current defaults and then reset things back to factory defaults then create new defaults with the settings you want.
To set new LR Default settings, you press and hold the Alt and click the Set Default… button.  This will ask if you want to reset to the Adobe defaults or set the defaults to the settings of the current photo.  For the latter, you’ll want to have a photo set to exactly the settings you want all imported photos (from that camera) to have.

  • Converting WAV files to mp3 upon import

I have changed my import settings in itunes preferences to encode incoming wav files to mp3, restarted my computer, but when I import the wav file, it stays a wav file, no matter how I set my preferences. Why can't I make mp3's, or that is how the F**K can I get my computer to do what I'm asking it???
P.S. I still love my mac, but jesus, come on!!!

I have changed my import settings in itunes preferences to encode incoming wav files to mp3, restarted my computer, but when I import the wav file, it stays a wav file, no matter how I set my preferences.
Import will only convert to the selected format when your RIP from CD or select a file already in iTunes then menu Advanced -> Create {import settings} version.
Make sure your Import settings are MP3.
Hold Option, go to iTunes menu Advanced -> Convert selection to MP3, then select the WAV files you want to add to yoru library
This will convert them to MP3 and add them at the same time.

  • Does Lightroom convert images to CMYK?

I need to convert images to CMYK to submit photos for an article. I know Photoshop will convert, but don't know which software. If Lightroom does not convert to CMYK, which would I need to get?

    p3vanisle wrote:
So I can locate the CMYK profile my printer is using, and install it into my design suite (PS, Illustrator, InDesign) and then export relevant filetypes in that color space? That would be terribley useful.
Yes, you have to install the profile on your computer. In Photoshop CSxx you go >Edit >Convert to Profile, and select the CMYK-profile under <Destination Space>. In Acrobat you go >Edit >Color Management, and select the profile under <Working Space>. But only Photoshop will convert the image to CMYK, whereas - at least for my understanding - Acrobat will display the image as if it were CMYK but not actually convert it.
If I do the conversion here (open their images in PS or Acrobat and convert the profile) aren't I still stuck in the 'I don't know what shade of pink you want that flower to be' still anyways?
If you get a RGB image from a client, you have to assume that the colors are as wanted. This is not different when you get a CMYK image. The problem for you is that nor everybody has a calibrated monitor, so an image might look good on their monitor but the actual color numbers will produce a print that looks different. But there is nothing you can do, except - if you have the time - adjust obvious off-colors. For instance you know the skin-color of caucasian (white) people. You know how green a lawn is, and you know that most brides wear a white gown. So if for instance the gown is blue-ish, or the skin looks overly pink, you can adjust that. More you cannot do. In case of a flower you can only accept the photo as is - unless you know this type of flower very well.
But the evaluation of color is only possible if you have a calibrated monitor that is re-calibrated regularly (every week or so). If your monitor is not calibrated you have no way of knowing if the off-color is due to the color numbers of the delivered image or a result of your un-calibrated monitor that displays the colors differently than the color numbers warrant.
If you use a calibrated monitor the colors should not change on conversion to CMYK. You can use the Softproof feature in Photoshop to check if colors are out of gamut.
    - my degree is in design, yes, but we didn't cover printing and prepress specifics at all.
Yes, I have noticed in my work that the designers often have no knowledge about color management, printing, and pre-press. Good on you that you care and want to learn!
Keep on asking if you wish.

  • Image in Lightroom doesn't match exported image viewed in Photoshop

After all my hard work in Lightroom, I export the image to a folder on my hard drive. When I open this exported image in Photoshop and view it alongside the Lightroom version of its "twin" in Lightroom, there is a significant difference. Why is this? I want to use these images in my books, but my time is wasted if I end up with anything other than what I created in Lightroom. Shouldn't these images match exactly?

Thanks Jao and Michael...the color management idea makes a lot of sense.
Adding to this idea, when I open the Pshop file I get a message about the doc having an embedded profile that doesn't match current RGB working space, and the usual 3 options: Use the embedded profile, Convert color to the working space, or discard embedded profile. No matter which option I choose, none of the opened docs match the Lightroom version.
The color balance is fine, but the colors aren't as vibrant. The Pshop photo is dull and lifeless compared to the Lightroom version. I used Clarity which added subtle brightness, and Vibrance to crank up the color in LR which added wonderful dimensionality and punch to the landscape scene, but the Pshop version has dulled these back down.

  • I am an absolute newcomer to Lightroom.  I have downloaded images from camera (OMD EM1) and divided them into folders.  Some folders work ok in Develop mode.  With other folders I get the words "This file could not be found".  What should I do

As an absolute newcomer to Lightroom 5 I have downloaded images direct from camera (IOlympus EM-1) and divided them into folders. When I go into Develop mode, some folders can be developed ok , but with images from two other folders I get the message "This file could not be found".  What should I do?

may i suggest opening the files in Olymous Viewer 3  and exporting them (you can do some editing there if you wish or not) asTIFF files. After that you can import the new files into LR. LR seems to like tiiff more than .orf files
The advantage to using OV3 is that it seems to do a much better job converting RAW EM1 files. Colors are more accurate ( my red flower pot turned orange when loaded directly into lightroom)
. The tiff files just LOOK better in LR  after the conversion . there is a youtube on this subject and when i tried it myself i was impressed

  • On Importing raw images to Lightroom  only some of the images will import.

I have used LightRoom for years and just started having this issue.  I select all of my raw images and "Open with" LightRoom 5. I can view all of the images that I want to import. It then imports only some. There are times it will import some and then freezes up in Import mode. I have even converted  images to dng and found it to do the same thing.  As a professional photographer this is frustrating!

