Loading a second iPod onto same computer

Hi. Another iPod nano (white 4 gb) has been added to the household and will have to be on the same computer as the already existing one (black 4 gb). When the setup window popped up I hit cancel for right now all I want is to charge it. It asked me to download an update, and warned that iTunes was to be uninstalled if I went through with the update. Afraid that my songs would be gone too I cancelled. Will the new iPod still be able to accept songs? If not, what needs to be done to make it ready to go?

See these articles about using more than one iPod on one computer, and with either one or more iTunes libraries.

I have a 40GB iPod already subscribed to my computer. I recently bought an iPod Nano for my girlfriend. How can I download music from my existing iTunes to her iPod (ie. have 2 iPods sharing the same computer?

Two options for using multiple iPods on one machine while sending different music to each are available in this article. You can send the same music to multiple iPods by plugging the second one in to the computer.

  • Computer crashed, need to load itunes from ipod onto new computer.

My hard drive on my pc crashed. I purchased a new computer and I need to transfer all my itunes from my ipod to my new laptop. When I try, a message tells me to erase my ipod and set up new account. I purchased alot of itunes other the past two years. Is all that lost?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Setting up a second ipod on same computer

I have a fifth gen ipod and when I connect to the computer itunes comes up and any new stuff I've downloaded is syched to my ipod. Now, a family member got her own ipod shuffle. When we go to set it up on the computer, is there a way to do it so she has her own itunes, where she can build her own library of songs and it won't synch with my library when she connects it to the computer? I don't know if I'm explaining this correctly. By the way, I'm asking the question before we've actually registered the shuffle on the computer. I wanted to know before doing anything that might mess things up.

It sounds like you have two iPhones you want to sync them with one computer.  I found an article with three ways you can go about doing this.  I recommend picking the method that works best for you and following those steps:

  • Using two iPods on same computer

Our daughter has loaded her iPod onto our family computer and created an account. I now have my own iPod for which i want my own library, which will include photo's. How can I use my iPod and sync to my library without syncing to my daughter's.
I also need to download the library on my iPod onto my own library. I somehow had a library but it has been wiped clean due to a restore. Is there a way of reverse backing up from my iPod to my computer.

See this Apple KnowledgeBase article; it should help:
How to use multiple iPods with one computer
Is there a way of reverse backing up from my iPod to my computer.
Transferring tracks from an iPod back to iTunes has been covered here a number of times already, but again:
First, you need to prevent automatic synchronzation with a blank copy of iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys in Windows. This should stop the iPod from auto synching with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
Then if you're using iTunes 7, you can then copy music that you purchased from the iTunes Store back to iTunes directly (use the Transfer Purchases From iPod command under the iTunes File menu).
If you're not using iTunes 7 or want to copy back other tracks, the easiest way will be to search VersionTracker for "iPod". You'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your tracks and your playlists from your iPod back to your PC.
It's also possible to do this manually, but the procedure is rather involved. If you're interested, though, see this thread:
    MacMuse: Computer crashed
    Hope this helps.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.
    Regards.

  • Syncing two ipods on same computer

When my son synced his ipod (20GB, no video) to our computer my daughter lost her ability to synce her ipod (30GB w/video). Is it possible to have two different itunes libraries and sync both ipods on the same computer? If so, what changes do I need to make?

There are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and user account.
    b) Creating multiple user accounts and having separate libraries.
    Sharing a Library
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists

  • TS1591 I just bought a second iPod touch (4th gen), but when I connect the second iPod to my computer it is not recognizing it. How can I have two iPod's set up????

So I had an iPod touch and everything with it is fine. I just bought a second one for my daughter...exactly the same as my iPod. This second one was bought used, but was reset completely before I plugged it into my computer. My problem is... my iTunes does not recognize the second touch as a device! I can't get it to sync, so I can't get any music or anything onto the device. How can I have two iPod touches on my computer? Is there something special that I have to do to get my computer to recognize this second touch as a different device?? PLEASE HELP!!!

    - If you are using the same USB port and the same cable and have iTunes version 10.7 or later on the computer there is something wrong with the iPod.
    - Does the second iPod work?
    - Does it charge?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Registering multiple iPods on same computer

I currently have a 4G 2nd generation iPod that is registered to our computer. My husband just received a 4th generation iPod. Can you register multiple iPods onto the same computer?
My other question is if you purchase a used iPod, how do you register that and is there anything else we should consider when looking at purchasing a used iPod?
    Thanks for any help.

Can you register multiple iPods onto the same computer?
Yes. Register each iPod as if it was the only iPod being used on that computer.
My other question is if you purchase a used iPod, how do you register that
If iTunes doesn't give you the option of registering it, click here and fill out the forms.
and is there anything else we should consider when looking at purchasing a used iPod?
Restore it when you connect it to the computer.
