Mac book pro freezes hard drive failure?

Hi mac users,
I'm new to mac. But i have a problem. My lap top mac. Is freezing and is unresponsive for 20 minutes at a time. IF i click one thing the entire screen is frozen until it can complete the one command.
I went into disk utility and clicked on first aid to try and do repair disk. Which it is doing it say's will take about 8 hours.
The box is displaying this infomation over and over again.
Open error 5: "input/output error" on Applications/textedit.app/contents/resources/english.ipro...
Open error 5: "input/output error" on System libary/coresystems/apple8211agen.app.conte...
I have no clue why it's saying or why it's repeated a thousand times. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software. That didn't work. It still giving the same error. I tried reformatting it and rebooting it from the original CD it came with. It seemed to work for a couple of days. Now it's back to acting really really slow.
It's not covered by apple care or a warranty. So i know it's going to cost lots of money to fix. I was hoping i could fix it myself.
My guess it's 1. hard drive failure or 2. I need to reformat it again and reinstall the programs again. Though i don't want to do that. Because it takes all day long.
Thanks for any helpful suggestions. I hope i can get this computer fixed soon.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sometimes there are just some damaged sectors on the hard drive, but that does not mean the drive is totally unusable. The first step is to make sure your data is backed up as completely as possible. If you aren't able to access your Mac normally, sometimes you can restore data with data recovery tools listed on my backup FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Sometimes then you can repair access to the drive by repairing the directory*:
http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Since a bad directory, and a damaged hard drive can often elicit the same symptoms, data recovery initially is a must, and only then repair the directory.
If after repairing the directory, you aren't able to use your computer, the latter file you mention may have to deal with your wireless drivers. The first one simply has to do with TextEdit, which can be custom reinstalled from the operating system disc that installed the operating system on your Mac. Let us know if you need help with this.

What is the "other" category on my mac book pro for hard drive space? I found out that it is taking a whole lot of my computer's space...how do I find what it is and optimize it?

If you need to remove files for space see The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing space on your hard drive. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
Under no circumstances should you try deleting files outside of your Home folder.

  • Mac book pro + external hard drive plus desktop with ethernet router combo

Can anyone advise - for or against / solutions that might be possible as I'm considering time capsule.
    Currently
Desktop = Mac Pro - 230GB hard drive no wireless card.
One ethernet port going to router into which my broadband is piped. Out of the router - ethernet to plug in lap top in other room (hubby not so found of wireless).
Back up = 500GB external formac drive (noisy and vibrates) connected via fire wire. All my photos and music go direct to the formac drive (are not on desktop or laptop).
I do backup of documents from desktop to the external hardrive manually.
I have a mac book pro which I access the internet by the the ethernet (but don't think I can file share because of the router which I think just pipes the internet to both computers).
*What I would like to do*
    1) Access documents from the desktop vire wireless when working on laptop.
    2) Continue to store photos and music without clogging up my desktop hard drive.
    3) Get a quieter external hard drive (been noisy since day 1)
    4) Easy backup of of photos and music (at the moment only one copy exists on hard drive which I am concerned about (other than DVD).
    5) Turn wireless off when not working on laptop - hubby concerned about privacy and I work from home so have confidential material I have to guarentee is secure.
Can any one point me to whether time capsule and or other bits would meet my needs?
    Thanks - Lou

    1) is doable I use that functionality Even from Pennsylvania to Michigan
    2) I use the TC as backup for my primary hard drive although I always use two back up hard drives for my primary. I use the Finder not Time Machine.
    3) The LaCie d2 or the quadra work fine with TC. They are quiet and sleep appropriately.
    4) is doable and related to your one.
    5) secure your router and wireless setup is not a problem.
You can also use the setup of the external to interact with ATV. Like streaming movies to ATV

  • Mac Book Pro New Hard drive problems

I have a Mac Book Pro 13 inch that has a failed hard drive so I purchased a new Seagate 500gb SATA solid state hard drive that states it will work for a MB PRO. When I try to create a new  1 partition as Mac OS Extended Journaled I get a "Partiton Failed with the error: File system formatter failed". The drive shows up as read/write and Verified but unformatted. When I try to repair the disk I get a disk Utility can't repair this disk. What am I doing wrong any suggestions.

Check all connection to the drive. Boot the system from a boot disk of some kind that has Disk Utilities on it.
Erase the drive with DU. Then partition as one big partition using MBR (Master Boot record) in the options. Then format it as FAT32. If that works then go back into DU and re-partition GUID Journaled.
If the first part of my suggestions above fail then I'd say you have either a bad drive, doubtful but possible, or there is something wrong with your MBP and that is why the first/original drive couldn't be read anymore.

  • Verify disk failure on Mac Book Pro Toshiba hard drive

I tried to run a verify disk on the Toshiba Hard drive on my computer and the following error keeps repeating. It will let me run a repair but the same error occurs after every verify.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You will be glad that's not a hardware problem, but it looks like your EFI partition is damaged. That volume is used to store firmware updates, as they are installed during the startup. If you don't have any problem while turning on your MacBook and you have an old MacBook, you can ignore these steps, but it's better to solve this problem.
If you want to fix the problem, you will have to format the hard drive and reinstall OS X, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Then, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start up in Recovery, open Disk Utility and erase the hard disk > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html A healthy EFI partition will be made.
Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. When the installation finishes, Mac OS X will ask you to restore the backup, so follow the steps.
If you had OS X Lion before upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion, use Recovery Disk Assistant to create Recovery HD onto a USB drive and start up from it by holding the Option (Alt) key

  • Trying to restore my Mac OS  after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

I am trying to restore my Mac OS after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combinationcommand-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

i need to use an hp 6215 printer with my mac book pro.  the driver installation disk doesn't work.  where can i get a driver that will work?

