Loading from XML file to Oracle

I need to process xml file and load the data into oracle tables.( Oracle8i - Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.2.0 )
I have done processing ( parsing) log files through perl and load to oracle using perl DBI. But never used any XML to Oracle loads.
How do I start ?
And what packages I need to install on top of standard packages.
I have some experience with PL/ SQL and java JDBC connectivity.

You want to immediately run out and get Steve Muench's book "Building Oracle XML Applications" from O'Reilly Press. ISBN 1-56592-691-9
It will answer pretty much every question you have, and answer those you didn't know you needed to ask yet.

  • Data Load from XML file to Oracle Table

    Hi,
    I am trying to load data from XML file to Oracle table using DBMS_XMLStore utility.I have performed the prerequisites like creating the directory from APPS user, grant read/write to directory, placing the data file on folder on apps tier, created a procedure ‘insertXML’ to load the data based on metalink note (Note ID: 396573.1 How to Insert XML by passing a file Instead of using Embedded XML). I am running the procedure thru below anonymous block  to insert the data in the table.
    Anonymous block
    declare
      begin
      insertXML('XMLDIR', 'results.xml', 'employee_results');
      end;
    I am getting below error after running the anonymous block.
    Error :     ORA-22288: file or LOB operation FILEOPEN failed”
    Cause :   The operation attempted on the file or LOB failed.
    Action:   See the next error message in the error stack for more detailed
               information.  Also, verify that the file or LOB exists and that
               the necessary privileges are set for the specified operation. If
               the error still persists, report the error to the DBA.
    I searched this error on metalink and found DOC ID 1556652.1 . I Ran the script provided in the document. PFA the script.
    Also, attaching a document that list down the steps that I have followed.
    Please check and let me know if I am missing something in the process. Please help to get this resolve.

  • Extract data from XML file to Oracle database

    Dear All
    Please let me know, how to extract data from XML file to Oracle database which includes texts & images.
    Thanking You
    Regards Lakmal Marasinghe

    I would do it from the database, but then again, I am a database / PL/SQL guy.
    IMHO the database will deliver you with more options. I don't know about "speed" between the two.

  • Storing data from XML files in Oracle DB

    Hi!
    I just started to work with XML and need to save data from XML files into Oracle database. I tried to run sample from Oracle web site. The code was following:
    public class xmlwritedb
    public static void main(String args[]) throws SQLException
    String tabName = "EMP"; // Table into which to insert XML data
    String fileName = "emp.xml"; // XML document filename
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    // Initialize a JDBC connection
    Connection conn =
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:oci8:scott/tiger@");
    // Insert XML data from file (filename) into
    // database table (tabName)
    OracleXMLSave save = new OracleXMLSave(conn, tabName);
    URL url = save.createURL(fileName);
    int rowCount = save.insertXML(url);
    System.out.println(" successfully inserted "+rowCount+
    " rows into "+ tabName);
    conn.close();
    But it does not work.
    OracleXMLSave object does not see file name.
    Please, help me solve this problem. Also,where is it possible to find any documentation on oracle.xml.* classes API.
    Thank you.
    Maya.

  • Performance problems loading an XML file into oracle database

    Hello ODI Guru's,
    I am trying to load and XML file into the database after doing simple business validations. But the interface takes hours to complete.
    1. The XML files are large in size >200 Mb. We have an XSD file for the schema definition instead of a DTD.
    2. We used the external database feature for loading these files in database.
    The following configuration was used in the XML Data Server:
    jdbc:snps:xml?f=D:\CustomerMasterData1\CustomerMasterInitialLoad1.xml&d=D:\CustomerMasterData1\CustomerMasterInitialLoad1.xsd&re=initialLoad&s=CM&db_props=oracle&ro=true
    3. Now we reverse engineer the XML files and created models using ODI Designer
    4. Similar thing was done for the target i.e. an Oracle database table as well.
    5. Next we created a simple interface with one-to-one mapping from the XSD schema to the Oracle database table and executed the interface. This execution takes more than one hour to complete.
    6. We are running ODI client on Windows XP Professional SP2.
    7. The Oracle database server(Oracle 10g 10.2.0.3) for the target schema as well as the ODI master and work repositories are on the same machine.
    8. I tried changing the following properties but it is not making much visible difference:
    use_prepared_statements=Y
    use_batch_update=Y
    batch_update_size=510
    commit_periodically=Y
    num_inserts_before_commit=30000
    I have another problem that when I set batch_update_size to value greater that 510 I get the following error:
    java.sql.SQLException: class org.xml.sax.SAXException
    class java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException said -32413
    at com.sunopsis.jdbc.driver.xml.v.a(v.java)
    The main concern is why should the interface taking so long to execute.
    Please send suggestions to resolve the problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Best Regards,
    Nikunj

    Approximately how many rows are you trying to insert?
    One of the techniques which I found improved performance for this scenario was to extract from the xml to a flat file, then to use SQL*LOADER or external tables to load the data into Oracle.

