Lost Library - New Importing Settings

Hello,
I gave my computer a clean install yesterday, as I finished university, I backed everything up onto an external hard drive. HOWEVER... my iTunes Library file is corrupt, it just won't open, I've tried everything over the last four hours.
I've accepted the fact that I need to re-import all my music, it'll give me a chance to dig out old CDs I haven't seen in a while.
Anyway... there has been many discussion about what is the best settings to use when import music from CD into iTunes.
What is the best setting: AAC Encoder, AIFF Encoder, Apple Lossless Encoder, MP3 Encoder, WAV Encoder?
I've never really thought about it in the past and just left it to the default.
THANKS for any information.

Contacted Apple Support and they helped. THANKS

  • Lost library - "new" iPhone

    Hi all,
Firstly I apologise for this long paragraph...!
My iphone 4 (16gb) started with a few problems a few months ago (mainly the home button not working properly) so today I took my phone to the apple store where the guy completely restored it. My itunes library is on my external hard drive, so when I got home, I plugged it in, expecting the library to sync everything on to my restored phone..... PROBLEM! Half way through syncing, the hard drive completely crashed, and now my PC isn't recognising it (yes, I've tried everything).
My Q:  Is there anyway of installing my original itunes on my actual PC (with my log-in details??), without using my iphone (as it's only got half the apps/music/etc etc) ?
Please help. I'm at a loss!
    Many thanks
    Rachael

What is the size of the one library you still can find?  Is it large enough be containing more than a few pictures?
iPhoto only shows me one photo library when I click on 'Access the library' (the one with my few iPhone pictures).
iPhoto will not show corrupted libraries or libraries that are not recognised as iPhoto Libraries or are on external drives with wrong formatting.
Search for your Library indirectly by searching for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries. If you download and run Find Any File you can search the whole Mac including the folders the folders that Spotlight will skip, download here: Find Any File
(siehe Old Toad's post:  Re: Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available. How can I find it? Can I use the time machine to restore it?)

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

My wife just got a new iPhone 6 and took some great photos then I connected it to her computer and restored it to her iPhone 4 settings and lost her new photos. Is there a way to recover them?

Sorry, unless she backup up the new phone before or is using iCloud to save the photos, the photos are gone.

  • Importing Settings from another Aperture Library?

    Hi folks!
I want to create a new Aperture Library to start again instead of cleanning up the one I already have, but when I create a new Library and import the photos the adjustments I did to the same photos but located on the other library doesn't applies or show up in the photos of the new library. Is there a waty to import the adjustments of an old library to a new one?
    Thanks in advance,

Léonie has provided an excellent answer to your question -- I would like to propose a different solution to your problem.
First, though, we should confirm what your problem is.  From your post, it seems that your Aperture _organization_ is a mess, and you want to clean it up.  Your proposed solution is to start with a new Aperture Library, and populate it with the Images (including adjustments) that are in your current Library.
An important thing to take from this is that Aperture is _working well_, just, from a human perspective, disorganized.
In other words, you have no computer hardware or software issues you are trying to resolve (Aperture has no idea whether your organization works for you or not).
Instead of creating a new Library and then working with two Libraries, you might be better served by making your entire current organizational structure a child of a top-level Folder in your current Library.  That way it is always available and capable of being hidden (use the disclosure triangle that accompanies every Folder to hide and show), and it remains both easy and frictionless to move your Images/Albums/Folders/Projects from the old structure to the new structure.
When you have completed building your new structure, there should be nothing left under the Folder you created for your old structure that you want to save.  At that point, delete that top-level Folder.  Voila! -- you have the new Library you want.
If your current Library organization is so much a mess that it is going to be easier to "start from scratch" (retaining, of course, all the adjusted Versions), then I suggest using Projects View (set to ungrouped, sorted by date ascending) to merge all your existing Projects into a series of large Projects based solely on date -- keep these to about 1,000 Images each -- and then in essence going through each of these "super-Projects" and breaking them into the Projects that should have been set up all along, viz.: Shoots.  Once you have re-sorted all of your Images into new, consecutive, shoot-based Projects, the rest of your Library organization should be much easier.
You can accomplish the same thing, more simply, in Photos View (sort by date ascending; select consecutive Images, "File→New→Project" with "include selected" checked).  The users I've worked with have been more comfortable seeing their existing Projects (in Projects View) rather than really starting fresh with every Image in Photos View.
    Two notes:
This is based on first creating a sensible and consistant Project-based grouping of your Images.
Your Images contain the adjustments needed to make them.  Nothing here changes that.  All you are doing is changing the containers that hold your Images.  (If the Image is table-setting, you are putting down a new table-cloth, and centerpiece, and table, and building a new dining salon, and castle, and grounds -- without changing the table-setting at all.)
This is complicated, but doesn't endanger your data (and, of course, you DO have a backup, right?).  Post back with any questions.

