Live Looping

Hope everyone is swell today! - It's a gray day in NY at the moment.
I have a Roland FC-300 foot controller sitting here and I am curious if there would be a way to hook logic/mainstage up to do live looping with it. I.e. I would like to set the station to record, stop recording, loop that, and put things over it in layers that would preferably be mutable at times.
Does anyone have any ideas?

If you have set a cycle region and press record, GB will always create new takes. You can't switch from recording to playback without hitting "stop".

Is it possible to record LIVE loops WITHOUT creating new takes?  I want to record bass for live shows, then loop the parts, but it keeps creating new takes and recording over in the looped area instead of playing back what i just recorded in. Any suggestions?

The features look excellent in this app. I believe my compiling issue was with wxgtk. Any audio guys out there willing to give this one a shot?

  • Best programme for constructing a non-live mix

Hello there, since im totally new to music production on the mac, please excuse my apparent naivety, however i was wondering if any of you guys knew which programme would be best to allow me to put together a "dj" mix on my shiny new MBP. I have previously used Acid pro on my pc and when putting my mix together i would consecutively insert full mp3 tracks in the timeline in the order i wanted my tracklist to play out, cut up small sections at the start and end, adding effects and inserting samples to improve the mix between tracks, and play around with the tempo of each track and effectively get them "beat matched" to create a proper "dj" mix over the space of a month or two, dipping in and out as i choose..
I know it might sound slightly patronising and simple in how i have explained it above, but i really need some advice on what would allow me to do exactly this on a mac before i go splashing out on Logic or Ableton. I need something which will allow me to lay down limitless numbers of mp3s (some of my mixes are up to 3 hours in length and would have around 60 or 70 tracks mixed together) and would also allow me to manipulate them and cut them up as and when i see fit. Im not interested in "live" looping as i often tweak my track lists and tinker around with the mix as i get new tracks in and so on....
can anybody recommend anything? Any advice or suggestions would be a godsend!!!
    cheers all

    hey cheers for that.
I guess it might sound more complicated than it is, it isnt really put together "live" or on the fly because the whole mix is laid out on the screen in front of me, as i go, inserting new tracks here and there, cutting bits up, deleting stuff out, and i can jump to any point i wish at any time and cut bits out, add effects etc so its totally limitless in how i work, no time restraints or beats or parameters to stick to. If you can imagine the typical DAW window with the time line running right to left, then the tracklist (at the left of the screen) runs top to bottom and as the mix plays out and the timeline works its way across from right to left, then the tracks/waveforms work their way diagonally down as time progresses and the tracks go from one to the next.
Ive been djing for 17 years now and when you listen to a set that youve mixed "live" on vinyl, often after youve finished there are mix elements or tracks that you wish you'd mixed better or used a different track, even when you use Serato etc, so putting a "non-live" mix together this way is kinda like finding the holy grail for me, where i can effectively write and tinker with the mix over time, i can play about with the tracklist, add tracks in weeks later, take tracks out, change how two records are mixed together, even mix 5 or 6 different tracks at the same time, and i can listen to it in work and see what bits i want to mess about with or keep and get the low down from my mates on how its sounding too... just another way of approaching it i guess, the thing is, it works incredibly well so im pretty staunch about sticking to it if i can.
I'll try get a few images together to maybe try explain it visually if i can..dont think im doing such a great job so far and fear i may sound slightly patronising in my simplified explanations..
    Cheers for the help

    Hi
Create the LoopBack channels at Set level. Create the individual sounds and Patches you want inside that set.

  • Audio Units Looper...need HELP

I'm trying to find a suitable solution for Live Looping.......
Anybody using the "AU Looper "downloadable from the developer page.
Its in the core audio sdk....I dont understand why its not in the stock collection.
Its a brilliant little plugin...great feature set...but I cant seem to get it to work properly.
It wont load int Logic xpress! gives an error message.
Loads into Ableton live 5.2 but acts funky.
And I cant even get AU LAb running...keeps crashing after the plugins load.
    ANYBODY????

