Long delay opening files

Just installed Dreamweaver 8 & all updates on an intel
Mac. Everytime I go to open a file I get the beachball for up to 30
seconds before I can open the file. Ive reinstalled & the
behavior is unchanged. Would appreciate any clues.

To answer your questions. I don't use DW to work remotely, I
only work locally. All of my local files are kept on a windows
server accessed via AFP. There are no external images being
accessed & the delays are for opening any file, even a blank
file. I do notice that when I use the open recent feature the files
open automatically with no delay. But there are also delays when I
change view mode and when I edit anything in design mode.

• [SOLVED]Long delay opening files if multiple selection in file chooser

Hi,
When I try to open several files in an application, (example: Gimp), by multiple selection in the 'open' filechooser, there is a long delay (about 1 sec per file) before the Gimp starts opening image files. During this delay, the disk access LED flashes continuously and iotop indicates that its jbd2 accessing (writing) on the / partition on my SSD drive. This is despite the fact that the image files are on an external USB hard disk and the Gimp would have no reason to write anything on the / partition. Even if it did, the image files are small (50-100 kb) and such a long delay would be out of place.
The significant thing is that the delay occurs _before_ the Gimp starts opening files. It seems the delay is in the filechooser making a list of the files to be opened. Once the Gimp starts opening files, it finishes quickly.
This sort of thing happens with other apps that can open several files by multiple selection in a filechooser.
Any hints please? I am lost here :-(
The delay is caused by (apparently) GTK which writes to the ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel file, to record all the files that are opened in the multiple selction. Even so, this writing seems too slow, even when opening a large number of files (the ones that I open by multiple selection, by an app that I am working on, are about 10k each, so opening a few hundred should not take the delay I see, about 30 sec).
Anyhow, I patched the problem eventually by chattr +i ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel to stop the writing. But I would prefer to disable the use of this file by configurtion rather than brute force, if there is such a choice.

I re-installed and reconfigured Arch so that I now have a fresh, uptodate system. In the process, I found that this problem occurs when I run the Gimp as a normal user. If I run it under sudo, all is well. I am strggling to find out why, but no results so far (have checked file permissions where I thought there may be a problem, but no joy).
Any hints much appreciated.

• How can I put OSX 10.7 on a new Macbook Air. Maverick no longer allows "open file in a new window" and I really miss it. At the Apple Store they told me it can't be added to the new OSX 10.10 so I want to change the OSX on the new Macbook Air and it

I have been using a 2012 Mac pro to do HD video editing. I bought a new portable Macbook Air only to find that Maverick no longer has "open files in a new window" which I use all the time in the very large folders of video clips and royalty-free music. I asked at the Apple Store how I could get this back on the Macbook Air and they said it couldn't be done so I thought I would re-format the HD and install 10.7 on it and was notified by the Macbook Air I can't put 10.7 on that computer. Apple use to give this as an option but now they have gone more to the attitude of "Do it our way or go to ****!" In anger I went out and bought a Dell Laptop and Pinnacle Studio 17 which I have been learning to use. I have been an Apple/Mac user since 1979 and would still rather do my video editing on a Mac. Is there any way that I can force the Macbook Air to let me load in OSX 10.7 where there is still the option to "open files in a new window" or is there a way to add this to Maverick? The experts at the Madison, WI Couldn't give me any help on this.

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and uncheck the box to open folders in a new tab.

Look at this comprehensive trouble shooting document;
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
I suggest that you start with SMC and PRAM resets.
Then a Safe Boot.
Ciao.

