Loss of thumbnails of RAW images in Photoshop prior to opening them in Camera Raw

I recently purchased and started using a Canon EOS 7D Mark II.  I found that with my Photoshop CS6 I was unable to open my RAW files in Camera Raw, so I downloaded an update of Camera Raw, viz. version 8.7.1 from the Adobe website.  Now I can open the RAW images from my new camera in Camera Raw.  However, I have lost the capacity to display a thumbnail image of a RAW file when using the open function of the file drop down menu in Photoshop. Now when I single-click on an ID number of a RAW image from the list of images, I see only a blank thumbnail.  I save lots of time using image thumbnails for selecting images for editing in Camera Raw.  Is there some way to restore the ability to see RAW image thumbnails in Photoshop prior to opening images in Camera Raw?

Which operating system are you using?
Are the blank thumbnails only for the files from the canon EOS 7D Mark II camera?
An alternative is to use Bridge CS6 or Mini Bridge to see the photos before you open them in photoshop cs6.

  • I can't preview RAW files in Bridge CS5 or open them in Camera Raw

I've been using Photoshop CS5, Bridge and Camera Raw 6.7 with no problems whatsoever.  I recently upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro to 10.8.5 and can no longer preview RAW files in Bridge, or open them in Camera Raw.
I've downloaded the Adobe DNG converter, but would much prefer to using my existing workflow if possible.
Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for any help!

Adobe doesn't support CS5, an when I spoke to Apple, I was told that this is a known issue with OS 10.8.5 and that they're working on a patch.  In the meantime I'm using Adobe's DNG as a workaround.
Have not heard before of this Known Issue, also find it hard to believe being true. But can't test my self because I only have CS6 and CC installed and always use Photodownloader to convert to DNG upon import. I have just installed the 10.8.5 update and checked in Bridge CC pointing to an attached card reader. no problem in showing the CR2 thumbs, it works as always and as expected.
To my knowledge Bridge CS5 is already 64 bits and I can't think of any valid reason why an OS update would cause this problem so suddenly (but I'm not a technician I have to confess…)
However, I would first try a check and repair permissions from Apple Disk Utility and also try Cocktail (good and cheap 3th party maintenance application for Mac) to clear caches and check permissions.
Also try a new user account just for testing to rule out your current account as the culprit.

  • RAW Images Alter When Saved After Processing in CS5 Camera RAW?

    Hi,
I am currently experiencing a problem in Photoshop CS5, where after processing a CR2 RAW image file in Camera RAW, whether I then decide to open the image straight into CS5, or save as a jpeg or tiff file, the image completely alters from what I was previously seeing in the Camera RAW window?
The saved jpeg/tiff, or image now shown in CS5 is now very tinted, where objects that were perfectly white in the Camera RAW window are now a dirty yellow colour.
I was just wondering if there was any advice any of you could give me as to what the problem might be?
I have made sure that both CS5 and the Camera RAW window are both set to sRGB, but it has had no effect on the problem.
Thank you in advance for any help

  • Sony's latest RAW format -  Will PhotoShop Elements 13 open them?

I have PhotoShop Elements 9 (MAC). With it I can open Sony Raw images from my Sony Alpha 350. I just bought a SONY Alpha 77MKII. I can no longer open those Raw files. Will PhotoShop Elements 13 open them?

Will PhotoShop Elements 13 open them?
    Yes.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
The Sony Alpha 77Mk II was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw plugin version 8.5.
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Elements 13 ships with Camera Raw 8.6 (and can be updated to 8.7.1)
FREE OPTION: download the Adobe DNG converter, convert all Alpha 77 Mk II Raw files to DNG format then edit the DNGs in Elements 9
Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG)

  • Elements 11 accepts no *.arw files even after new installation and camera raw modul 7.4. Under open files as Camera Raw the *.arw file is listed.

After trying all options provided by Adope I cannot open *.arw files under Elements 11.

You need camera raw 8.3 for your camera. It is only compatible with PSE12 or PSE13. Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.3
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.3
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Thumbnails change in Bridge before opening them in Camera Raw.

