Lion Hangs requiring hard reset

Hi,
I've looked through the forum and not seen this specifically mentioned..
Is anyone else having issues with Lion whereby the whole system becomes unresponsive and has to be power cycled?  Since upgrading my Macbook pro and iMac this week and I've had to do it on both machines.
I've seen this caused by Safari (2 occasions) and Finder (2 occasions).  On 3 of the 4 times Force quit didn't work and on 1 occasion Force Quit wouldn't even load!
Since it's not a 'crash' I see no reports in Console and nothing explicit to report back to Apple - though I have submitted a feeback form on the subject.
Anyone else seeing similar issues?

    Good morning Bomgart!
I like to think being random is a great attribute. Sadly, not when it comes to a phone though. But fear not, because we've got a couple of solutions for one of our favorite couples.
Now, there's no doubt that random dying is an illness that does plague a small minority of devices. But, there's a possibility that it may be due to the equipment itself or potentially something that was installed. Based on your description of things, you're up to date in software. And hard resets are a fantastic route to take when experiencing these issues. But, we want to isolate the problem. What I'm going to recommend is doing another hard reset http://vz.to/Sq8I9x . Only this time, test it out before you load on your applications. Also, you may wish to remove those which may not be entirely reputable (battery savers, task killers, etc.). Please let me know how that goes and while we're on the topic, which device does your girlfriend have with us? I've got you covered.

  • Ipad 2 keeps requiring hard reset

    I am having a problem with the iPad 2 that requires me to do a hard reset to get the iPad to come back on. This has happened 3 to 4 times now and I've only had it roughly 3 weeks. Last night it was low on power (10%) and when I went to wake it up it wouldn't come on. I thought a process must have drained it so I put it on the dock and went to bed. I woke up this morning and it still would not wake up. I held the sleep and home button down for a few seconds and got the apple logo. When it came on it didn't charge although it's been charging on the dock all night. Anyone else seeing this happen with their iPad 2 on 4.3?

    Went back to the Apple store and this time the agent was able to do an normal diagnostics (which, by the way is pretty cool how they do it over the internet). The last agent that helped me couldn't run a proper diagnostics because 'the networ was down'. The diagnostics said I was running low on memory a lot and the agent looked at all the apps I had running in the background (lots!!) and showed me how to close them after no longer using them. But he also noticed that the time my iPad had saved for being used and sleeping were identical so he concluded it was a hardware issue and promptly exchanged the ipad! That was pretty awesome too. Overall I'm still very happy I bought an iPad

  • IPod requires hard reset after playing podcast with chapters

    I've noticed that I need to do a hard reset (hold down menu and select buttons for a few seconds) after my iPod goes idle after playing a podcast with chapters (the Ricky Gervais show).
    Anyone else have this problem?

    Can reproduce the problem on a 20GB 4G and 6GB mini
    with another podcast series with chapters
    (fortunately not many I listen to have caught up with
    chaptering).
    The odd behaviour I've noticed is that the Ricky
    Gervais podcast, for example, only has to be present
    on the iPod and never listened to for the iPod/s to
    lock up when they go to sleep. A hard reset then
    required to bring them back to life until the podcast
    has been listened to and the iPod/s then resync'ed
    with the mothership to then remove it (and restore
    some sanity until the next one).
    I did conduct a hard restart of my 10GB iPod with no success. The only workaround solution I've discovered is to use the "Convert Selection to AAC" under the Advance menu in iTunes while selecting the podcast. It converts the podcast to a new AAC file without chapters, and it plays fine on my second gen iPod. But now my library has 2 copies of each podcast, one for iTunes, one for iPod. Anyone else have any luck with the 10GB iPod? I guess it doesn't like the new podcasts with chapters.

  • Phone randomly dies requiring hard reset

    Does anyone else have this same issue.  My phone randomly dies and requires a hard reset.  It has happened to me twice in 10 days.  First time I thought that I had let my phones battery get to low but after putting it on the charger for an hour it would not power on using the button... had to hard reset.  Second time I am 96.3 % positive it had over 75% battery and it randomly died also requiring a hard reset.  I have an iphone5 32GB 6.1.3 version ios.  My girlfriend is having the same issue with her Droid so I know it is not just an iphone issue.  Verizon please respond.

