Look at what aperture is doing to my photos!

Please take a look at these images:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geoff.k.lloyd/aperture.html
Since upgrading to aperture 1.1 it has done this with every photo i have! All the dark areas on my photos look like this! you can see an original file and an aperture screenshot of the dog picture to really see the difference. Does anyone know how to solve this im desperate now!

If it isn't on, then there actually is a bug in the
10.4.6 update that seems to cause something like
this, although less severe.
I'm being hit by this bug big time. It's not less severe, it's more severe and it renders Aperture worthless for me.
I've sent a few samples to Apple.
After having played with v1.1 I thought I would process an assignment from Wednesday in Aperture (~900 images) but this bug caused me to give up.
Opening images into Photoshop shows that they are fine but with the images in Aperture off so much - there's no way I can edit images, tweak the parameters, because the previews aren't close to accurate.
The click white balance bug can be worked around but this can't be. You can't open every image into Photoshop to confirm how it looks.
I'm not trying to be overly dramatic or sensationalistic but... Apple, you are really testing professional photographers' patience to the extreme. v1 is sub-par, v1.1 is touted as being the re-launch we were waiting for but it too is sub-par and Aperture is still not usable.

  • What am I doing wrong? Photos will not print.

I finally learned a little about layers when I got CS6 on my Mac.
    I bought 2 Topaz plug-ins, Adjust & Simplify.
I took 39 photos on a flash drive to the local CVS & Rite-Aid and both machines said 34 of my photos are corrupt and will not print.
    What am I doing wrong?
I did change them from psd to jpeg before putting them in a desktop folder.
    Could that be the problem?
    Thanks, Eli

Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base and let us know if it solves your problem.

  • Take a look at what Aperture can do!

I`d like to have the ability to view pictures like the way it`s possible in Aperture:
    - Realtime loop even with RAWs
    - compare images side by side (Aperture puts as many images as you want side by side and btw. in a much more elegant and faster way than you can do it in PS)
    - more speed! Compared to PhotoMechanic Bridge is extremely SLOW! Thumbnails come up maybe 10 times as fast in PhotoMechanic. And if you want a jpeg or a contact sheet from a RAW file it`s nearly realtime while Bridge/Photoshop is working for ever.
As much as I like Adobe products, but Aperture has blown me away in terms of its user interface. Just take a look at the lighttable and the ability to stack pictures.
    Stefan

I got really excited by the features ofered by Aperture and seriously considered buying a Mac just to use them. A shame they screwed it up so incedibly badly in other areas. Still showed how primitive and lacking the Bridge interface is though. Still the best [in many ways] of a ropey bunch though.

  • Front Row Photos - Aperture Library does not contain photos

    Dear all,
Front Row is working fine (iTunes, movies etc) except for photos.
I don't use iPhoto, so it's linked to my Aperture Library.
Front Row shows two Aperture Libraries:
    - Aperture Library
    - Library
However both are empty. The structure is shown, so projects are shown, but everywhere yellow triangles with an exclamation mark and the message"there are no photos in this album"
It's been bothering me for a while, so any help is sincerely appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Peter

and then 3 months later, I found out that I need to update my previews in all the projects in Aperture. Now my Front Row is working (as well as syncing with iPad iPhone etc.). So that mystery is solved, but, I still have two libraries showing up in Front Row:
Aperture Library (which shows projects, no folder structure)
Library (which is exactly what my Aperture contains)
How do I get rid off one of these?
    Thanks,
    Peter

  • My Ref. HD does not look like my Aperture Library

    Hi,
I don't neccessarily have a problem, but I do notice that my referenced library on an ext. HD does not look like my Aperture library on my mbp. I notice that there are alot of separate images not in albums or projects or folders. Is there a way or need to reorganize the ref. images into a similar setup as my library. Any thoughts are welcome as I'm a bit of a neat freak, esp. with photos etc.
    Thank you.
    John

