Looking for an E-Reader

I run a book review blog, and while I don't usually review e-books, I've noticed that most of my review requests (from authors or independent publishers) are offering digital only. In the past I've used free programs such as Kindle for PC and Adobe Digital Editions. I tend to prefer the Kindle program, but it doesn't accept all formats (PDF), so I'm stuck with either a converted mess or using Adobe for some books. But I've decided it's time for a change - it's time for an e-reader. Honestly, I'm kinda leaning towards a Kindle at the moment. I've used the PC software for about a year now, and other than the PDF issues (which I don't know if there's a better option) I don't have any huge problems. I already have a lot of free books downloaded, and I'm sure I'll run across other freebees regularly. Plus my library already offers a large selection of e-books in the Kindle format! So here's my checklist: - Price - Not able to spend tons right now. - Weight/Size - Not a huge issue for me, actually. - Ease-of-Use - I'm pretty tech-savvy, so unless it's a nightmare to use, I should be fine. - Loyalty/Format - I'm not really loyal to one company over another. But when it comes to formats, how much of a pain is it going to be getting the right book format? - Memory - I'm not planning on replacing my library, this will be primarily for review requests that aren't available in print. - Touch or Not? - Is touch worth it for ease? Or is it a stress headache waiting to happen if it gets scratched? - Durability - Along the same lines as above, I'm pretty careful with my things and I'm not typically clutzy, but will I need a force-field around this thing? - Gadgets - I don't need tons of bells and whistles, but I won't turn them down either. Not really looking at 3G, video, or net-browsing, though music might be a plus... - Extras - Do I need to budget in for extras to get full use out of this? I don't foresee a need for an adapter, but will I need/want a case, light, etc.? Any help?

To be honest, you are better off using a computer and this software:
http://calibre-ebook.com/
It will convert ebook formats...if you buy a reader, you are committed to that environment.  WIth the above and a computer, you can install the PC version of your favorite ereader and use the software to convert other formats to it.

  • Looking for a pdf reader which meets these requirements

I am looking for a pdf reader which meets these requirements:
1- Open pdf starting from last page opened during last session
2- Be able to scroll between pages vertically (not horizontally like many current ones do). Vertical scroll should be a continuous smooth scroll without doing a sudden full page pull in. Should behave as if pdf is one single very long page.
3- Should be able to change width of page and lock it. Page should not move sideways. Page width should be remembered so when same pdf is opened, it opens in that width.
4- A fast scroll feature. Useful for pdf's with hundreds of pages.
5- Nice to have feature: when opening the pdf reader, it automatically opens the last pdf file on the last page read.
I have tried all the free pdf readers in the AppStore and none met all these requirements except for two which had these issues:
1- iRead limitation: When screen is touched for more than a second, the page is frozen (locked) and page can't be scrolled. Scrolling is done when doing quick swipes only
2- FileApp limitation: Does not remember last page opened. Does not remember last width set. Fast scroll doesn't work properly when width is other than default.

    iAnnotate additional points
iAnnotate works with DropBox to download and upload edited PDFs. It does all the other same things, email, USB, and iTunes etc. but it also can download PDFs from any web site.
You can transfer hundreds if not thousands of files at one whack using the AIJ Utility on your desktop.
If you transfer a large number of files you have to plan not to use iAnnotate a while as it has an index function that indexes all the text into a master 'dictionary' so it can do searches for data and find PDFs for you. This indexing takes hours if you transfer hundreds of moderate size PDFs at one time.
The biggest PDF I have feed it was a Gimp manual at close to a thousand pages.
Remember the scratch pad ram is only 256 MB in the current iPad. You can cash iAnnotate if you do something really dumb with such a large file. Other applications also grab and hold onto chunks of this ram in the iPad so it is best to force a memory reset before doing anything that is going to max out that ram.
iAnnotate allows you to have more than one PDF open at a time and you can tab between all the open PDFs in a blink just as you would in a tabbed web browser.
If you zoom a page larger than the width of the screen it slides around. Less than the width of the screen the page locks in the size while scrolling which is smooth between pages.
iAnnotate is a very well made product for dealing with PDFs. Annotations display in Goodreader and in the Mac OS Preview.

You may also not want to shout (large bold print) when you go to the Reader forum. It irritates a lot of folks and may distract from your question.

  • Looking for Word file reader

I have tried in vain to find a text reader app that will open Microsoft Word files and wraps text at all degress of text magnification. There's a terrific one for Android. Is there anything similar in the iOS world?

That would be the easiest way....
That was my 1st thought but he´s looking for an app to do that with word files.

  • Looking For Scan and Read Back Applications on the App Store for blind individuals?

    Hi There,
Are there anything applications on the app store which for example if you were to scan a document and the user wanted it to be read back to them in text form or what ever the e.g picture had text on them can it be done or is there any application looking for asap?!!

Apps don't go in Passbook, but passes do.  You can get passes via both the Starbucks and Apple Store apps.  If you sign up for an account in the Starbucks app, you can create a pass and add value to it (or enter an existing Starbucks gift card number).  The Apple Store app allows you to send gift cards to people, which can then be added to Passbook.

