I think any DVD burner will do. I went looking for a "compatible" one, and I found LaCie has some with Mac support, but it only means it comes with some Mac software.
I borrowed a friend's Plextor burner (a few years old) - he has a Windows system, and I just plugged it in and iDVD didn't complain. I didn't realise it takes ages to render the DVD, so I didn't get a chance to burn anything yet, but iDVD went through the motions of checking the DVD (I used one that had something on it) and asked if I wanted to erase what was there. All went well.
Definitely try to borrow one if you can. Once I get some results I'll share them.

RAW Camera Support

On an otherwise big news day for Aperture users, Apple has let down the Leica community once again by not including RAW camera support for the M9 rangefinder. Leica provided M9s to Apple back in September, and Apple should have had more than enough time to include RAW support for the M9 in Aperture 3. Many pro photographers and Leica owners are mac owners, and expect more of Apple. Come on Apple, please deliver the goods.

Aperture 2.0 does read M9 DNG / RAW files, but it does not support the M9 with a camera specific RAW profile. Instead, it applies the RAW profiles Apple created for Leica's M8 and M 8.2. The results are OK, but with the M9's full frame sensor, they fall far short of what would be achieved with an M9 specific RAW profile that reads the M9's internal configuration data. Apple has had M9s from Leica since September, when the M9 was introduced. The expectation of M9 and mac owners has been that by now, Apple would have developed a specific RAW profile for and supported the M9. Without such support, many M9 owners have been taking a pass on Aperture, and Aperture 1.0 and 2.0 owners will surely not upgrade to Aperture 3 without an M9 profile.

Sorry, but it's not going to happen. You can download the free Adobe DNG converter and convert your raw files to DNG files that your version of ACR can read, but the fz200 requires ACR 7.2 and only PSE 11 can use any version of ACR 7.

Raw Camera Support for OS 10.3.9

Hi There,
I have an eMac running on OS 10.3.9 (Panther) which I am unable to upgrade either with Adobe Plug-ins or Apple software fixes to support RAW camera formats.
It would be great if someone could let me know the following:
A) If there is a quick fix that will enable me to view my RAW format software with the current set-up.
The camera and supporting software is a SONY A200.
B) If the only way around this is to upgrade the system software to Tiger or later and if so where can I buy the upgrade. The apple site doesn't seem to package the programmes only upgrades!

Hello all,
I have Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger and have iPhoto '08. It supports RAW, and therfore Tiger will support RAW. Now I have read up and see you have a Sony A200? Well see if the A200 is compatible with iPhoto '08 and we can go from there. Also, iPhoto should be compatible since it works with almost all cameras ( I have yet to hear about it not workin with any cameras yet) so I'm assuming it will work. But I cannot guarantee that.

You have given me a basic understanding of the relationship of RAW image to the sensor and its intricacies.
I am still frustrated, bacause buying a camera for me involves a lot of research and I feel I let the reviews convince me to purchase the D600. Now I realise, none of the reviewers talked about how they looked at the pictures. What software they used is not in the limelight. When I buy something, I would like to use it without feeling uncertain that the camera will ever come to life and the picture it takes will be what I should be seeing.
The word RAW is a fairly generic term for me. NEF, on the other hand is like a number which is equivalent to the same number. I.e. 2=2 NEF=NEF. My conclusion is attributable to my scientific background. I am wrong.
Buying a camera whose product must be first converted to be used by a multitude of software is unfair to me. Release of the structure of the sensor makes the software industry able to adjust the missing link. Well, this suggestion makes me think. At this moment I am not sure I accept it. I want to be able to use the camera the next day I buy it and I don't feel like waiting for an unspecified length of time before it turns out, I am faced with yet another purchase. Purchase of CS6, because it will have an update that will process my pictures.
I wish to build up enough knowledge on the features of DNG which is the best candidate at this time. I found many uncertainties about the DNG structure and content. I want to make sure it is the real image I should be seeing.

RAW Camera support for Canon EOS 500D?

I just bought the Canon EOS 500D and now Aperture returns an "unsupported image format" when I shoot in RAW. I have the latest RAWCameraUpdate.pkg with version 2.5.
Still nothing.
Help!?

What you can do for now is use Aperture to organize and collect your images while you wait for a RAW update. In the interim, if you need to get images out for printing, email, web, etc. export the master and use the very underrated DPP (Digital Photo Professional) that came with your camera. It does a very good job with RAW conversion of Canon files and actually gives you some advantages over Aperture and ACR/Ligthroom in that it will let you apply your camera technologies that you lose when you shoot RAW over JPEG.
It's rather limited in what it can do in comparison to Aperture or Lightroom, but for simply getting excellent images from your RAW files, with basic edits like cropping, sharpening, and exposure it's very good.

Third-party plug-in for camera support?

Hi. My Sony F707 is not on the list of digital cameras supported by OS X ... I'm on a brand-new MacBookPro, and I also have a PowerBook G4. The G4 used to work with the Sony, but I upgraded to Tiger a few months ago, and I guess I hadn't tried it since then ...
I don't have a card reader that will read the old skool "memory stick" format, and I'm hoping there's some kind of driver or software from a third party that will allow me to drop the images onto the desktop, if not import them into iPhoto.
Any advice is appreciated.

USB connect (normal, PTP) - put it in PTP mode for Mac OS X only.
Use the "System Profiler" (under the Apple menu) to make sure your camera is recognized. Then use Image Capture (Applications folder) to get the files off your camera.

