Logon for SQL*Plus

I'm a newbie taking Intro to Oracle 8i:SQL and PL/SQL at our local community college. I've downloaded and installed the Oracle8i: Personal Edition 8.1.7 but am having trouble logging on. Our instructor told us our logon would be Username: Scott Password:Tiger. But it keeps prompting me to enter the password. And then I get an error message. The logon also asks for a host string but I thought if you had the database loaded locally on your home computer that there isn't a host string.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

1. Are you sure your database is started and listener is running?
You should be able to connect without a connect string. Alternatively, please try
scott/tiger@tcp-loopback
This will work only when tnsnames.ora exists in <oracle home>\network\admin folder. Also, it should contain the default entries which are supplied by Oracle as examples.

  • Can we use xml Publisher reporting for sql* Plus in EBS

    Hello All,
    The current report is designed in Sql* Plus Executable report and the output is in txt format, Now the requirement is to have the output in Excel format.
    So is it possible to use the xml reporting and make the output as Excel from the word template we design from MSword as we do for rdf(I have done few reports created in rdf to xml publisher reports in EBS and stand alone as well.).
    Do the same procedure will suit for Sql*Plus reports tooo or Is there any work around to achieve this.
    Thanks and Regards
    Balaji.

    Hi
    Thanks for the reply..
    I tried to do the follwoing
    1. changed the output to xml in the conc. prog.
    2. ran the same report but i am getting the follwoing error in the output file
    The XML page cannot be displayed
    Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
    Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource
    Other reports which are using the Oracle Reports(rdf) as source, i am able to generated the xml as expected....
    So my question is whether we can use sql* reports executable and generate xml in the conc.prog.
    if any one has used the sql*reports for xml publisher reporting... please let me know, so that if its possible i will check my sql needs some validation or tuning...
    thanks in advance

  • What are the defaul username and password for SQL Plus ?

    hello, what are the defaul username and password for SQL Plus ? i'm using the client 11.2.0.1

    You'll need to download the full database installation files for the platform you are using. They are two .zip files, about 2.2 gig total.
    I'm not going to give you the link because you should be able to find it easily. You have to read and accept the license agreement anyway.
    When you install it, you'll be given several options about the type of database you want.
    But before you install anything, you should read the installation manual for your platform.

    No installer, nothing ...That's the beauty of Instant Client, just unzip or move a few files, set PATH if needed, and you have client libraries all "installed" and ready.

    You can give advice ?Generally, required lib files are (n Windows) oci.dll, oraociicusN.dll or oraocieiN.dll (N= e.g. 11). Then for Sql*plus add orasqlplusicN.dll and the .exe from ic-sqlplus package.

    I run sql*plus on windows 2000 professional. I want to set a file

    hi , i have already install my oracle 8i personnel edition to my computer , but my sql plus don't seen to work ,
    i understand that they username are ( scott ) and password are ( tiger ) but after i type them and press ok there will be a box coming out and it said ( Cannot open registry Software \ORACLE\HOME1\SID_LIST Starting with default sid )
    after i click ok there will be another box asking for password , but i what is the password ? it look to me like a internal password , it can't be tiger for this , cos before that i have already type in my username and password , this is the later part , anyone can help? pls reply, thank alot Nigel,
    I'm not sure about Oracle8i Personal Edition. The default username/passwords are:
    scott/tiger
    system/manager
    sys/change_on_install as sysdba
    You could try the database installation discussion forum for more help. If you find out what the password for this dialog is, please post it to this group for the benefit of others.

  • Block Sql Plus Login

    Hi,
    I have database 8.05. For client server application on the client side we mention
    D:\ORACLE\BIN\F50RUN32.EXE c:\test\test.fmx test/test@test
    Now anyone can logon to sql plus and if he knows sql plus as the username and password is there. I dont want to remove sql plus from each machine and at the same time i dont want to user to logon to sql prompt.
    Operation system is windows NT.
    Rgds

    What you need to do is , give only CONNECT permissions to user TEST. So even if the user logs in SQLPLUS he wont be able to access any OBJECTS.
    ALSO you need to create another Oracle user , which will have all the necessary permissions.
    In your client application (FORMS), you need to connect using this new user after you have initially logged in using TEST user
    Hope this helps

  • SQL*Plus and Oracle

    Hi, i have recently started a new course where i am required to learn sql using the sql*plus program and several books. I have downloaded the instant client and the sql*plus program so that i can run them on my computer at home so i can learn at home. However i get a problem where i cannot logon to sql*plus.
    I believe this may be because i do not have an oracle server running on my pc, i am however not sure, would be gratefull for any help.

    Yes, you will need an Oracle Server to connect to. On your personal system, you can download Oracle XE (Express Edition) from OTN and use that. It contains both the server and client (SQL*Plus) components.

