Mac Book Hard Drive upgrade

What will be a good brand or what brand does apple use for a late 2008 Mac Book Pro I wanted to update the one on my computer with a 500 GB. HD since it has a 320 GB HD.
Second question can I use the 320 GB HD from my Mac Book Pro and update my Mac mini with it?

were you looking for the 5400rpm or 7200rpm?
I have the 500gb, 7200 seagate which has worked fine. no clicking or anything. temp wise, I think it's much cooler than the 250gb factory Hitachi that I replaced.
if you have an Intel Mini, the old MBP drive will work fine as an upgrade.

  • Render Files Are Being Saved onto My Mac Book Hard Drive...?

    Hi All -
So, I was highly curious as to why I have such little disk space on the hard drive on my Mac Book Pro and discovered that there is a file called "Render Files" on my hard drive which contains an enormous amount of video footage from movies I've edited in FCP.
I don't understand why these files are going into my hard drive...? I have an external My Book connected to my computer. In FCP under System Settings, on the Scratch Book tab, Video Capture, Video Render and Audio Render are all checked off and to the right of this my My Book is listed. So I thought everything would be going into my My Book external drive.
However, I looked into My Book and noticed that there is a file that says Capture Scratch that seems to have all of the captured footage of these movies. So, I'm thoroughly confused as to what this "Render Files" file is doing on my hard drive and how can I just get all video footage to automatically store on my external My Book drive. I'm afraid that if I delete the files in the "Render Files" that I'm going to create a real disaster.
Any advice or clarification on this would be most appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi -
Couple of options for you to consider:
Open the Render Folder that you have found on your internal hard drive and sort the files by date. Are the files recent / from the current project that you are working on?
If they are then I would go to
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
download Preference Manager and trash your preferences. This will cause you to lose your current preferences, favorites, etc., which you will have to manually reset - but often clears up strange behavior in FCP. I would then go back and reset my Scratch Disk settings to the external drive.
Is there at Render Files folder on your external drive? Open that and sort be date and see if your current project render files are there.
If they are, that would mean the render files you found on your internal drive are from projects prior to you assigning the files to your external drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Clone Mac Book hard drive onto Mac Mini

    Hi All,
I own a 2009 MacBook Pro and have very recently bought a Mac Mini.
I would like to clone the MacBook Pro's hard drive onto the Mac Mini, so that, when switching it on, the Mini is an exact replicate of the MacBook Pro, including all content, software and other bits.
I own an external hard drive that is large enough to contain all of the MacBook Pro's data.
Could someone help me in describing the detailed procedure for me to clone the drive as desired?
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, this will not work as you won't be able to boot the Mini because Macs cannot boot from an OS version older than what they came with (I assume the Mini is running Mountain Lion or mavericks?). You can, however, transfer your files, etc.
FWIW, please update your profile: you are not running iOS on the Mini as iOS is for iDevices, not computers.

  • I want to partition my Mac Book hard drive into 3 Partitions

I am running Mac 10.4.9 and want to partition my machine, I guess I can use the Mac OS install CD
I have with me, can some one provide some instructions on how this can be done.

why is partitioning not supported for Tiger.
Good question, but all I can say is that built in Disk handling & repair has always been quite limited on Macs.
Mac OS install disks come with a disk utility which can do the job, but I found none.
Not sure what you found none of!? Disk Utility is on the Install Disk...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
But you still don't want to partition it if possible, and those two APPs means there is absolutely no need to.

  • How to remove and destroy Mac Book hard drive

I have an old MacBook no longer working, won't even fire up.  I wish to dispose of it but even though it is not working I would like to make sure everything on it is wiped.  So I guess I need to remove the hard drive and smash it? How do I remove it?

I would remove the cover and find the drive..... I have not done that myself, so I have no detailed suggestion.

  • Mac Book Hard Drives and how can I upgrade it???

I understand that how to replace it... I am just iffy on what brand and type of HDD... I was wondering that if any of you have changed it out and what type of HDD you have replaced it with...
If you can help that be great thanks...

It depends on whether you want speed or storage capacity. Unfortunately, you cannot get both in a notebook drive.
For speed there are Seagate and Hitachi 100 GB 7200 RPM drives.
For size there are 5400 RPM drives with capacities up to 160 GB and 4200 RPM with a capacities up to 200 GB.
    These are your basic options.

