  • Looking for a great case

Hey, I am looking for a great case that will fit my 15in MBP, one that will not only protect it if it falls, but functions like a brief case, I want a place to put pens and documents, this does not mean it has to look like a breifcase. I just want a really professional looking case that is semi tough. Any ideas?

  • Looking for intermediate course in Flash

I'm looking for good self-paced training in Flash, geared toward the intermediate Flash developer with emphasis on development / ActionScript (over art/animation).  Something comprehensive with "best practices" and such.  I see the video-based tutorials like lynda.com and total training - but am wondering if there is anything more comprehensive and more like an "online course" with assignments, testing, etc.  I see that Adobe offers a downloadable "training library" from elementk but I see no indication of what it really is -- is it just a bunch of material you download and read or are their "courses" more interactive?  Anybody have experience with these?  Advice appreciated.  Thanks!

    lynda.com is what i use.
i have no affiliation just a loyal user.

  • Looking for a GREAT mini DVD Camcorder that is compatible with my MAC! :-)

Ok. Here it is: I have a Sony DCR-TRV350 Camcorder, which I LOVE. However, the DVI port on the camera is screwed up. I bought a new DVI firewire, alas, to no avail. I cannot get the information from the camera to my Mac. So, making my fun, goofy movies is being inhibited by a fix, that will cost nearly as much as a new camera. I am looking for a new camera, that takes advantage of the firewire port on the Mac. Any suggestions? I would prefer a Sony. I am looking for advice from someone who knows, better then I, (that should be easy) of a good camcorder (miniDVD?) that works well with a Mac. I just want to have fun, bringing in footage to iMovie HD, editing, and posting them to Metacafe. Any and all input is, of course greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!
    ~ George

"..I wish Apple would tell me "why" a standard MiniDVD camcorder would not be compatible with I-Movie, because I can not think of a single logical reason.."
iMovie was designed to work with "DV" digital camcorders. These were, and are, camcorders which record video in a particular method onto DV, or miniDV, tape. iMovie wasn't designed to import or edit analogue 8mm or Hi-8 recordings, so it won't. iMovie can't handle an incoming analogue (non-digital) signal. (..But if you put one of those 8mm or Hi-8 analogue tapes in a Digital-8 camcorder such as the Sony DCR-TRV350, mentioned in the very first post, above, you can then import it as a digital signal through the camcorder's FireWire connection..)
Various other digital recording methods came and went, and Apple have supported some, but not others: there was the short-lived Sony "microMV" tape format which Apple didn't support, although you can handle that with MPEG Streamclip. Then there was HDV, which Apple does support ..but they did that by creating an Apple Intermediate Codec, into which the MPEG-2 video format of HDV tape gets converted during import.
Then there were various MPEG-2 DVD video formats, and the various movie formats used by solid-state memory-chip camcorders. Now there's AVCHD format, for memory chips, hard drives and DVDs.
These methods of recording video just keep multiplying - because the camcorder manufacturers want to offer "Look! Ours-does-it-better!" claims. But just because they produce a camcorder which records video, that doesn't mean that Apple (which doesn't make camcorders) has to provide a means to edit all these weird formats which keep springing up. Surely, the camcorder manufacturers should be providing Mac-compatible, or iMovie-compatible, editing methods for their devices, shouldn't they?
As Thomas mentions, there's a list of some compatible camcorders (see above) ..but that's a list of camcorders which are compatible with the latest iMovie '08 (..which can deal with some DVD camcorders, but not those which record DVDs in AVCHD format..) and AVCHD format can be handled only by Intel-based Macs, anyway.
So for an MPEG-2-based mini-DVD camcorder and iMovie HD 6, copy the files into your Mac, and then use MPEG Streamclip to convert them to iMovie HD 6 compatibility.
For iMovie '08, some miniDVD camcorders are compatible (those using MPEG-2 recording). For DVD camcorders using AVCHD recording, you may have to copy the recordings onto your Mac, and then download and use "Voltaic" to convert the recordings into iMovie-editable format.
"..I can not think of a single logical reason.." ..the reason is that manufacturers just want you to buy these cameras. But they don't give a hoot that you can't edit the material they record, and so it's left to Apple, and other software developers, to try to devise some way to "unravel" the compressed recordings for you, and make them editable.