Images look fine then change dramaticlly to dark, over saturated. I've looked through other similar posts but nothing seems to work. I'm sure something is set wrong but don't know what. Also strange is if I look at the thumbnails before clicking on them (unchanged correct looking) and to a "print screen grab", that image has the dark, saturated images instead of what I see.

Did that and still have the issue. Purged the cache, unchecked all auto boxes with no luck. Anything else that may be set wrong? I'm gonna pull my hair out.
You never addressed my second suggestion, about monitor profiles, comment 3.
If you have a bad monitor profile, any image displayed in a fully-colour-managed application will look bad.
Are you on Windows or Macintosh? Are you using a monitor calibrator?
I don't do Mac, but in Windows, you should check your monitor profile. Maybe try an old profile, or one supplied with the monitor, or sRGB (if appropriate), to see if it makes a difference. Windows (Live) Photo Gallery or Windows Photo Viewer are fully managed apps, as are Bridge and Photoshop, if a known good JPEG looks bad in those programs then it's probably a bad monitor profile.
Is this a new installation, or have things suddenly gone wrong? Did you do an update? What version of CS are you using?
There's still a lot you haven't told us.

  • Can't open RAW images in Photoshop

I purchased a new computer. It runs 64 bits. I have CS4. Since uploading it to my computer, I can not open RAW images. I have downloaded the most recent updates.
I have been using the 32 bit photoshop because I could not get my NIK filters to work in 64 bit. But I can't open any of my RAW images.  I can't open them in either 32 or 64 bit.
I have version 5.0.0.178 of Camera Raw.  I only know this because I can see it under "About filer.... Camera Raw".  I cant find any camera raw filters in adobe/plug-ins in either version of photoshop. I have a huge photoshoot tomorrow. I NEED to open RAW images.  HELP!!  Regular Support is down for the next few days.

If you look at this list: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html
You will see you need Adobe Camera Raw 4.6 or later.
As Chris says, update either maually from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4681
Or use the Updater from PS help.

  • RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

Your question is a little unclear. In a "normal" Lightroom/Photoshop workflow the raw images do not open from Lightroom into Camera Raw. Lightroom has all of the Camera Raw functionality in the develop module. When you choose to open an image in Photoshop, and Lightroom and Photoshop are synchronized (i.e. referencing the same version of Camera Raw) then Camera Raw is simply used to interpret the Lightroom adjustments as the image is transferred to Photoshop. If Camera Raw is an older version then Lightroom offers you the choice to open the image or create a PSD or TIF file that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments. But in either case, opening in Camera Raw is not part of the workflow. It is possible to open the image as a smart object or convert the image to the smart object in Photoshop and then open it in Camera Raw. That is done from within Photoshop or is one of the open options in Lightroom. If you choose to go the smart object route the image first has to be opened in Photoshop and then from there you can open it in Camera Raw.

  • Can't open NEF with Camera Raw from Bridge

I recently updated to CS6 and got a new Nikon D600.  Downloaded the lastest DNG converter but when I pull up files in Bridge I can't open them with Camera Raw anymore.  My process was to open in Bridge.  Select the NEF files I wanted then click mouse+control, which gave me a menu to open in Camera Raw.  Now my only option is Photoshop CS6.  I downloaded the trial for Photoshop CC and Bridge CC but still can't select to open with Camera Raw.
What is going on?  I have never had issues like I have been.  HELP Please.

From your description it sounds as if Camera Raw isn't installed, or is installed incorrectly. In Photoshop go to Help/about plug-ins/Camera Raw and verify that you have it installed correctly. Since you are on a Mac, I cannot advise as to where it should be installed.
The other thing I have been thinking about in your situation is, how were these images downloaded from your camera?if you used an older version of Nikon Transfer it can alter the files so that they cannot be opened in Camera Raw.
Do you have other software like ViewNX2 or CaptureNX2, and will those programs open your files?

  • Cannot open jpeg in camera raw format

In Elements 9 I have the option to "open as..." camera raw but the camera raw window does not open up when I pick the photo and choose that option.  Any help would be much appreciated!

