Mac as web server

I am trying to set up a web site for my students using my computer. According to my Missing Manual it should be as easy as turning on web serving and providing my computer address. This isn't happening, so I've missed something! When testing the address a 'Server is not responding' message appears. I have a broad band connection to my AirPort Express. Can anyone help?
Thanks

If the Express is acting as the router, you have to tell it to forward the port to your machine (port mapping).
From Airport Utility help:
Directing network traffic to a specific computer on your network
To ensure that requests are properly routed to your web, AppleShare, or FTP server, or a specific computer on your network, you need to establish a permanent IP address for the server or computer, and provide “inbound port mapping” information to the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
To set up inbound port mapping:
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the password if necessary.
Click Advanced in the toolbar, and then click Port Mapping.
Click the Add button and choose a service from the Service pop-up menu (for example, Personal File Sharing).
Enter the IP address of the server in the Private IP Address field.
To use port mapping, you must configure TCP/IP manually on the computer that is running the web, AppleShare, or FTP server.
For more information about port mapping, see the document “Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility,” located at www.apple.com/support/airport.
I assume you enabled web serving through the Sharing pane of System Preferences so that the firewall will be automatically configured appropriately? If not, you'd need to take care of that.
Don't forget to make sure the machine is set to never sleep.

  • Set up Mac as Web Server

Hello. I would like to use my Mac as a test server for people outside of my network. Can I do this using FTP Access and Personal Web Sharing, or do I need to install Apache or some other web hosting software? It appears people have to be on my local network to use FTP Access and Personal Web Sharing.

That's an entirely different issue, and one not related to your Mac.
In order to allow others to access your computer, you must has a route to it from the Internet. How you set that up will depend on how you are connecting. Do you have a static IP from your service provider, or a dynamic one? Are you connected directly, or behind a router/firewall?
A typical home setup might have a broadband connection that comes to a router that acts as a DHCP server, switch, and firewall for the local LAN. It will provide local IP addresses from a pool and configure them to route through the router to the Internet. In that scenario, you would need to turn on Network Address Translation (NAT) on the router, and configure a static IP address for your Mac. Then, you need to enter a port forwarding rule on the router to forward requests from the WAN (Internet) to the target machine. Once that's done, you need only point browsers to the WAN-facing IP address of the router and traffic will route to the specific IP address on your LAN. If you want to be able to address you computer by name, rather than IP address, you would also need to register a domain name and maybe use a service like dyndns.org (for dyanmically assigned WAN addresses).
How you do all that, precisely, is a matter for you and the documentation for your particular brand of router to work out. From the standpoint of your Mac, you're pretty much finished.

  • So confused with Mac's web server MYSQL setup

I'm a recent Mac convert, and while I use to install apache~php~mysql on my PC I've been enjoying my pre-installed apache~php~mysql on my Mac... except one thing, I have no idea how to access MYSQL. I did a phpinfo(); check and it says that MYSQL has been enabled. I installed Sequel Pro to help manage MYSQL databases, but I can't log in. What's the default username and password? I just need to fill the following in:
    Name:
    Host:
    Username:
    Password:
Any amount of help would be great, thanks in advance~!

  • The server at Mac OS X Server Web Services requires a username and password

I am running SL Server 10.6.2, wiki works but when a person clicks an attached file in a wiki and then selects "open" they get a login popup with the notification The server at Mac OS X Server Web Services requires a username and password. It doesn't matter what they put into the login/pass it comes back. If they hit cancel then the document opens. If they click save then it saves with no issue. I can type in the admin login/pass of the server and it works. Does this mean the security settings to the location of the files is wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated!

By the way they are using Internet Explorer 7 when opening these documents.

  • Upload form problems on Mac web server with PHP

First time using a mac web server and I'm having a heck of a time getting a simple upload form to work in this environment. The errors I'm receiving are:
Warning: move_uploaded_file(/Library/WebServer/Documents/mydirectory/content/mwm/) [function.move-uploaded-file]: failed to open stream: Is a directory in /Library/WebServer/Documents/mydirectory/umin/uploadContent.php on line 66
    Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/private/var/tmp/php1pRrx5' to '/Library/WebServer/Documents/mydirectory/content/mwm/' in /Library/WebServer/Documents/mydirectory/umin/uploadContent.php on line 66
Usually this problem is resolved by changing permissions on the directory receiving the upload. I've already done that, and set the permissions to 777, though the problem still persists.
I'm basically defining my upload directory, and then moving the file thereafter:
    define('UPLOAD_DIR', '/Library/WebServer/Documents/mydirectory/content/'. $category . '/');
    move_uploaded_file($_FILES['uploadedFile']['tmp_name'], UPLOAD_DIR);
The rest of the script, without the move execution, works properly. Any help would be appreciated.

