Looking for help in making my computer good enough to play games

I bought a computer from Best Buy right after Christmas. It's a HPE-410y. I'm pretty happy with it in terms of speed and ease of use. I'm glad to be finally done with freaking Vista and blue screens of death.
Anyho, a buddy of mine wants me to play Bad Company 2 with him. I don't know much about the game other than its a shooter. However, I did read in the editoral review that the ATI 5570 my computer came with is weak. Also, 300Watt power supply needs to be upgraded as well? Do you think a graphics card/power supply upgrade is all I need? hmmm
I have glanced at the graphics cards at Best Buy when I've been up there, but not exactly sure what will work, what is good. Looking for any advice and help on what I should possible buy to get this computer good enough to play games.  I wanna do this maybe the end of next month. My budget is 450 bucks. I don't need to pay to have any upgrades I decide to get installed, my brother can help me do that. I just need help in what to buy.
Thanks for any feedback.

Agreed that it's an above average computer. If you still want to do the upgrade:

Coming right at your budgeted $450.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

If your needs are limited to those tasks then both Preview and iPhoto will fit the bill They are already on your Mac. There is a free download from Google called Picasa available here:

It works much the in same manner as iPhoto. For some really heavy duty work there is GIMP available from SourceForge:

Suddenly, after a year of good operation,  my itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive, rather than the external drive it had been set up to as default   How do I get it to search for the stored library on the external drive again ?

    Quit iTunes.
    On the external drive;
1 - Create new folder called iTunes (or whatever you want).
2 - Move your music folder into this.
3 - Go to the the C: drive iTunes folder.
4 - Copy the iTunes library.itl file into the iTunes folder on the external drive.
5 - Start iTunes holding the Shift key.
6 - Select Choose existing library and select the iTunes library.itl file you just copied to the external.

    Hi,
From your description, you want to achieve the following goal:
Configure Exchange to filter the attachments if the size is over 10 MB and store it in a public folder, and then forward the email to Salesforce.
Based on my knowledge, I'm afraid that it can't be achieved. Exchange can filter messages with attachments, but it couldn't store these attachments on public folder automatically. Also, I don't see any transport rule can do it.

Looking for help with respect to configuring MS Exchange server to handle attachments over 10 MB for forwarding to Salesforce (Email-to-case).
Problem - SFDC does not create cases from emails that have more than 10 MB of attachments. Our clients will not go-live if their clients cannot send in emails with attachments over 10 MBs
Potential resolution - Configure MS exchange to strip off the attachments(if over 10 MB) and store it in a public folder, forward the email to Salesforce (so the case gets created or the email
is associated to an existing case), the client should have some way to know if the attachments were stripped off and should be able to dlownload the attachments and continue with case resolution.
    Any help is appreicated!

  • Looking for help - Company is going to Mobile Asset Management service that does not support BB - especially BB 10.

    Hello,
I am looking for ideas/help. I currently have a BB Z10 (10.1.0.2039) with Verizon Wireless.  The company has a BB Enterprise Server for older devices (I previously was on that).  I bought a Z10 several months ago and have been connecting to the corporate network through Lotus Traveler. They do not have and will not implement a BB 10 Enterprise Server. Some in IT informed that if the company used the BB software they could manage all devices..... not accepted.
All my contacts, calendar, and company email is funneled to the BB Hub.....
So my company is implementing a Mobile Asset Management Service that I have to sign up for (Airwatch?).  They only support Android and IPhone.
Will future versions of the BB OS support Android Apps.... Soon (I have less than 2 weeks)
I have read where it is possible to put the device in development mode to run Android Apps.  I don't know if that will work with this and have no idea how stable the phone is in that mode. I travel internationally so I don't know how a development mode would work overseas. Any thoughts?
I like my Z10 but will need to switch to keep functionality if I can't find a work around
    Any assistance ????
    Thanks for any help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BB10 devices have the ability to run .apk apps via special methods. Development Mode is used only for installing the app...not for normal operation. So you install (side-load) the app in Development Mode, then go back to normal mode for normal operations.
If a .bar file for the .apk app already exists somewhere, you can side load it to the BB10 device and see if it works or not. If there is not yet any .bar file, there is an app called SideSwype that can convert many .apk apps to .bar and install it to your device.
    Good luck!