  • Develop settings lost after re-importing folder of DNG files

I've been using LR for several months, and - after getting accustomed to its peculiararities - love the program.
This evening I re-imported a folder of DNG files that I had previously removed from LR - using the "add" import option. When going to the Develop module, I noticed that my original develop settings were no longer applied.
Aren't these settings incorporated into the DNG files? How could they get lost? Are they over-written when re-importing the files?
I always backup my catalog before closing. Does the catalog backup contain the original develop settings for these DNG files?
I know I must have done something wrong! Please advise & explain. Thanks.

    Seven_D wrote:
Thanks. I do have autowrite to XMP checked. - I learned that lesson a few months ago!
I will see if I can use an older backup to recover the settings. I have never done that before, but I know where my catalog backups are located. If you can give some advice on that, I would appreciate it. I don't want to lose other DNG edits in the process.
Correct me if I'm wrong - but it appears that if I ever do want to remove a previously imported folder from LR for whatever reason - I should just edit the RAW files without converting to DNG. I know DNGs are more compact, but at least the sidecar files associated with the RAW files will always be there! This is more important to me than conserving disk space!
just try it on one or tow files to test. Also look at "Read Metadata from file" in the current catalog first with ine file to see if that helps. Did you have a Prest applied when importing like Zeroed?...... None is the best for importing files with dev settings already applied.
I use DNG exclusively and haven't experienced your issue so review your import settings as mentioned.

  • Lost my import settings pull down and menu

I've been having problems running Aperture....slow speed, not seeing previews...etc...
I was told to repair library data base by holding the opt+comm keys when opening Aperture.
I did a repair and was still having issues so I did a rebuild as a last resort.
Now when I try to import from my memory card I no longer have an import settings pull down or menu....essentially I cant import!
    Any suggestions?

When menu items are missing it might be a problem of corrupted preferences files or a system wide problem.
As a test: Run Aperture from a different user account, for example the Guest account. Is the "Import" manual there?
If all menues are in a different user account, delete your User Preferences, as described in Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics (the paragraph  "Delete the user preferences"). Log off and on again after doing that.
If the problem occurs in all accounts, reinstall Aperture.
And if that stll does not help, post back and tell us more - have you installed anything lately? Any other applications behaving strangely? Have you done any maintainance, cleaning running cleaner applications?

  • Iphoto 9  very unstable, Create new library.  Import one picture = crash

    Reloaded  Iphoto 9.
    Create new library.
    Import one picture,
    Iphoto 9  crashes immediately.
Same behavior I was trying to fix.
    plist trashed. permissions repaired,
Iphoto Lib manager also crashes Iphoto 9.
    macbook 2.26  running 10.6.8
    appreciate any insight.

Did you delete the receipts before reinstalling?
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • If I use airport utility to erase my time capsule will all my settings be lost? Does "import configuration" work well?

If I use airport utility to erase my time capsule will all my settings be lost? Does "import configuration" work well?

Erasing the Time Capsule's internal HDD, via the AirPort Utility, will NOT affect the TC's configuration settings. However, if your intent is to completely remove these settings as well, you will want to perform a "factory default" reset on the TC to do so.
If you first export the configuration, you can always import it back in after the reset to get you back up and running quickly.

