Long time to load a first page, get "the connection has timed out" frequently.

Frequently takes a long time to get to first page. Even a "speed test" to check my DSL connection. Usually can get to "google.com" quickly but it did come up slow today (just a test for a simple page).
I have a wireless N router with it's own Firewall (which I didn't want) and I think I've turned it off. Symantec firewall, don't think WinXP firewall is on.
Tried refresh of Adobe Flash Player per suggestion in this forum, no help.
Would like to have a tool to see how long each step of getting to the web takes so I can see if there's a bottleneck.
Occasionally "try again" button works on the "connection has timed out" message.
My PC is 6 yr old. xp-home, lots of ram, HDD available. Run Symantec AV/MBAM frequently. Ran Housecall and Dr. Web- no problems.
Talked to my DSL provider and Symantec in depth. Similar lethargy when I get IE running but not as frequent as under FF. Measured my DSL speed - 5MB as promised.
When the lag occurs, Task Manager does not show FF taking a lot of processor time.
Have done the things suggested in FAQ to help with performance.
Also going to bleepingcomputer.com to see if there are suggestions there.
I'm hoping someone has experienced an analog to this and has a suggestion to diagnose and solve. Thanks - Mike.

Here's your sign! This is my problem and its solution. Let me know if someone needs help to interpret.
If you frequently get "connection timed out", go to your ISP and get Manual DNS addresses. Then beat them till they put a real fix on their system.
Problem is in the DNS server service provided by my DSL provider, Bell South/AT&T. Result of a poor performing DNS is that one can't get thru to the selected site.
If you do a web search +dsl +"time out" you will see the history with Windstream. THEY finally issues a system-wide fix which, it appears, flattened the issue. Then add +AT&T to see that experience. I did not read it all thru, I'm wasted chasing this problem. I don't give AT&T ANY credit for customer service or heading off problems for their customers on this one.

So it appears I can't put screen shots in here. Well I hope you get the gist.
In fact this is a bit hosed up.
It says if you user "automatic dns" you're OK, that's opposite of my experience.
I changed to the specified DNS addresses and things seem 99.9% fixed.
I also changed my Router (wireless) settings.
If there's a survey of my experience here I'll take it.

This message "The connection has timed out" only happens when i attempt to log on to my blackboard account for college. All other log in' work fine.

Thanks. So there's no means of knowing whether a text message has been delivered, not to mention time of delivery. Perhaps I've gone for the wrong phone. It might do a lot but seems to miss out on some basics.

As suggested by Firefox, I cleared my history and cache. I also downloaded and ran one of the Firefox recommended malware applications. I also removed Firefox from my firewall and then added it back as suggested by Firefox. I have no problem accessing the site using Internet Explorer.

Thanks jscher2000. Yes, in Safe Mode I was able to go the site. I read the possible ways that Firefox suggests to try to fix the problem, i.e., go through all my extensions to find the problem or reset Firefox to the original factory settings. Where do you suggest I go from here?

Keep getting the message the connection has timed out over and over again

While trying to go on certain sites I continually get the connection has timed out message. Everyone else tells me they have no issues but I do it seems it is for government count and city employment sites. Help I am trying to apply for work and cannot do so. Thank you.

I went to Norton and they were trying to help me, even to the point of removing Norton. They figured it was a firewall problem and I agree. They were not able to help me, but I shut the computer down, unplugged the modem and router, waited about 10 minutes and then started plugging everything in. It all works fine. I think the error message was cached in the memory and it needed to be reset to erase it.

High number of "The connection has timed out" errors. Where do I set the time out period (variable and file name) - windows 7

I usually use a wireless network at home and have very few time out problems with Firefox.
I am travelling and using Optus Wireless broadband where the average ping to a site is 700+ms .
I suspect that this is the cause of the high number of timeouts I am experiencing.
Optus say there are no problems so I think I will have to set the timeout to a longer period.
Please advise what variable name/s (and in which file) the timeout is set for LOADING PAGES.

Having the same problem 4 out of 5 times I try to navigate to a new site I get the error "connection has timed out".
My I phone works fine on the same wireless connection so it must be something to do with the computer. The problem occurs on IE, firefox, and google chrome.
I too would like to know how to how to either fix this problem or failing that to extend the length of time before the connection times out (which is currently only about 5 seconds).

I can't connect to livejournal. It keeps saying that the connection has timed out. It has been almost a full day since this happened. I tried loading livejournal on Explorer, but that didn't work either

When I try connecting to livejournal, it tries for a while, then I get an error page saying that the connection has timed out. What's odd is that usually livejournal gives us a warning when the site will be temporarily offline. When I try connecting to livejournal through Explorer, the same thing happens. Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. OK. Possibly onto something here. On the left hand side of the Business Rule tab there are all the calc scripts. Then only Bus Rule that appears there is a new one I created that was an exact copy of the Business Rule in question, just with a '- New' appended to the end of the name. Funny thing is both Business rules that are attached to the form do appear on the right hand side. Thus how could that be? How does one get the Bus Rules to appear on the left hand side? Haven't been in EAS Business Rules mode for a long time.

Everytime I try to download a movie I purchased on itunes, I get the network timed out msg. I am using my verizon internet card with my ipod touch. For some reason, it will not recognize the wireless connection we have in places we travel to. My computer connects to whatever wireless connection but my ipod says not found. Never lists available networks around us like my computer does. Also, I can't seem to find a number to call the itunes store for help downloading the movies I purchased. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I probably should add I have no problems downloading music from itunes, just the movies I purchase.
