Looking for a better 1080i60 to 720p60 workflow??

Hey guys,
Need some good advice here.
Right now the material comes in to the network on hdcam at 1080i60
I digitize this footage at 1080i60 apple prores HQ- where the frame rate is 29.97
I then edit my promo using the 1080i (1080i60 sequence) setting.
here's my problem-->
the network wants these promo's at 720p59.94 for HD air.
What I've been doing is using quicktime comversion to make 720p60 proresHQ QT files
that I then bring to the network and layoff to dvcproHD.
compression type--apple prores HQ
frame rate--59.94 (no check next to interlaced)
size--1280x720HD (no check next to deinterlace source video)
This has worked up until I moved to FCP7.
When I export 1080i60 some of my _speed ramps_ stutter.
And this looks even worse when converted to 720p60
My question is....Am I doing this the right way?
Should I
1. keep doing what I've been doing
2. convert all the footage to 720p60 first
3. there's a better way and you guys know it!!
sorry its so long but i wanted to make sure I had all the details right.
Thanks
J-P

Hi,
you could be using a combination of Mobile Accounts (for the settings of the ibook) and rsync (which is installed by default on 10.3 and 10.4), check man rsync for more info.

  • Looking for a better heatsink help....K8N NEO2

    Im looking for a better heatsink....any suggestions? I may oc it but for now I wont....it idles at 40-41 and stays at 60 when im gaming 58 if i turn off cool n quiet.....and thats with some ocz ultra5 Thermal compund....ThX

    Yes, agree with SAB, zalman 7000 is a good one, however I´ve got 2 very simular K8N Neo2-systems but with 2 different cpu coolers.
    One with zalman 7000alcu and one with Thermalright XP-90 and a zalman 92mm fan ( you can use what ever 80/92mm fan you like high speed, low speed, led colored, etc).
    Both are equal regarding cooling to my experience, but I prefered the XP-90 because I did not have to remove the backplate ( I think zalman recommends mounting it´s own backplate to get the right distance/pressure between the cooler and cpu ).
    With the XP-90 you just switch the retension mechanism which is easy ( even with the MoBo in the case ).

  • Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.

    Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.
    All my material is rendered via RenderMan, our resolution is 1280x544, and our format is generally .exr in 32 bit space.
    Our editor has been converting over to 32-bit tiffs, and using Apple Intermediate Codec for editing, mostly for speed concerns.
    We need to re-vamp our workflow so that we can edit our footage, and then do color grading of the edit head to tail to smooth the look between scenes. We want to do this in Color, being fed by Final Cut Pro's timeline.
    We want to keep our bit depth as high as possible when coming into Color.
    My question is, does anyone here have any workflow suggestions for doing what I am talking about.
    I wasn't sure if we should just export and EDL from FCP and try to get Color to load our single frames from that. Or if there is a special Quicktime wrapper we should be using, or converting our 32-bit .exr files into some other format more readily available for using in Color?
    Any thoughts would be great, thanks in advance!

    You're not going to get anywhere beyond 10-bit. That's it.
    Try encoding to 10-bit LOG dpx if you need upscale RGB.

  • Looking for a better resource to get a handle on using effects in after effects (CS6 BTW)

    Hello thanks for looking in,
    I would like to get better control over Zooming. The Zooming I found in AE did not function when
    dragged it into my effects controller...Is the only Zoom control really the "Scale" as found in Prem-Pro?
    I could not find it in AE. I wanted to zoom over the shoulder of my actor and concentrate on what my Actor is looking at/pointing at. I could not find where that effect is at in AE.
    If you know of a couple good tutorials to watch that show how to control the effecst in After-Effects it would be welcomed and appreciated. If you know the specific path to use to pan and
    zoom for my desired shot mentioned, that too would be appreciated. One other ? I skimmed through "Creative Cow" but there are many videos and after watching a couple that were titled what
    I want, were not what I was looking for. Spent an hour plus surfing before I came here to ask.
    Are some of the effects only applicable to one or the other? IE: Movies or stills? If so is there a
    manual that states what can be used with what? I tried dragging some of the effects into my effects area and they would not populate. IE: Zoom Forward. Only used for Text?
    Thanks for your time with this in advance.