This issue occurs whether or not I have "Documents & Data" selected for sync in iCloud preferences.
Interestingly enough, if I immediately open another file after this occurs, the issue does not happen again right away. However, if I wait about two minutes and open one, it does occur every time.
(Note: My acount name and email address have been replaced with "username" but the log is otherwise unaltered)

I have the exact same problem. It's been driving me crazy ever since I "upgraded" to Lion. I finally traced it to iCloud and the Mobile Documents folder using Console, which lead me here.
Any time I launch Pages, QuickTime, or TextEdit (TextEdit, really?), the first file I try to open gives me the spinning beachball of death for about 10 seconds before I can do anything.
I did numerous searches regarding the spinning beach ball of death in relation to those apps and found nothing germaine before I specifically searched for "collection does not match configured AppleID." This makes me think that a lot of other people are having this problem who just haven't discovered this thread.
I will try disabling "Documents & Data" but an actual fix would be greatly appreciated. "It just works" has not applied to many aspects of iCloud. I thought MobileMe had its issues, but iCloud is a mess in my personal experience, well beyond this issue. I appreciate the potential and am clinging to some faith in Apple, but Lion and iCloud have been REALLY testing my patience. Snow Leopard was a rock. This all seems like beta software hastily ported from iOS.

• Delay opening files

Hi
I use Dreamweaver CS6 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 with MAMP PRO to manage 4 sites.
This configuration are OK and works perfect without error.
When close all files and open one then I have a delay near 15 seconds (appears the cursor with the multicolor circle), and after that delay, all files in the same site open instantly.
Ok, I can leave at least one file open and all the other will open fast, but why Dreamweaver are so slow when close all files in the same site and re-open? Need to configure in a different way to remove this behaviour?
Can you help me?
Thanks.
Tom

Not sure why this is so in your case but in general Dreamweaver needs to check the validity of your software by looking at the serial number and whether it is activated or not. If you look in the Process Inspector of your system, you will find that there are so many processes running in the background and these all have to load before loading DW.
15 seconds may be a lot to wait but on my old Windows XP it takes about a minute to launch it (this is whole 60 seconds or 4 times 15 seconds). That is why I prefer to use CS4 on XP machines.

• Java applet runs inside html page when opened with http, but no longer with "Open File" menu, why?

Using the "Open File" menu, file:///Users/234866H/Documents/atom/atomic1.html fails to open the java applet atomic1.class inside atomic.html. However, http://atom.curtin.edu.au/igor/atom/atomic1.html works just fine.
I suspect the problem arose following the recent java upgrade. It is also there on Safari.
Testing Java at http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp yields:
"Your Java is working. Your Java configuration is as follows: Vendor: Apple Inc. Version: Java SE 6 Update 51 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6.8 Java Architecture: 64-bit"
However, this is an http test, and not an "Open File" test.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I don't know about this specifically but this is what I would try.
Instead of the string "破烂物程序员..."
Set the encoding type in the String constructor first...
ie:
new String( "破烂物程序员...","GB18030");
Here is a little class I whipped up to show the CharSets that are available to you..
public class ShowAllCharSets
ShowAllCharSets()
Map myMap = Charset.availableCharsets();
Iterator iterator = myMap.keySet().iterator();
while (iterator.hasNext())
System.out.println("Char set name = "+((String)it.next()));
public static void main(String args[])
new ShowAllCharSets();
}Then use the preset charset String with the specific encoding already set for your menu items.
GB18030 I picked arbitrarily because it is Chinese and you may have to try another.
Good Luck!

• Reader X long delay opening multiple documents

I have Reader X (10.0.1). With Protected Mode enabled, there is a 30-second (or more) delay when opening a second (or third, etc.) PDF document. Task manager does not show any processor usage during this time. Any ideas how to fix this?
Hardware & OS: P4 3.2 GHz w/ HT enabled, 2.5 GB RAM, Win XP Pro SP3
J

In case you haven't already found a solution, here's a fix I found in another forum:
Go to Edit / preferences / general - the uncheck box "Enable protected mode at startup" This got rid of the lag in opening adobe docs.
It works!

