Mac A1181

My neice has a Mac Laptop model A1181 and she is at Central Michigan she needs Office 2010 and she is not sure if she buys the academnic version if it will install on her Mac being that version is PC based. Office 2010 for a Mac is supposed to be coming out later this year but she needs it now as school is starting. Thanks for any feedback on this.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Office 2010 has very few things that can't be done by existing Mac Office applications. http://www.neooffice.org/ has Word, Powerpoint and Excel compatibility with their free software. That MacBook would appear to be one of the original MacBooks. It may not have enough juice for the Mac version of Office when it comes out. That remains to be seen. However, you could install Windows virtualization on the machine if access to Access is necessary, or Mac OS X Mail's Exchange compatibility or web based access to Exchange Server is not a possibility. Virtualization options are documented here*:

  • Problem loading OSX on Mac A1181?

This unit stopped going to the desktop so I put another HDD with snow leopard on it from another macbook into this unit and it worked fine. I purchased a new HDD, installed it then loaded the Disk and it started going the installation process but when it comes to the Install Mac OSX screen, no hdd is listed? This was the same deal when I tried to reinstall the OSX on the original HDD but becuase the replacement HDD worked with the OS on it, that led me to believe that it was the original HDD at fault but now with the same deal with a new HDD,  I am not understanding what's going on here or what to do here? Help?

  • HT2347 Installing inkscape on mac osx 10.6

I downloaded the Inkscape, and it seems to be a mirror image, so I think it is not installing but it also does not work. I think it has to do with my mac being an older version (mac a1181 2.4/2x 1G/ 160) with mac osX 10.6 but the version of iinkscape is the latest I think (0.48.2-1-snowleopard.dmg)

I'd suggest you take this up in the Inkscape forums; you'll be more likely to get help there:

my mac a1181 has a totaly broken screen that cannot be used at all and i want to get my info from the hard drive off please help

You don't have an iBook.  You have a MacBook.  Boot with the T key, and connect a Firewire cable to it.  If the model you have is originally Firewire 400, and you have either an 800 or Thunderbolt machine, you can get adapters from http://www.macsales.com/ to connect the two.

When i tried to install the MAC OS, it identifies a hard drive with 3.6 TB and i'm not able to do the installation. I touhgt the new ard drive was bad but i was able to install windows XP. Any ideas what do i have to do?

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

  • Connecting extenal monitor to Mac Book A1181

Have been trying to connect my A1181 mac book to a LG W1943TB monitor using a Mini DVI-VGA adapter, when its fired off all I get are the random coulured dots. I was told I would have to download the video drivers into my A1181. I have not found the download, is there such a thing? Thanks
    Best Regards,
    George

You've got a few choices to make, based as usual on budget. Assuming you're using DV-rez foootage, in ascending price your options are:
    1. You camera is probably all you need - attach it via Firewire, as you will to digitise your footage, then attach the analog video out to your TV (there'll be a connector that ends in three RCA's). Cost = $0 if you have a camera.
    2. Buy an external firewire breakout box, like a Canopus, Sony or PyroAV. Connect it to your computer, then to the TV via the RCA'S as above. Cost ~$200.
    3. Buy an internal video card for your MacPro from Decklink or Aja (there are others). These are professional cards and will connect to your TV as before. Cost = $300 to $3000.

  • Can i install mac osx back again after installing windows 7 on my mac book a1181?

i have apple mac book a1181 white, but i had problem logging on as it was secured by a password, and i allready lost my recovery dvd, so i installed windows 7 on my mac book a1181 by deleting its partition from GTP to NTFS but i experienced problems after installing windows 7 as sound was not comming as i could not find sound drivers for macintosh, so now i plan again to restore my apple macbook a1181 back by reinstalling mac osx 10.5.8, how can i again install mac osx on my notebook and is it possible to re-install mac on my notebook? please give me some help.