    BAH!
I had forgotten to add the name of the file to the move command:
    Fix here:
    move_uploaded_file($_FILES['uploadedFile']['tmp_name'], UPLOAD_DIR.$file);
    Thanks.

  • Mac OS X Server - Web Hosting & Media Server

Hi All - Need advice. I have MacPro and have purchased MacPro Server.
Here is what I plan to do with MacPro Server:
    1. Host couple of my personal websites, blogs etc.
    2. Use it as a iTunes Media Server so that I can access my iTunes content through VPN / Internet remotely.
I want to use my MacPro largely for Web development work (basically as a DEV environment) whereas MacPro Server will be my Production environment. I have a couple of questions and will be grateful for your advice:
    1. Is it a good practice to have iTunes Media Server on Mac OS X Server?
    2. Presently, I have all my iTunes library stored on 2 x 2TB hard drives within MacPro. I would really like to move these hard drives to my MacPro Server and import the content to iTunes there. Can I do it? Will I lose the ratings and other details?
    3. Will I be able to access iTunes on Mac OS X Server via Internet / VPN remotely?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • Making Mac OSX (10.8.5) Web Server available to public

I have successfully set up apache on my laptop ( Macbook Pro with Mac OSX (10.8.5)) and am able to access the html page via http://localhost
I have disabled firewall on my local router (tried port forwarding and DMZ before this) .
I have disable Mac OSX firewall (from System Preferences)
After all this my url is still not publicly accessible.
    What am I missing here?
    Any help is appreciated.

The web server would need to have a static address on the LAN. This wasn't your question, but exposing a web server to the Internet is dangerous and not something you should do without the skills of a system administrator.

  • C410a won't to mac with OSX 10.8 but is accessible from the web server or from older OSX

The c410a has ceased to behave with Mountain Lion.  The newer OS machines can still access via the embedded web server, but no other way.  Older mac running Lion has no issues
Since I recently upgraded Norton on the newer machines, I suspect that may be an issue.

  • Install a test JSP Web Server on a mac for a PHP developer

I am looking to write some simple JSP pages. I need a Java web server and the development kit [JSPWDK or is it JSWDK?]
I have only Java SE 6.0 installed on my mac. I have Snow Leopard OS.

Will the Solaris Sparc version work for a mac?
I have apache on my mac. I normally use PHP but for a web project.
    I need the JSP server.
Can I install the JSP Server on my mac along with the Apache server. This is only for development.
I have got Zend Framework for PHP running on my mac so I don't want to mess up too much for this test.
Thanks for any advice or any pages anywhere to help but I can install from a tar file if there isn't too much configuration.

    Hi,
If you need to install a full development environment with Tomcat in Mac OSX take a look at my tutorial at http://jmaw.blogspot.com.es/2012/08/minimo-entorno-de-desarrollo-java-mac.html. The blog has translation if you need it.
I hope I can help. Also you can. Install both servers taking care of the ports, usually Tomcat listens requests by the port 8080 while Apache server listens requests by the default http port 80.
    Best regards,
    Jmaw

  • Old Web Server Software on Mac OS X Server 10.4.6?

I am wondering why my apache that is running is only 1.3.33 accordign to my webmin tool that my friend installed, the php and sql are old too.
I'm not a unix guru by any means and I want to upgrade these and enable GD etc, but I'm running 4 or more virtual servers by using the server tools and I don't want to break the builtin functionality of the server tools. Is apple going to upgrade this stuff on os x server?

Mac OS X Server ships with both Apache 1.3.33 and Apache 2.2 (in /opt/apache2).
You're more than welcome to disable Apache 1.3.x and use 2.2 if you prefer.
However, the Server Admin GUI will only currently work with Apache 1.3.x, so if you do you'll need to manage your configurations manually.

  • I delete contacts on my mac, but they dont delete on my iphone or ipad, why? If I delete off the web server they then delete

I have icloud all logged in on my ipad, iphone and macbook pro.
When deleting contacts on any of the products they do not delete off the others.
They do delete off the iphone/ipad/macbook when deleting off the icloud webs server, but when adding someone to my phone I want it to delete off all the other products.
    Calendars all work.
    Just contacts is the issue.
    How can this be resolved?

    Have you emptied Trash?
When you delete data from a USB drive, you must empty Trash before you disconnect it from the MBP.
    Ciao.
