Mac Book Pro takes forever to wake from sleep

In the last few weeks, my MBP has started taking forever to wake up if it's asleep for any lengthy period of time. I've checked the logs to see if it is any particular program slowing things. It comes up dark, the goes to a greyed out screen with a progress bar across the bottom. When the normal color screen appears, the trackpad won't work and I get a spinning beach ball if I try to use it. Eventually, the beach ball stops and the trackpad activates, then I wait some more until the cursor blinks in the password box.
I'm assuming this is some sort of deep sleep or hibernation but, for the first time ever, my work PC wakes up faster than my personal Mac.
Any suggestions. It's happening with my wife's MBP also.
I'll confess to being spoiled as I used to have a Macbook Air with SSD so it awoke instantly, but this is ridiculous.  I open my laptop and go get coffee waiting to use it.
Mountain Lion..fully updated.
Disk and Permissions repaired.

Didn't change anything. Thanks for the suggestion but didn't work.
Here's the console log if anyone can tell anything. As you can see, it took about a minute and a half to wake up. Doesn't sound like long until you are sitting watching the spinning beach ball.

  • Why do USB drives plugged into USB hubs make my Mac Book Pro (Retina late 2013) wake from sleep?

I have 2 x USB hubs, a Logitech USB 2.0 hub and a Broway USB 3.0 hub. Tested both and both seem to be the cause of my late 2013 Mac Book Pro waking from sleep. I ran syslog to find out why (syslog |grep -i "Wake reason") and the reason I got back was "kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: XHC1" - this means nothing to me, but it didn't take too much mucking about to hunt the problem down and figure out it was the USB hub with any USB drive attached. If the drive is attached directly to the computer. No problem, computer sleeps fine.
This was a problem I encountered (and never solved) with OSX 10.6.8, a 2008 Macbook Pro the same Logitech USB 2.0 hub, but with different drives. I put the problem down to a bug that never got solved in an old system. But I am simply AMAZED after my update to a new MBP and new system that it is still about almost 6 years, a dozen MBP's and 4 systems later.
The other problem is that not only does the USB drive/ USB hub combo wake the computer it also loses the drive upon sleep and mounts it again upon wake. Then repeats this process every couple of minutes. And it obviously doesn't eject the drives properly because each time I return to the computer after I put it to sleep or let it go to sleep I get a giant list of "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notifications about it. Which I'm guessing could eventually cause some file damage.
I've tried combinations of different drives, different hubs (a Belkin and a no-name Chinese brand 2.0 hub) and the problem persists. Is there a solve to this problem? I'm surprised to see so little posts on forums about this. Am I just unlucky and got another combination of faulty/problematic hardware, or is this a real problem that exists for everyone? If not I would love to know if people have found winning combos of USB hubs and drives. But if it is, then it HAS to be solved.
If you have a Macbook Pro, then you are limited to 2 USB outlets, this is obviously a bare minimum and I would say that 95% of people using their laptop computer in the office or at home have a hub, and very likely a USB drive attached to it. I know actual Apple reps don't really pay much attention to the community support posts, but I've got 6 months worth of Applecare left and would like suggestions about how to get Apple's attention about this problem.
BTW Jettison (a 3rd party app that ejects drives properly before sleep) is not a solve. It is a 3rd party app that tries to fill a hole in a broken system. I don't want to eject my drive upon sleep, I want it to got the **** to sleep.

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?

    Good luck & happy computing!

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.
    There is more info here.

I am having trouble getting my My Mac Book Pro 15" Retina to wake up with an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse while Docked in a Hengedock vertical docking station. The Keyboard and mouse work great with the laptop lid open but when closed in the docking station the bluetooth signal does not seem to transmit.  Is there a setting that can be changed to allow an Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to wake the computer while docked?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

You may want to boot from your original OS X DVD - hold D on statup - and that way run Apple Hardware Test

  • My Mac Book Pro using Mountain Lion goes to sleep unwontedly.

I am running long calculations on my Mac Book Pro and it keeps going to sleep after a few minutes. I have reset the energy saver to never, but it didn't change anything. I have gone into the security panel and reset the time to 5 hours, but that doesn't work either, what do I do?

    Hi Illaass,
I am using version 3. I have used the apple/settings on my mac. The headset is appearing there and it is selected there. In the Rosetta Stone select/find window nothing shows up. It is blank. But the volume bars react when I speak and sliding the fader has the expected effect of raising and lowering the input. There is just no device showing up as the selected input device in the Rosetta Stone software.
I have done everything my Mac instructions say to uninstall and reinstall the Rosetta Stone software properly.
I'm guessing the problem may be in the licensing. I installed it first on the old hard drive that crashed. Maybe that used the terms of the license and now installing it in the new hard drive violates the license somehow. So that's why it will not work properly. It allows me to open the lessons and asks me if I want to continue from where I left off. I click continue. Then it asks me if I want to register the software. I click the tab for already registered software and click continue. Then nothing happens. So again I click on the button that indicates I want to continue lessons from where I left off. The same process happens with it asking me if I want to register the software. And it will not proceed through a lesson.

