Lightroom/ACR colours for Leica M8

I am (and have been for a number of months) trying unsuccessfully to obtain good colour with both LR1.3.1 and ACR4.3.1 with DNG files from a Leica M8. I have expended many hours running calibration routines (Thomas Fors and Rags Gardner's scripts) to obtain settings for the 'camera calibration' module.
Yes I know that colour is a subjective thing, but the colours which routinely come out of LR and ACR are not credible as opposed to incredible!
Since the Leica M8 was calibrated by Adobe in ACR 3.6 I believe, there have been a number of firmware updates for the camera and the majority of owners are using the IR cut filters to control the sensitivity the camera has in that part of the spectrum. Options exist in the camera menu to select whether these are fitted or not. They make a significant difference to the look of the image and therefore the settings needed by the RAW processor.
How would it be possible to request that Adobe recalibrate the Leica M8 with and without these filters in place and update the algorithm settings which the user is unable to adjust in both LR and ACR? I am not alone with my dissatisfaction with colour integrity issues being widely reported by many other Leica M8 users on web forums.
The Leica M8 camera is popular, selling far more units than was expected and probably has a disproportionate number of pre-eminent users; therefore it would seem justified to ask for the re-calibration to be carried out. If Adobe cannot do this, does anyone know how users might be able to effect this task?
If I use Capture One, then I am able to select a range of ICC profiles and easily obtain wonderful images, although the 'canned' Generic UV/IR filter one works very competently indeed. The 3D colour space being adjusted in the Adobe colour engine by just 6 single slider for Hue and Saturation in each of the R, G and B channels is too simplistic and these adjustments cannot be global across the whole range of tones and expect to get commendable results.
Many thanks
Baxter

Thanks Richard
I downloaded them and read the feature on which they are based. Essentially it is what I have been doing to date. The settings there are probably more extreme than those I have been using in terms of saturation.
My understanding is that LR/ACR identifies the camera name in the Metadata and then goes to a conversion routine/look-up table using hard-wired parameters which are based on Adobe's tests on those cameras. The presence of the IR cut filter makes a big difference to the look of the image. Thus I believe that the calibration for this internal setting mechanism needs to be amended after the camera has been reassessed.
Accepting that Adobe have assembled major players to help devise the way in which to convert RAW files, I am not saying it will not work, just that the output for this particular camera is awry. It may be that other camera types produce good colour from LR/ACR on account of their calibration. Maybe not, are there with Capture One experience who also find the LR/ACR colour conversion lacking in comparison?

  • Lightroom 5.5 for Mac Adjustment Brush not working

Hi all, since updating to Lightroom 5.5 for Mac Adjustment Brush has stopped working entirely. I can open the menu and it does display the brush within the menu. When dragging the tool into the image it changes to the mouse arrow which doesn't have any function. Any ideas? Thank you very much for your help. Chris

And- do you actually press or hold down the left-mouse button and drag the cursor on the image? as you would a paint brush. A 'Pin' will appear where you start the brush stroke.
And- Is it possible that you have the switch at the base of the brush panel sliders turned off ?   (The toggle switch on the same line as "Reset" and "Close")
Pressing "O" only turns the overlay mask on/off to give a visual indication 'Where' you have applied the brush.
Pressing "SHIFT+O" changes the colour of the MASK overlay- Red, Green, Grey, Clear
"O" does not affect any editing of the image.

  • Specular Highlight colour problem - Leica M8 RAW files

I have sent feedback to Apple regarding this problem.
Use of the moire slider does not eliminate the coloured dots on bright specular highlights, for example sun reflecting off water droplets.
By comparison, Capture One software produces bright white specular highlights.
Hope Apple can improve this rendering in future versions of Aperture.

    Thanks Richard

  • ACR 4.4, ACR 3.3...What does the "ACR" stand for ?

In the Camera Calibration tab in Camera Raw or Lightroom, we can choose the profile from the menu.
There are so many profiles in the menu, ACR 4.4, ACR 3.3...What does the "ACR" stand for ?