  • IF statement in SQL*Plus - how to do it

    Hi,
    In SQL*Plus script, I would like to keep conditional checking (IF statement) and proceed. For example, whatever is done in PL/SQL block below, want to do the same in SQL*Plus script, I know partly it can be done using VARIABLE keyword, conditional checking can be done using DECODE in SELECT statement, but I want to carry out a more complex requirement, hence I want to use IF statement somehow in SQL*Plus.
    Another question, how to do spooling in PL/SQL script, it can be done using UTL_FILE, any other option is there to achieve this.
    declare
    v_ind_count int;
    begin
    select count(1) into v_ind_count from user_indexes where index_name = 'index_object_name';
    IF v_ind_count > 0
    THEN
    dbms_output.put_line('index found');
    ELSE
    dbms_output.put_line('index does not exist');
    END IF;
    end;
    /

    Hello,
    SQL*PLUS has no scripting language. It can only execute SQL and PL/SQL scripts. There are some commands like SPOOL or SET but no commands for conditional statements. You should describe your requirements, maybe we can find a way.
    Or you can search the forum, maybe your question has already been answered
    [Google for SQL*PLUS + condition|https://www.google.de/search?q=site%3Aforums.oracle.com+"SQL*PLUS"+condition]
    # {message:id=4189517}
    # {message:id=4105290}
    how to do spooling in PL/SQL scriptFrom within PL/SQL you can use dbms_output, the spool has to be started by the calling SQL script when it is executed in SQL*PLUS. Or you can use utl_file, but then you can only write to a server directory, not into a client file. To give an advice we need more information about what you want to do.

  • Explain plan results are different in SQL Developer than SQL Plus

    My Environment:
    SQL Developer 1.0.0.15.27
    Platform where SQL Developer is running: Windows XP 2002 SP2
    Oracle Database and Client 9.2.0.7
    Optimizer_mode: FIRST_ROWS
    I have the following SQL statement:
    SELECT a1.comp_id
    FROM temp_au_company a0, au_company a1
    WHERE :b2 = a0.temp_emp_code
    AND a0.comp_id = a1.comp_id
    AND a0.sls_terr_code != a1.sls_terr_code
    AND a1.last_mdfy_date > :b1
    When I run an Explain in SQL Developer I get the following access path (which is the one I really want):
    SELECT STATEMENT                          TABLE ACCESS(BY INDEX ROWID) FEDLINK.AU_COMPANY          NESTED LOOPS                                   INDEX(RANGE SCAN)
    FEDLINK.UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY
              INDEX(RANGE SCAN) FEDLINK.PX1_COMPANY
    However, when I execute the statement with sql_trace turned on and use tkprof to generate the actual access path, the statement executes as follows (which is WAY more expensive):
    call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
    Parse 1 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 0
    Execute 1 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 0
    Fetch 1 3.58 6.68 28136 29232 0 0
    total 3 3.58 6.69 28136 29232 0 0
    Misses in library cache during parse: 1
    Optimizer goal: FIRST_ROWS
    Parsing user id: 979 (FEDLINK) (recursive depth: 1)
    Rows Row Source Operation
    0 NESTED LOOPS
    0 TABLE ACCESS FULL AU_COMPANY
    0 INDEX RANGE SCAN UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY (object id 49783)
    Notice the FULL access of au_company.
    I understand that SQL Developer has nothing to do with why the statement executed the way it did, but why is the Explain in SQL Developer different than the actual execution plan?
    Added note....when I run the explain in SQL Plus it is the same as the actual execution. Here is the explain from SQL Plus:
    explain plan for SELECT a1.comp_id
    FROM temp_au_company a0, au_company a1
    WHERE '1' = a0.temp_emp_code
    AND a0.comp_id = a1.comp_id
    AND a0.sls_terr_code != a1.sls_terr_code
    AND a1.last_mdfy_date > '01-MAY-2006';
    PLAN_TABLE_OUTPUT
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost |
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 2 | 76 | 2597 |
    | 1 | NESTED LOOPS | | 2 | 76 | 2597 |
    | 2 | TABLE ACCESS FULL | AU_COMPANY | 2 | 42 | 2595 |
    | 3 | INDEX RANGE SCAN | UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY | 1 | 17 | 2
    Thanks,
    Brenda

    The explain is different (full scan of au_company in SQL Plus / index access in SQL Developer) even when I use variables in SQL Plus. Here is the output for SQL Plus using variables instead of literals:
    SQL> variable b1 varchar2
    SQL> variable b2 char
    SQL> explain plan for SELECT a1.comp_id
    2 FROM temp_au_company a0, au_company a1
    3 WHERE :b2 = a0.temp_emp_code
    4 AND a0.comp_id = a1.comp_id
    5 AND a0.sls_terr_code != a1.sls_terr_code
    6 AND a1.last_mdfy_date > :b1
    7 /
    Explained.
    PLAN_TABLE_OUTPUT
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost |
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 3184 | 118K| 2995 |
    | 1 | HASH JOIN | | 3184 | 118K| 2995 |
    | 2 | INDEX RANGE SCAN | UX2_TEMP_AU_COMPANY | 3187 | 54179 | 3 |
    | 3 | TABLE ACCESS FULL | AU_COMPANY | 24009 | 492K| 2983 |
    Any other ideas? They should be the same.

  • SQL * PLUS WORKSHEET wrapping

    I am using the SQL*Plus: Release 8.1.6.0.0 and the query gives us a wrapping results which is so hard to read and takes awhile to execute.

    The default value for SQL*Plus LINESIZE is 80 and for PAGESIZE is 25. If the row of records select increases 80 then the records start wrapping. The suggestions are
    1>. either limit the columns selected. i.e. instead of using SELECT * from TABLE use
    SELECT col_a, col_b ... from TABLE
    2>. increase the linesize by using the following
    SET LINESIZE 300 ;
    The valid values for linesize are 0 through 32767.
    However, if you increase the linesize to a very high value, then you will need to do horizontal scroll to see all the columns.