• Long delay opening socket

I'm seeing a very strange behavior in a simple client/server application. When we run it all on "localhost" (ie both client and server on "localhost") everything works fine. But when we run the application with Client and Server located on two different computers (located in the same room but networked together) here's the behavior we're seeing:
1. Server listens on Server Socket.
2. Client attempts to open a socket to Server. Client is kept waiting for a long time for this socket; usually the wait time is 20 seconds (and this is very repeatable) but sometimes the wait time is very short. Usually we're seeing the 20second wwait time.
Any suggestions as to how to debug this or as to what may be causing it?

• Photoshop CS5 - what is causing major delay when opening files?

New laptop running windows 7, 64 bit machine, i5 intel core processor, NVIDIA NVS 3100M graphics card. When I open new pictures in photoshop there is a significant delay - the pointer just sits for several seconds seeming to 'look' for files, then the round (new hourglass in 7) rotates forever! I timed this new machine with a 7 year old Dell Latitute running CS1 photoshop - opened 11 photos from each hard drive...the 7 year old computer opened them in 15 seconds, the NEW machine took 80 seconds. I'm not trying to do anything fance with Photoshop, just simple photo corrections, so I don't need a fancy graphics card. WHY is it taking so long to open files - I've changed every setting Adobe recommends and nothing helps. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

here's the log - i just opened photoshop - i didn't open any photos before copying the log.

• When opening DIR files I get a long delay while Director "Builds True Type Fonts"

Running 11.5 on a Mac OSX 10.6.8
When opening DIR files I get a long delay while Director "Builds True Type Fonts"
Anyone know how to work around this?
I've got all the fonts in my library and embedded in Director. (Do I need to dump them from my DIR? Dump and reinstall?)

Two bits of advice:
1) Pare down your code to no more than 30-50 lines. Enough to compile and show the problem, but not so much as to make our eyes bleed, and for no one to want to read your post or help you.
2) You would be wise not to state that your problem is "urgent". Even if it is urgent to you, realize that it is not urgent to us. Many here take offense to this as it implies to them that a) the poster thinks that his post is more important than everyone else's, and b) that the poster wants to put pressure on the volunteers who come here to help on their own free time. Just a friendly word of advice.
I'll be happy to help when you've posted a reasonable amount of code. Good luck!

• Bridge CS4 has LONG delay in opening the first image

Photoshop CS4 upgrade was my Christmas present this year. I've been fighting this annoying "problem" ever since then...
I DO see this "problem" on my desktop PC, which is a Dell XPS-400 PC (with 2 GB of memory) running Windows XP (Media Center Edition) with SP3 installed. I DO NOT see this "problem" on my laptop, which is a Dell XPS-1530 (4 GB of memory) running Windows Vista SP1. I installed the Photoshop CS4 software exactly the same way on both machines, and I have the preferences set the same in both Photoshop and Bridge (and Camera Raw) on both machines.
Here's the situation: I first open Photoshop CS4 and then click on the Bridge icon in the Application Bar to open Bridge. When I use Bridge to open a photo, by either double-clicking the thumbnail, or right-clicking on the thumbnail and choose "Open" from the context menu, there is a 42 second delay before Photoshop opens the file. This long delay only occurs when opening the very first file.
Once that first image file is opened, double-clicking any thumbnail in Bridge will have it open in Photoshop CS4 in about 2 seconds. There will never be another long delay in having Bridge pass a file to Photoshop (or Camera Raw) again - until I close the applications and restart them. Once I restart the applications, the first photo takes 42 seconds to open....
This delay does not occur in opening the first image file if I right-click on the thumbnail in Bridge CS4 and choose "Open With" and manually choose Photoshop CS4.
Even if that is how I open the first (or several) image file(s), the first time I try to open a file from Bridge by double-clicking on a thumbnail (or right-click on a thumbnail and choose "Open") there will be that annoying 42 second delay before it opens.
It does not matter what the file format the first image file is (JPG, PSD, TIFF, or DNG), or what the file format of any subsequent image file is. As long as I do not close the Bridge and Photoshop applications, any subsequent file will be passed from Bridge to Photoshop in only a couple of seconds.
I have manually set the File Name Extensions in Windows XP, and in the Preferences in Bridge. Both have been set to open the file types listed above with Photoshop CS4.
I have uninstalled CS4, and have used two seperate Registry cleaners (CCleaner and jv16 Power Tools) before re-installing Photoshop CS4. This had no effect on this situation. I've run "chkdsk C: /r" several times, with no problems reported.
I have been searching through these forums for over 2 weeks now, and I have not seen anyone else report such a problem. I use my XP desktop much more than my Vista laptop, so I'd really like to fix this situation, but I don't know what else to try.
Gregg Mack