  • Looking for a better way to backup end users

    Hello there.
    Not sure if this the best forum for this post but here goes.
    Last week my company had a break in and a couple of laptops got lifted. Not a big deal as I had backups of the machines on tape. It did take a while to recover the files though. During that time I got to thinking about a better way to backup and I am looking for any ideas of if this would work or not.
    First quick overview. About 60 end users majority with laptops.
    What I am thinking of doing is this. Take an xServe RAID configured in RAID 5, for redundancy and speed, and creating a shared folder on it for each of my end users. This way if they need to retrieve a file they can log in and will not have to call me. Then, this is where I need help, use some tool to copy all of their files at specified intervals into their folder, at least once a day. I am currently using Retrospect to backup everyone directly to tape and I could use that to do this but the only thing I do not like about Retrospect is it can only do one user at a time. With 60 users I have to start it pretty early in the day. I know copy files would be alot faster so I am not ruling it out. I was also thinking about using ChronoSync to accomplish this and then use Retrospect to backup the RAID to tape for long term storage. I am ruling out using Home directories on the xServe for my users because they are all laptops and are usually out of the office at least one day a week.
    If anyone could offer some ideas of whether or not this is going to work or not or if you have other suggestions, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Looking for a beta tester

    I'm putting the final touches on my next app. I'd love to get another set of eyes to help me go over the app. So I'm looking for a volunteer to help me test the heck out of my app.
    In return I will offer my time to help either the same person with their app (testing, not writing) or the app of someone else. Kind of a Pay-It-Forward idea.
    So if you are seriously interested and have the time this week or next to help me out please contact me at:
    rmaddy followed by the circled A then G mail company suffix.
    Ideally the willing person will look for bugs as well as offer suggestions on usability, and the like.
    And I'm looking for an person who does not develop iPhone apps professionally, but on their own time. No NDA required but I'd like to keep the app details between me and the other person until it's released.
    Thanks.

    Honestly I wouldn't spend too much trying to upgrade your computer. It has an aging dual core Athlon processor, and only 2GB of RAM. Even with the highest top of the line card, with that CPU/RAM setup, your computer is probably going to struggle to run it.

  • Looking for a better setup!

    Hi all --
    For the last year, I have run a successful, professional-sounding podcast using the combination of a Dell Inspiron laptop, some free software, and a host of mixers, microphones and phone couplers. Recently, however, this laptop started having issues, and I decided to pull the trigger on a MacBook Pro. Now, I find myself in the position of slowly migrating my recording operations over to the Mac, and I was hoping someone could help me mimic or improve my current process. I feel like -- OK, I know -- I'm going through some extra steps right now; switching machines gives me the chance to modify my process.
    (Recording equipment being used: Shure SM7B mic, plugged into an Alesis 8USB Multimix, plugged into my laptop using USB.)
    Current process after equipment is plugged in:
    1) Record / edit raw audio using Goldwave
    2) Export edited WAV file and run through Levelator to balance out sound levels
    3) Take Levelator output into Audacity, where I mix it with other audio (intro, outtro, other bumpers); export as WAV (I'd export as MP3, but for some reason, the MP3 doesn't sound right)
    4) Take exported WAV back into Goldwave and save as MP3 (32 kbps / 22.1 kHz)
    5) Take MP3 into iTunes to add titles and artwork
    6) Upload to my server and update my RSS feed
    I'm not looking to swap out any equipment, just wondering how I could duplicate or improve upon this current process using my new Mac. Any and all suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks in advance!

