Lightroom 4.3 corrupts my RAW images stored on local SSD harddisk

Using Lightroom 4.3 with Camera RAW 7.3 on latest MacBook Pro with 256 GB SSD harddisk, 8 GB internal memory bought 2 months ago. Hardware shows no other problems or malfunctioning, no issues with RAM or otherwise.
Started Lightroom 4.3 did an import from perfect images (viewed before using various other software packages) stored on the harddisk. Used option ADD to add to the catalog. Almost immediately certain images were showing missing areas or areas with pink/white stripes, etc.
I didn't even touch the images to view or edit them. The images were corrupted on disk as previewing them with other software packages showed.

If we're talking about the raw rendering, and not just the jpeg, then this means transfer hardware is OK.

That is not so true. Hard disk, ram, cpu, ..., - all play a continuing role.

No proprietary RAW format e.g. I use standard Canon 550D settings. Not sure how proprietary you call that and what I can do about that and why Lightroom would have a problem with it. If that would be an issue I would expect a lot more issues from other users.
A proprietary raw file is any raw file that is not DNG. The distinction is important because:
* Proprietary raws can not be corrupted by Lightroom (that statement has 99.999999999999% probability of being true, in the context discussed so far).
* DNGs on the other hand, are, in some circumstances, completely re-written, and can, therefore, be corrupted on Lr's watch (due to hardware failure). Granted, if such failure does occur, Lr is able to give a fairly clear & unambiguous message, since it keeps check codes for raw data integrity assurance. Note: such protection assumes the image was good when initially converted to DNG, and went bad after-ward - which is not necessarily the case: thus a good reason to visually inspect all images after conversion to DNG.

*iff* it is certain that raw image (raw-rendering, as distinguished from jpeg preview), was OK, before accessing via Lightroom, the other software is a non-factor.

I am a bit confused why a calibration file would get off-balance after some time? You need to recalibrate the display once in while, but that's because the display is changing.
I can understand Lightroom has problems with a corrupted profile, but how can it get corrupted as I would assume it is only read (not written) and why is Photoshop not having these issues?
My focus is now on recalibration of display to rule out that item
Not my area of expertise. However, in general, if you're having uncaught disk or hardware problems, or even software bugs, files can become corrupted - not just image files.
PS - Did the Mac/HW test include the drive where photos are stored?

  • Why is Lightroom 5.3 corrupting my RAW files?

Running on my MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5, sporadic RAW files are now being corrupted between the time I 'Backup LR' at day's end shutdown, and then open LR the next day to continue working.
A RAW image file that was perfect the day before, now appears with the warning "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged." across it in the 'Develop' module screen.
When upgrading to 5.0 (5.3 now) two weeks ago, I followed exactly the 'best practices' guidelines of Michael Reichman/Jeff Schewe LR5 video tutorial.
I've been a LR user since the very beginning, and have been shooting professionally for 30 years.  What in the world is going on with Adobe that for the first time in my career, I am losing image files due to corruption w/in Lightroom?!?

Try opening the files in preview to see if it is Lightroom that is confused (i.e. catalog corruption). Also check your backup files with preview whether they open. Also check whether you have correct permissions on the folder the files are in. Incorrect permissions there sometimes leads to error messages in Lightroom. It is quite unlikley that Lightroom is damaging your files. It is usually hardware problems like a harddisk going bad if your files are becoming corrupted. Lightroom as a rule does not write to your files (except maybe if they are dngs and you have "automatically write changes into xmp" turned on. Run Disk Utility on the drive to see if there are any issues that the OS can fix. If this is your startup disk, you might have to boot from the recovery partition to repair any damage.

  • Is Lightroom working on jpeg or raw image, if both are available?

Sorry all, I know this is out there somewhere, but my searching didn't come up with an answer.
If I shoot my original images with raw and jpeg simultaneously, and both image types are stored in the saved location, which of these is Lightroom using as it's starting point for editing? Another way to ask this question is, when I save my Lightroom changes, to which image is the parametric data applied? Is this a stupid question? I'm not sure why it matters, even to me, but I would like to know, although if I do an export of the modified image, I'd rather it make the 'changes' to the raw file, even if I'm exporting as jpeg. Or does it even matter? Am I just babbling like an idiot here? Am I totally messed up in my thinking? Please help, or tell me to just go away...

My "probing" question would be: why put both in the Library? If you work on just the RAW file, you'll save space, and never worry about which version of an image is current, etc. (Yes, I am aware that some just prefer to see how the camera converts the date to a JPEG)
    Good luck!

  • Does Lightroom 4.2 support d3200 Raw images

I tried importing but all that showed up was the JPEG. Is there a plugin available?
    Thanks in advance.

According to this, LR 4.2 should support it.
It may be an operating system issue if you are connecting directly to the camera via USB. Try to use a card reader instead.
P.S. There are no "raw-support-plugins" for LR (like for Photoshop). Raw support updates in LR are always done by a completely new LR update version which contains the newest build-in Camera Raw (which cannot be updated separately like in Photoshop).
Edit: Correction: Must read: no "raw-support-plugins" (not now ...)