  • We have a new iPod  Classic and would like some help in choosing "Import Settings" (under Peferences) when loading the iPod from the Mac.  We want to be sure that we can maintain a constant sound level.  Used with Bose sound dock. OS 10.6.8 iTunes 10.6.1.

  • How do I remove an entry from the "Store Files" drop down list in the "Import Settings" section of Aperture 3.3.2

The dropdown list "Store Files" in the "Import Settings" section of Aperture 3.3.2 displays the history of the entries previously added to the list. Some of the entries are no longer valid and I'm trying to delete them but I can't find a way to do this. This is a screenshot. Does anyone know how to do this?

Once again - the Jive system ate my bullet points and messed up the formatting
Is the MacOS X version in your signature correct? Then you cannot be using Aperture 3.3.2?
You should not be seeing duplicate entries in the "Store Files" pop-up menu. This looks like your Aperture Preferences file is corrupted and needs fixing.
Quit Aperture (and log off and on again, if you are running MacOS X 10.7 or later)
Then reveal your User Library (from the Finder's main menu bar, the "Go" menu. Hold down the options-key until the library apears in the drop-down menu)
In the Library folder select the "Preferences folder and locate the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist"
    Now you can either
remove the com.apple.Aperture.plist file to the Desktop, to force Aperture to create a new one, but you will have to set again your Preferences from the "Preferences" panel,
or make a backup copy of the file and edit it, if you are an experienced programmer and have Xcode installed. To fix the drop-down list you need to edit the item "RecentReferenceFolders" and delete the redundant folder names. Enter "recent" into the search field to find it quickly. If you click an item in the list, plus/minus buttons should appear. But only try this, if you know how to edit property lists, otherwise it will be much safer to delete the faulty list and to set your preferences again from the "Preferences" panel.

  • Windows 8 upgrade lost all my account settings

I just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 8 and it deleted my Thunderbird program. SO, I reinstalled it but I've lost all my account settings and e-mail folders.
I stored my e-mail folders in another location, and they're still on my harddisk, but I no longer see an option for controlling where the e-mails are stored in this version of T-bird.
Do I have to manually recreate all my e-mail accounts again? And, after that...how do I get it to read my e-mail folders? I have thousands of e-mails that I must have access to. This is a disaster!
    Please help.
    Thank you so much!

Thank you for your reply, but I don't think I was clear with the problem. I can find the account settings option. The problem is everything that was there before I installed Windows 8 is gone. I have to manually re-enter all my e-mail accounts, but all of my old e-mails are not showing up. I can get new e-mails (if I re-enter all the account information), but I have thousands of old e-mails and folders that I cannot access.
How do I get those folders back "into" Thunderbird? It doesn't allow me to import anything. I am only given the option to import from Outlook, and I don't even have outlook.
I was storing (at least I THINK I was storing) my e-mail files on a separate partition of my hard disk, and I THINK it's all still there, but there's no way to access those files for some reason on my newly installed Thunderbird.

  • Auto Create EVENTS with existing library (already imported)

Had an "issue" a while back where I lost all my photos. It has since been corrected via Data Rescue but... I must have imported the found photos in a manner that did not allow for iPhoto 08 to auto-create events. So I have one big event with 15,000 plus photos in it.
Is there any option to have iPhoto create new events automatically from these photos based on picture date? New imports are fine.
Most of the pictures have the correct exif data....
    Thanks

Except you will have 15000 duplicates
    1 - quit iPhoto,
2 - delete your iPhoto preferences,
3 - drag the iPhoto library to the desktop (this will be a backup),
    4 - start iPhoto,
5 - reset the preferences including the split items imported from the finder,
6 - and drag the originals folder from the iPhoto library on the desktop onto the running iPhoto program - this will import all of your originals (and hopefully split them into events) into a new library - after you check it you can delete the one on your desktop (or archive it as a backup )