    I have the same Alesis, and I was pretty disgusted with the hiss level on the mic input, using a moving-coil (I use an external mic preamp): I'm not familiar with the Shure model you have, but if it's a capacitor using the phantom power input this probably isn't going to be an issue. There's also the mysterious Alesis 'whine' when using USB - I don't connect it this way for this reason, I use an Edirol interface.
    If you're interested you can assess the resultant quality here. My mic is a Beyer M3, bought around 28 years ago.
    If you're happy with the results from your setup I shouldn't tamper with it. However I would suggest that 32kb/s is a pretty low bitrate, and bound to produce artefacts. Mine is 96kb/s mono, equivalent to 192kb/s stereo, though I would think that 128kb/s would be OK. You might try doing extracts at different bitrates - it's always a compromise between quality and file size. Your sampling rate is limiting your frequency response to around 9 or 10kHz, which is fine for speech or music on small speakers: 44.1kHz would give you a full response to 20kHz but of course the file sizes are bigger.
    I'm not familiar with GoldWave; I'm not a fan of Audacity: free is nice, but I found it clunky to use and at that time none too stable - it may be better now. I use Amadeus Pro - you should be able to do everything right down to the MP3 conversion in that, though you would have to use iTunes or MP3 IDX for that (I prefer the latter but it's $18 where iTunes is free).
    For making the podcast and the feed I use Podcast Maker - it takes you MP3s and can turn them into M4as with chapters and images, and writes a nice clean feed (unlike certain online services).

  • Looking for a better calandar app

    Hi, does anybody know of a decent calendar app that I could download onto my Nokia Lumia 800?
    I need something with a larger font, and with more customisable features than the standard calendar.
    I'm not interested in an online calendar (e.g. Google), and I also woudln't want anything that sends you adverts everytime you use it.
    Thanks.

    Thanks, I've just checked these out.
    Unfortunately, can't find anything suitable in this collection. Many of the apps are simply bolt-ons for the standard calendar. Some are religious calendars. One or two that looked promising had similar problems to the standard calendar. and both sent me a constant stream of adverts while the calendar was open.
    You'd have thought someone would have created a suitable alternative to improve on the original by now...?

  • Looking for a better design: how to populate db result to object with lists

    I have a query that returns from the db an arrayList of class CarBean:
    carID, model, color, rentUserID, fname, lname, dateRentStart, dateRentEndThe query is with reference to a particular car that N people (rentUserID) rented and the user (the system user) wish to know how many rentals were made for this carID.
    I wish to populate the result into ONE class name CarRental which looks like this:
    private Car; //model
    private List<RentUser> rentals; //all info relating to rentUserso, my question is this, what creative way (Design Pattern, maybe?) is there to populate all the objects (CarBean) from the arrayList into CarRental?
    In my solution I'm doing something like this:
    Iterator<CarBean> itr = list.iterator();
    CarRental carRental = new CarRental();
    List rentals = new ArrayList();
    while (itr.hasNext())
        CarBean cb = itr.next();
        carRental.setCarID(cb.getCarID);
        //for the list of users:
       User u = new User();
       u.setUserID(cb.getUserID());
       rentals.add(u);
    carRental.setRentals(rentals);* please consider a more complicated query that the end result of ONE object should have X arrayList and other M objects in it
    thank you!

    Just to make sure I understand, here's a simple version of your question. Please correct anything I have wrong.
    Your design will have two classes: Car and Renter. A Renter is a Person who rents a Car on a given day:
    package model;
    public class Renter implements Serializable
        private Long id;
        private String name;
        private Address address;
        // Details left for you.
    }You'll also have a Car:
    package model;
    public class Car implements Serializable
        private Long id;
        private String make;
        private String model;
        private int year;
        // Details left for you.
    }It sounds like you want to have a one-to-many relationship between Car and Renter. I think you have a couple of choices:
    You can embed a List<Renter> as a data member inside the Car class, or
    You can encapsulate the relationship between a Car and a Renter in a separate class like a Contract.
    I kinda like the second option because it reifies a nice concept.
    As far as the database goes, I'd recommend following an idiom from Spring- their RowMapper interface:
    package persistence;
    public interface RowMapper
        Object map(ResultSet rs);
    }Encapsulate the mapping from ResultSets to Objects that way.
    Or use Hibernate, TopLink, or another ORM tool.