  • New window manager (with prototype!) [wmii-like] --- looking for help

I have a prototype for a new window manager in the style of wmii. It is called
cakewm. I currently have a prototype version implemented in pygame, and would
like help moving this to use X---making it a real window manager.
Disclaimer: I have a very limited knowledge of X11 and window manager
development. The most I've done is add a couple new features to wmfs.
    To get the code
    > git clone git://github.com/saikobee/cakewm.git
Then run main.py. cakewm depends on pygame.
Upon running, press Alt-Enter to fullscreen cakewm and intercept keybinds, or
Alt-Space to just intercept keybinds.  Press Alt-Esc to quit. The window
manager related keybinds are listed in the file binds.conf.
    Config note: <WSCA-x> means Windows-Shift-Control-Alt-x
Implementation note: pypixel.py is a large and mostly useless dependency. I
forked a library I made previously rather than coding straight in pygame.
cakewm's goals are to be similar to wmii, but with more functionality, easier
    configurability, and saner defaults.
    - cakewm is fully functional using the keyboard. Mouse support can come later.
    - cakewm provides 9 workspaces per monitor.
    - cakewm manages each workspace as a group of columns. Each column is like a
wmii default split, except each window can have other windows "stacked" on
      top of or behind it.
    - cakewm manages column sizes (and window sizes within columns) using a
master/slave paradigm, with the ability to adjust the size ratios.
    - cakewm's configuration file is simple key=val pairs, with the ability to
include other files like in C.
    - cakewm has a slightly larger emphasis on window decorations (adjustable
size---even in tiled mode) and themes (nothing bloated, like pixmaps or
      gradients---it's all still simple colors).
    - cakewm will have proper support for international text (Japanese text in
window titles or the wmii status bar generally render as boxes) through the
use of a more advanced text library such as Pango.
Please let me know if you have comments, questions, or concerns. If you are
interested in helping, get in touch with me. If you know somewhere better to
look for volunteers, please let me know.

The thing about wireless, I actually like command line, but there are a few things that are worth having a applet or something.
And wireless is one of those. I guess I can take a look on wicd.
It's a good idea to have compiz as the WM actually. Would it be lightweight to have it like that?
Is there anybody here that uses compiz as a WM?
For the xfce4-panel, is it possible to get transparency on it? That's probably the only thing holding me back with xfce4-panel.
If "able to run compiz" wasn't a requisite, what other WM would you suggest for my "profile" ?
I would like to hear other users opinions who like to customize everything on a WM.
I recommend running Compiz by itself. There is a good wiki page on it in the Arch wiki. Some apps you'll want to go with it are:
    LXAppearance --change GTK/icon theme
    Feh or Nitrogen --Set Wallpaper
Xfce4-panel --The lightest one that works with Compiz properly
Or, if you don't want a panel: stalonetray
    Compiz-deskmenu --For a customizable right-click main menu
Gmrun --Run dialog (Alt+F2 in most DEs)
And this helped me a lot.
Thank you all for the replies. I appreciate.
Xfce4-panel can have transparency.  The only problem is that everything become transparent: text, icons, everything.
I use Compiz as a standalone WM and it is much lighter than DE+Compiz. My Compiz setup uses about 30MB(out of 1GB) more RAM than my Openbox setup (which are both the same except for the WM).

  • Looking for help-DVD with web/email links

    Hall writes...
"snip...DVD@ccess is actually quite limited and not entirely compatible with the range of DVD playback software/hardware available on a PC... you might be better off using eDVD from Sonic (which is PC software, making use of the Interactual Player, rather than @ccess)."
I've no experience with Sonic yet but there is a small project in Chicago that needs help immediately. I'm looking for leads to pass on.
    [email protected]
    Thanks