Don,
Thanks for all of your suggestions. I tried them all, but the problem remains exactly as it was. To properly document my efforts:
In Bridge's Preferences, I Purged and Compacted the Bridge Cache, then changed it's location to D:\Bridge_Cache (D:\ is a second physical internal SATA drive).
I can not tell the exact size the Cache is set to, but the slider in Bridge's Preference is very close to the left end (10,000) of the slider.
The Windows Page File is set to 3072 MB min and 4096 max, and it is entirely on the D:\ drive. (I have 2GB of physical RAM in the PC.)
I defragmented the C:\ drive using Diskeeper 2008 Pro Premier, and even ran a Boot Time Defrag.
Rather than set some exclusions for Norton Anti-Virus, I jsut disbled that Virus checking program for all of my experiments.
I deleted the Bridge Preference File by holding down the Ctrl key as Bridge was restarted.
I even deleted the entire contents of the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. I then rebooted the PC - twice. I then re-disabled Norton Anti-Virus.
The PC is approaching 3 years of age, but it is a 3.2 GHz Pentium D machine with 2 GB of RAM and two internal SATA drives. Every other application that I run on this machine responds reponsively. Again it is only the FIRST image file that I have Bridge hand off to Photoshop (or Camera Raw) that takes forever. The second and subsequent image files take a second or two.... That doesn't sound like it's an "old hardware" problem to me.
I'm willing to try anything else that you, or anyone else would like to suggest.
Thanks
Gregg Mack

• Applescript photoshop open file delay

Hi,
I have a problem with photoshop and applescript. When I run the following simple applescript which opens a document and saves it in a location:
tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS3"
open picpathalias
-- delay 10 -- quite a long delay is needed
save current document in file regpicpath as JPEG
end tell
I often receive the following error:
Adobe Photoshop CS3 got an error: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop.
- The object current document is not currently available.
It seems there is a race between the open cmd and the save cmd. This most often happens when photoshop is not yet an open application. It almost never happens when photoshop is already open. Is there a programmatic way to make open block until the document is available?
Thanks.

To clarify, I would like to avoid a soln that uses an arbitrary timeout delay if possible.

• Logic suddenly takes considerably longer to open a file...?

I have a 30 minute file considering of 4 tracks, 1 stereo backing (continuous 30 min audio file) (out 3-4), 1 mono bass (continuous 30 min audio file) (out 2), 1 click (audio instrument) (out 1) and an EXS24 Channel (out 3-4) with automated program changes.
Also in this file is a detailed sequence of time signature changes and tempo changes.
The audio files are located in the same folder as the logic file. Up till now logic quickly opened the file in about 1-2 minutes. However recently i made some changes and extensively cut up the audio and used the snip feature to delete certain bars and pull all the automation data back. Subsequently I bounced down all the audio again, once all the cuts were made, to make continuous audio file.
Now when I load the file (which basically consists of the same setup as previsouly) it takes 5-10 mins - this is a bit crap, considering the time it took before and the setup in a gig.
I have deleted all unsused audio files from the audio window. Could it be possible that logic still has a memory of all the cuts i did previsouly and even though they are not been used any more in the project it still loads all of this information, when I load the file. I am sure whatever information is delaying the file opening is not needed, I just to find it and get rid!
Sorry for the long post, hopefully it makes sense.
Much thanks - please some one help (gig tomorrow!)
Cheers,
Tim