If you mean "Open With" in your operating system, I am surprised that you get any images to import this way. As far as I know, Adobe has (tried to) disable this as a method of importing photos, and so I doubt you will find any help here in this forum on this matter, as this is not a function of Lightroom (although you used to be able to do it in earlier versions).

  • Converting Images to B&W Automatically when Shooting Tethered

I'm cool with setting up my camera to shoot tethered into Lightroom. No problem there. What I would like to know is if it is possible to automatically convert the JPEG files into grayscale upon transfer into Lightroom without having to press any further buttons to do so, ie. aoutomatically transfer images from camera to Lightroom in color, then convert to grayscale without any further action on my part. I know on "Import", this is no problem as a Preset can be used. But, there doesn't seem to be the ability to use a preset when shooting tethered that I am aware of.
I know I can set the camera to shoot grayscale and that would be one way to solve the problem. Ideally, though, I would like the images to come into lightroom as color and then convert to maintain color options later.
    Thanks for your help!

In the menu command File > Auto Import > Auto Import Settings, you can select a Develop preset. Just choose one that converts to black and white.
Edit - but re-reading your question, no. You would have to export the files to get b&w jpegs. Maybe I did understand first time!

Please give me the solution to convert PDF to PDF/A?

I've just read a footnote in the API documentation which indicates that the transformPDF function cannot be used for this purpose:
    "GS_Enterprise said on Nov 24, 2007 at 12:03 PM :
Please note that the parameter "inPdfDoc" for transformPDF assumes that the stream content is an XFA-based PDF, and that it's not an XFA-based PDF with a PDF background (also known as "XFA foreground"). In other words, this function does not convert any input PDF to PDF/A, but only those PDFs generated from an XFA template which does not include any static PDF content as a background."

  • Converting Images to CMYK for Print Publication

When in my workflow should I be converting images to CMYK for print publication?
Currently, I shoot RAW photographs with my DSLR in Adobe RGB, import the images into Photoshop for manipulation and then convert the final, sized image to CMYK before placing it in my Indesign document. Before going to print, I convert my files to PDF using the [PDF/X-1a:2001] preset. I use a calibrated system with a profile set for my monitor.
Since many of my pictures have shades of green, I'm often disappointed with the conversion to CMYK because I lose saturation and brightness. Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a better way of preserving the quality of colour in my images when going to a commercial printer?

To see in InDesign what color shifts will occur, use View=>Proof Colors.
I would also recommend View=>Overprint Preview.
Yes there are color shifts when converting RGB to CMYK, but those are due to the fact that the gamut of CMYK is significantly less than AdobeRGB or even sRGB. The same color shifts going to CMYK will occur whether you convert the image in Photoshop or in InDesign during PDF export or at the RIP.
Keeping the color in ICC color managed RGB has the advantage that last minute changes can be made as to what CMYK printing conditions are used, i.e. all CMYK is not the same. Furthermore, if you convert RGB to CMYK early in the workflow, you lose the ability to maintain the color gamut for display of the PDF as well as for printing to high fidelity color devices, i.e., offset or digital (especially inkjet) devices that have extra colorants such as light cyan, light magenta, orange, and/or green to dramatically expand the gamut. Once you lose the gamut in your imagery via conversion to CMYK, you can't go back.

  • When saving an image in PS CS 6, and going back to Lightroom 5. The original image and the edited image are at the end of the line up.

I'm using a Mac, Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS 6. I've started having an issue with the line up in Lightroom 5 after saving an image from PS CS 6. For some reason when I save the edited image form CS 6 it's taking the edited image and the original image and putting it at the end of the line up in Lightroom. If I take the edited image and move it to the right of the original it will put both of them back in the line up where they should be. How do I fix this. I've been looking in the menu for some kind of setting  with no luck.

  • Image looks quite different when imported from camera to Lightroom

    Hi there,
I am hoping that there is someone out there that might be able to help me with a problem I have.
I took a number of photos yesterday and I uploaded them to lightroom. The photos looked properly exposed with a nice color on the camera LCD screen. When I imported and then opened these photos in Lightroom, I noticed that the photos were underexposed with an orange cast on skintones.  The photos were not very nice at all, and I played with levels etc, but could not get the same look I saw on the LCD.
I shot in JPG Fine, colour profile in camera is Adobe RGB (1998). imac monitor is calibrated.
Has anyone experienced this or know how I might be able to correct the image to look more like what I am seeing on the LCD when I am shooting?
Any help greatly appreciated - Thanks!
    Donna

Since you are shooting jpeg, it is not the profile issue, so there are a small list of causes left.
    1. The camera LCD is lying to you. This is very possible, but most cameras have a display that, while not trustworthy absolutely, at least renders skintones sort of OK. You can test this by posting one of your originals (so NOT the lightroom edited versions) somewhere for us to see. We can check if the skintones are normal.
    2. The calibration is bad. Sometimes calibration hardware is simply defective and you will get bad results no matter what. To check this, use a color managed browser (Safari since you have a Mac is fine) and check out this page. The top image should look OK (normal skintones) no matter if you roll over your mouse or not.
    3. If it is not 1 or 2, Lightroom is applying either auto-tone or some camera defaults to your images or you are applying a develop preset upon import. Check this by opening the original directly in preview and comparing to the version in Lightroom. If this is the case, go to your Lightroom preferences, hit the Presets Tab. Uncheck "Apply auto tone adjustments". Then click on "reset all default Develop settings". Now go back to your images and "reset" their develop settings, which is easy to do in the quick develop panel you get in Library. Also, next time you import, make sure you do not have any presets selected.

What edition of LR 5? What edition of ACR does PSCS 6 contain. If they are not parallel (same edition number x in [5 or 8].x ), is LR making a tiff or psd rendition of the image?