ACR x.x designates an older style of profile where Adobe named their profiles for the version of Adobe Camera RAW that first supported the camera--basically the vintage of the profile, so if Adobe updated the profile then you'd be able to pick whether you wanted the old one or the new one.

  • Lightroom or Bridge for large libraries?

I have some two hundred thousand images in thousands of files. Bridge allows me to immediately access the entire lot, and to do metadata searches- although I have had problems with Bridge crashing if I try to search among too many files. Lightroom is advertised as the central sorting place for libraries, but with the time and effort it would take to import them all, it seems obvious that Bridge should be used to access my library, and Lightroom used just for processing new imagery. Any thoughts?

I too have about that many images to manage, and some days hundreds to cull, develop, title, keyword, and sort to a long established, well organized, stable, effective hierarchical folder structure. At the present time, I can do that work about twice as fast using Bridge CS3 beta 2 --with one caveat--I infrequently will have to restart Bridge if I am saving out a large number of final files to another format, because of Bridge beta 2s present memory leak'. Which no doubt will be fixed by the time it ships in about a week from now. Even so, it is still much faster for MY workflow (based on timed tests).
Bridge is more configurable overall, has a better ( more configurable and less crowded )UI and ACR 4 UI, is faster with file I/O, previews, etc, simply because it is not dependent on a DB. I already have a mature DAM that is fast and full featured.
Will LR be brought up to speed with respect to features, configurability, code speed, etc, to where it is competitive with Bridge CS3 plus a mature DAM? We'll (should) soon see. And I hope so--I like the concept! But until that is the case, there is no way that I would even consider moving my 200k images to its DB. Library is simply a workflow bottleneck at this time.
By the way, I am curious as to why you say that LR should be used for processing new files? What is the advantage of LR Develop--at least in its present version over ACR 4--they both use the same code, and the UI of ACR 4 is far less crowded, organized better ( horizontal tabs requiring less mouse movement than one long vertical slider), faster previews, etc, allowing faster workflow?

  • Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300

Dear All! Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300. Some of the images are completely ruined. I am sure Adobe must be aware of this problem. What could be done? Is there a solution? Many thanks for your help. Regards, Stanislav

You want "something different" but this "something different" is quite hard to define.
I want a result which reflects the result on the camera. Have the feeling the display
of the D800 is not the greatest, at least (not only the color issue which is often discussed)
but also the exposure. Often I think I would need to compensate it, but then afterwards
on the computer the non corrected version looks most of the time better.
I think its interesting to see how allergic people react when the word jpeg comes up.
This is also just a rendered result, just by the camera. There are many options in my cam.
I like the vivid setting with some modifications. And that gives me a result I like.
And if I like the result, why shall I spend way more time to replicate it?
I do not talk about that I would want the jpeg, I only say that what I get color wise out of the
box is how I would like to look at it. I still want the capability to fix for example exposure  in image,
but I want the base the version I got from the jpeg view (or how the Nikon raw software could do).
On Lightroom I did not manage to have a profile that looked as appealing to me.
It also consumes way more time in my workflow to fix all pictures manually and results might differ.
To work on an image you need a starting point, I do not say the jpeg look is always perfect and
what I want all the time, but most of the time it is.
You say yourself you use profiles. So why should there not be a profile which automatically adjusts to the camera settings.
Its so frustrating to see a look which you like (the preview image when the pic is first accessed) and
then Lightroom switches to its own rendering which is flat and which I do not like.
For me its clearly something Adobe and/or Nikon should fix, like the mentioned "auto correct to preview look",
Nikon profiles/settings/raw-details in Lightroom or for example a Nikon import module.

  • Lightroom 5 Colour Sliders

I have Lightroom 5 & cannot get the actual colours on my tint & temperature sliders... how can I get them?
Each time I use the brush I'm basically guessing colours... have I not set something up properly????

    Tony,
My apology, I just read the message at the foot of the previous e-mail regarding e-mail attachments. I can confirm that all of my sliders in each module are in fact white, as you suggested regarding Lightroom 4.
    Thanks.