  • Iphone 4regularly requires hard reset

    I have encountered an annoying issue with my iphone 4. Recently it needs regular hard resets (3 times in 4days). Plugging into the mains results in no response. Plugging into computer the iphone remains blank but itunes give an error of 1600. My only option is pressing sleep/wake and home button at the same time. It then returns to working normally. It has been getting rather annoying as I assume my phone is on, but it has turned itself off.
    The phone is running 4.2.1 and has not been tampered with
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Do you think if i go to my local apple store they would do anything about it?
    Do I have any other options.
    Any opinions would be welcomed

    Have you tried restoring the software, it is the first thing they will ask in the Apple Store.
    It can fix issues like this.

  • RAZR MAXX Required Hard Reset, Now Can't Access SD Card?

    Today, my GPS signal kept malfunctioning. This was unacceptable as I drive all over the place for work. I called Verizon support and they had me do a hard reset.
    After the hard reset, I set up my phone again and was unable to access the SD card. I entered my pin, and the following message showed up on my phone:
    SD Card Password Protection
    SD card has been secured by another device and cannot be accessed unless formatted.
    Tap "OK" and:
    SD Card Password Protection
    Failed to verify SD card security settings.  Encrypted content is not accessible.
    Tap "OK" and I'm taken back to the home screen.
    Is there any way to restore the SD card?  If not, how do you reformat the card to make it usable again? When I try to reformat it from the phone, the only option I have under "storage" is "Mount SD Card" which obviously does not work.
    Thank you.

        Hi DroidRAzrMaxx0111 - I appreciate you taking the steps to troubleshoot your original concerns and I apologize it had some unintended results! When going to Settings>Location & Security>Data Encryption, is "Storage" currently checked? Is "Encryption key type" greyed out? I look forward to working with you to restore the data!
    Thank you,

  • ICS required hard reset, now can't access 32GB SD card

    Saw message this morning that update 6.16.211.XT912 had been downloaded and was ready to install...said it would take 15 minutes...
    45 minutes later, the only thing I could get was emergency dialer.  Powered down, powered up same thing.
    Called tech support, tried powering on/off again and then told to hard reset.
    So after the hard reset, ICS is there and the phone is working....BUT I had encrypted my SD card (32GB) and now when I try to mount it get:
    SD Card Password Protection
    SD card has been secured by another device and cannot be accessed unless formatted.
    Click "OK" and see:
    SD Card Password Protection
    Failed to verify SD card security settings.  Encrypted content is not accessible.
    Click OK" and  back to settings screen!
    Is there anyway to tell the OS what the pin was/is?  If not, how do you reformat the card to make it usable again?  Does it need to be done off the Razr?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks to both poidude and b33 for the replies...but not seeing these options.  OS is 4.0.4 (ICS) and the phone is a Droid Razr...System Version that crashed the phone on install is 6.16.211.XT912.Verizon.en.US.
    When I Select "System Settings" from the Home screen (using the "hard button" on the lower left of the phone) I get a nice new ICS screen.  The first category is "Wireless and Networks", the second category is  "Device".  Under "Device" is "Storage".  Selecting "Storage" leads you to a screen with Major categories of  "Total Phone Storage",  "Application Storage",  "Internal Storage/MNT/SDCARD".
    Under this last category, there  is (after a storage utilization bar chart)  "Erase Internal Storage" , "Manage Internal Storage";
    If I select "Erase Internal Storage", I get  "This action will erase the internal storage on the phone.You will lose all the data on the internal storage";  There is a button "Format Internal Storage".  There is no option to separately format the SD card.
    What may be more relevant is that when the phone boots up, it tries to read the SD card and then displays the "SD Card Password Protection"  messages in my original post.  So the OS is trying to mount the SD, but because it was encrypted (and from what I have read, the encryption key was stored in internal memory, which got wiped when the Verizon rep had me do a factory reset!  There is no way to ever recover this data.  Have looked at Motorola and Droid forums on this...it is really bad.  DO NOT USE ENCRYPTION.  If your phone dies, your data is gone forever)
    The thing is, I cannot use the next major category under system settings, which is "SD CARD/ MNT/ SDCARD-EXT" which has only one option, "Mount SD Card"...if I try to mount the card, I get the same "SD Card Password Protection"  messages again!
    Can anyone who has inserted an SD card into a Droid Razr running 4.0.4. tell me if a brand new SD card is auto formatted?  Do you have to "mount" it first?  The current Verzion "help" shots are not for 4.0.4....ugh

  • ACE module hung and required hard reset !!Plz help

    ACE module had bit flip and it was hunged after that.I was not able to run any command(i.e For ex if i run show ft status nothing was displayed).I was not able to run any command on the standby ACE as well is this could be both the ACE module ACTIVE?
    Manuaaly reboot from the ACE did not work. I had to forced hardare reset from cat 6500.
    Is this a bug or strange behaviour?
    I am running ACE A2(2.3) version on the module.
    Thanks
    ALEX

    Usually in the case of the bit flip the ace will reset itself, which clears the problem.  In order to understand what is happining to your ACE, you would have to open a TAC case, and provide show tech information, as well as any files that were generated in the "core:" directory.  You can view these using the command "dir core:"
    It seems odd that the standby ACE also wouldn't respond to any command input.  Did you have to reset it as well? If you had to reset it as well, then it may have encountered the same conditions that caused the hang on the primary.
    Was there any syslog messages generated on the 6500 switch during the time?

