Lombard screen fades to white during OS X installation

Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to reload OS X Panther on my Lombard Powerbook with 512mb Ram and a replacement 60gb hard drive. I've loaded the OS with the same cd onto my old 15gb hard drive with no problems.
Now for the strange part... I tried to install Ubuntu for PPC and it works with no problems. So i know everything is in it's correct space.
Any ideas what could be wrong??
Thanks, Timmay

Timmay,
I would first try resetting the PRAM:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If no success, reset the power manager:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Regarding the 60GB HD:
Are you sure this HD is good, meaning was it ever in another Mac which booted successfully from it? There are a few HDs made specifically for PCs that do not have the correct firmware for booting a Mac.
Is it possible this HD had any jumpers installed making it a slave and not a master?
If none of the above is helpful (but you know the drive works on a Mac), I would try zeroing the HD using OSX's Disk Utility when booted to the CD, then try another install...there may be some low-issue on the HD that a simple initialization cannot repair. This zeroing will take quite some time.
Addendum: The Lombard has no partition limit/requirement like the Wallstreet.

  • Macbook screen fades to white and locks-up

my macbook has a new bad habit of being slow, too many pinwheel timeouts and now the screen fades to white and must be rebooted to work for 5-10 minutes.  My research so far indicates a bad wiring between the screen and  base or overheating.  Help please

  • Satellite Screen Fades to White

I currently own a Toshiba Satellite E55-A5114. Part number PSKPJU-01K023. I purchased it in February of 2014, making it close to 1.5 years old. I have never had any problems with it until early last week.  While I use the computer, the screen slowly starts to fade to white. It appears like the computer freezes, but I am pretty sure it just freezes the display as it fades to white. I have noticed that I can still move the mouse (although I can't see it) and click things, I just don't know what I'm clicking until the screen returns. A simple knock/tap near the trackpad or near the power button usually brings back the screen. However, lately the problem has persisted and occured much more frequently. I generally see the problem occur in short bursts (it will want to fade to white if I am touching the laptop for a few minutes without me being able to use it). I initially thought the problem was when I applied pressure to the laptop in the form of using the trackpad, or resting my wrists on the laptop as I typed. But, I am not so sure that has anything to do with the problem.  In a nutshell, my screen fades to white occasionally and makes the laptop unusable. All of my drivers/software/etc. are up to date. I have been unable to locate a solution anywhere else online. This is my first time using the forum to discuss my laptop, so please let me know if I can provide any extra information to help fix this problem. Thanks in advance!

    I have the same problem!!!
My macbook often fades to white... but once i tapped the screen it comes back to nomal.
    It is so annoyed.

  • IMac screen fades to white

Just bought a Core 2 Duo iMac with a 17" display. Plugged it in and started working through the "welcome" process... and then the screen flickered a bit and suddenly turned white. I restarted, got to the desktop screen, and then it gradually -- but quickly -- lost color until it became white again. Restarted once more but the screen continued to fade to white while I was calibrating the display...
Any ideas? My response is to take it back to the store tomorrow.

Thanks. A few years ago, I would have spent half a Sunday downloading firmware, reinstalling system software, and trying to resurrect this computer. Today, I'm a true iMac user: I expect to plug it in and go. And go I will -- back to the store for a replacement.

  • MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 and the video screen fades to white

    Hello All:
I have a MacBook 6,1 with a 2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.6.8 and from time to time the video just fades to a white screen. If I unplug the power supply or change the angle of the screen the video returns to normal. Can anyone tell me what is going on here? Thank you very much in advance.
    Best,
    Jennifer

Changing the angle of the screen indicates a bad inverter cable. The cable runs through the left hinge and over time fails due to opening and closing the lid. See here how to replace it http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Inverter+Cable/4772/1

  • Screen fades to white slowly, PB freezes

    whats up
i was just sitting here looking at pics, i looked up, then looked back @ the screen and the screen started fading to white very slowly. like what i was looking at before was there, but the colors of the picture were really small lines and the whole screen started fading. kind of the like an aging picture, going very white. the mouse wouldn't move, no key response, i had to hard power of and turn it on again. anyone have an idea? what the **** is wrong with this thing!!!

    Hi, Nana,
It does look to me like a software problem, rather than a hardware problem. Since it doesn't seem to occur frequently, this might also point to a software situation rather than hardware. if that is so, then it is good, but might be difficult to track down.
    What i would do:
first: back up - just to make sure not to loose anything important.
then: switch screensavers off and check whether it happens again. this might take some time, since it doesn't appear frequently, as you say.
if not - then it is related to the screen saver section. i would move the screensaver.plist file to another name, and put the screen saver back on, and see again. But all these tests will take a lot of time, i'm afraid.
You could alos try to clear PRAM.
hope this helps; it looks like a difficult question, since you cannot make easy checks.
    Post back, please.
    Thomas

  • Screen fades to white

I have an older Macbook and the screen keeps fading in and out and the screen freezes.  If I push on the back of the screen it will start to work. Is there away to fix it or do I need to buy a new one?