RAW support? Cameras supported list?

I've gotten my first Mac after 25 years of PCs (27" iMac with yellow tinged display, oh well)
I THINK this is going to be better (eventually, even the display I hope) but I cannot figure out how to do ANYthing right now.
Just tried to download my first pictures into iPhoto.
Got message to the effect of "No can do, Unrecognizable File Type" or something.
They were raw files, .orf (Olympus Raw File) files out of an Olympus E20 camera.
Does iPhoto not support raw as I thought?
Not support Olympus .orf files?
Not support this particular camera?
I can't find a list of cameras supported anywhere?
(this changeover of platforms is very taxing to me)
Any knowledge about what I'm trying to do would be much appreciated.

The E20 isn't on it.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback for feature requests.
iPhoto supports the same Raw formats as Aperture. The usual workaround for unsupported cameras is to convert them to DNG with Adobe's free Raw Converter.
Having seen a few people switch over can I suggest that the best thing you can do with iPhoto is get 100 pics into it and explore it rather than migrating your whole collection over at one go.

Camera RAW image support for Pentax K100D

Firstly, let me just say I have a MacBook Pro which came preloaded with Tiger. A month or so ago I upgraded to Leopard and I have applied all the available Apple software update.
I recently got a Pentax K100D digital SLR camera capable of taking images in RAW format (the pentax saves these with a .PEF file extension) and I have been trying to view these images in Leopard. I read the article below, which says that Leopard provides system-level support for the Pentax K100D camera RAW format.

Now, my problem is that I cannot seem to be able to open the .PEF files with neither Quick Look, Preview, iPhoto or Aperture. Basically, none of these programs seem to be able to display my .PEF files. Aperture says 'unsupported image format'.
I have installed the software that came with my Pentax (i.e. Pentax Photo Browser and Pentax Photo Laboratory) and these applications can display the .PEF images just fine. For what it's worth, I installed this software before I upgraded to Leopard.
If I right-click on a .PEF file in Finder, the only programs listed in the Open context menu are the above two Pentax applications.
So, what am I missing? Clearly something seems to be screwy in my Leopard set up. Is there some way to 'repair' the RAW image support in Leopard??
I would appreciate any help in fixing this as I would really like to start working with RAW images in Aperture and iPhoto.
Finally, just be aware that I am not an experienced Mac user. I have always used Windows until now and so... if you have a fix for this I would really appreciate a slightly more elaborate response.

I have done a little more research on this...
As it turns out, my camera is a Pentax K100D Super - not a K100D. The K100D Super is not listed as one of the supported camera RAW formats in the aforementioned article. So I guess this means that my camera is as yet unsupported. Sigh...

Download of latest Camera Raw to support Panasonic Lumix GX7 raw files

I have downloaded the latest Camera Raw version for my Photoshop CS 5.1 as I have bought a new camera, Panasonic Lumix GX7. Camera Raw still does not read these files in spite of the fact that the camera list shows that this camera is supported. Please help.

According to Adobe’s list, you need at least ACR 8.2 to process GX7 raw files:

Thank you for responding. So I essentially will never be able to use that button in lightroom 5? do I need to get LR 6? Will there ever be an update for LR 5 that will enable me to use it?
Does DNG Converter work within LR or do I have to upload pictures to my computer and then make a second copy in DNG format. and then go into LR and use them?

How do I get Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) support for my new Canon EOS 7D mkii.

I purchased the new Canon EOS 7D mkii in early November. I tried opening the raw files in both the latest Creative Cloud versions of Photoshop and Lightroom. I found that Adobe Camera Raw, both the current versions and ACR 8.7 beta/release candidate, did not support this camera. I know one exists because dpreview reviewed the pre-relase version of this camera in mid-October showing images processed with an unreleased version of ACR?
How do I get this early unreleased version of ACR for this camera?

Canon Eos 7D Mark ii was launched after we released ACR 8.7 RC. So, that’s the reason it is not included in the RC version. However, it is on our radar and hoping to add it in an upcoming update itself.

looking for Sony A7 raw files support for i-photo.

1. Well that's not actually true. There is frequently a lag between the release of the camera and Adobe offering Raw support. They are often faster to add it, true, but they do not "always" get converters out before the camera hits the market.
2. I'm not really sure just what this proves, of course. How often do you change cameras?

Olympus e-m5 mark ii raw file support in camera raw (pse 13).
I cannot open an .orf file from the em-5 mark ii even after installing latest updates for pse13 / camera raw.
Do I have to wait for support to be added by adobe / olympus, or can I do anything against myself.

You do have to wait, yes. The last updates to Adobe software came out in mid-December and the camera was not commercially available until some weeks or months after then. There is software from Olympus, and perhaps a few others companies that will work, but nothing that will do Adobe rendering, yet. You could use the Olympus software to create TIFs from your raw images and edit those in Photoshop Elements or just shoot RAW+JPG and edit the JPGs until there is an update from Adobe.
I would expect the next update to Adobe software to have support and it's been about 3 months since the last update so one would normally be out about now; however, I think Adobe is actually going to release an entire new version of Lightroom and the camera-raw plug-in with matching functionality, perhaps synchronized with a new version of PS, and if so there are many more things to get working properly before an update can be released. It's possible that updates were planned by this time, and there have been too many bugs to get ironed out and maybe Adobe would release at least a beta DNG Converter that understands the new cameras so people can do something while waiting for the main releases of the new software, but that is more my speculation than anything Adobe has said.