OK we're talking past each other here and not getting much accomplished.
The top screenshot from this post Re: My Ref. HD does not look like my Aperture Library is not from within Aperture. How did you take that screenshot? Aperture does not display dates like that AFAIK, that sure looks like a Finder window.
I believe the best thing you can do right now is to read the User Manual, especially the part about the parts of the Aperture library and Kirby's very good user tip. It should clear up your terminology and make things clearer for you.
    good luck
    regards
To better explain my point. This is what a screenshot of an Aperture Library would look like from within Aperture
This is a screnhsot of a Finder window

  • In Aperture using the external photo editor Adobe photoshop elements 10 editor.  My photo will not come back to aperture unless the photo is saved on the desktop and then imported back to Aperture. What am I doing wrong?

Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor as external editor in Aperture.  The issue is once i make the changes in Photoshop it request that I save (use tiff) and the photo is not update in Aperture.  What am I doing wrong?

    Marianne,
how do you save? Photoshop Elements can save either versions or overwrite the original file, afaik.
You need to set the save preferences, so that it will write to the original file and not write a version. Also the filename extension should be "tiff" and not the default "tif" (I think you did that already).

  • I have a MAC and when i look things up it keeps asking me to install latest adobe flash [layer. I complete installation but it still does not allow me to view. What am I doing wrong?

I have a desktop computer- MAC. When I am looking for information or pulling up games for my grandkids,  it will say I need to download the latest version of dobe Flash Player to view. I have downloaded this numerous times yet it still does not allow me to view. What am I doing wrong?

Could be the OS X version is too old for the later recommended Flash player version.
So this is where knowing what your computer really is, and the exact OS X version running in it. There is a hardware limit to upgrading the OS X in a PowerPC Mac with a ceiling of OS X 10.5.8 at the latest. This also limits the upgrade to a later version Adobe Flash player.
If the computer is not an older PPC-based Mac, and instead has an Intel core-duo or core2duo, an upgrade to OS X 10.6.8 is possible through purchase of the retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD and after installation, run Software Update to get the 10.6.8 Combo update v1.1 for Snow Leopard. This will not work on a PowerPC based Mac.
Should the computer be able to run a later OS X, a newer Player could be installed.
If the ceiling as suggested above be the case, and the workaround possible.
The question posed by Klaus is a minimal request for basic info.

CC and CC2014 are the current versions of Photoshop.  CC stands for Creative Cloud.
That being cleared up, a respectful request:

  • Linux copy the Mac Dock to make it looks like MAC! But what's Apple doing?

When I'm disappointed at PCs, it's not only because of Microsoft's Windows, but also millions of so-called different PCs only with the same Windows system inside. So I wanna to look for a new computer with unique features, I think Mac is the best choice I can never find. But now I'm annoyed that Linux are copying Mac from Mac Dock, and using some themes to make Linux look like a 'real' Mac!? Then what's Apple doing about it? Just standing by and making Linux themselves? Apple does not mind about it? Mac Dock isn't Apple's? If Linux are all with MAC OS X copying-features, then what's MAC OS X? Who will know, when millions of computer with a Mac Dock Linux, who will remenber that the DOCK is apple's? Maybe people will think: MAC OS X? just a Linux-outlook system! OH~GOD!! At that time what's the difference between MAC and Linux? And what's the difference between MAC and PC? Millions of computers with the same outlooking system as MAC? OH~NO!! I wanna Apple to give me a full answer about this!!

