Lightroom defaulting to TIF files from DNG

How can I make LR3 not automatically create a TIF file when I open a DNG for the first time? I don't want this to happen. I've checked every preference I can find and can't find any settings to change this. When I try to do a batch run from CS4 on the DNG files, because LR3 creates a TIF files simultaneously, the batch next wants to run on the TIF file LR3 created in the same folder as the DNG files! Thanks for your help.

Upgrade to CS5 and the most recent version of Camera Raw...since you are using CS4, Lightroom can't pass the DNG to ACR for processing and must process it firts (and save it) before passing it to Photoshops. There's no way around this...

  • ? How do you change default for .pdf files from Reader 6 to reader 9

I cannot change the default for .pdf files from reader 6 to reader 9. Also I cannot remove reader 6. I am running Vista

Normally, completely removing old versions and reinstalling the latest version will reassociate all applicable extensions for the program, but it appears to have failed in your case.  There may be something else going on with your machine that is producing this behavior.  You probably need to investigate that.  But what you can do to make sure the defaults are correct is click on the start orb and select 'Default Programs.'  Then select 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program.'  From the list of file types, select each of the following in turn: acrobatsecuritysettings, fdf, pdf, pdfxml, pdx, xdp, and xfdf.  If its default program is not Adobe Reader, click on the Change Program button and select Acrobat Reader from the list (you may need to expand the lower section to display more programs than it initially provides).  If Adobe Reader does not show up in the list, you will have to browse for it.  It should be located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10\Reader\AcroRd32.exe or C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 10\Reader\AcroRd32.exe.
This method is safer than manually editing the Root\Classes in the registry.

  • Aperture does not recognise TIF files from Nikon CoolScan

The TIF files from my Coolscan are good in every other application, but Aperture does not recognise them. I've tried re-saving the TIFs as JPG and PDS but Aperture doesn't recognise any file generated from the TIF. Maybe it's something to do with the scanner driver? Any ideas how to load these files into Aperture?

You might check the color space that is assigned to the files. If you are using Nikon Scan software to manage your CoolScan, there is a preference for setting the color space of the saved file. FWIW, Nikon CoolScan .nef files are a 'raw' file, not camera raw, that was/is a Nikon proprietary format for their scans. If you use the Nikon Scan for image editing, the edits are non-destructive in saved files and can be adjusted by re-opening the file in NS. Adobe first made editing camera raw available in early 2003 and the Nikon format preceded that. Nikon's camera raw format also has the .nef extension, but is not the same as the CoolScan .nef-- really confusing. I suggested checking the color space, because Nikon has different internal names for Adobe RGB(1988) as well as their own Wide Gamut space.
All said, I've not had a problem opening .tif scan files in Aperture.

  • Olympus E-P1: Why DNG files from DNG-Converter, Lightroom or CameraRaw are invalid ?

    Hello from Spain:
    I've got a Olympus Pen E-P1.
I work with DNG Converter 5.5, Lightroom 2.5, CameraRaw 5.5, Photoshop CS4 with my *.ORF files with no problems, and I can convert ORF in DNG with those software smooth, but...
I can't open those DNG files with DNG Profile Editor. It display a error message "Could not open the selected image. Note that the selected image must be a valid DNG color image".
I'm trying to create a E-P1 DNG Profile using ColorChecker Passport. When I try to import a DNG file displays a similar error message "Can't open the file. Is a invalid DNG file".
What is occurring about DNG files from E-P1's ORF?.
    Thank you,
    Juanlu.

    Hi, Beat:
    Thanks for your offer.
Here you are a link to _B101110.ORF from my E-P1 for anyone who wants to try.

  • Lightroom and corrupted tif files.

    For some reason, now when I right click on tif file in windows I'm getting a pop up box that states;
    Explorer. Tif:corrupt file.
This applies to all tif files on all drives.
I first noticed this with imported to lightroom from raw pef files, processed and then exported from light room.
it also includes files opened from Pentax RAW files, processed with ACR and CS2 then saved as tiffs.
    any ideas?
    Simon.

No. I'm running XP and my files are Pentax PEF raw files and tiffs created from these.
Tiffs opened from a cd are fine - as are tiffs copied to my PC from cds. It's as if windows has decided that there is a problem with all tiffs on the machine.
double clicking them - they open fine in CS2.
If I right click to get the menu - then the error message clicks in.

  • I can't open most files from DNG Converter 5.5b (Olympus E-P1)

I have a bunch of E-P1 photos taken in RAW (.ORF files) and was waiting eagerly for support by ACR. I tried the DNG Converter 5.5b today and converted all my images to DNG.
When I tried to import the DNGs in iPhoto, it imported only 32 files out of 800.
These 32 images also have a proper icon (with the preview of the photo).
I can't open the others with either iPhoto, QuickLook or Preview.app
All DNGs were opened successfully with Photoshop CS4 or Lightroom once I updated ACR to 5.5b
It seems that, for some reason, Apple apps can't open this "new breed" of DNG files.
Does anybody have the same problem ?