  • Load from EBCDIC file to Oracle 9i tables using UTL_FILE

    Hello, I have a requirement to load EBCDIC file from Mainframe to load to Oracle 9i tables and then do some transformation. Then again create EBCDIC file from database table. I'm not sure if this is possible using UTL_FILE, though i have seen people loading using SQL * Loader. If possible, can you please give some sample code for this? I would appreciate your help
    Thanks
    Karuna

    Hi,
    I'm reading data from EBCDIC file in Oracle PL/SQL using UTL_FILE. I wasn't able to read BINARY data type from EBCDIC to Oracle. Initially i thought the problem was due to the following reasons discussed in the article.
    http://support.sas.com/techsup/technote/ts642.html
    <quote>
    Solutions
    The only way to overcome the problem of non-standard numeric data being corrupted by the FTP is to move the data without translating it. This will necessitate making some significant changes in your program. It may also require preprocessing the data file on the mainframe. The sections below list the different types of files and situations, a recommended approach to read in the file, and a sample program to accomplish the task.
    </quote>
    But we have confirmed that the contents of EBCDIC file is fine by looking into the EBCDIC file using a tool that will convert EBCDIC to ASCII. The contents are absolutely ok.
    Now how do i read the Binary data from EBCDIC file.
    My code is like this...
    Open the file using UTL_FILE.FOPEN
    UTL_FILE.GET_LINE(file_handler,string,lengthofthestring)
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(SUBSTR(CONVERT(string,ASCIIUS7,EBCDIC),1,4));
    --This is generating an output as "&". The actual data is
    --005. Since this is
    --declared as binary in EBCDIC file, I'm unable to read
    --and print it.
    --same is the case with other binary data types.
    --I'm able to read the other datatypes clearly
    UTL_FILE.FCLOSE.
    How do I resolve this? I would appreciate your help on this. This is something critical and immediate requirement for us.
    Thanks
    Karuna

    1.Through ctrl file and log file using SQL LoaderPlease clarify :
    Do you want to load the entire file into a single column (XMLType or CLOB), or do you want to extract XML data and store it into different relational columns?
    Please also edit your first post and use tags to enclose the XML source, and do not copy/paste directly from your browser, use "view source" feature so that the content doesn't retain navigation characters (+/-).

  • Reading from XML File to Oracle

    hello,
    I am facing an issue.
    I have an xml file which i want to read into an Oracle dB.
    for ex
    <user>
    <user1 ident="1" />
    <user2 ident="2" />
    </user>
    I would want to pick those attributes and insert them into the dB. i have been hunting high and low, but not reached anywhere.
    The reason, i am using the xml file is, that the user enters values from 3 forms and those values are stored in the xml file. Now, i want to insert these values in the database.
    Any help/suggestion are welcomed and appreciated.
    Thank You
    Sean

    Hi,
    I have been able to read the xml file and convert them into textboxes. The problem, i am facing is, how to i relate each of those values which are generated in the form of textboxes into values required by the Stored Procedure.
    has anyone come across this problem or is there a better approach.
    please advice
    thank you all

  • Extract data from xml file to Oracle table

    hello to all members of forum..i have this stored procedures:
    create or replace
    PROCEDURE INSERTXML2(
    p_xml_in XMLType,
    p_table IN VARCHAR2 ) AS
    v_context DBMS_XMLStore.ctxType;
    v_rows NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    insCtx := DBMS_XMLStore.newContext(p_table); -- get saved context
    dbms_xmlstore.setRowTag(insCtx,'Row');
    DBMS_XMLStore.clearUpdateColumnList(insCtx); -- clear the update settings
    -- set the columns to be updated as a list of values
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdateColumn(insCtx,'ORDERNUMBER');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdateColumn(insCtx,'PLANT');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdateColumn(insCtx,'MATERIAL');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdateColumn(insCtx,'LINENUMBER');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdatecolumn(insCtx,'NOMSPEED');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdatecolumn(insCtx,'STARTDATE');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdatecolumn(insCtx,'FINISHDATE');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdatecolumn(insCtx,'TARGETQTY');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdatecolumn(insCtx,'UNIT');
    DBMS_XMLStore.setUpdatecolumn(insCtx,'SYSTEMSTATUS');
    v_rows := DBMS_XMLStore.insertXML(insCtx, xmldocument);
    -- Close the context
    DBMS_XMLStore.closeContext(insCtx);
    END;
    that works well in little XML files but in XML files that are bigger the stored procedures to not work because string maximum length in Oracle is 4000..can anyone know a solution to pass over this problem?!?!
    one more thing im working with Oracle SQL Developer and Sap Mii, the XML file is generated in Sap Mii and then i have to pass it in one step to database..my one step is this stored procedure