    Bellissimo,
I haven't tried running SooperLooper inside Live, and I haven't dug very deeply into SL's architecture... but lack of knowledge never stopped me from trying to give advice
From my brief encounters, it appears that when SL runs as an AU, it really doesn't need the SL app at all. The SL app just functions as a GUI tool to control and configure things, so if you use MIDI to control SL, you can use the AU version without ever firing up the SL app. But I'm guessing that the AU component runs in conjunction with a SL "engine" of some sort, and that association gets made automatically.
When I run SL from Logic, all I have to do is insert the AU plug-in, select the SL app from inside that plug-in, and it just works. Whatever "engine" gets started, it happens automatically, as does the connection between the AU and the engine. Using MIDI control adds another layer of complexity, but if you just want to get SL working by pressing buttons on the GUI app, I don't think you need any kind of network (or MIDI) connectivity (all "networking" is taking place internally to your computer, so it has nothing to do with LAN or Internet or anything like that).
Maybe SL simply doesn't work with Live 5.2 ? I don't know. There's a SL mailing list that might help out:

  • Using Logic as a LoopStation?

Is there any way, by using some kind of MIDI control foot pedal, that Logic can be used as a loop station (a la BOSS RC-20 or new 50) in a live setting? I am considering the new Boss loop pedal but I've always wondered if I already had the capability built inside Logic to do it. I really love the idea of the new RC-50 that you can switch between verse/chorus/bridge parts by controlling different looped phrases with your feet. Is anyone familiar with any kind of live looping/recording/overdubbing capability in a laptop running Logic? Possible setup ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I'm also new, but I might be able to help. You can go to the media button in the top right, then go to the browser, and search the mp3's on your hard drive and pull them into Logic Pro 8. Just drag and drop. Once the mp3 that you want is in there you can cut it and loop it however you want. From there, you can add software instruments and such to add snare and bass, or whatever. Hope this helps.

  • Can Mainstage 2 drive Apple Keynote, or other video/slides?

    Greetings fellow Keynoticians...
I've used Keynote for years in concert, and am looking to upgrade to '09. I'm also a Logic 8 newbie, and am looking to upgrade to 9, mainly for Mainstage 2. I'm a one-man band. Years ago I used to have a full-blown MIDI show with a simple footswitch driving sequencers, keys, drum machines, and complicated lighting all via a very cool setlist feature in a program called MasterTrax Pro (rest it's soul...they went out of business years ago, as did the support for newer OS's). I'm looking to resurrect this idea again in concert, and I'd like to add video/slides, if possible...
I'm looking to use a footswitch (Apogee GiO or Roland FC-300) to control Mainstage 2 in concert to call up/launch: Playback audio, guitar patches, do live looping, drive keyboard MIDI instruments & fx, and lighting cues via MIDI. I'm really psyched about this. (Looks like this will all work via MIDI control changes with Mainstage, and one of the above pedal boards connected to my MacBook Pro via USB, right?).
Here's my dilemma and main question: Is there any way that Mainstage 2 can drive Keynote (slides/video/text) via MIDI control/patch changes, or via some other protocol? (i.e. Hit a footswitch button, and it jumps to a specific slide/sequence, based on a MIDI control change, or other protocol?) Or, is there any way to drive other multi-media programs (Quicktime, Powerpoint, Mediashout, etc.) via Mainstage? My goal is to hit one footswitch which will launch both the audio (Mainstage) and video/slide-show (Keynote or other program) via MIDI-mapping in Mainstage, ideally both playing on the same computer, or 2 Macs synced, if necessary.
Seems simple enough, since there are programmable hand-held remotes that control Keynote (forward/back one slide, pause, blackout, etc.), I'm just not sure what protocol they're using (I'm not a programmer). Makes sense there would be a way to map MIDI control data thru the Mac OS to control Keynote (forward/back one slide, or ideally, skip to a specific slide/sequence, like with a MIDI program change), I just can't find anything on the support sites for Keynote, Mainstage, Logic, or the GiO or FC-300, or anything else with Google. Anyone try this before? Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
    Shawn