    Well, there's the rub.
If you use DVD@ccess then pretty much every Mac will run the software easily enough, but you have to install it on a PC and even then it doesn't work as it should in a lot of cases.
If you use eDVD then PCs will almost certainly already have the player installed (since it is a far more ubiquitous piece of software than @ccess, and is used by a high number of commercial discs already in circulation), but you'll need to install the Interactual player on the Mac...
There are probably going to be far less Mac users than PC users - which might indicate that you go for eDVD and a more PC friendly solution.
But don't be fooled - eDVD is not the saviour that we all hope it will be. There are still issues on some PCs with it, and as you have already found, some issues on a Mac as well. The thing to consider is whether the eDVD solution gives more compatibility overall with your target users than DVD@ccess will.
You could opt for a more simple solution and just place the documents that you want included into a ROM folder on the disc, then use a menu to explain what's there and how to get to it.
The strong advantage here is that you'd have to create that menu anyway for those who view the disc in a set top player, and you are also not trying to post edit your files (as eDVD requires) or use software that simply isn't good enough on PCs (as @ccess seems to be).
It may be a less elegant and less gimmicky option, but I'll bet hardly any of your users will know the difference anyway...

  • Looking for help on what Hardware to use for FCS

I am looking to set up a shared storage for use in a small editing network and I am having a hard time getting my head around what exactly I need.
I have 4 edit stations that currently run externals. I am looking at a solution like FCS to centralize all the captures and media to edit from. We usually edit Apple Pro res and DV footage.
My understanding is that we need to connect to the storage using Fibre to get the bandwidth needed. My issue is wondering exactly how much hardware I need to get this done and what the layout of this hardware should be.
I currently have a Mac Pro that could be dedicated as the server running FCS. I plan on buying a Fibre connected storage RAID and outfitting the 4 Mac Pros in the office with Fibre cards. I am guessing I need to connect all of this with a Fibre switch. Is this all I would need? Would I be able to capture and edit off of the RAID using this configuration? What else would I need?
I have been looking for diagrams or some type of examples of configurations people have use and not been able to find much. Any advice would be great
    Thanks

    Steve Price wrote:
XServe, Promise RAID, QLogic Sanbox 20 port fiber switch, XSAN software, 5 Mac Pro Fiber cards.
That's pretty good, assuming you have the numbers right. You need Xsan software and a Fibre Channel card for every computer connecting via FC (the Xserves and Mac Pros). Note that the 20 port switch has 16 usable ports, and each storage or computing device should connect to two ports, so you've basically filled it up with what you've listed.
I also have an XServe that is on the (10 GB ethernet) network (in another building on campus) that is currently being used as a login/account manager (could it be used for metadata as well?).
It would be good to use this as the failover MDC to support the one you are purchasing. Can you relocate it so it is physically closer? It should be Intel. It is not recommended to have the primary MDC perform directory or other services, but some people do this (at a slight risk) on a secondary server.
Will I need to reduce one of the Mac Pro editors to merely a metadata controller (leaving me with 4 editors)?
Not recommended, except maybe as a backup.
Can I use the existing network for the LAN and METADATA Switches?
You'll need a separate network for metadata traffic. This can be physical or virtual (on higher-end switches).
@trezero-your list is the first I've seen with 3 XServes. Is this just because of FCServer? Can you not use the MDC or one of the networked editors?
FCServer warrants its own machine since it is fairly CPU intensive, especially if you are doing transcoding on it. In high performance environments people will add a second machine just to do rendering.
Don't put any other server process on the MDC. You could use the backup MDC for FCSvr, but this isn't recommended since if it gets failed over to, then it is no longer the backup, and you're again risking your Xsan integrity on a shared system. In an educational lab setup where the risk of downtime is not an inconvenience, you could probably get away with it.
You would probably benefit from either taking the Xsan class or working with a professional systems integrator. I'm based in the Southeast and can refer you to a few people if you contact me offline.