    Tony,
Thanks for the prompt response... I agree that the functionality works anyway, however it would be nice to have the option of looking directly at the colours, especially given that this is a standard function.
I have attached a picture of the sliders in a module.
    Thanks.

The actual problem of the sliders not showing their colours is alittle puzzling but the actual operation of the sliders should not be a guess since the whole thing is a "season to taste" adjustment anyway.
There was an issue in Lightroom 4 with sliders going white, associated with Mavericks OSX, but I am not aware of any issues such as you describe in Lightroom 5.

  • Updating raw support for Leica T

When will Apple be updating raw support for Leica T?  Eager to process my raw files.  B&H personnel pointed out that's one of the differences between Aperture and Lightroom, the quickness of support for new cameras.

As always the answer to this type of question is the same, only Apple knows when a particular camera will be supported (if at all) and they never say in advance.
You can send them feedback suing Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback. Don;t know if it helps but it can;t hurt.

  • ACR support for EOS 5D MkII

    Greetings.
I have a simple question - how soon can we expect to have ACR support for the 5D MkII once the camera starts shipping? I will need to sell my MkI to subsidise the upgrade, so will need to time my purchase so that ACR support will be out there when I take delivery.
    Kind regards
    Joanne

I've already got my CS4 upgrade and love it! It's the best yet! CS2 was okay, CS3 was better, but CS4 really is absolutely brilliant. The improvements are very plain to see.
Sorry Jeff, I didn't mean to put you on the spot - my sincere apologies!
Previously I've not had a problem. I wasn't gemmed up on raw when I bought my 20D (my first DSLR), and I didn't buy my 5D until more than a year after launch. I wasn't expecting a precise answer, only a generic one. The latest arrivals have been incorporated within weeks of them starting to ship and the 5D MKII has just missed the boat.
I haven't placed my order for my new camera yet, so can plan ahead and hold back a little. It was better to give consideration to the raw support now than jump in and suddenly find myself limited to DPP as that would spoil my fun with CS4/ACR5.1 and Lightroom 2.1.
    Thanks all.

It should show Lightroom as available to install in the Creative Cloud app.  If not, try exiting the app (the gear icon and choose quit), reboot and try again.  For me it didn't show "Install" against Lightroom for a few hours, as I recall.

I'm getting error messages when I download updates for lightroom and flash for the mac. can't figure out how to trouble shoot.

It sounds as if your browser and some of your apps are not color-managed.  This is pretty typical.  Even IE9 is only partially color-managed.
You can expect color-managed and non-color-managed applications to show you different things with the same images.  How different will depend upon how different your monitor color profile is from the image's color profile.
For web publication and most general use, experts usually advise saving images with the sRGB profile.  If such images, saved through the Save for Web & Devices function, look different to you than you expect, it may be that your input images have previously been saved in another color space.
You should really try to get your head around color-management by reading more on it.  It can seem baffling and it's difficult to understand without some background.  A quick web search turns up many overviews.  Beware, though, even people writing articles sometimes don't fully understand it.

  • Can't select CMYK text colour for text fields in Acrobat Pro forms?

I have designed a business card template in Indesign, and now want to use Acrobat Pro to add in text fields so that a client can edit the contact details on the cards in future.
I need to select a specific text colour for the fields, so that it matches the rest of the design. The cards will obviously need to be printed and the document has been set up in CMYK, but when I enter the CMYK colour breakdown in the Properties > Text Colour panel, it won't apply the colour to that field. The text either stays at the default black, or reverts to RGB - which isn't suitable for printing and doesn't match the colour I need.
Can anybody PLEASE shed some light on this? Other similar posts have either not been answered or people have suggested JavaScript..? I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with a JS code..? Surely there's an easier explanation?
    Thanks in advance.

This is for a text field that you create in Acrobat, whether the form is used offline or online. The script is a custom Format script, which you can place by bringing up the Properties dialog for the field, select the Format tab, set a format category of Custom, and you should see where you can enter the script. Change the string "Instructional text goes here" to the text you want to display when the field is blank.