Thanks, Brian, I appreciate it. I think you're on to something...I don't think I'll need to actually see Mainstage, or anything else other than Keynote, so it might all work.
    To Follow up...
A friend from the Mainstage forum pointed me to Alien Apparatus Show Control application and footswitch. (www.alienapparatus.com). Below is my dialogue with their tech support. I will post again after I've had a chance to try it with Keynote, and/or Mainstage. I think my biggest question now is if Show Controller and Keynote running will work w/Mainstage at the same time (I really want to use it for the guitar rig, I think). Does anyone know if Show Controller will work with Mainstage and Keynote? Could someone test it for me if you have them? I don't have Mainstage 2. Here's the tech support dialogue:
So...here's my questions... Can you tell me:
+1) Can you use Show Controller to control Keynote specifically? Have you done it? Can you program Show Control to trigger the "keystrokes" in Keynote? Are "keystrokes" the same as "hotkeys", or is the a Mac OSX command? Can you email me some documentation/links about this? If not Keynote, is there any other program you can recommend that will play photo slide shows, video, lyrics w/beautiful transitions, that will respond to keystrokes and/or MIDI program changes from Show Controller that I can call up specific scenes from your foot controller with?+
Yes, you can control Keynote with the Hotkeys feature. Just to make sure of this, I just called up Show Controller and Keynote and did it. Yep, it certainly can be done. In fact, you can download the demo of Solo Performer Show Controller from our web site and you can give it a go yourself. Hotkeys are really just keypresses that you can send to other programs. In this case I sent right arrow keypresses to advance the Keynote slides. In the Hotkey editor of Solo Performer Show Controller, there is a field where you type in the keys to send. In this case, I want to send a right-arrow key. This is a "special" key that does not show up when you type in the field, so what you do is type "<right>" into the field. These "special" key commands are documented in both the manual and the online help. If you ever get stuck, just fire an email to me and ask.
+2) Can you run Show Controller on the same computer as Keynote? The Keynote Help in Keynote '08 talks about "Using Other Applications During a Presentation": To use Exposé, Dashboard, or other applications (such as Remote Desktop) while you’re playing a slideshow, you need to set a Keynote preference. Choose Keynote > Preferences, click Slideshow, and select “Allow Exposé, Dashboard, and others to use screen.” Selecting this option may cause your slideshow to run more slowly and animations to display poorly." Have you done this?+
You sure can run Show Controller and Keynote on the same computer. I just did it. One thing that I should point out, though, is that Keynote tries to take over your entire screen. If you have a second screen or projector (as you have indicated that you do), then you should be fine. Otherwise, you will only see Keynote unless muck about with Keynote's preferences as you've pointed out. If you're displaying on a second monitor (or projector), then you don't need to worry about any of this.
+3) Can you run Show Controller to drive Mainstage 2 and/or Logic, to take advantage of all the live audio capabilities (i.e. Pedal Board, real-time fx, soft synths, etc.) Have you done it?+
I've never done it personally. Generally I just run all of my audio form Solo Performer Show Controller. But you very likely can accomplish what you want. Solo Performer Show Controller can send MIDI commands that most audio programs will respond to. You can send MIDI commands to the IAC bus. This is how you send MIDI to programs that are running on your computer; its an "internal" MIDI chain. You just set up the receiving program to watch for MIDI on the IAC bus.
+4) Can Mainstage 2 be used as a slave to Show Controller? Can you run them both on the same mac? Have you done it?+
I've never done this, but I see no reason why it can't be done. Solo Performer Show Controller can send either MIDI or hotkeys out that Mainstage should respond to.
+5) Can you run Show Controller and Mainstage 2 on the same machine, or do you need 2 macs?+
You should be able to do this with one Mac.

  • Controling diferent soft instruments at a time with one Keyboard?

    Hello guys!
i am trying to create a live looping rig in mainstage...
My idea is to have 3 loopers where i could loop Drums, Synths and guitar, all of theese coming from mainstage!
Só currently i am kind of stuck on this...
i want to have one drum sound, one bass synth sound, one electronic keyboard sound and one guitar sound per patch (wich will work like songs for me)
The problem is, when i play my keyboard (Novation 25SLmkII) all of the soft synths play at once...
What is the best solution to overcome this? Solo the track i want to use? assing diferent midi channels for everything?
    Thanks for your help

yes, changing patches is really the way to do it, but if you want to change instruments in 1 patch, then just do this one part:
    create 4 Instrument Channels
set each one to a different MIDI Channel (1-4 for example)
create 4 virtual keyboards each on a separate MIDI Ch (1-4 for example)
use your controller to switch between MIDI Channels (change channels on your controller to switch between playing the different Instrument Tracks in MS.)
the trick to multiple looping is if you DO change Patches, then you have to create your LoopBack AUX's at the Set level so that you can continue to hear them in each Patch or create alias's for them in the other Patches.  That's where this method may be less complicated.
the Concert, Set, Patch levels are JUST like Folders in the Finder.  Alias Track' are like alias files as well.  It might be less confusing to think of it like that.
as for my use of MS, I'm in transition for being a live guitarist and studio production guy to a live band-in-the-box guy.  i've been playing with a cross between DJ and live performance guy.  I have a GiO and a MINILAB and they are all bus powered so i just need a couple of battery amps and i can play little concerts under the bridges and in the stairwells.
i guess i'm trying to make it act like Abelton Live and push it to its limits in that direction as a beat/sound machine.  when i make enough $ to justify buying Logic i'll probably use MS to seed projects that i'll finish in Logic.