  • Lightroom not seeing RAW images from Canon 20D

I am running Lightroom and if I take RAW images on the Canon 20D and I click Import, select the 20D as the source, it says "No images to import" now if I open the EOS transfer utility and download it there, save it as a CR2 and then Open it in Lightroom it all works fine. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm having horrible problems uploading my RAW files, captured with my 20D, using a cardreader. More often than not, Lightroom hangs after a dozen or two files, though more are imported than are actually displayed. Even when a "successful" import occurs, at least ten or fifteen files are ignored or rejected for reasons that are utterly unclear. I never have similar problems with Photoshop Bridge.
I'm running Windows XP with 2GB of RAM, an AMD Athlon 64 3400 Processor (2.2 GHz), NVidia GForce FX5500 graphics card, and an absurd amount of free space in my RAID array twin internal 250GB HD's and 320GB external drive. Courtesy of absurd problems with Roxio in the past, I've updated DirectX and all my drivers and UNinstalled and roll-back my OS to Windows MediaPlayer 10 (ver. 11 really screwed up my system, a problem lots of people, apparently, have encountered).
PLEASE HELP! I've read and heard so much positive feedback on Lightroom - but for me, the darn thing, thus far, has been a bit of a waste of money. Workflow tools aren't worth anything if the beginning of the proces - uploading images - is a huge problem.

  • Editing RAW images

1.) Can RAW images be edited/color corrected in PS CS5? OR do you need to use Camera Raw from Bridge?
2.) For basic color correcting, is there an advantage to moving up to LightRoom?
    Thanks.

    1. Raw images can be opened by the Camera Plugin which can be accessed by Bridge or PS. Just open as smart object (raw files) or open as camera raw (will work on raw, tiff, jpg & PSD files) from PS.
    2. I can't imagine any "basic" advantages in color correction (maybe in file organization, batching or interface), but I have virtually no experience with LR.

  • Storing content (image) to UNIX local disk using content repository (OAC0)

    Hello
I want to setup a temporary content repository in oac0 to write to local disk (UNIX file system).  The program calls content repository V6 which I have set up.  The V6 content repository attempts store image.  We have no Content Server for this piece of testing work.  Not data archiving is required.  Only content (image) storing to local disk.  Is there a way to setup content repository to store content to local disk without the need for a web service?
    thanks
    dave

    Dear Dave,
I think the best way for this scenario would be to define a data carrier in transaction DC20. For this data carrier you can for exmaple maintain a network path where the originals are stored.
In CV01N or CV02N you can then add the original and just enter the data carrier and the filename. To access the file in the network path you must not check it in. Till the file is checked out the system will always try to access the file in its original directory without needing any content server.
    Best regards,

  • Sony RX100 Mk3 - Image corruption on RAW import to Lightroom

I'm using Abobe CC - newest versions
I just got back from Europe with about 4,000 photos. I noticed a problem when I imported from my new RX100 mk3. It's the first time I've used the camera, which I'm pleased to report creates excellent images for its size.
After importing this massive number of photos, I find:
    Jpegs are fine.
    RAW is fine generally speaking.
However, when the sony was specifically in continuous bracket mode and shooting RAW (auto-shooting a bracketed set of 3 or 5 photos with one button press), I occasionally got some really crazy artifacts.
Basically thin stripes across the photos where the stripes are misaligned with the rest of the photo.
These artifacts do not appear on the camera LCD screen, and they were not created when the raw images were imported into either iPhoto or Sony PlayMemories software--even when subsequently moved into Lightroom.
The artifacts only occurred when importing the raw images directly into Lightroom from the RX1000 iii (i.e. from the SD card).
Just reporting it. My workaround is to replace the bad ones with imports from other software. But I probably won't be using Lightroom for importing until this is fixed.

Hrm.  That does seem to be the issue as I experienced the same situation as described, with seeing the preview for a few seconds and then it goes crazy.  Just never seen it change so drastically before, and couldn't figure out how to get Lightroom to show it anywhere close to what the preview was.

  • How set Elements9 Organizer as default to upload raw images from card reader? Defaults to Lightroom

How do I set Elements9 Organizer as my default to upload raw images from computer's  sd card reader?  It defaults to Lightroom.

The two raw files you've uploaded to dropbox are corrupted so Lightroom and Photoshop are giving you the correct message.  At least with these two, the embedded JPG preview is there but the raw data is not correct so cannot be rendered.  Here is the error that Canon's own software gives when the files are attempted to be edited:
You should reattempt to copy the images from the memory cards to your computer using a card reader and an operating-system function (Explorer or Finder) to do it rather than LR or a cable connected to the camera, then see if things work any better.  If you already used a card reader, then try a different one and see if the situation improves.
If you cannot get a better set of images by retransferring them, then we can work through how to extract the embedded JPG previews en masse.