Insert your OS X install disc and restart holding the C key, hold it down until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Choose your language and at the next screen from the top menu bar select Utilities-Disk Utility. Select your internal hard drive, click on the Partition tab and select 1 partition. Click on the Options button and select GUID partition scheme. Click OK. Choose to format the drive as Mac OS Extended Journaled. When Disk Utility is done and your drive is properly partitioned and formatted quit DU and go back to the installer screen and reinstall OS X. When you're up and running run software update a couple times to get everything up to date as far as you can with 10.5.8. Then consider upgrading to OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard for $19.99 here http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

  • A1181 Mac Book Folder with ? when trying to boot up

I have a 2006 A1181 Mac Book when booting up shows a folder with a ? mark. I don’t have the operating system that came with it. I replaced the hard drive and tried holding down the C key and inserting disk ver 10.4 still will not boot up. I can borrow and use OS 10.5.8 will this work or what Disk can I use.
    Thanks Fred

If your on 10.5 with a Intel Mac, I think Apple has jinxed the firmware so you can't boot from the 10.5 disk anymore.
So far several people, myself included, can't boot from a 10.5 OS X disk on a Intel Mac.
Your going to have to buy a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk, it's wayyy better than 10.5 anyway, faster and most stable even better than Lion. Have to buy iLife though as it doesn't come on the 10.6.3 retail disks, only free with grey disks.

  • Hi friends i installed window 7 on my macbook white a1181 2007 in single partition and now i want to install mac os plz guide me thanx

plz help me the guide to install mac os to my macbook A1181 thanx

That Mac came with Tiger, 10.4.6. With Windows 7 installed, I presume you have a Snow Leopard, 10.6.x DVD.
Since you've given the entire drive to Win 7, the only way to get OS X back on the drive is to erase and repartition it into two so you have one for each OS.
Boot to the SL DVD and go into Disk Utility first. Select the drive and change the partition graphic from the current one, to two. Size them however you prefer. Make sure to press the button below that graphic and be sure the partition map is GUID. Apply the changes.
Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. Once that's completed, apply all available updates for Snow Leopard. Then run Boot Camp to start the installation of Win 7 onto the other partition.

  • Mac Book A1181 BLACK (13-inch Late 2006)

    Hi,
I'm looking into upgrading my old Macbook and would greatly appreachiate some help with that.
The machine is a black Macbook from late 2006 with a 13" Screen. It has the 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 1Gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
It is currently running Mac Os X 10.4.11, but I have ordered the Snow Lion System 10.6
    (http://store.apple.com/at/product/MC573D/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard)
and would like to upgrade to that.
The reason for this is that some websites stopped working with 10.4 and the computer runns quite slow.
Now here are my questions: can I install the snow leopard system directly on a new Hard drive or do I have to install it on the old disk first?
I would like to upgrade also the hard drive and ram. Can I use any 2.5" Sata disk with a height of 9.5mm? And what about the ram chips, I understand that I can use at most 2GB on this machine?
Will these upgrades make the system run faster and more stable?
    Thanks for helping me out!

You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for third party programs compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
I recently upgraded an older MacBook (Early 2006 model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • MacBook 13.3" (A1181), 2.16 GHz, screen goes black once OS is loaded.

I have a MacBook 13 (model A1181, 2.16 GHz) that I bought from a friend.  Everything starts up fine, I get the chime, etc., until it loads the OS.  I have a brand new Apple hard drive; brand new Mac OS X Leopard disk; and have tried everything I can think of.  I have tried shining a light to see if the screen is just dim--no dice.  I have tried completely wiping the drive clean on my iMac and then reinstalling.  It gets all the way through the install, then the screen goes black when I'm trying to set my information up.  The screen stays up if it's installing the OS, and also if I have the hard drive disconnected on the logic board.  As soon as I load the OS, it goes black.  The rest of the machine is still running.  I have a spare logic board, so I put that in and I get the same problem.  What am I missing?  Any help would be appreciated.  It may be useful to know that I am a computer repair technician (I do component repairs at a motherboard/logic board level).  However, I believe all the hardware to be working.  I think it may be a firmware issue, but I can't get it to keep a screen long enough to do any software updates.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I actually considered that and replaced the inverter, as I couldn't find the cord to external display, but also to no avail.  Same thing happened.

  • How do I get Windows's off my MacBook and Mac osx back on?

I purchased a MacBook (A1181) off eBay "for parts" but the only thing it needed was a new battery. I turned it on and everything worked fine, only problem is that it's running Windows 7 professional and is password protected. When I contacted the eBay seller they said the Mac was supposed to be wiped clean and they could not help me because it was sold "for parts." I cannot log in to wipe and I don't have any original discs or any Mac osx discs. I want windows off and a fresh copy or snow leopard on my MacBook. PLEASE HELP

You can use a Snow Leopard retail install disk to erase the drive and install 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen
