Looking for laser printer recommendations (please read!)

I couldn't find a spot that fit this question and although I may not receive any answers here, this is a very active forum with members who are unafraid of new technology, so here's letting one rip...
OK, I've not had a laser printer in a number of years - when my beloved LaserWriter II NTX gave up the ghost. I find that I am lately, however, printing more and more text-only or text-heavy documents at home and going through black ink cartridges like a hungry lumberman through flapjacks. Although I've not looked into laser technology for years, I am wondering if it may not be more economical to print these pages on a 'personal' laser printer (I know that toner cartridges are not cheap, either, but they are less expensive, from what I've read, than using inkjet to print text-heavy documents) than to continue racking up rebate dollars by selling my soul for black ink cartridges.
So I am looking for a laser printer that can handle about 2,500-4,000 pages a month AND (here's the kicker!) have automatic duplex printing capabilities... I've never had this ability on a laser printer but I understand it's available on some models these days.
I'm not looking for an 'office capable' printer - maybe more like a 'small office'? No real need for Ethernet, yet, if it's a standard feature, I would certainly use it. A small footprint would be nice.
As I wander into the local Office Depot I am overwhelmed by the choices and yet stupefied to find that the 'hang tags' on many of the models don't really give too much information - page one can expect from a cartridge, connectivity options, duplexing capabilities (I seem to find none, yet am certain that I've read of their existence).
So my criteria:
1. monochrome
2. PostScript emulation (unless CUPS supports lasers? It'd difficult to tell by the ad hype yet Apple does seem to have drivers or, at least, Brother and HP laser printers). I don't want to be limited to 72 typefaces...
3. automated duplexing
4. small footprint
5. more economical to operate than an inkjet at 2,500-4000 pages per month
6. networkable, though served through another CPU via USB is fine
7. brand is not important - as long as reliability is high (and, like Brother, for instance, is supported by Apple)
Please leave a message if you should have ANY suggestions or, if you can point me towards a website with a good overview of what's available (and with actual tests would even be better!) I would be very appreciative.

Jamie,
I just wanted to thank you once again for your suggestion of the HP LaserJet 1320. I picked one up last week at Office Depot and, after I receive my $50 mail-in rebate, my total cost will have been $139.99!
The printer itself had an 'instant savings' of $100 off the SRP of $399.99 (and - for those who might be interested - this instant savings continues until June 30 - see the HP website for details.), bring it down to $299.99; I had an $100 Office Depot 'rewards' card plus a $10 'instant off' coupon from the previous week, bringing it down to $189.99 and there was a mail-in rebate for $50 (which, according to the paperwork, I can expect within 6 weeks) so... I was able to get a $400 printer for less than $140 (+ tax, of course).
Still, even with $14 tax, I have to assume that I would have paid at least as much in shipping AND I only had to drive for less than 5 miles, spend 20 minutes explaining why I did not want or need either the extended warranty or the Super Special Laser Printer Official Office Depot Very Special Customer Service Box (a cable, some paper, and a few other doodads for $60) and now I've printed a couple of hundred sheets and love the thing.
Had it not been for your recommendation, I likely would have forgotten the $100 Office Depot card until it expired and would not have sought out the printer there in the first place.
It's such a warm and fuzzy feeling to get such a deal on such a terrific little printer... and, so, I thank you, again.

  • Laser printer recommendations please

I need a printer that will work well with my 2008 iMac (Snow Lep) ideally wirelessly.  I need printing, scanning and copying - not huge quantities but need the quality to be good. My budget is around £150 and if I can find something that doesn't require cartridges that cost £1m each that would be a bonus!  There is so much contradictory info out there any recommendations would be gratefully received.

I am looking for a printer for my daughters apple laptop, any suggesstions

What are your daughter's needs? Is she a professional graphics artist needing a high quality printer, or is she a middle school student who just needs to be able to print a report for school? There are printers available for just about every need but they vary widely in price.
I have a Brother black and white laser printer that has served me well for many years, and only recently got a HP color inkjet printer because I need to do color flyers.
Let us know more and we'll be glad to help you.

  • When i ask my macbook air to print it tells me it is looking for my printer it takes several minutes before it finds it and then prints, why is that as my wife is connected to the same printer in the same way (bluetooth) and hers prints straight away

As per my question, when i ask it to print it tells me it is looking for my printer this takes several minutes before it prints.  my wife is in the same room using an imac also using a bluetooth connection to the same printer and hers prints immediately.  why is this.

Perhaps you could try this to resolve your issue:
*How to Reset the Printing System*
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse (or right click if supported).
    4. Click "Reset printing system ..."
    5. Restart your Mac
This will remove your print queues but not your printer drivers. So you will only need to add your print queues again.

  • Recommendations for Laser Printer

I need a low cost ($200-400) color laser printer with reasonably fast printing pages per minute, especially in black and white. It will be attached mostly to a an iBook running the latest OS X. It will also be attached occasionally to a Dell Latitude. Anybody got an ideas?

  • Multifunction laser printer recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations for a multifunction laser printer (print/copy/scan), color or monochrome that works well with the Imac 24. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Sorry, like I mentioned, familiar with regular laser printers ,but not with the multifunction printers. We have a pretty cool multi-funct here at work, but we're all on PC's.
HP is pretty good about supporting drivers for all HP consumer and business printers. Plus the Mac OSX print driver is smart and very compatible as is with a variety of printer makes.
check out HP's website to see what's available. Not sure if you're looking for high capacity/output or more for personal use?

  • Any Laser printer recommendations

    Hi
We are thinking of purchasing a ne colour laser printer. Primarily it needs to have a good colour accuracy, and be able to print A3 or A3+ and preferably be able to duplex.
Most importantly though it needs to be compatible with QXP7. Our last printer an Epson Acu laser C8600 could not print out A4 sheets in the right orientation, unless you used the Generic colour settings in the print dialogue.
Quark blamed Epson, Epson blamed Quark.
Anyway that aside, does anyone have any recommendations?
Oh and it has to be available in the UK.

    Hi
Sorry If I was being a bit vague.
We really don't need to get that nuch out of a printer. Our considerations will be based on colour accuarcy and compatability - Post script capability which I had omitted ia an essential. Then comes the abilty of the printer oversize A3 is really handy , as is duplexing, but we've made do without up until now.
I am quite aware of the major printer manufacturers, but was hoping for some user recommendations, really so that we could asscertain the real running costs. Although Our output is not high, maybe 1,000 copies a month,
poor reliability, whether you have a service contract or not costs time if you are always waiting for an engineer, and money when you have to source your output elsewhere.
We know there are many printers around and a fair few have reviews on trade related sites and in magazines, but nothing beats a users viewpoint, and these are not the cheapest pieces of equipment. For instance the lack of Quark compatability with the Epson was a surpise to us and is not mentioned in any review. Not that we've read anyway, although it has popped up in a few forum discussions.
What we would like to steer away from is getting locked into a contract. We were recently offered one very nice Xerox machine, but it only came with a monthly payment, service plan and an extra cost for every individual print exclusive of materials. Basically a neverending hore purchase.

  • Printer recommendation please

I am looking for a trouble free, relatively inexpensive to operate printer for everyday photo printing. I enjoy printing many of my images up to 8.5 X 11 on matte paper. Archival qualities are not important. My main concern is reliability and operating cost.
Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom.
    Ron

Really, as far as image quality, you can't go too far wrong with anything from Canon, Epson, HP. Of course a printer that says it's a Photo Printer will have better image quality than one that isn't. I'd check CNET and macworld (a printer is a printer) and other online sources to get an idea of ink usage. I was very surprised that it's more economical to run my medium format canon photo printer than some of their all-in-ones, but it is, so you need to check around for ink usage info. I agree that mulitple cartridges are preferable. I had an old HP that was a good printer, but I was always buying a whole new color cartridge just because I'd run out of cyan.
I would also check what paper is most readily available/most economical where you are. Generally you'll get best results on paper from the same manufacturer, and if that's expensive in your area, it can greatly increase your printing costs.

  • Looking for a printer

sorry if this isn't the right forum,
i'm looking for a relitivley cheap all in one device printer/scanner/photocopier compatible with both my MacBook Pro and my iBook G3 - could anyone recommend any?
    thanks

I highly recommend the HP Officejet All in One 4215.
There is now a newer and slightly updated model. Its an excellent and fast printer, scanner, copier and also a fax and is the most compact AIl in One I've seen and costs between $75-$90. I've even been able to connect it to an Airport Express and print wirelessly from a PowerBook G4, a MacBook Pro and a 2 Windows PC laptops on a home network using Bonjour even though the HP website says it doesn't support wireless networking. The ink cartridges are not too costly and ink cartridges are available for Photo printing. You can check it out at the hp.com website under All in Ones

I am looking for a basic printer and all that I have looked at say they are compatible with 10.6 or lower

Most all new printers are supported by the Apple's drivers. If not, then check the manufactures web site before buying the printer.

  • Escape codes for laser printer Kyocera FS-3920dn in reports 6i

    Hi,
I use many reports for printing on laser printer Kyocera FS-3920DN. But now I need print some reports on special performed paper. For this we added 1 paper tray to printer ( Now we have 2 trays in printer ). How can I define for new reports which tray have to use ??? I wish to specified for report2.rep to use automaticly tray 2. Its a way through PRT file use escape codes ?? Have you any experience pls??

In the report itself you can use:
    SRW.SET_PRINTER_TRAY('tray');
    see the online help.
We do it differently, though. Our printers have 2 trays, one with blank paper and one with pre-printed logo paper.
On each PC there are two printers defined (PRINTER_BLANk and PRINTER_LOGO). They point to the same printer, just a different tray.

  • Seeking Laser Printer Recommendations

I've been out of the tech market for a while now and I don't know if specs matter but they are below. I want a color laser printer with which I can print bumper stickers, fine detailed artwork, various grades of paper, and iron-ons. My budget is $1000.00.

    Machine Model: PowerBook6,7
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    CPU Speed: 1.33 GHz

    Thanks.

    Thanks SnazzyD
I have a Samsung CLP 500 which have had for three years and has given good service. It now needs a new transfer belt and imaging unit which would cost about £200 so I was thinking that it would make more sense to buy a new printer altogether and get the benefits of a guarantee. Whilst reliable the CLP 500 is a bit of a big beast and was hoping for a smaller desk footprint and lighter weight.
    Which Samsung do you have?
PS good to see that our canadian cousins can still spell colour correctly;-)