  • Looking for a Better Search Solution

    One of my company's products has a large number of
    configuration options that we purposefully don't include in the
    regular online help. We have been providing a separate PDF of the
    settings, but we are now switching to an online help format (a
    separate help file) for this information. We want it to be easy for
    users to download/install, so we were planning to use the CHM
    format, so there would just be a single file for them to download
    and open. We are using RoboHelp HTML v7 to generate the help. We
    use Dreamweaver as our HTML editor. We will be updating this new
    help system about once/month.
    [Note: Because of the nature of the information in this help
    system, indexing--while often better for help systems--is not
    practical in this case; we must use the Search feature.]
    As we were testing the new format, we noticed that the
    results on the Search tab were not what we were hoping for. If we
    searched on "auto," it would find "[Auto Release]" or "auto-run,"
    it would not find "AutoComments." This is not ideal for what we
    want. We even cleared the lists of Stop Words and Ignore Phrases,
    to no avail.
    Webhelp does search better, but we found that it would find
    "[Autocomment]" but not "[AutoCap]." That is likely because of the
    mid-word capitalization, but it's part of our program, and we can't
    change it. This led us to Peter Grainge's website and the
    ZoomSearch program for use with Webhelp. This search does work a
    lot better (thanks!). However, we don't want our users to have to
    deal with multiple files. We investigated Adobe AIR, which does do
    a nice job packaging the webhelp files, but it seems to only
    acknowledge RoboHelp's Search feature; it disregards the manually
    made ZoomSearch button and behavior, so we can't package and
    deliver the Webhelp that way. Our next idea was to use
    InstallShield to handle installing/updating the files and creating
    a shortcut on the desktop.
    Before that, though, does anyone have any suggestions for
    working around the CHM search limitations? Or do you have any other
    ideas to make Webhelp easier to distribute that we haven't stumbled
    upon yet?
    Thanks!

    If you can educate your users to add wildcards to their
    search terms, they can find all the words that you provided as
    examples in your message. For example, searching for
    auto* will find
    AutoComments,
    [Auto Release],
    [AutoCap],
    auto-run, and
    [Autocomment].

  • Looking for a better solution to the "Save for web" color shift issue

    Ok, everyone who has fussed much with photoshop and "Save For Web" knows about the color shift issue. If you want your colors to look right after you "save for web", you have to work in the sRGB colorspace, and have Proof Colors checked (soft proofing on) and the proof color setup set to Monitor RGB, otherwise what you get looks terrible when displayed in a browser.
    But of course if you are editing for print, this is exactly what you DON'T want to do. Well, I work in both. In fact, often the same images, and I want them to appear as close as reasonably possible in both print and web formats, and without a lot of fussing on my part. And I'm pickiest about the print mode, since I have the most control there, so that's the way I want to edit by default.
    Nothing new here.
    Now comes the interesting part (in my mind, anyway). Obviously there is a known remapping -- because PhotoShop DOES it when you select Proof Colors. So the inverse mapping must also be known (with some gamut issues, but I'm not concerned with those, because, after all, I'm VIEWING it on a monitor anyway!). What I want is a plug-in that automatically applies that inverse mapping so that, when I do a Save For Web, I end up with the colors I've been viewing all the time when setting the shot up in print mode. Then, too, I don't have to worry about what mode I'm in when I'm editing -- it just fixes it when doing a save-for-web.
    Again, I want to edit in my normal print mode (typically ProPhoto colorspace, and with soft-proofing off or set to the printer/medium combination I expect to use), then do a single operation (might be a multi-step action) to "screw up" my colors so that when I then do a "Save-For-Web", the resulting image, when viewed on the average color-stupid browser, looks like the image I've been seeing in Photoshop.
    Anyone know of such a beast?   I would gladly pay for a plug-in that really works and fixes the problem.
    And if you have other solutions, I'm interested, but the absolute requirement is that it I do one single edit pass for my colors for both print and web use, and I get what I see on the screen in PS on both the prints and on the web display (i.e., working in sRGB/Monitor RGB mode all the time won't cut it). And PREFERABLY, let me do all my editing work in the ProPhoto (or at least AdobeRGB) colorspace so I have a gamut closer to what the printer can do.
    Anyone got a decent solution for this?

