Loud fan when opening macbook

Hi,
Since the other day whenever I open my macbook the fan is very loud intermittentley for about a minute and then stops completely until I close it and open it again.
I have an early 2008 macbook. The problem just started a few days ago. We recently reinstalled Lion but have since downloaded a few things. My macbook doesn't feel warm at all.
Thanks!
Please let me know if there is any other information I have to give you.

Try resetting the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Clicking noise, random loud fan, brand new macbook help?

    Ok. Here goes:
Just bought a new macbook 2.16, with 2 gigs of ram from an apple store on Friday. I notice that about every twenty seconds I hear clicks that sound like the harddrive is thinking, followed by a slightly louder fan, and then just as suddenly the louder fan goes away. I downloaded IstatPro and my fan would hover around 1799 but constantly go from 1795 up to 1805.
What's strange is that when it gets louder, I don't hear it go up to speed like my Imac used to do, and it's not a higher frequency but sounds like something that was in front of the vent kind of jumped to the side, and now it's just louder.
It's annoying. I would much prefer a constant 1800 whir which is actually quite pleasent.
Let me know if this is normal fan activity. Or any idea of what this could be. Besides that the computer is running great. I'm going in on Saturday and possibly asking for a new computer? Just now afraid that I might not get something better. Also the box the computer came in was really dirty, and a little banged up. Do they used recycled boxes, or could I have possibly got a previously owned unit? Thanks. sorry for the long post...

... we've got the same machine. mine's a month old; it sounds exactly as you describe. the fan noise increases with cpu load, and on mine doesn't start to bug me until around 3,000 rpm and gets real loud ~6. the last laptop I had, a win machine, was absolutely silent until I saved to the hard drive or opened a new program. the keyboard was silent too. so I got spoiled. I did about a 100 page search here and it seems common for the macbook to run noisily and hot. I haven't been able to get a definite yes or no from any genius or tech on whether the fan is designed to ever shut off, but from what I've found out, I would guess not. The cd/dvd drive crunches and clunks when it grabs a disc (there's a recording of this on the apple site indicating it is normal)and when it spins up, sounds like the machine will lift off the desk -- which I have read other users say.
take an hour and search here. between user comments and moderator replies, and the apple tech docs, there's a lot of info.
    hope that helps.

  • Apple TV cuts off when open Macbook. WHY IS THIS STILL AN ISSUE!!

The issue is not fixed with Apple and it's really annoying. It affects all devices. Here is what I have found so far and I'm pulling my hair out. APPLE!! why have you not had a fix for this yet? You come out with the latest and greatest devices but you can not keep what you already have running? Come on this is frustrating. Look at the number of times this question has been asked on here, heck look at the number of views its unreal at over 10,000. This is a huge issue and should be worked on ASAP. At least make us think you are trying to fix it. If there is some magical fix I have not been able to find it.
And because many people while trying to help ask the same questions to all these post I will try to answer all the typical questions now to save some time.
    - Yes, I have tried it with Itunes off and it still does it so it is not an Itunes issue.
    - No, I am not watching a movie from my Macbook to ATV and I shut the lid etc. Nothing is streaming from the Macbook to the TV when I have the issue.
    - The ATV works perfectly fine so long as the Macbook lid stays closed or the WiFi is shut off.
    - Yes, I have been able to watch ATV while the Macbook was open, Itunes both on and off, WiFi on and ATV played fine. The issue seems to be intermittent but now has gotten worse.
    - It has done the same thing with two completely different routers.
    - iCloud off - no change
    - Homeshare off - no change
    - iTunes off - no change
    - I turned off Wifi while no show was playing on ATV. Turned WiFi back on then started a show on ATV while the lid was open. Show ran fine. I turned off WiFi on MB show still ran fine. I turned WiFi back on and it killed it. ATV went back to main menu. Tried to restart show without making any changes while lid open and show would not play.
    - Logged out of iTunes account on ATV, tried to watch show went back to main menu, would not play.
    Info