  • New Mac user looking for help with Finder, Preview, Keyboard, & Dock

So about a month ago I switched over from a lifelong Windows user to a brand new MacBook Pro, and while I am adjusting pretty well, there are still some things that I haven't quite figured out.
First up on the list is Finder! I like my files to be arranged just like how they are in Windows Explorer--folders first alphabetically, then files alphabetically. I've managed to acquire this setting by messing around with the "clean up by" and "arrange by" functions but I don't really know the specific combination. Most of the time these preferences are saved and set as the defaults under "View Options" but every once in a while it resets and I have to tinker around with the settings all over again. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? It's only happened twice so far, but I'd rather not have it happen again. Also, occasionally when I delete an item, there is a blank space left where the icon was instead of all the files following it bumping up a space. Any quick fixes for this bug?
Next up is Preview. Again, I like the Windows Way and I like to be able to browse between the files in a folder while using Preview/Windows Photo Viewer. I know that there is a way to browse between files if you select the whole folder and stick it in Preview, but is there a way to achieve the same result without having to do that? An app or "extension" of some sort that adds arrows in to browse between photos? I've had no luck finding anything other than the aforementioned option. Is there a good free alternative to Preview that will function similarly with the browse between photos option?
One of my favorite things about my new Mac is the backlit keyboard function. My old laptop didn't have it and as someone who is online more often at night it is super helpful. But is there a way to turn it off during the day/in bright settings? A way to put it on a timer? In System Preferences I selected the option "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light", which I assumed to mean would have the keyboard NOT very bright when there IS light, but it continues to light up just the same. Any apps or extensions to help with this one?
And finally, the dock! This question is more about aesthetics than functionality but help is appreciated all the same. Currently, my dock looks like this: http://i42.tinypic.com/35ktxlz.png It is rather opaque and the indicator lights can barely be seen. However, in a lot of tutorial videos I've been watching, many people have docks that look like this: http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/07/19/Lion_LaunchPad.png It is a darker shade of gray, the divider is dashed rather than a straight line, and the indicator lights are clearly visible. Does anybody know how to get this look for the dock? I've looked in the dock preferences but there's not really anything in there other than magnification/size/effects.
That about sums things up! I'm sorry if any of these seem like "silly" questions but they are all things I have been unable to find answers for. Any and all tips, tricks, and help is appreciated! Thanks in advance for all your help!!

congratulations on coming over from the dark side.
Seems like you are interested in column view, which would show you the hierarchy of folders and files:  Column View in Mac OS X Mountain Lion - For Dummies Not sure what's going on if your finder settings don't stay put. May be a corrupted preferences file, which is easy to fix, but is perhaps a topic for another discussion.
What I'd suggest is to have an open mind and try to see what the mac can do, rather than force it to look like your windows machine. I mean, if you just want it to look like windows, then why bother switching? If you give it a little time, you'll start to appreciate the mac way of doing things, and see how it is infinitely more awesome, powerful, creative, intuitive, and better designed (and the software way better written)  than what you left behind. But that's your call.
There are some threads on this forum with complaints about the backlight. Keyboard backlight settings query...: Apple Support Communities  Evidently it depends on the angle of the screen and the light sensor relative to the light. Some suggest that a SMC reset may help: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)  This is not an issue for me, I just adjust the brightness with the keyboard buttons if I want. Real men shift their own gears, drink their coffee black, and adjust their own keyboard brightness. I am not aware of any software to exert more control over this feature but a search of macupdate  Download Apple Mac Software & iPhone Software : MacUpdate may help. I mean, it's up to you what is important. I can waste a lot of time playing around with the GUI and with unnecessary software, or I can just get my work (and play) done.
You might prefer the no-glass dock, that removes the shelf, and makes the indicator lights like more discrete orbs. You can do this with the terminal. Using the terminal is also, perhaps, a topic for another discussion.I like the 2D dock much better. If you want I'll give you some directions for how to do it. Otherwise, here's a reference: 2D Dock - MacRumors Forums

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Apple comptuters  have few games written for them. Your game requires Windows OS XP or better as an operating system (Mac OS X IS NOT Windows XP or better).
While you can run Windows on a MBA (or most Apple Computers) you can not do it "right out of the box" you must run windows in Boot Camp or under emulation (Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion). Sometime emulators have problems wight peripherals (like game controllers).
You must own a copy of Windows XP or better to setup Windows on your Apple Computer.
So to answer your question if your prime reason to purchase a computer is to play games, a lot of games, purchase a Windows native computer (it will come with Windows XP or better installed) or buy a game system.