David, I'm afraid you will probably have to follow up with Apple on this
one. (If I'm understanding your post correctly, you have no trouble using
Adobe software to process the E-P1 files.)
    Eric
Sorry, I updated my original post because I realized I wasn't making much
    sense !
The DNG Converter did convert all my files to .DNG
I can open all of them in Photoshop CS4 (or Lightroom).
But I can only open a few of them with Preview.app, iPhoto.app or QuickLook on
    Mac OSX.
I found out that the one I am not able to open are the photos taken with the
    kit lens (Olympus 14-42mm).
The ones I shot with my Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 ( + adapter) were imported
    successfully in iPhoto.

  • Lightroom not supporting Raw files from Nikon D5200

hi only new here ,has any one else found this problem ,just bought the Nikon D5200 and i always shot in RAW but have now found after my first shot with the new camera that Lightroom 4.3 wont support Raw Files from this camera

    Yes it does.
    See here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Scroll down to Nikom (it goes alphabetically by vamera makers), tne D5200 is listed as being supported in Lr 4.3.
What does Lr say? Do you get an error message?
Also, did you use an older version of Nikon Transfer or Niko n View? There is something in these older versions that makes the files not readable for Lr.
Update any Nikon software you might have.

  • ACR 4.4.1 does not open TIF file from bridge (CS3)

    Hi,
I have the preferences in CS3-Bridge and ACR set to open JPG & TIF files in ACR and not CS3 but when I click on a TIF file in bridge it opens in PS CS3 instead. These TIF files were generated by a GUI interface for ENFUSE which is an algorythm that combines bracketed RAW or JPG exposures for expanded dynamic range... it works very well ad outputs to TIF... but I can't seem to open these TIFs in ACR. Isn't a TIF a TIF?
Is there a way to force ACR to open these?

There are many varieties of TIF files (including b/w fax images).
I have no idea if this will work, but you could try opening one of the files in Photoshop, saving as a TIF from Photoshop, and then see if that new TIF file will open in ACR. At least it should let you know of opening of TIF/JPG files in Camera Raw is working correctly.

  • Default Open CR2 files from SD card or from LR5 in ACR/CS6

How/where do I set this up; I don't want the files to default open in PS.
    TIA
    OS 10.10.2, ACR 8,6, PS 13.0.6 x64, LR 5.7

I think there were on-point replies in the OP's duplicate thread in the Lr forum, Jim.
Download CR2 files from camera card into LR, open in LR as ACR?

  • Why won't Lightroom 3 read NEF files from my D90?

When I try to import photos (NEF files + jpg files) from my D90 to Lightroom 3 I get a mesage saying the files cannot be read. The same message appears when I try to import from a folder on a hard drive. I did not have this problem with lightroom 2.6. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Quote <Is there a setting LR or on the camera that I can use to allow LR to recognise (and render) the NEF file from the camera?>
No. LR will only show the thumbnail rendered by the camera,if it is possible. The better practice would be to download the files from the CF/SD card using a reliable card reader, this would be more efficient/faster and reliable. (use the camera to take photographs, rather than have it attached to the computer.)
A LR generated preview will only be rendered after the import of the NEF.

  • How to remove an embedded RAW file from DNG?

During my early phases of experimenting with Lightroom's support for DNG, I ticked the Embed RAW Image option in Preferences. Unfortunately, this meant that the resulting DNG was, compared with the original CRW, about 3 times the size. I've since ceased embedding RAW files into the DNG, so now the DNGs are roughly 10% smaller than the CRWs, which is quite a result.
My question is: for the DNGs where I embedded the RAW image, how can I remove that image and reclaim all that wasted space?

Use the convert to dng (yes, you can do this on dng files!) function and make sure to uncheck the embed original RAW option but keep the rest default (yes to lossless compression and make sure you have preserve RAW image instead of convert to linear set. You can do this directly in lightroom or using the dng converter app.

  • Lightroom 5 difficulties importing files from MC

    Hi Everybody,
saw some discussions already concerning this problem. Want to specify this issue nevertheless.
    PROBLEM:
When importing from memory card, Lightroom 5 previews turn up veeeery slowly. This is a known issue by Adobe, obviously being worked on. But even when I import from the folder tree (not directly from the mc folder at the top) the previews load quicker, but my importing issue remains.
The import takes very long, so generating the preview files. Sometimes Lr5 gets stucked completely and can't be shut down over the Win Task Manager. Theonly solution: shutting down the system the hard way, e.g. cutting off power and restart.
But even when I am patient and wait till everything is loaded, Lr5 remains slow afterwards on ALL functions, even in showing previews of older images.
Most of the time, Lr5 seems to corrupt the file library on the HD I am importing on. After shutting down the system (which takes an eternity also), Windows is 'reparing' the image HD after restart automatically.
Is this a known issue? Has it anything to do with the fact, that the images HD is NOT the OS-drive?
    Sys Info:
    OS:Win 8 Pro
    Mem Size: 24 GB
HD: WD 2 TB eSATA internal (brand new)
P.S. No dumb remarks about Win8. We all know 7 worked lots better and OSX anyway ....