    Chris
    I spent all day Googling and doing side by side comparisons of my old and new systems.
    My display is a Dell U2410. It has several presets, including sRGB and Adobe RGB. I've been using sRGB.
    On my OLD system, (Win XP, PsCS2, DwCS4) there seems to be no distinction between color managed and non color managed apps, even on this wide gamut display. I could capture (digital camera) in Adobe RGB, open and edit in PsCS2, save as .psd, convert to CMYK for print, or convert to sRGB for SFW. All images looked identical and they printed and displayed perfectly. I thought this was normal, and seemed logical. This also seems to be the source of my incorrect assumptions. I was trying to get my new machine to behave like my old one.
    So I get this new machine (Windows 7, PsCS5, DwCS5) and now (still in sRGB display mode) all color managed apps appear de-saturated. Non color managed apps are OK. If I switch the display to Adobe RGB, color managed apps are OK, but non color managed apps are way too saturated. From my investigation, I believe this is normal behavior on a wide gamut display. I've tried changing the Control Panel > Display > Screen Resolution > Advanced settings > Color Management options, but to no avail. Either I'm missing something, or Windows 7 is doing color management differently.
    It seems my only option now is to use Adobe RGB display setting for Ps, etc. and switch to sRGB for Dw and non color managed apps. Or, have 2 separate files for print and web. I've Googled 'til my eyes are numb and still not sure I'm getting this. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.
    Finally, I don't see an edit function here, so I can't remove my previous incorrect reply. Moderator, please feel free to do so.
    Thanks

  • Looking for a better photo view program

    Hi there,
    I changed from windows to a Mac for my photo work and artwork. I use my high resolution photos to draw and capture portraits for my clients. I am dissapointed to find out that preview only allows me to zoom at set percentages. like 25,50,75 and 100 for example.  So the picture ends up to small or way to big. Some of my work may need to me say 30 or 35 for example. I use to be able to zoom with windows by sliding a bar across the bottom of the view, this way it goes just 1% at a time and I can make it the exact size I need. This is so important for me as the porporations of my photo has to be the exact same size as my art piece to look right. Any suggestions for a program that zooms like windows?
    thanks

    iPhoto doesn't do what you want either?

  • Looking for a (better) import solution

    Hi All-
    I have had aperture for a while now, but haven't actually gotten around to using it too much (I had hoped that my wife would adapt, but hasn't, she is still using iPhoto).
    I was hoping that someone could recommend a method for importing that would fit my situation-
    Here is what i would like to do (two computers in the mix here, my wife's iMac, in the kitchen, and my mac pro, in my home office)
    Note that import will always be done on the imac (that's just how it is...)
    When we put in the memory card, I want it to:
    1. import to a directory (this will most likely be a network drive, but that probably doesn't matter)
    (here it would be nice if it were to store them in a nice date structure)
    2. Kick off the import to iPhoto
    (I don't care if it just hands the process off to iPhoto- I just want an off-machine store of the un-altered images).
    This would allow ME to import from the network drive the originals, and do with them as I need.
    I would also like it to ignore the iPhones (it is ok if that still syncs JUST with iPhoto).
    I think that I can figure out the rest.
    Thanks,
    -jamie

    Given iPhoto and Aperture are scriptable, you might want to look into creating a little application with Automator that does this.

    We're getting ready to buy our new iMacs, which we'll buy here, but we thought of buying the Airport Extreme in the US next month while we're there (it's cheaper). Does it automatically switch from 110v to 220v or do we have to buy it here? (Israel)
