Lion server users on that Mac or the network?

This question is so 101 I'm almost afraid to ask it: when you create users in the Lion server software, are these users for that specfic Mac (just like any Mac user) or are they user on the network who will share the server services?
I can't get past this fundamental set up. I only want one user to admin the server software, but I have 5 users of other macs in our office who I want to be able to use the server services, like email and wiki.
How do I set them up?

Look in the Server App, if the users there have a small blue globe on them then they are Network Users. If they don't have the globe then you aren't serving an Open Directory Master.
Follow the advice in the Next Steps panel in the lower part of the Server App.

I was getting the same behavior after Apple support had me delete some plist files to get Airplay going. I was also getting the following error:
the error occurred while processing a command of type 'writesettings' in the plug-in 'server vpn'
I went into ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Library/Preferences/ and deleted every plist contating the word server. I had to re-set up my server (meaning walk through some intial steps) but all of my settings were still there after that and everything started working again.
Just a thought, obviously try at your own risk but it worked for me.

Can I back up my iCloud data to only 1 user on my mac, & not the other users? I have 3 different users on 1 mac, & I don't want all of my icloud info & photos available to all users.

Each user account on a mac has their own logins for itunes store and for icloud accounts. Now, all three users can use the same icloud account in their mac account, but that is generally not recommended. They should each use a different icloud account. For example, user "me" on mac can set up an icloud account in System Preferences>icloud to, say, [email protected] and user "you", in their mac account can set up icloud using, say, [email protected] in their icloud setting.
I suspect you don't mean "backup my iCloud data to only 1 user on my mac" since you can't back up icloud to a mac (nor can your backup a mac to icloud). Do you really mean sync?

User exit that runs at the start of VF01

Hello ABAP gurus,
Forgive me if this question seems stupid but I'm very new to user exits. In fact this is my first time handling one. I need to find the user exit that runs at the start of VF01. In that user exit I need to put some authorization checks and if they're not met the user won't be allowed to continue to run VF01 (VF01 must exit).
When user runs billing (transaction code VF01), I need to insert an authorization object V_LIKP_VST. If they have access to that plant (VSTEL), then they can proceed to run the transaction. If not, they should be rejected or forced to exit VF01. So the trick here is find that user exit that runs at the start of VF01.

Alternatively, you can try with Routine: USEREXIT_FILL_VBRK_VBRP in include: RV60AFZC to add the authorization check.

Can I use Lion server to set-up a WPA2 wireless network in place of an AEBS?

I'm contemplating replacing my Airport Extreme Base Station with my Core i5 Mac mini as the wireless network server, because this will get rid of a "box" (that I can sell!) and reduce power consumption, since my iMac is on all the time as my iTunes media source anyway. At present my AEBS creates a WPA2 LAN network connected in bridge mode to my Billion modem/router, so DHCP serving is performed by the Billion router. I could replace the AEBS with the Mac mini running Lion simply by using internet sharing, but this has low security (WEP) and I understand there are often connection problems when clients awake from sleep. (Furthermore, my Airport Extreme at the back of the house probably wouldn't connect to that WEP network?)
So, I wonder.... If I upgraded to Lion Server (only $49), can I set-up the Mac mini as the WPA2 network host in place of the AEBS? My mini is right next to the AEBS anyway, so it's in a suitable position to distribute the radio signal. As I understand it, the Lion Server software would need to allow the Mac mini to connect to the Billion router via ethernet in bridge mode - just like the AEBs, but I can't find any info that tells me whether this is possible.
Does anyone know if what I want to do is possible? A simple solution may be to turn off the DHCP server functions of my Billion router, letting Lion Server become the DHCP server, but I don't think that's possible. I also don't want to replace the Billion with a simple modem because my Billion router provides VoIP for my home phone (and has done so reliably since 2005).
Of course, if it's all too hard, I'll leave things as they are, because I don't have any need for the other Server functions of Lion Server.

How do I share a folder on mac mini with other macs in the network?

Howdy all!
The scenario I have in mind is that I have one folder in our Mac Mini (used as Home Theater) with all the family's music files on it. The rest of the family would be able to access the folder and copy the music they prefer onto their own computers (iMacs and Macbooks). The other computers would have read only access, they would not be able to alter the contents of the original file (to prevent accidental deletion). Only the user of the Mini Home Theater could alter the contents of said file.
I have tried pulling up the "Get Info" window and clicking the "Shared Folder" and "Locked" boxes, but all this seems to do is make the user of the Mac Mini unable to alter the contents of the folder. All the other macs on the network can access and alter the folder contents no problem.
What am I missing?

This isn't quite what I was looking for. I don't want to share the folder with users on the same computer--I want to share the folder with users on other computers.
Unless there is some way to identify users on other computers. How can I do that?

I need to set the time and date for all of our Macs in the network, I have tried to have a look at Workgroup manager but I can not see anything.