iTunes - 11.1.5 (even though not used or on)
    OS X - 10.9.2
    iPhone
    Version 7.1
    ATV
    Software 6.1
Here is what I can or can not do at this point when my Macbook Pro is online with lid open.
    1. ATV is running a show and roommates come home. Cuts out starts giving me issues. Have not confirmed if they are opening a mac or not but they all have iPhones.
    2. Listening to podcast on ATV from my iPhone using Airplay to ATV. the broadcast will play perfectly fine until I open my macbook. At that point it cuts off completely and switches to phone output from ATV back to what it iPhone. Itunes on my Mac is turned completely off. If I turn off the WiFi connection on my MBP then the ATV Airplay on my phone works just fine. The audio will play to my ATV and will not switch back. The second I turn WiFi back on it kills the Audio and the phone goes back to normal mode. It does it right in front of my eyes. So something is causing it to switch back overriding it but it is not iTunes. Also one other thing I noticed if I try to force it by hitting the airplay button every time it try's to switch back the podcast info will flash on the ATV for a second like it is trying then it kills it and goes back to the phone.
    3. ATV running a show and I open my Macbook, cuts off goes back to main screen even when itunes is off. If I close the lid and try it right away it will still go back to menu. If I try to select a program it will not play at all. Just flashes and goes back to main screen. I have to wait a few moments or try watching a different show then go back tot he one that was cut off for it to then work correctly.
NOW to add insult to injury I confirmed all of this then went along my menu bar at the bottom confirming everything was off and testing ATV every few until it started working. It started working after I turned off Skype, Word, Excel, and VLC. The show ran with the top open or shut or opening it while running. also connected and disconnected WiFi show ran fine. So I started turning everything back on one at a time opened and shut lid until ATV cut back to menu and nothing. Show has been running for last 5 minuets with out a hitch. I logged back in to iTunes on Apple TV tried again still works fine. Who knows when it will act up again.
This happens on Hulu Plus and HBO Go and Airplay on my phone. I really want to see this issue corrected there is no excuse for it this long after the release.

  • New MacBook Pro 13" 2015 loud fan when gaming

I bought a new MBP 13" (2015) yesterday to replace my old MBP 13" (2009) and this morning I installed Sid Meier's Civilization 5: Campaign Edition, a game that I also played on my old laptop. After maybe 2-3 minutes of playing, the fan cranks up to max and the computer starts getting really hot. I tried rebooting the computer and shutting down some unnecessary processes, but when I started the game again the fan went crazy just as before and the temperature rose quickly. The graphics settings are all on low. This never happened on my old computer. The game is not exactly new so there shouldn't be any problems running it on my new MBP. I tried Batman Arkham Asylum as well, same problem there. Youtubing and such works fine, the fan can't be heard and the temperature is low. Does anyone else experience this?

Perhaps you have other processes that are incompatible. Start by:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Loud fan and hot macbook

    Hi
Just in the last week or so I've noticed my Macbook gets really warm after about half an hour or so and the fan (I think) gets really loud. I'm not normally running much maybe itunes and safari and thats it.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?
    Thanks

Go to Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor. From the pull-down menu in the middle, select "All Processes" (default is "My Processes"). That will tell you if you have a runaway process running in the background.
However, depending on what you're doing in Safari, you could still be causing the high CPU load--a lot of video, for example, will cause your machine to run hot.
    Good luck!

  • Black Screen when opening MacBook

Not all the time but a lot more often recently when I open my MacBook up it'll show like I never closed it and then goes to the login screen and then a black screen.  After that it takes at least 5 minutes to turn on.  Help.

    Try reseting your prram.
    1. Power off your MacBook.
    2. Wait a couple of minutes (2-3).
    3. Hold down Command(apple), Option, P, R and the power button.
    4. WHen you hear the chime keep holding them but let go of the power button.
    5. The screen will go black then will chime again after awhile.
    6. Let go and wait for it to start up.
This may help, im not 100% sure but this has happened to me before.
Maybe not the same thing but a somewhat simular problem.
    Hope I helped!

  • Black screen when opening MacBook Air

Now and then, when I open up my MacBook Air, the screen is all black and do not respond to any key action - it is not shut down. Most of the times the start screen is there asking for login. The only way to get around the black screen is to force a restart.
It's a mid 2013 13 inch MBA 1.7 GHz i7 with 8 GB RAM running Maverics 10.9.3. This blackscreen problem has evolved since some of the latest OS updates.

  • Little Squeaky Noise When Opening MacBook

I've had my MacBook for 8 months now, and from the minute I got it, it makes a funny little 'squeak' when I open the lid.
Sometimes when I have the lid CLOSED it does this too. The light on the Apple logo on the lid will turn on (while it's closed) as it makes that little noise.
    Anyone know what that's about?
    Thanks for your help.

Hi, and thanks for the welcome
Nope, no disc in there. I got her to turn it all off and leave it a few hours and try again, but the weird noise is still there.

  • Loud Fans when using Screen Recorder in QuickTime

When recording my screen in quick time my fans always kick into the highest gear. This only happens when recording my screen. They are so loud that I cant hear anything in the recording but the fan noise. Is this normal? Will it be fixed by using  another program to record my screen???
    Thanks in advance!

    Is this normal?
It could be. Fan speed increases to dissipate increased heat. Depending on the number and type of CPUs available, area of screen being recorded, compression format being used, and the ambient room temperature, your system may be overheating causing the fan(s) to run faster. On the other hand, your heat sensors may be malfunctioning causing the fan(s) to run faster than they should/need to. Try reducing the ambient temperature of the room and see if that makes a difference.
Will it be fixed by using  another program to record my screen????
Probably not. This is mostly a hardware thing.

