Looking for a usable GUI Designer/Container...

Hi all.
Since a while, I'm looking for an integrated environment to develop and execute Java/Swing GUI and it seems it's not possible to find such a thing...
I explain : we are developping lots of J2EE applications hosted in a well known Application Server, and for what concern server, we can find 'on the shelf' almost all we need. Thus, using Session Beans, EJB3, Spring (...), it's pretty comfortable to build professional applications.
But generally speeking, these applications have a graphical part, and at this point, things become more complicated. For years, we have been using only Java, for both server and client part (Swing, even in its firsts versions... souvenirs...). But even after 10 years of Java, it seems that it is still not possible to find a tool in which we can design, test, deploy and execute our GUIs.
Since Matisse appeared, it is a little bit easier to design panels (but not so trivial... JFormDesigner has released a beta version supporting the GroupLayout : still lots of bugs) but for what concern, let's say, the 'GUI Container' part, it seems that market/open source has no answer. I tried Netbeans RCP (and also Eclipse...), but these containers have been thought for IDE, and concepts are not easy to map on a standard GUI. Moreover, these containers are huge and not so easy to understand, so very often, the decision to build full custom applications is taken, re-writing for the 1000th time the main window, the menubar/toolbar management, the MDI controller (using sometime a docking framework), ... Thus, the cost of the development and the baseline is high, and of course, our clients are dissatisfied.
Recently, a new way of developping applications appeared : server part is developped using Java/J2EE, and the client side (fat client) is made using .Net. Interop between client and server leans on WebServices or binary interop (JIntegra).
I'm totally convinced that this kind of architecture is a mistake, but it's more and more difficult to defend Java on the client side. C# tools seem to be easier to use, more productive, ...
So my question is : what are your opinions/experiences on this subject? Have you found "the magic tool", "the magic framework", ... that make of Java/Swing a good challenger for desktop developments... or do you think that the game is over, and that Microsoft .Net has definitively won the client?

I believe it is not about winning and lossing. Its about learning. By the way, let me mention that God who is the mastermind of all variations is a God of diversity. Every diverse expression of whatever kind is a reflection and coextension of its maker -and that means that even you are a coextension of Himself.
Perhaps, if you are really looking for a tool that would satisfy your demands or desires along with Java, isnt it not logical to say that... or shall I say "perhaps" God is leading you into that new expression of diversity -a diversity that will challenge the whole creation? I dont blame others with what I cant do for myself.

If the clients lost patience. Make them understand how complex it is to make a java application. They will appreciate your wisdom.

Thanks for the reply, I have another question you might be able to answer.
I have a picture field (blob field) on the same line as our Product ID field (regular data field) and i want the report to show the picture that goes with that Product ID. 50% of our products dont have pictures, so when I print the report, it currently prints large empty spaces for the Products that dont have pictures and makes the report quite long and unattractive.
I have tried to supress the field and also put the field in its own section and use a formula for supressing if the data is blank, but I get the error message that says "Can not use a BLOB field in a formula".
I need to find a way around this. Can you, or any of your experts help?
I could send you the report with some data in it if that would help.

Looking for Motion 5 template designer ?

I am in desperate need of someone who can design a FCPX/Motion5 template for a community TV show.
I need a F1/NASCAR style results list with:
POS: DRIVER: CAR: TIME
Up to 10 lines on a 1080 screen 25p.
I have tried to make one myself but I don't have the time to learn Motion as I'm up to my neck in 40 hours of editing a week.
I know lots of AE designers but I want to use it in FCP X and 'll be using it 20-30 times a week.
If anybody knows if such a template already exists or if anybody knows where I can find someone to build one them I'd love to know.

I'd like to help, but I don't know a thing about formula 1 or nascar, notwithstanding the fact that I do live in the deep south. I am a transplanted, dyed in the wool... yankee... (yikes). Looking for a good GUI builder

Hello,
I'm beginning a huge software project that invloves multiple JFrames. I am having difficulties finding a GUI builder that will allow me to place objects on a frame and emit code to support that frame. I do not want to have to try 5 before I find one I like that works. I was hoping that the expereinced ones could point me in the right direction. Will NetBeans work? I prefer OpenSource solutions but commercial ones will work too.