If you are really worried about the looks of things like the dock being in linux vs mac, there is no type of Computing device that can save you.
Apple may have patents and trademarks, but even if someone made a window manager that cloned os x's gui completely, it would not have the underlying power that goes with it. Linux is similar to Darwin, but osx's implementation of a gui is nearly flawless in my opinion. I am a linux admin by trade. I used to run linux desktops. i struggled for years to find a gui that worked well on linux, because I needed the power that goes with it from the command line / mem usage etc. Then enter my first mac purchase with a macbook pro I bought on the whim last year. Wait.. can it be true? A powerfully flexible freebsdish system (darwin) underneath a gui that is fast, efficient, and actually works?! Plus hardware that knock on wood in my luck rarely goes bad, plus rarely crashes unless it's a third party tool? Gasp and egads.
That is why Apple does not have to worry. I love linux. I love os X. Linux is making breakthroughs with desktop goals, but until they redo Xorg to not be the suck it can be, I will stick with my os X. As will most of the other linux / bsd geeks in my office who are mac converts (bout 6 of us overall, theres only roughly 10 admins besides myself that are technical).
It's not that they don't care. It's that for intents and purposes, it doesn't need to.

  • FLV quality looks better than F4V, what am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
I exported a small clip as a on2vp6 flv, a h.264 f4v, and a h.264 mp4 file with the adobe media encoder cs4. Each file is the same clip, exported with pretty much the same settings. Resolution: 640x480, 0.5mbps target bit rate, 29.97 fps.
Everything I read says that for a given file and a given bitrate, h.264 should provide better video quality when compared to a h.263 flv file. I would like to know what I am doing wrong, because the h.264 files look worse than the flv file. I have provided download links for a short demo clip in each format.

Why does the clip look better in h.263? It seems that everything I encode at low bitrates looks better in h.263 which leads me to believe I am doing something wrong.

Okay, that is true, they are different codecs. But even adobe says:
Q: How does H.264 compare with the current video formats supported in Flash Player?
A: Flash Player supports the Sorenson Spark video codec (based on H.263) and On2 VP6. H.263 is the predecessor of H.264 and was designed for teleconferencing applications, at 64k rates. H.264 delivers even higher quality at lower bitrates. H.264 will deliver the same or better quality when to compared to the same encoding profile in On2. Factors you should consider when choosing a format include the complexity of the content, the desired reach, ability to archive, and licensing considerations.

    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flash_Player:9:Update:H.264#Q:_What_is_H.264.3F
Are there any tricks to getting the h.264 to look "better" than the h.263? Like, the h.264 version of the video doesn't even look close to as good, and I think that the f4v version looks worse than the mp4, which I don't really understand since they are both h.264 files. The footage is from a canon XL2 and the original source is ntsc 720x480. Is there anything special I should be doing for encoding in h.264 instead of h.263. The video is going to be only for the web.

  • Editing in aperture is doing crazy things. I've read that it is memory leaks. Whats the cure?

Aperture is doing crazy things while editing like leaving spots on faces when using skin smoothing tool among other things. Closing and reopening fixes it but how annoying. I've read that it is caused from memory leaks. What do I do to fix this?

    What is your Aperture version?
    And your MacOS X version?
With Aperture 3 make sure you have the latest versions, Aperture 3.5.1 and OS 10.9.3.
The memory leaks you are referring to occurred with MacOS 10.9.1 and onscreen proofing enabled.
If yor versions are current, check your plug-ins for compatibility.

  • What am I doing wrong? Text looks BAD

What am I doing wrong here? Created a Motion opening sequence, and exported to movie with Animation as Compressor. Looks GREAT! Then import it into FCP6, and what ever I try, it looks REALLY BAD! I know it probably has to do with the compression I am using, but not sure what to choose! End result is for a DVD.
In iMovieHD(6), I can Export a video directly to iDVD and all looks great. Not sure if this is the problem I am experiencing in FCP? I can't just move it to iMovie, do to the number of cuts/length/video tracks involved, so any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Bill,
As was noted in your other thread, video is not simple. If you want simple, stay with iMovie. If you want control, well with great power comes great responsibility. And great responsibility requires continuous study.
DV is one crappy format. It compresses images 5:1 and works in a 4:1:1 color depth. All this means when you go to composite something (.eg text), it will likely look like crud.
One strategy is to increase the color depth in the sequence to 4:2:2. DVCPro50 or ProRes422 DV will do this. These codecs will not improve the original image, but will give a bit more breathing room for color in compositing.
    Good luck,
    x