  • Hard Drive upgrade

I'm considering a hard drive upgrade but i dont know crap about them. I went over to newegg because i heard it was a good site and found this one......
"Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000LPVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive"
The only problem is, I dont know wheter it is compatible with my Early 2009 13 inch macbook pro..... Should I go with this one or are there better ones out there? I'm not really worried about price. I was aiming to get a 500gb. Thanks.

It is compatilbe if it's a 2.5" notebook SATA II 3.0 Gb/s model. Take Csound1's advice. If you buy a WD drive or any other makers' drives do not purchase any "green" drives as they don't work well in Macs.
If you want better performance get a drive rated for 7200 RPM with as large a cache as possible (typically 16 MBs.) Other makers to consider include Hitachi, Seagate, and SamSung.
If you want faster speed consider the Seagate XT500 hybrid. Or visit OWC and look into their DataDoubler that enables you to replace the optical drive with an SSD (or another HDD.)

  • Hard Drive Upgrade - Incorrect Capacity Shown In Disk Utility After Installation

I have an older model Macbook Version 2.1 that had an 80GB hard drive installed.  I have just installed a Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB internal hard drive upgrade and successfully cloned my data over using Carbon Copy Cloner.  The problem I have encountered is that only 98.1GB of capacity is shown in Disk Utility for the new hard drive.  After starting the computer using my bootable copy via an external USB drive, I formatted the newly installed 500GB drive with the appropriate Apple formatting (e.g. GUID and Mac OS Extended Journaled) but it only shows 98.1GB of space available on the new drive.  I was able to successfully clone the information from my bootable back-up of the old drive to the new drive but I just don't have the full 500GB capacity available to me.
What should I do?  Is this a problem with the new hard drive or is there something I need to change on my Macbook to "see" the whole capacity of my new drive?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Dave

    Hi Andrew,
When I formatted the new drive did it with 1 partition and it displays a TOTAL of 98.1GB free space (both in Disk Utility and About This Drive).  As far as I can tell, the Macbook is treating the new WD drive as if it is only a 98.1GB drive rather than the 500GB drive that it is.
    Thoughts?
    Dave

  • How do I reinstall my operating system after hard drive upgrade on MacBook pro?  I have Snow Leopard install disc

How do I reinstall my operating system (Snow Leopard) after a hard drive upgrade. I did a Time Machine backup before the new hard drive was installed. I put in the Snow Leopard install disc and don't get the icon I'm supposed to double click to install Snow Leopard and then the backup.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Is the new HHD in the MBP?
Is the new HDD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Where is the old HDD? In an enclosure?  What is on the old HDD, your user data?  Is the Snow Leopard System on it?
Do you have a separate Time Machine Disk with your user data?
Answers to these questions should give an exact status of your situation so that one can proceed in the right direction.

  • Spinning beach ball after hard drive upgrade

    Im running a macbook pro i7 2.2ghz  8gb ram  version 10.6.8 SL
I recently upgraded my 128gb ssd to a 512gb ssd drive.  I cloned the drive to new drive and ever since then, I get the spinning beach ball very often whereas I never got it prior to the hard drive upgrade.  Is there anything I can check or do to eliminate the freeze ups?  It is VERY annoying.  Or do I just need to do a fresh install on the new hard drive.
    thanks in advance

Did you properly prep the drive first:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Cannot Erase/Format External Western Digital "My Book" Hard Drive

I have a brand new Western Digital "My Book" Hard Drive that I would like to use for SuperDuper clone backup. I am attempting to format the disk for Mac-OS Extended first.
When I connect the HD to my MBP via USB, an error message pops up saying "Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I then enter Disk Utility. The Western Digital HD is shown in the left pane as a 596.2 GB External Media. The Volume Format is shown as MS-DOS (FAT).
I attempted to erase/format for Mac-OS Extended (Journaled). Selecting the volume in the left pane and then clicking erase returns the error message "Disk Erase Failed with the error: File System Formatter Failed." Just for kicks I tried to erase/format for regular Mac-OS Extended, same result. It will let me erase/format for MS-DOS (FAT), but that's how it's already formatted and doesn't help me.
I tried to erase/format on my wife's MBP, exact same results. Am I doing something wrong or do I have a problem with the external hard drive?
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Barry