In accord with what has been written already in this thread, I suspect that you intended your question for Photoshop Elements and not Premiere Elements Forum since the Open As route to JPEG in the Camera Dialog is one of the features of the Photoshop Elements Full Editor.
Just in case, I wanted to contribute the following thoughts on the use of Camera Raw in the "Elements" environment:
    1. Your camera supplying the raw images needs to be supported by the version of Camera Raw and that version needs to be supported by the Photoshop Elements version that you are using (two separate and needed thoughts).
    2. On the Premiere Elements side of things, you can import raw and dng images into Premiere Elements but you have to have an appropriate version of Camera Raw plugin installed for Premiere Elements. In earlier versions of Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements, these programs did not share the same program files location for the Camera Raw Plugin. In more recent ones, they do.
    3. You cannot open the Camera Raw dialog for editing purposes (raw or otherwise) from Premiere Elements. The Camera Raw plugin in Photoshop Elements will get you the Camera Raw dialog for editing purposes.
    4. Also in later versions, one can now use an automatic process for updating Camera Raw to the latest version for your particular version of Premiere Elements. Best, use the program's Help Menu/Updates.
Hope the information will be helpful.

  • Can't open raw images in Photoshop Elements 9

I've just finished doing a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 SP1 onto my desktop PC.  I installed Photoshop Elements 9 but it can't open any raw images (specifically Canon .CR2).  When I open one of the same images with Photoshop CS5.1, it properly opens up the image in Camera Raw (6.6), allows me to pre-process the image, then edits it in Photoshop (as you would expect).
Before installing Photoshop, I did manually install Adobe Camera Raw 6.2, then upgrade it (multiple steps) up to the current v6.6.
I also copied the Camera Raw.8bi into the Plug-Ins\File Formats sub-directory of both C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements 9 Organizer and C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9 but there was no change of behavior with Photoshop Elements 9.
This was working prior to the re-install of Windows 7.
Any suggestions on how to get this working?  Thank you, in advance.

When I to to Help>Update, it offers to update Photoshop Elements to v9.0.3 but no mention is made of Camera Raw (any version).  I'm not even sure how to determine what version it thinks is installed since there's no reference to Adobe Camera Raw in the Windows 7 Programs and Feature Control Panel applet.
    Suggestions?

  • Opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9

When opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9 (File -> Open or File -> Open As), the Adobe Camera Raw dialog do not open.
Instead I get a window with a progress bar and the text "Reading Camera Raw Format".
The image then opens in the Photoshop Elements editor.
I have tested this with raw images both from Canon EOS 1000D and Samsung WB2000 cameras.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this issue.
I run Photoshop Elements on a HP netbook running Widows XP and with an Intel Atom N450 / 1.66 GHz processor, 2 GB ram and a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.

Unfortunately you can't see the raw converter in PSE 9 on screens less than 800 px tall, which means not on netbooks. PSE will automatically convert it for you, but that dialog box and a few others, like the Advanced Downloader window, will not appear.

  • I can not open canon 60d raw images on photoshop CS5.1? can not go to updates either- error?

I can not open canon 60d raw images on photoshop CS5.1? the same program on stationary mac can open the same raw files, whereas new lap top can not? Why?  can not go to updates either- error, why?

Which version of mac os x does your new mac have?
What error do you get when going to Help>Updates in photoshop cs5.1?
You might try downloading and installing the 6.7 camera raw update from here:

  • Opening raw images in PHotoshop CS4 extended

I appologize in advance for this DILETTANTE question. I was happily using Lightroom II until recently when I decided, like an idiot,  to buy Adobe Design Suite, which includes Photoshop Cs4 Extended.
I am unable to open raw images, I get "could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document.". The camera I use right now is Canon 5D Mark II. Lightroom does not have any problem either importing the raw images from the card or importing them from my hard disk, if I had already copied them there from the camera card.
    Could anybody help me?

For that camera you need the ACR plug-in version 5.2 or higher; you probably still have 5.0 from the installation of the software.
Check in PS Help > About Plug-in...