  • Hangs requiring hard reboot

    Greetings all,
    Where would I start troubleshooting this issue? My macbook will hang periodically, and I have to turn it off to get it back responding.
    Things that happen when it does this
    1) Mail will start to check, but never actually checks.
    2) I can bring up spotlight, and start launching an app - it will appear in the dock, bouncing. It will eventually stop bouncing, but it never opens - the blue dot never appears.
    3) In Force quit, I can end tasks, but if I try to relaunch finder, it vanishes from the list, but never restarts.
    4) If I have terminal open, and I attempt to launch Top (or another command) it doesn't start. I just get a blinking cursor, and no command prompt.
    5) I'll get the spinning beachball of death in the individual apps, but not overall.
    6) I can attempt to restart, and it brings up the window with choices, but none of the buttons are selectable (though one appears to be, it isn't).
    I've been removing all the weird little autostart stuff.
    All of this started after I did a clean install of Snow Leopard. It is particularly prone to happening when the machine comes out of sleep mode.

    I had the same setup with the apple BT keyboard and the V270 mouse. I also work with the lid closed and with an external monitor (I bet that you are also using airport)! Both devices seem to intermittently loose connection, and the mouse cursor doesn't track very well. Looking through postings it seems that airport interferes with BT, and the behavior I've seen seems to support this. I stopped using the mouse because I couldn't get it to work adequately. I'v also tried using BT headphones (Motorola HT820) which at best the sound drops out intermittently, and at worse crashes OS X. I'm thinking that BT on the Macbook Pro just marginally works... I'd be curious if you ever had any success with your setup!

  • HTC Incredible reboot fix that works and does NOT require hard reset

    Like many of you unfortunate souls out there I have had my HTC Incredible go into a rebooting loop over the last month or so. The following recounts some observations and and a solution which appears to work.
    First off, my son and I both have the same phone and software versions and apps. He does NOT get email on his phone because he does not want to. I do. His phone has NEVER rebooted. Mine has done so numerous times. My business partner also has the identical phone and software version, lives within 200 yards of me,  and uses the email and has had numerous reboots and has gotten them even sooner than I saw them at first. My partner and I have set up email attachments and downloads to go to the SD card. So much for background info. Here is what I did to fix the problem followed by some other observations:
    Open up the case of the phone and remove the battery
    Remove the SD card from the phone.
    Put it into an adapter that allows you to access files directly on your computer. In my case this was a Windows PC running Windows 7.
    Mount the SD card in your computer and open up the browser to see the files on the SD card.
    Look for a folder called ".Mail"
    If your phone is like mine you will see hundreds of files, some of zero length. This was even though I had deleted most of the emails I received on my phone.
    Proceed to directly delete any of the zero length files. For that matter, you may have other files like jpg's laying around of uncertain origin. I got rid of these and other strange files that seemed attached to no documents at all.
    Remove the SD card and reinsert into your phone. Put the battery back in and the cover on then restart the phone. Your phone should run properly and you should not see any negative consequences from the files you deleted previously.
    Some other observations relevant to this solution that bolsters my theory that this problem has something to do with the email application and also a problem with file system corruption on the SD card as a consequence of it.
    I had previously seen the email application put some mail from a different account I was using into my main account. The files could not be deleted and even trying to do so would cause the mail app to force close.
    My son has never seen the problem despite being in the same environment with the same phone and software. Relevant difference to me was that he was NOT using email and I was.
    The email app clearly has bugs if it is leaving behind hundreds of files even if you delete the emails. Why? As a software engineer my first instinct would be to look to see if the file system locks were properly synchronized when the email app is writing to the flash file system. I am not conversant in Android OS programming nor the app code itself so this is speculative on my part. I would also look for a timeout on reboots if file system enumerations take too long. Lots of files on a system might trigger a premature timeout and reboot. Once again, this is speculative on my part but I sure wish I had the code to debug this myself.
    These issues seem to coincide with a rapid rise in network traffic most likely because of the iPad 2/iPhone support by Verizon. I wonder if this additional traffic load on the network is opening up timing holes in the software because of backoff and retry intervals for certain apps. Once again I suspect the email app especially because it is vulnerable to network traffic issues as it tries to get email account updates.
    I could be wrong about my theory as to why the problem is happening. My solution seems to work. As far as pulling the battery and putting it near your AC in the car, that did NOT work for me at all. Leaving the phone out of its protective case also had no effect. Only screwing with the files on the SD card mattered.
    I hope this helps.