    Hey Jeh88,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
This sounds like it is an application error, instead of updating the software you may need to do a clean reinstall of the BlackBerry Device Software.  Create a backup and perform all the steps in this article: http://t.co/FRktoq1

  • Why was my screen fading to white?

So I got my MacBook two years ago. After about a year, my screen started slowly fading to white and acted slow out of nowhere. The recent times I used it, my screen no longer turned white but it was still so slow. I went ot the Genius Bar recently (which is absolutely great!) and the one who helped me said that I had an anti-virus program, Symnatec that slowed down my programs because it checked if there was a virus in everything I did. He deleted the app for me and he suggested I upgraded to Mac OS X Mountain Lion but my RAM was at the bare minimum of 2GB. So I went to a computer place in the city where they could add more. I upgraded to a 3GB RAM and upgraded to Mac OS X Mountain Lion. My quesstion is, why did my screen fade to white but then stop out of nowhere? Will it happen again? Please let me know ASAP! Thank you!

    PRAM
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    SMC
    Fans
The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
    Lights
The keyboard backlight appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have this feature).
The Status Indicator Light (SIL) appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have an SIL).
Battery indicator lights, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portables that use non-removable batteries).
The display backlight doesn't respond correctly to ambient light changes on Mac computers that have this feature.
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
    System Performance
The computer is running unusually slowly although it is not experiencing abnormally high CPU utilization.
Application icons may "bounce" in the Dock for an extended amount of time when launched.
Applications may not function correctly or may stop responding after being opened.

  • The screen on my MacBook has been flickering and shaking up and down. It starts flickering, shaking, gets 'pixelated,' then eventually begins to fade to white and freezes. Restarting sometimes helps, but only temporarily. Why is this? How can I fix it?

The screen on my MacBook has just started flickering and shaking up and down while I am using it. The screen starts flickering, shaking, gets pixelated, begins to freeze, and eventually fades to white. Why is it doing this? How can I fix it?
It is a newer MacBook, just over 1 year. It is well cared for, hasn't been dropped, etc. I don't want to pay for expensive repairs for such a new computer, and I certainly can't afford a new one!
I've tried updating my system like the Support page suggested, but no improvement. The problem started just the other day, and is progressively getting worse.
.... as I typed this, it did it again. Only, this time it did not flicker and shake, but got 'pixelated' (pixels came up checkered-like darkened and lightened). It did this for about 2 minutes and then stopped after I did not touch the computer.... Now it is flickering... HELP!

it means that it is not a hardware issue.  Other then that, Im not too sure.  Sorry I can't help you any further, but Im sure others members of this forum will read your question and be able to help you.  Good luck

  • Macbook screen pixelates and fades to white and freezes

Over the past week I have had a problem while watching movies online or playing games... The screen starts to pixelate then fades to white and freezes. At this point I can still hear whats going on but the screen is almost all white and frozen... Is anyone else having this problem or do you know what to do?

I have this exact same problem. If I squeeze or 'manipulate' the screen housing, the screen comes good again. Does anyone know where the connector to the screen from the motherboard lives?
Perhaps its just a bad connection??
    Any help would be appreciated.

While in the B/W desktop go to the System/Accessability preference pane and check to see if this checkbox is selected:
If it isn't toggle it on and then off again and see if there's any change.

  • My macbook screen occasionally goes white

About 3 times a day, my macbook screen will freeze, and fade to white.  It remains that way for a few seconds and then slowly comes back to normal.  My mouse and all keys are locked up during this and it will first cover in little dots.
    Any ideas?

    UPDATE -
It is now morning and the MacBook is still exhibiting the symptoms where the screen blacks out and won't recover unless you press F1 - F2 and run the display brightness all the way off and then bring it up one tic of brightness.
I can reset SMC and it works normal again but if the computer goes to sleep the screen does the black out thing again. Changing the battery does not make a difference. Sage: that must have been a special case for you.
I notice the System Preferences - Energy Pane is unavailable if I try to open it it says Energy Pane unavailable.
I have multiple hard drives for this MacBook so I booted from a clean copy of 10.6.3. The energy pane is back normally and the screen doesn't black out even after the machine sleeps.
If your machine exhibits these symptoms then try this.