Once the ntp setting is initially loaded, it should not need to be changed. But you know that, of course.
If you're looking to automate ntp configuration as part of system imaging (SIU, InstaDMG, etc) and client set-up, then that's certainly possible; that sort of discussion is regular fodder on the Mac Enterprise mailing list. I tried connect to DB via Oracle SQL Developer and SQL Plus and both run without problem, but when I insert the same parameters into application OpenText Content Server 10, then I see this Error:

Can't see the other Mac on the network

I have a iMac G5 and a MacBook Pro connected via wirelss at home. Sometimes I can't see the other Mac in the Network folder, however I can connect to the other Mac (even I can't see them in the network folder) by afp the IP address via Safari... I have enabled the "personal file sharing" option in both of the machine.

I've had the same problems numerous times myself: the other Macs don't show in the network folder. Why? I'm not too sure myself, I've been given several possible explanations by the geniouses in San Francisco. However, the best trick to connect is via the Finder 'Go to' menu. The very last item should say something like "Connect to server..." -which is the same as the 'Command-K' combination of keys. That'll bring up a list of the last few servers on the network, and al you have to do is choose the one you want, and voilà!

I am 60+ years old and very new to Spiceworks.com and also very new to networking and devices on my small home network I have about 20 devices that share the network and I have managed over time to see what is on my network.
Now I just have to find a way to find out which device is hogging the bandwidth I will be back lol

Macs on the network say they "print" but nothing is actually printed

I have a Canon MF4350 connected via USB. It works as a local printer. Other Macs on the network can see it as a shared printer, and when you print it looks like printing work. But nothing is printed.
Canon cannot help, Apple cannot help.
Downloading the latest drivers from Canon just make the printer not work at all.
Tried everything I can think of and done a few things people recommend here - nothing works.

A previous postee who had the same issue and need to connect to the shared printer found that if the Mac that was connecting to the share did not have the UFRII driver installed locally, he was able to connect and print. The driver will be located in HD > Library > Printers > Canon > UFR2. Delete this UFR2 folder and contents and empty the Trash. Then also trash the UFRII Backgrounder plist file, located in HD > Library > Launch Agents and is called jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist, and then restart the Mac. Now if you try connecting to the share, are you able to print?

Can not connect to other macs on the network.

I am having an issue with a G5 Tower running 10.5.8 failing to connect to other macs on the network. I try to connect to our xserver and any other mac I get an error message that reads ‘EMSG_CONNECTION_FAILED’.

Turns out the 'node' on the hub had failed completely, ethernet cable was OK.

G4 freezes while connecting to another Mac over the network

This is a mirror-drive, Dual 1GHz PowerPC G4, 1.25 GB RAM. It was recently repurposed as a hand-me-down when we upgraded. We cleaned it up and reinstalled everything. It connects to the internet just fine. Other computers can find it on the network and connect to it just fine. When I try to connect from this G4 to any other Mac on the network, I can find the other computers and I get the login popup, but when I put in the password and click OK, I get the color-wheel that never goes away. I have to power it off and try again.
This computer has been a work-horse for several years and has been on our network with no problems. This has just popped up since we moved it to a different desk.
One side note, we did upgrade our network recently, but none of the other Macs (including 2 other G4's) are having this problem.

What version of the Mac OS is the MDD running?

If that involved unplugging the computer from the wall, then a dead or weak PRAM battery may have let the computer lose something that it needs for the task. How old is the battery and how much time has the G4 spent off wall power in the last few years? If your firm requires unplugging computers at night (some do now in an effort to be more "green"), then the battery is surely dead by now.

How can I set-up my mac mini server to be a central file server for my windows boxes (they don't see the mac on the network), and how do I set-up a central iTunes server so that all my devices sync to the mac mini?

I am looking for step by step instructions to configure my mac mini server to support the following:
1. Central itunes server for all my devices (ipad, ipod, iphone, etc.)
2. Central file server so that my windows devices can save and retrieve data from the central system (the mac does not show up in the network for the windows systems - all running windows XP or 7)

You will need to enable file sharing in System Preferences
as well as setting up sharing and permissions for the
directories that you want shared. You may also want to
setup a non-administrative user or allow limited guest
access. The user would require entering a user name and
password to make the connection, but would allow remotes
to change files, if set up tat way.
As for serving iTunes media, better to post in the iTunes forum.

Will Mountain Lion Server be slower that Lion Server on my 2009 Mac Mini?

I have a 2009 Mac Mini running Lion Server. Specs are: 2.0 GHz 8 GB ram.
As always, I'm wanting to reap the benefits of the latest OS without upgrading my hardware. I know mirroring won't be supported, but who cares about that on a server.
Does anybody have Mountain Lion on a similar setup?

We've found Mountain Lion Server to run just as fast as Lion. MLS boots a bit slower on our Mac minis, but it's
neglegable.
Also have had trouble migrating from Lion and 10.6.8 server to Mountain Lion Server. Issues with Open Directory and Mail.
Hope Apple puts out a .1 release to address the issues soon.