    This problem has been seen for MONTHS now by people besides myself. My business partner is about to put a bullet in his phone because this has been happening for far longer than mine. I have little confidence in a fix anytime soon because this problem has been persistent for some time and there is a lot of denial in the field by Verizon. Verizon has to depend on HTC and Google besides themselves for fixes. How much would you like to wager on how this business relationship is working out? The first step in any solution is for a company to take some responsibility for it and so far no company has.

  • I have had FF 6.0.2 crash my PC (blackscreen, pc is frozen and unresponsive, requires hard reset) several times in the last two weeks. Ironically, it did this very thing while I was registering in order to ask about this.

    I also have had FF close and reopen with the little pop-up about restoring or starting a new session.
    I have been using FF since v1, and never have I experienced this issue.
    I do not know what other information to provide, but if anyone is willing to help, I will provide any necessary details.

    Having disabled hardware acceleration (Tools>Options>Advanced>Browsing), I have not had a crash although it has only been two days.
    Hopefully this fixes it and it will work for the others who are having the problem.

  • 10.7.2 Lion freezing / apps lock up, must hard reset 2-3 times daily

    I've seen several posts on this -- oddly, some of them are archived even though there has been no resolution...
    Would love to hear people's experiences and especially if you have a fix. Would REALLY love it if Apple would get off their duff and give us a working O/S.
    Ever since upgrading to Leopard I've been having problems with system stability and, specifically, with lockups. Usually this starts out with a few applications get "hung" (beach ball). Again, usually, I can force quit them, restart and continue for at least a little while... but, it always marks the beginning of a downward spiral. The final straw seems to be when Finder locks up. Once Finder locks, the system becomes unresponsive overall and I can't shut down without doing a hard reset (either cmd-opt-power or, more often, just hold power until a get a hard reboot).
    Some of the behaviors I'm seeing:
    Apps start to lockup. Best option at this point is to quickly shut everything down and restart. On occasion I get a software restart if I'm prompt about it.
    Finder locks up... forget it. Hardware restart is in my future... will generally try to save work, but it seems that anything involving disk / file system access is completely frozen.
    About one out of two times, the login screen is very slow to appear (about a 2 minute boot), and then it fails to respond to my wireless keyboard &/or mouse. Sometimes the mouse works, keyboard doesn't. If I wait for 1-2 minutes, it will usually "wake up" and suddenly gets all of the input in one blast... but usually I lose patience, open up the laptop, do another hard reset.
    Sometimes the screen saver won't release control of the machine (much like login screen). I can move the mouse, tap keys, etc., screen saver just keeps right on running blithely along...
    On rare occasion, even the force quit panel (cmd-opt-escape) refuses to appear.
    Of late, I've taken to launching Terminal on login so that it's available (because after the lockups start, I won't be able to launch it). Then, I can issue a "shutdown -r now" which, most of the time, seems to work pretty well. I hate doing a hard reset, always worried it will lead to a damaged file structure or lost work.
    I've tried a number of fixed, including (at the height of it) reinstalling 10.7.2, which I did a few days ago. It made no difference at all... Also tried resetting NVRAM, etc. About the only folklore I haven't tried yet is switching to Chrome or Firefox. A lot of people are blaming Safari for all of this, so perhaps I'll try that next...
    I'm suspecting that Time Machine is making the situation worse, but turning it off (and disconnecting the drive) does NOT solve the problem. It seems to go a little longer in-between system lockups. Same symptoms... apps become unresponsive, one after the other starts to beach ball, eventually the whole system locks up... I'm wondering if it has something to do with disk access, as posted in other threads. I've been trying to minimize disk access wherever possible, for one, just plugging in my Time Machine drive about once a day, let it backup, then unplug. Not really sure if it's helping or not though.
    Currently, I'm running into this on average 3 times daily (worst day was 6 times, best day was just once, yay...) Yes I've been keeping track. By my count I'm also losing up to two hours a day, because the shutdown / reboot process is so baby-sitting intensive (and I have to do it several times a day).
    Very, very frustrating. This is definitely the worst O/S release Apple has ever put out there. I'd like to go back to Leopard, but worried about the downgrade... arrrgggh. (Wish Mr. Jobs was still around, somehow I think he would never have tolerated this...)