I am using Lightroom 5.7, 64 bit with Windows 7 Professional. For no apparent reason, I now get an error message when I export a photo, say a raw image to a JPG. However, the exported image seems to be OK. But now I notice that my LR directory of folders in Library view does not show images correctly: If there is a folder with sub-folder(s), the folder will indicate 0 images, but the sub-folders show the proper number of images. What happened and is there a fix? I tried uninstalling Lightroom and re-installing, but problem persists.

  • Can't move Raw images in Lightroom 4

    Hi all,
I've watched all of the tutorials and read all I can to get to the bottom of this to no avail. I understand that I need to use the foilders panel in the library module to move photos, my problem is that the folder module does not show any destination folders at all!
When I import my images I create a job and place the images in a subfolder named Raw Files eg.  2013 Jobs > 075 Robert and Jess E-Shoot > Raw Files
This way all of my images are in a folder that is job related. Occasionally, however, I will forget to change the import folder when importing the Raws, and the images for the next job will go into the Raw folder for the previous job. I'd like to be able to move the raw images to the correct folder, but in the folder panel the only path showing is the path I've imported to.
In the case above, my 2013 Jobs file should show 75 subfolders of individual jobs, but there is only one showing. I need to be able to see the destination folder in lightroom to move the Raws to their proper home. As I can't see the destination folder I can't move any files, and I end up having to try to work it out in the operating system.
Can anyone tell me how to get all of the subfolders to show?
    Thanks, Antony

    Create the folder here:
Then you can move your files to it.

  • My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images

    Any ideas?

My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images from Lightroom and choosing the "Render using Lightroom option when it popped up in the dialogue box. She has been doing this for over a year and a half without any problem. Today when she hit Command E no dialogue box appeared and the image just opened in Photoshop. I'm concerned that all of her Lightroom edits are not being rendered to Photoshop. Anyone have an idea as to how we can get the "Render using Lightroom" dialogue back?

  • Oversaturated RAW images in Lightroom 4

All of a sudden, all of my RAW images are oversaturated and over contrasted in Lightroom 4.  When they are initially "loading" the photo looks great, but then when it loads the pictures it is WAY oversaturated and overcontrasted.  I have not changed any settings in Lightroom, so I am not sure what has happened.  I have attached screen shots to show it when it's loading and when it is loaded.  This is a HUGE difference.  All of my settings on the menu on the right are at 0 or whatever the original setting is in the Develop mode.  I've checked everything in the column on the right in the develop mode, settings, etc. I have checked to make sure that my Lightroom is not pending any updates and that my camera is up to date. I've looked in several forums.  From what I can see, there have been others with this issue, but I can never seem to find a resolution to fix it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Camera: Nikon D7100 (if this matters)

If something changed recently, it is likely one of:  you’ve recently shifted from shooting JPG to shooting RAW, a LR Preset being applied in Import, your LR defaults are different than before, your monitor profile is different, your video drivers have been updated, your video-card’s control-panel settings are different, or your monitor’s own settings are different.
When you newly import an image are all the toning sliders still set to zero?  (i.e. Exposure, Contrast, …, Clarity, Vibrance, Saturaton)  A screenshot of the Basic panel at the top right of the Develop module would show this.
What Profile do you have selected in the Camera Calibration area?  A screenshot of the bottom right of the Develop module would show this.
To confirm whether your LR defaults have changed to something non-zero, you can make a virtual copy of a representative image and then click the Reset button and see if all the toning sliders return to zero in the Basic panel, and also check the Profile setting in the Camera Calibration area.
If you want to upload that specific pumpkin image to http://www.dropbox.com/ and post a public download link to it, here, then others can load it on their systems and see what it looks like, to compare with your screenshots.
So far the difference between the two screenshots appears to be camera-embedded JPG and default LR settings which will never be the same.  The 2nd (right) screenshot in your initial post also looks out-of-focus compared to the initial camera preview which seems odd.  Maybe things hadn’t fully-rendered, yet.

  • RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

Your question is a little unclear. In a "normal" Lightroom/Photoshop workflow the raw images do not open from Lightroom into Camera Raw. Lightroom has all of the Camera Raw functionality in the develop module. When you choose to open an image in Photoshop, and Lightroom and Photoshop are synchronized (i.e. referencing the same version of Camera Raw) then Camera Raw is simply used to interpret the Lightroom adjustments as the image is transferred to Photoshop. If Camera Raw is an older version then Lightroom offers you the choice to open the image or create a PSD or TIF file that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments. But in either case, opening in Camera Raw is not part of the workflow. It is possible to open the image as a smart object or convert the image to the smart object in Photoshop and then open it in Camera Raw. That is done from within Photoshop or is one of the open options in Lightroom. If you choose to go the smart object route the image first has to be opened in Photoshop and then from there you can open it in Camera Raw.