  • Clicking noise on left side when opening macbook screen

For some reason, all the sudden my macbook started making a clicking noise on the left hidge of the screen everytime I open it. I looked closely and discovered that the space between the bottom portion of the macbook and the screen (when closed) is bigger on the right side then on the left side. The left side is almost flush with the bottom portion but the right side has some extra space, which is needed so the plastic doesnt rub together and create this clicking noise.
What I dont understand is how the heck this happened...I was just sitting there on my mac book, opened and closed it and now the screen has a smaller space on the left side.
Has anyone else had this problem? I think its worth taking it to an apple store to get repaired but I'm starting school very soon and need it. Any ideas?

So I took my macbook to the apple store which unfortunantly is 45 minutes away from my house. I showed an apple genius my problem and he said that he didnt know how my problem occured but he thinks it can be fixed by sending the laptop in and having them re-adjust the bezel. He told me just by looking at it, he couldnt really tell me if it was easy to fix. He also offered to send it in for me and see what they could do but I need it next week for school so I couldnt do that. Apparently the apple store in san fran where I'm moving to for school next week is bigger and they have more staff so they can proabably just fix it in the store rather then send it in.
To make a long story short I was pretty angry since thats all I got from them after my long drive down there and my 25 minute wait once I put my name in.
But anyways, I personally think since the cpu chip is on the top lefthand corner of the mac book (i think), that the extreme heat that this corner of the laptop produces warped the corner of the screen . I'm not really sure if thats the answer but it makes sense to me considering the right hand side of the laptop is not nearly as hot as the left side and the right side is not afected. It could have just heat warped it causing it to not line up properly while closed.
If anyone finds out anymore answers to this problem please let me know...
    Thanks!

  • Weird noise  when opening macbook

Hello. I'm asking this about my mums macbook actually, and she doesn't live near me so I have only heard the sound on the phone! However, you know the whirry start up sound that you hear when you wake the MacBook? It has suddenly become different. It goes on for longer, and sounds like some kind of a glitch, it's short bursts rather than a continuous tone, and it stops after a while. She says everything else seems to be functioning as usual. Any ideas please?

Hi, and thanks for the welcome
Nope, no disc in there. I got her to turn it all off and leave it a few hours and try again, but the weird noise is still there.

  • Loud fan when using flash

I have a mid-2013 retina macbook pro (15 inch).  About a month or two ago, I noticed that my fan has been acting up whenever I watch flash videos or flash games.  I've had my laptop for over a year, and the fan has only recently been acting up.  It doesn't matter whether I use chrome, firefox, or even safari: the fan still acts up.  I checked activity monitor, and it tells me google chrome helper, firefox, or safari (depending on which browser I'm using) is the culprit.  The percent CPU can go up to around 100+.  As soon as I pause the video or close the browser, the percent CPU goes down and the fan begins quieting down.  Is there a simple fix to this?  As I said, this never use to happen to me before.  I don't really want to reformat my computer if I can avoid it.  Once apple releases Yosemite, do you think a simple update to that might fix things?  Thanks!

Flash videos are very GPU and CPU intensive. It's not unusual for your fans to speed up because they're trying, desperately, to keep the processors as cool as they can.
What you're experiencing is just normal. I doubt Yosemite will 'fix' anything like this. I've not much experience with HTML5 video, but it may run cooler, for all I know. You can check yourself by switching your video preferences on YouTube to HTML5 -> https://www.youtube.com/html5.

  • Loud fans when charging

Ive had look at previous posts and couldnt find anything to help so thought id ask my self.
Ive seen lots of people with battery life etc, and found that i could sleep mine for bout 4 hours then turn back on to bout ten minutes of charge, after a full charge that is.
So i thought a good idea to try calibrating before getting a replacement battery.
Plugged in power and quickly checked email, and read a few posts, nothing major that would max out mac book.
But when i charge (and i did notce this when i have charged it before, but put it down to me using it for ages) the fans go into over drive. Computer gets hot, just underneath near battery, but not on the actual battery. Fans almost sound like they do when i did a firmware update on my imac.
Can anyone help or suggest anything, or is this normal.
Hope i gve enough info, if not ask a way and hope we can find a solution.

My macbook pro i7 (2011 version) has a loud fan and a high cpu % when I have Skype on or when I am on Safari. My laptop would sometimes freeze for a while and it is usually hot. Has anyone else encounter this problem and know how to fix it? Thanks!

Skype is a very resource intensive activity...it has been reported on here users are seeing cpu temperatures on the order of 80-85 °C, within the limits of the cpu, but still hot to the touch.
Make sure nothing else is running so you keep the thermal load down.