  • Roland OCTAPAD with GB

I am trying to use my Roland OCTAPAD with GB and I have some questions:
It is only letting me use the pad as a MIDI controller for the GB drum kids, not for any keyboards or other sounds. Is it possible to use the OCTAPAD for any other GB sounds?
The OCTAPAD comes with a good selection of internal kits, which are great for live looping. How can I record these sounds in GB? For instance, while creating a beat with the OCTAPAD, is it possible to record that beat live into GB? Or will GB only accept it as a MIDI controller for the GB kits?
Does Logic provide tools for MIDI controllers such as the OCTAPAD, as opposed to a keyboard controller? For example, I saw on the Logic page of apple.com that you can assign specific sounds to specific keys of a keyboard MIDI controller. Is this true for the OCTAPAD as well?

  • Any way to switch control to different channels?

I'm trying to set up my GIO to use Mainstage as a live loop station. The GIO has a limited number of programmable buttons(12) so I was hoping that I could program two buttons on my GIO to step between prev/next Loopback plugins (similar to the way you can step between prev/next patches), so that when I switch the GIO buttons will control a differnt Loopback plugin. So far I'm only able to program the GIO buttons to control a single Loopback plugin.
My goal is to be able to build-up and break-down songs one loop at a time. With a single Loopback plugin you can build layers and fade-out... that's about it.

When you shutdown there should be a dialog that appears asking if you wish to reopen the saved state. Just opt not to. You can also try using ApplicationStateCleaner-1.0 to selectively stop the resume option. Look for it at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

  • How do I display a live webpage (live data feed) as part of my looping flash movie.

G'Day All, I've been tasked with creating a flash movie for a client (3 scenes, some text and images) simple enough, the challenge is one of the scenes needs to display a live page from a locally hosted website (it's a graphic display of a live data feed from a solar panel array on the roof). What I need to know is how do I set up the flash file to display the live page as one of the scenes of my looping movie? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Ben.

    Why they've removed it ?
Apple have appeared to have made some strange decisions with Keynote 6.1, features missing or not working.
We are told to wait for the updates to correct these anomalies during the first half of 2014.

  • Is there a way on logic studio to laterally link songs for live settings. I never switched to ableton as my tracks are not as loop based and am trying to figure out a way to create a stream of linked songs without blowing out my cpu- maybe logic studio?

i think my question is in the header but i have this dream of taking a string of tracks(songs) and having them synched in a way that I can bring in a kick of one while my synth line from the last is still running- like spinning records but this sounds like a dream because that means two songs would have to be up at once and not only that but timed to be playing at once (all tracks connected to external controllers too) and the CPU would be crazy. This idea would be for the developers to figure out a way to create a system that allows the host song to fade out as the new one comes in in terms of power and their would have to be a new interface that would link the two. i am an electronic dance music producer and some songs are 8 minutes long with some of the tracks as composition piano styles that is hard to loop up and put inside a system like ableton to trigger and the accompanying string lines that are timed against the pianos so was just looking for a way to embed from track to track... any thoughts out there- i am now switching over to studio from pro for 4 years so maybe it's already done but for some reason - i think not. Hope my question is not too silly for the serious pro's out there.
Also, maybe logic should have an appendage platform to each individual track that has a pop and play interface to it that allows people to easily trigger and play each song live. Each song has a live version that has a brighter easier platform to see at night shows and it is still embedded within the original track-- then these appendage live songs can then be linked together. This appendage could be called LOGIC LIVE tracks.

I almost forgot that using folders can allow each folder to contain a song. I also recall touch tracks or one key play...

  • Can't boot live cd strange loop

when I boot teh installation cd it gets to where you can chose boot the live cd tools etc.. when I try to boot the live cd it gets in to some kind of strange loop. looking like this:
    sda: sda1
sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] attached SCSI disk
    done.
    :: Running Hook [archiso]
    :: mounting tmps, size=75%...done
:: waiting for devices to settle...
:: waiting 6s for USB devices
    :: scanning for boot device...
    and then it repeats
is it trying to read my windows xp partition?
with x86 version you get another kind of strange loop but I would rather get x64 working even if I have to use another distro.

Rows without "Yes" tell about "devices" that exists but do not require any special kernel module to work. So the only one probably not working is nVidia video chip. But using nvidia official drivers it should work.
Anyway, having windoze on HDD should not be a problem booting ArchISO... Maybe CD is written with errors or hard disk (or its controller) is taking the last path in its life?
