Part of what you are noticing is the difference in how hard drive capacities are reported by the manufacturer vs. how your computer interprets capacity.
Hard drive manufacturers report capacity using base 10 numbers where 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Your computer which is based on binary uses as base 2 calculation and considers 1GB to equal 1,073,741,824 Bytes.
Look at your 60GB hard drive capacity as 60,000,000,000 and divide that by what the computer considers as 1GB 1,073,741,824. Your result will be around 55.879GB.
That accounts for where 4+ GB of the "60GB" went right from the start.
Formatting also takes a small amount of space for cataloging data. This varies depending on operating system and the type of format used. This is another reason manufacturers never advertise a "formatted" capacity for their drives.
If you have not installed anything else on the computer yet then yes the rest is being used by the OS and whatever else has been installed on it by Apple.
You may wish to un-install Trial software and any other applications you know you will never use in order to regain some hard drive space.
Sorry if this was a lengthier answer than you wanted. Tried to balance between giving details while leaving a lot out of what is really a much more technical answer than I gave.

I have a mac book OSX 10.6.8. I didn't convert my mobileme account in time. Is there anyway to back up my computer to icloud with this version?
I have read that Snow Leopard isn't support by Icloud. I am thinking of upgrading to Maverick, but first need to back up my computer.
Also, if I upgrade, will my programs such as the Adobe Creative Suite stay on my computer? You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud; and you cannot use most of iCloud's facilities with Snow Leopard. You should get an external hard disk and make a clone - that's the safest possible backup as you can boot from it in an emergency.
You will need to check that your Mac meets the requirements for Mavericks:
OS X v10.6.8 or later
2GB of memory
8GB of available space
and the supported models are:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Programs already on your Mac will stay on your Mac but you should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible and need updating - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table -
which uses imovie 11'.. previous lap top was mac book osx 10.5.8.. new one is mac book pro 10.6.6.. any help out there! i'm pretty useless at this stuff, might be really simple???
Thanks for nothing, as usual, Apple.
I had to redo the whole project from scratch on Windows Movie Maker.
Now I know which brand to trust on my next purchase. -
can i upgrade hard drive on my mac book osx 10.5.8?
An Early 2008 can be upgraded...to see a good selection of options, go the OWC site at http://www.macsales.com they are Mac specialists and only sell things they have tested and can guarantee to be compatible. They also have on-line videos that will show you how to do the replacement.

an you delete a text messages from your mac Book OSX 10.9.2 and not delete them from your iphone 5 running version 7.0.4Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
Also consider deleting and reinstalling the Mail Account in question. -
Mac Book OSX 10.6.8: Time machine error or corrupted external hard drive?
Mac Book OSX 10.6.8: Time machine runs fine and no error messages show after the process is complete. However, none of the new files or documents are saved to the back up. It is as if the drive is recopying an older backup and placing a new time stamp on it.
Nevermind. My friend was looking in the wrong folder for his files. They were saved under the desktop folder in the Users folder not the overall Desktop folder.

1520andrewIf your Mac is running v10.4.11 as your profile suggests, iTunes v9,1,1 is the highest you can go running Tiger.
See if you can do this with iTunes...
Launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click iTunes > Check for Updates... -

anybody knows if i can install memory from imac 24'' to mac book intel 2,2 (memory type :PC2 6400s -666-12
thanxventureboy wrote:
The older iMac 24's take DDR2-667 modules, whereas the new Macbooks take DDR3. You can't use memory from the former in the latter, or vice versa.
Yeah - but this is the original MacBook forum, and the model series given (MacBook 2,2) would seem to indicate a mid-2007 MacBook which came with PC2-5300 (DDR2 667) 200-pin SODIMMs standard.
It should work, but can't be guaranteed. Most memories should have the "serial presence detect" EEPROM that will list all supported speeds. The SPD EEPROM is a small, permanently-programmed memory that contains coded information (in a standardized format) for all the various configurations that the memory can support. Most PC2-6400 modules should be backwards compatible in PC2-5300 applications. They come in the same "form factor" of a 200-pin SODIMM.
It's worth an effort to try. The worst (with due physical care) that could happen is that it doesn't work and fails to get past power on self test. -
HT1444 How do I get i-cloud on my mac book OS X 10.5.8
How do I get i-cloud on my Mac Book OSX 1o.5.8?
The first thing that has to be determined is exactly what version of OS X your Mac can run.
Either you can look up the spec for the various versions of OS X and make the determination yourself or you can provide the spec on your Mac here and we will look it up for you.
The first step will be to upgrade to Snow Leopard which will require you to purchase the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple and install that.

Safari question here... Can I purchase a browser update for my mac book? I have OSX 10.6.8 and the "update software" function won't let me get past Safari 5.1.10. Please tell me I don't need a new computer just yet... Thx!!
You need to upgrade OS X.
Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -
erased mac book pro (2009), how can i reinstall osx? it won't recognize old system discs
Did you try:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you don't have the original discs that came with the computer, then you can install the retail version of Snow Leopard:
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
fees may apply.
6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
terms apply. -
Mountain Lion OSX Mac Book Continues to CRASH?
After Upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion, my Macbook Pro continues to crash over and over. The only common denominator that I see is this occurs with safari and facebook when looking thru pictures or if the browser is left open with facebook open. I can walk away and come back and the Macbook has rebooted with a panic crash. This is consistantly happening.
MacBook Pro
15-inch, Mid 2010
Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB
Serial Number W802507CGQL
Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
These panic attacks did NOT occur in Lion or any previous versions of OS X just in Mountain Lion. Any ideas or suggestions from the peanut gallery?

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Ok, after some considerable troubleshooting and the various suggestions, i have narrowed the issue to (but not exclusively) to:
* Mt Lion
* Safari
* Facebook (looking thru pictures)
With all these variables with my Macbook Pro, and can reproduce crashes at will. With Mt. Lion, Firefox, and Facebook (looking thru pictures) does not crash the Mac Book. So for now I am simply using Firefox to avoid crashes.
I is just darn shame that there wasn't more QA Testing for Mt Lion and all of the versions of hardware and "Apple" software to prevent these issues. From what I have seen on this forum, the problem is widespread and the solutions are not consistant. So does Apple really know what is going on. With everyone sending crash reports to Apple, you would think they would have a root cause discovered and fixed by now.
Oh well... -