With the Lion it is essentially unnecessary to resort to external driver disks. What's more, most of those disks are incompatible with the OS and should not be used. The system already carries a wide variety of printer description files (aka PPDs, which is what modern printing systems use as "drivers") for a lot of brands. And there was an HP printer update just two days ago.
Just checked in mine and did indeed find that the HP OfficeJet 6200 Series, with or without Fax, is covered with the latest update.
So just go thru the motions of creating a proper printer instance:
Make sure the Mac "sees" the printer on the network.
System Preferences / Print & Scan
Click on the + button on the left column
Select the appropriate type of printer, will use IP for the rest of this
Select HP Jetdirect - Socket, default for HP network printers
Type the IP address or look it up
Name the printer for easy identification on the print dialog
Let the Mac identify the printer model or manually choose the driver
    Click Add.
Once the instance pops up in the list, can click on Options & Supplies for further config.

Please verify you got this screen as well:
I had the same after updating fronm 10.7.1 to 10.7.2 tonight. Not even a re-install of the OS X 10.7 and Combo update to 10.7.2 helped. I think this time Apple messed up big time with the 10.7.2 update and some Mac Books (my case: MacBook 15" Mid 2009 = MacBookPro5,3)

  • Using Time Capsule to back up Mac Book Pro and external drive

we're changing our main computer in the house to our mac book pro, which is not currently backed up, so i'm thinking of buying a time capsule. our current main machine is an old pc with two external hard drives connected....one used as the main file storage location and the second as a back up location. the main large files on these drivers are photo's, videos and scanned documents. can i use the time capsule to back up the mac book with an external hard drive connected to it? i'm thinking of leaving all the photo's, videos, documents, etc. on the external harddrive but want to be able to back it up to the time capsule as well as backing up the mac book pro. can backing up the external hard drive be set up to activate automatically daily as I think the mac book can? thanks

This is not as simple as it could be..
Firstly the Mac can read the external drives via the PC if they are shared to the network.. it cannot read them directly plugged into the Mac or the TC.
Also the TC is not really designed to store files.. it is a location for backups by TM..
Read some of the stuff Pondini.. our local Time Machine expert.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Q3 here is relevant. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
The hard drives would have to be plugged directly into the Mac to be backed up and they would have to be reformatted to Mac format. So you would need to offload the files.. format and then load the files back.. no trivial task.

  • 1st gen mac book pro and SSD drive overheating

Sorry if this has been answered before but I found it hard to find my particular stiruation listed here.  I need some advice!
I have a 1st gen mac book pro 2.33 GHz with 3GB of RAM (I belive its two 2GB modules).
I recently replaced the dead CD drive with an adapter (from ebay) that turns it into a second drive, and installed a 120GB OCZ SSD drive.  This drive is not the startup drive and my 320 GB drive is a backup/storage.
While I was in there I replaced the thermal grease - it had been running hot for ages and I figured that dried out grease could be the reason.  I got some artic silver paste, carefully removed the logic board, cleaned off the new paste, and sparingly applied new paste.  Since I took out the fans in the process I cleaned those and the heat sync too. (all via info online, videos and infomational pages, etc, not with wild abandon)
Everything seems to be running fine (I watched some movies fromt he hard drive.  youtube made it run a bit hot but ok) except when the computer goes to sleep or I close the lid.  Then the computer gets crazy hot and the fans are in overdrive and it won't wake up from sleep.  The power adapter also gets super super hot.
I reset the PRAM and ran permissions, also updated the operating system - its not 10.6.8.
I *just* reset the SMC (we'll see if that has any effect).
I thought I'd ask here before opening up the machine again and poking around.
    Thank yoiu for any advice!

ok, so I think this is the issue - it has to do with the fact that my regular hard drive is a seagate.  This thread is pretty much what has bene happening to me.

  • Mac Book Pro freezing

Hi all. My 3 year old Mac Book Pro is starting to freeze on a daily basis. I have to hold the power button in and start all over agian on my projects. This is more of what I would expect from a windows machine.
Can anyone help with advice on a fix for this.
    Thanks in advance.
    Will

    Hi Will,
I had the exact same problem as you a couple of days ago, here with a 2+ year old mac.
When the mac turns on hold Command+Option+P+R just before the grey screen appears and hold these until the mac restarts and gives you 3 beeps. This just resets the PRAM and NVRAM. These can lose their data due to an old or dying battery, which has been my problem.
This fixed my sudden freezes which required a restart.
If this doesnt work just post and ill give some other tips, but im almost sure this will fix the problem
    Good luck!!

  • Mac book pro freeze at login

hi everyone, I have an issue with my 2010 mac book pro running os x 10.8
I have it running on mountain lion, I didn't really have any problem running it on mountain lion for a few weeks then one day I decided to install an anti virus program called avira. In the process of installing it, my mbp froze, so I did a hard reboot by holding the power button. I restarted and everything ran fine and the anti virus was installed. I began running a system scan and my laptop became really slow (I was getting the rainbow circles frequently) then it froze again. I did another hard reboot and now the furthest I've gone was the log in page. I am allowed to type in my passcode but when I press anything the rainbow circle comes on. Nothing will work after that the only thing I can do is to hard reboot it.
will someone please tell me what's going on?
I've had had this mbp for 2 years without any problem.
I haven't talked to anyone from apple but I've been researching online. Should I reinstall mountain lion or do I have to restore everything?

As suggested above, boot in safe mode.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to re-download or even reinstall the software in order to get rid of it.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.