Frames and panels are just types of containers. JPanel is a very generic container that doesn't do anything besides... contain stuff. :-) JFrame and the like are specialized higher level containers. When at all possible (read always) layout your gui components in a generic container, then you are free to put them in whatever specialized container you want later. JFrame, JDialog, JInternalFrame, etc. If you hard-wire them into a JFrame from the very beginning, you are really limiting your ability to change things around later.
Also, do not follow the current lazy wisdom of extending JFrames and JPanels to lay stuff out (beware, IDEs lead you down this deadend path). That is just very bad programming practice and will come to bite you eventually. You don't extend JButton to set the label do you? No... so don't extend JFrame or JPanel just to layout it's contents. Only extend an object if you are going to generally extend it's functionality... extending an object just to change it's params is wacky imho. I can't remember where this practice got started (lots of people do it), but I would like to smack that person. :-)

Hello! I'm looking for a Flash Coder/Designer to Create Quantity of 5 Flash Animations which pull dynamic text from a XML File.

The 2 types of animations we require are, one that will display dynamic polling information, the other will be text scrolling horizontally and vertically in a smooth manor.
The selected designer will receive the .XML Files which the action script will pull the information from.
We would like the following animations:
1) Every time a new Text is added to the external XML file, that text is "SMACKED" on the screen, tiny from the distance to big on the screen, it will streak down the screen until it disappears off the bottom of the screen, this will be in a random manor, the text will have rotation angles of 140degrees. The font can be changed easily, as well as the background graphic. It should also contain a holder for a logo in the lower right hand corner which will jiggle whenever a new TEXT is detected.
2) Every time a new Text is added to the external XML file, it will jump up from the lower part of the screen and stop at the top of the screen, every time a new text comes in, it will stack below that, bumping the top one up. This will happen infinitely. There should be a holder for a logo in the lower right hand corner, this logo should Blink everytime a new text is detected.
3) Every time a new Text is detected is should scroll from right to left. In between each new text, a logo should scroll with the text. This scroll should easily be able to switch from right to left, and with logo and no logo.
4) If possible to create a 3D effect, the actual REAL 3D effect that people use to watch with those RED and BLUE glasses. This text would fly in from the far distance and appear big on the screen, it should use Depth of field so the text appear to be flying out of the screen.
5) Voting Poll Animation, should match the examples given in the URL.

What to look for in a good quality font?

What are some things to look for in a well designed paid or free font? How do I know if it will print nicely? What can I look for after typing some text in Photoshop or Illustrator to ensure that it is high enough quality for printing?

For print, 300 ppi is actually considered low resolution. High resolution is something about 2400 ppi and up. The average desktop laser printers you can buy today will do 600 ppi, and the high end desktop laser printers will go up to 1200 (sometimes even more).
On the other hand, 300 ppi is currently considered high resolution for a screen. The iPhone 4 for example, has 326 ppi, which is pretty high for a device of that size. In the coming years we will likely see tablet devices match up that resolution (the iPad first gen. has 132 ppi) and probably even surpass it.

ah sorry, my intention was never to start a silly flame war. I am going to spend some time trying out tiling WM's other than Xmonad, It's kind of annoying since I'm forced to use win7 at work, and the contrast between work->home is quite large.
If you like tiling, try the "plug.n" autohotkey script/app on your work windows box. Does a very good job - or at least as good as is possible.
There is a limitation if you need to use stuff like VMs. But this is getting a bit OT, so i'll leave it at that .

Have you tried a safe start by holding the shift key when you boot? If that works, and it can take a while to complete, see if a regular boot now works. If it does, you need to free up space on your hard drive.
If a safe boot doesn't work, you need to either boot from an OS X DVD or go into target disk mode to connect via firewire cable to another mac to free up space on your hard drive. You need 5GB min, with 10% to 15%, or more, better, for systems usage. If you have a backup, move some data files to it, erase them and empty the trash.

Is it possible since the way to get access to the memory card depends on the underlying OS. I know that the really defrag or format action is OS-independent, but filesystem type dependent.

These are system level, platform dependent actions and not the sort of thing Java is made for. If you search hard enough (read Google) you may find these types of tools using JNI for specific platforms, but I wouldn't count on it.

The direct approach--finding the text first and then figuring out whether it's a valid match--won't work. Java supports two other kinds of comment plus string literals, any of which could contain the text you're looking for. Also, comments can contain literals, string literals can contain things that look like comments, even char literals can contain quotation marks.