  • Looking for a great semi-pro vocal mic

    hey-
I'm looking for an excellent semi-pro vocal mic. willing to spend up to $600-700. Right now I've got my eye on the SE Electronics Z3300A, which looks to be an excellent choice, but i'm open to suggestions.
I'm not particularly looking for personal favorites... I'm looking for tried and true industry vocal mics that deliver under any situation, and always produce excellent tone, good warmth and presence without being too abrasive.
    thanks!
    chris

If you can pump your budget up just a smidge, the AKG 414 is an industry standard condensor mic that sounds great on just about everything, including vocals. It has a very clear vivid sound, and you'll find it takes care of lots of condensor mic needs really well. I've seen it in most studios, it also sounds great as a room mic, distant amp mic, even nice as a kick mic
It doesn't have the warmth and character of more expensive vocal mics, like Neumanns, but cheaper-priced condensors sometimes have too much dark character for me. This would keep your tracks more on the clear and pro side.
    Zzounds sells it for $900.
Don't know where you live, but in NYC B&H Photo Video used to have a room where you could test out microphones. Really best to get your mouth in front of a bunch of options to find the right one.

The application is working fine when i'm Running the application right from the Flex Builder. But when i Build the relase and create a AIR application and install it. It does not seem to work. I guess i'm missing how to send in the userid and password to the webservice.

    WELL !

  • I'm looking for a great sounding FireWire Audio/midi interface.....

Does anyone have experience with the
Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Audio Interface and Logic 7 ?
I'm hoping to get the very best i can for around $700.
Some reviews i've read say that the sound is some of the best
around. (for the price) Namely, the mic pre.
I need simple but great/reliable midi... i simply need to send my midi controller into Logic, so the simple in/out seems fine for me.
Is it reliable and good with Logic ?

    Hey man.
I've tested many of the mid range interfaces including the Onyx 400f. In terms of sound quality I would say the Onyx is the best and reprasents new standards in terms of audio quality at that price point. The pres smoke everything else i've tried (except outboard pres of course). The converters sound highly musical. I prefer them to the sound of higher specced units. BUT! Stability has been a major problem for this unit. Check the Mackie forums under Support on the Mackie website. Its full of horror stories. From high pitched whines, to clicks and pops to phantom power issues latency. Apparently some defective units were released.
I'm currently trying to get hold of one that works, cause I need that sound! But, it's not easy. I've hired two and both had issues, but sounded killer- dow! Anyway another problem is I don't think they have intel drivers yet.
Here are the ones I tested in my preffered order.
    1. Onyx 400f
    2. Metric Halo ULN-2
    3. RME FF 400/800
    4. Presonus firepod/ firebox
    5. MOTU Traveler
    Hope this helps. Cheers.

  • Looking for a great NAS for $200

I'm looking to either get the buffalo tech linkstation pro, pro duo. Any ideas if that's good or some other nas product for generic usage at home. Movies etc music n all that for $200 range.

Found this at the Walmart site - I guess that it does come with drives... I would have to know what brand of drives ship with the unit before buying anything, though, as the price just seems a little too good to have decent drives in it. I paid almost $600 for my LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 4TB drive system. I could have purchased a FireWire 800 system for less than one-half of that, but I wanted the speed of Thunderbolt technology.
If I were you, I would find out what drives are used in the unit - then make a purchasing decision.

  • Children's Start-up Looking for Flash Site Designer

New Los Angeles based children's media start-up is looking
for a creative independant Flash website developer. Please send
links to [email protected] or post them in this forum. This
project needs to be completed by 12/31/06.
    Thank you,
    David

    Hi Hugh
Rather than attempting to find those files, I suggest you lock the Shared Object folder. This precludes any Flash cookie info from being written to your HD.
To do so, go to the Finder and navigate to the Macromedia folder - Your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. Continue drilling down to the Shared Objects folder. Now, simply move to the trash the contents of the Shared Objects folder. Once the folder is empty, click on the Shared Objects folder, Command/I to open its Info panel and click on the Locked option, then close the panel.
From here on out, no information will be written to that file. I did this awhile ago and have not had any adverse effect from locking the folder.