    Hm... what are the specific issues?
    I launch iPhoto, use it a few times, and it hangs, requiring a restart of the iMac;
    iPhoto complains that I am not connected to the Internet (when trying to display GPS data) when I am fully connected
    Magic Mouse's connection drops about every 15 to 40 minutes of typing, often in this Discussion. Apple Care suggested that keeping my battery charge above 50% would solve it. It didn’t.(My batteries are Apple’s, as is the charger.);
    When I return my hand to the Magic Mouse, the active window often suddenly scrolls up which looses the position of the pointer. This can cause problems in graphical apps like InDesign;
    Mail's boxes display a small triangle every few days and will not send or receive, requiring Mail to be re-launched;
    In Mail I cannot get pictures of people to appear in messages sent by them.
    In Mail, stationery does not work properly. Neither of these two is an earth-shattering fault, but having been offered them I wasted a lot of time trying to get them to work.)
    Time Machine three times over the last 1 1/2 years (OS 10.5 once and Lion twice) has complained that its HD is full when it is only ~1/2 full. A full reset on the last two did not cure it (I had not discovered Pondini's Full Reset until Lion). Pondini's symptom's and solutions did not match the error. Each time I had to erase and start again;
    A couple of months ago, as a test, (after confirming my daily bootable backup of my system done by Carbon CopyCloner), I re-installed Lion from the InstallED.dmg, accepted the invitation to restore from TM, and upgraded to 7.2. All looked well except Mail displayed only the Header and first two lines of the body of messages, all the rest of the bodies were blank. Another major thing did not work after this re-installation (I can't remember the details now);
    Carbon Copy Cloner can fail to find its Firewire backup HD about every 10th time (I have a daily schedule). The connections to the drive are plugged in OK but the drive is no longer mounted, whether the iMac has been restarted or woken up. CCC has been absolutely rock solid for years until Lion;
    My Canon scanner (current driver, and it always worked before Lion), more times than not complains that it cannot start because it is in use elsewhere. I have to unplug its USB and re-connect.
    In SystemPrefs > iCloud, a dialogue box said that Sys. Prefs. wants to use confidential info in my keychain. I press “Deny” and the box returns for ever until I force quit Sys. Prefs.
    Software Update repeatedly tells me that a certain update is available but I already have installed it.
    For those silly enough to install a new OS within a year of its introduction (not me: my iMac came with the wretched thing in it), some bugs can be expected, but not this many (at least in my opinion). All previous updates going back to 1997 have gone much more smoothly than Lion on my machines.
    Although I am in a minority (given the huge number of sales of Lion – although MacWorld reports that sales of Lion are faltering), I am sorry to say that I have fallen out of love with Apple. I would gladly trade the elegance and the fancy features for a bit of “Works out of the box”, “It  just works”, “Computing for the rest of us”.

  • Mountain Lion locks up after sleep, mouse is frozen on screen, requires hard reboot with power button

    I have a 2007 Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz macbook pro with Intel 320 160gb SSD installed, and 6GB of Patriot RAM. Machine was working perfectly under Snow Leopard, NO ISSUES AT ALL FOR MONTHS!
    After installing Mountain Lion the computer frequently locks up, requiring a hard reset holding down the power button.
    The lock ups occur about 10-90 seconds after waking the computer from sleep. Everything will appear normal, i can click through some appliations, start typing somewhere, reading an article, or start watch the ipad mini launch video on apple.com, doesn't matter. Then all of a sudden the computer is just completely locked up. Nothing on screen is working, the mouse isn't even moving the system is completely locked up, and does not recover even if left for several hours. I have checked the logs and there's no sign of a kernel panic.
    I have tried creating a new blank user profile, reinstalling from the recovery partition, and the issue persists. I've basically stopped closing my computer when i can avoid it, and the rest of the time i have about a %50 chance that i'll be able to work when i open my computer instead of having to do a hard reset.

    With the 2007 macbookpro the optical bay was IDE. One of the upgrades i had made was an IDE to SATA adapter that held another sata hard drive in place of the optical drive(which had died). Even though this setup worked flawlessly under snow leopard, the IDE to SATA adapter seemed to be causing some issues with moutain lion when resuming from sleep. After removing the adapter and second hard drive, i have not had the computer lock up on me since.