    You can use CLOB for big files.

    try this
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE '/home/oraread/'
    INTO TABLE xmlloadtable
    (id,
    file_name          filler,
    data_xml          lobfile(file_name) terminated by eof
    )you can add the file_name field as a column to your table between the id and xml column and remove the filler word in the .ldr file if you need to keep the name of the file

  • Techinical issue loading an XML file in to database

    hi,
    i am trying to load an XML file into Oracle database using SSIS 2005. the XML file is huge with 4000+ columns and also has many sub catogoreys. if i try to load the file using XSD it is taking lot of space to read the entire file upto 10GB even if the data row in the file is only one. I am only loading 60 columns out of the 4000+ columns. please provide me any alternatives that you can think of.
    Thanks in advance.

    I think Oracle's support for loading XML data to relational tables could be improved. I haven't found a scalable solution for very large XML files that doesn't involve breaking the file up into little parts or writing / copying a good bit of code.XML DB provides two efficient ways to load XML data relationally :
    - Object-Relational storage and FTP : the file is send to the XDB repository and inserted into the default XMLType table declared during schema registration. The underlying storage structures (collections, nested tables) are loaded directly while the data source is read.
    Then it's just a matter of building views over the XMLType table to present the data relationally.
    We can process several GBs with this method.
    - Binary XML and streaming XPath evaluation : binary XML is a post-parsed format which is optimized for streaming processing, it's available since 11.1 and now the default starting with 11.2.0.2.
    and you are supposed to parse the whole thing and return any errors before actually doing anything.That's the DOM view of things.
    XML DB doesn't use DOM when documents are first stored as XMLType (binary or OR storage), or when it does, for example if a functional evaluation of XQuery is required, then a "lazy DOM" model is used where only the needed part(s) of the XML is (are) retrieved.

    You may convert the XML into a simple select and insert manually:
    SQL> INSERT INTO test_emp
       SELECT EXTRACTVALUE (t2.COLUMN_VALUE, '/ROW/TABLE_NAME') table_name,
              EXTRACTVALUE (t2.COLUMN_VALUE, '/ROW/TABLESPACE_NAME')
                                                                  tablespace_name
         FROM TABLE
                 (XMLSEQUENCE
                     (EXTRACT
                         (XMLTYPE
                             ('<?xml version = ''1.0''?>
    <ROWSET>
    <ROW num="1">
    <TABLE_NAME>DEPT</TABLE_NAME>
    <TABLESPACE_NAME>USERS</TABLESPACE_NAME>
    </ROW>
    <ROW num="2">
    <TABLE_NAME>EMP</TABLE_NAME>

  • How to load the .xml file list from 'C:\Drag_list\Modified' into xmltype tb

    Hi all experts,
    I am in Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g 11.2.0.1.0.
    SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.1.0 Production on Tue Feb 22 11:40:23 2011
    is there anyone know why
    SQL> create or replace directory XMLDIR as '/xdb/faq/testdata'
    2 /
    SQL> set long 10000 pages 200 lines 150
    SQL> --
    SQL> select xmltype(bfilename('XMLDIR','2003.xml'),nls_charset_id('AL32UTF8'))
    2 from dual
    worked. but
    SQL> create or replace directory XMLDIR as 'C:\Drag_list\Modified';
    SQL> select xmltype(bfilename('XMLDIR','2011.xml'),nls_charset_id('AL32UTF8'))
    from dual
    did not work?
    IS there any way I can load the .xml file list from 'C:\Drag_list\Modified' into xmltype table?
    Thanks.

    did not work?Generally we'll need a bit more info than "it didn't work", was there an ora-X error message? What was the error?
    Assuming you're on *nix a 'C:\<folder name>\...' directory spec just plain won't work, the directory has to point to a valid storage location on the database server host.
    Try a host command (at the database server) and make sure the .xml file name and location is valid, in sqlplus a "bang" (exclamation) runs a host command, i.e.:
    SQL> !ls -l /xdb/faq/testdata
    ... usr grp ... 2003.xml
    ...But if you are on windows, its the `host` command:
    SQL> host dir c:\drag_list\modified
    mm/dd/yyyy ... 2011.xml
    ...  The create directory ... as ... must point to a valid storage location for it to work, at least that is step one.