  • Looking for ebook reader app with good annotation features

I'm looking for an ebook reader app to use on my iPhone and iPad that will allow me to do this:
    1. In a book, Highlight a selection of text, and make that a note or annotation
    2. Be able to see all my annotations/notes for a book in one place
    3. And here's the one I can't seem to find: Be able to generate a file with JUST my annotations in it so that I can save it off or email it or dropbox it or something like that.
Does anyone know of such an app?

    I HAVE THE PERFECT APP!!!
I had been looking for an app that did the same things you requested. And somebody finally created it.
    Its called Readmill
    www.readmill.com
You can export all of your notes/highlights as an email.
It also syncs your ebook library with Dropbox
Here is the interview that Robert Scoble did with the makers of the app.

  • Looking for applications written using CLDC.

    Dear all,
I want to find some opensource Java application*s* written using CLDC. It is because I want to test the optimization of Squawk. Squawk only compiles Java files (not class files) written using CLDC.
Can you please give me some links pointing to CLDC based applications with Java source files.

  • Making an Arch Linux wiki-reader Android app - Looking for some advice

Hey guys, hopefully this is an ok place to post this. I've just finished a beginning Java course and I'm starting on the next one. I'm learning Java with the intention of creating Android applications as a hobby. Since I've found myself accessing the wiki from my phone on many occasions, and this doesn't seem overly difficult, I think this is a good place to start.
I've been playing with this idea for a couple of weeks and I'm trying to determine the best way to approach this. I'm looking for any pointers/advice from a development standpoint and any (potential) user feedback as well.
So far, with the help of other Archers, I have come up with the following three options:
    1) Obvious choice- Connect to the actual wiki online
    Pros:
    +Always up to date
    +Small application size
    Cons:
-More difficult to strip current style and "mobilize" layout (there is a lot of clutter and links to outside of the wiki)
    -More permissions that other choices
    -Requires internet connection
    2) Use the arch-wiki-docs package
    Pros:
    +Offline
    +Easier to add css styles
    +Hopefully would require zero permissions
    Cons:
-Application would be large ~40MB (Maybe it could be reduced by removing non-english languages?)
-Not up to date, but pretty close
    3) Use the arch-wiki-lite package
    Pros:
    +Offline
    +Small application size
    +Hopefully would require zero permission
+More of a native android application feel instead of a dedicated webpage reader
    Cons:
    -No links to other pages
-Would need to create style/layout from scratch
-Not really sure how this would work (Searching, etc)
-Not up to date, but pretty close
Right now I'm leaning towards the second option, but only if I can figure out an automated way to strip down the html pages and remove the non-english pages. I'm thinking that I'll start with an English only version, then add international support (or a second version) later on if people want it. What are your thoughts?

    Thanks for the response!
rickeyski wrote: 1. Any app you make will require you to generate your own layouts android uses xml layouts there are webviews, which provide some of this functionality if you need to use html, however this will require online access.
The arch-wiki-docs package is in HTML and I'm using WebView to read it locally. The arch-wiki-lite package is a text file. Maybe I could import it into a database? Either way, using that package will require me to create the whole layout.
rickeyski wrote:  2 you could use a wrapper like phonegap, but that would me writing everything in html, css, javascript and you will use virtually none of your java.
I've used Titanium Studio before, which I think is pretty similar to Phonegap, but I do want to make this one with Java.
rickeyski wrote: 3. 40 mb is a huge app, granted its before compression, but its also before all of your code and layouts to make it work.. You would be limiting yourself to only the newest androids, don't know which phone you have in mind, but might not be a problem for you.
40MB is the compressed size. The html docs are over 100MB uncompressed. I think I could significantly reduce the size by removing the non-english pages, but I can't figure out a systematic way to find them. There are 3551 pages and they use names like 00000965.html, 00000967.html, 00000968.html, 00000974.html, etc. (Of those 967 isn't english, but the other three are.)
rickeyski wrote: 4. the biggest plus is the android docs and examples apps are very good, start reading.
Yup. I've been reading through those a lot. They are a big help.

I am looking for a good app that can help a college student with reading books that cannot be found on audio book.  I have tried voice over and it works but it's very monotone and it really strings things together.
    - I'm willing to pay for a good app but I can't seem to sort though the many that are out there. Any suggestions.

Ah. I'm surprised, but there we go.
    Have a look here ...

(courtesy of googling 'OSX free multitrack recording software')
Didn't have time to do more than skim, but 'Ardour' looked promising. Protools is the only one I've used, the full product is one of the industry standards, but the free 'lite' version listed here seems to be limited to 2 in/out as well.
Referring to your original post, I'd think trying to write or 'script' something would be a nightmare ... synchronisation of streams within something like Applescript would be a major issue, quite apart from anything else.

  • LOOKING FOR AN APP THAT WILL ALLOW ME TO READ A PDF DOCUMENT OFF LINE

My itouch has 8 Gb of RAM and I am looking for an app that will allow me to store a PDF document in memory and read it off line as there are times when I do not have access to WiFi. I can email myself the document but I am off line, I don't think that the inbox is an off line folder from which an attachment can be viewed off line, right? Therefore the reason I am looking for the ability to save and read off line.
    Thanks!!

    @x62
I don't think that the inbox is an off line folder from which an attachment can be viewed off line, right?
No, incorrect. The inbox is an *off line* folder, just as it is on a computer. Once you download the email from the server, it is in your iPod/computer and you can access it when you like.