  • New Mac Pro 2008, no response, wake from sleep?

Hi all I have had my mac Pro 2.8 octo for a week or so (the stock model, ati card 2gb ram etc) and this morning it would not wake from sleep?, the front light was pulsing, but no response from the keyboard or mouse, I also tried a quick push on the power button, and nothing?
I had to reboot the machine, and it now seems ok, it will wake ok from the keyboard,
I know a lot of people are having problems with the machine retarting automatically when trying to wake, but has anyone experienced a frozen sleeping machine?

I may have have run into similar problems. This morning my mac pro was frozen (no response to keyboard, nothing on my monitor) and had its graphic card fan running at full speed just like it does for a few seconds at startup. I have energy server configured to put the mac pro to sleep after 1 hour of inactivity. Other possible pieces of relevant information:
    - I have the mac pro hooked up to the UPS with a USB cable
    - I have Windows XP installed with bootcamp and am using the bootcamp partition in VMware fusion. I do not suspend windows inside the virtual machine and just keep windows running all the time
    - The machine was drawing 120w from the UPS while frozen

  • HT1338 As soon as I switch on my Mac book Pro, I get a sound from the optical drive. Is it normal??

It is a 13" MAC book pro bought about a month back.

In addition to checking system preferences/sound/output and selecting built in if that does not work, make sure volume is up and mute not checked.
You can try the following, Take a set of headphones and plug theim in and out several times (there is a micro switch that sometimes gets stuck)
Go to applications>utilities>Audio MIDI set up, see if you can select built in there, make sure volume is uo mute not checked.
    Try a NVRAM/PRAM reset:
Power off, power back on holding the following keys   OPTION + COMMAND + P + R
Continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times, then release, reboot

  • Newest 8-core Mac Pro won't always wake from sleep.

Recently I have been experiencing my Mac Pro not always waking up from sleep. It is a 2.4 Ghz 8-Core running Snow Leopard. I am using a USB keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. I am noticing that it is becoming more frequent and it's starting to worry me with how expensive this computer is.  If I had to guess, I would guess that it happens more often after long sleep durations. The only way to get it to turn on is by holding down the power to turn it off and then doing a reset. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can any Mac gurus specify what is going wrong?

  • MacBook Pro kernel panic on wake from sleep

I need some advice. Over the past few days, my MacBook Pro has been experiencing kernel panics when I open the screen and it wakes from sleep. The panic is immediate; there is no lag or time between opening the computer and the initiation of the event. It appears to be intermittent however and I wanted to get some input on this before I start troubleshooting it. Perhaps I may need to have Apple take a look at the unit but I would like to solve the issue (if possible) myself.
One thing I did notice is that the kernel panics started only after I recently updated Mac OS X with the most recent Security Update 2006-003, Quicktime 7.1 and Front Row 1.2.2. Not sure if this is related however, it is interesting that the panics started almost immediately following the software update.
    Here is the panic log:

MacBook Pro 2 GHz 1 GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

One other thing I noticed that could or could not be the problem but is sure curious is the option in the Energy Saver control pane for automaticly dimming the screen before sleep. I first noticed when I got my MacBook Pro that this option was enabled without it be marked as on. I checkmarked it then unchecked it again and the screen did not appear to dim before sleep anymore. However, since the last kernel panic on Monday, I have reenabled the option thinking it could possibly be this. It's kind of far fetched I know, but my system has been stable for past 2 days so perhaps this software flaw in the Energy Saver is the blame. Sort of makes sense since this timmer for dimming is activated before sleep of the display which might corrispond with some part of the sleep/wake system of the computer and/or Mac OS X. Later, I am going to try turning the dimmer off and cycling the computer from sleep to wake and see if I get a panic. I'll keep everyone posted as to my results.

  • Macbook Pro (2008) won't wake from sleep?

Two days ago, a day after replacing an old battery, my 2008 model Macbook Pro refused to wake from sleep. For the past 48 hours it has been doing one of two things.
              A) It will act normally, except that the screen is blank (make the start-up sound, and sound as though it's running when I try to wake it)
               or
              B) Act as if it's sleeping.
    I have tried:
    -Resetting the SMC
    -Resetting the PRAM
-Restarting the laptop from battery power
-Restarting with it plugged in a battery removed
Someone gave me the idea to hook up an external monitor, and see if it's my screen, but it's in the "Don't wake from sleep" stage at the moment. It's is out of warranty, so I want to see if anyone has any solutions or suggestions before I pay someone to take a look at it.
    Thanks!

I'm convinced the price of repairs is a ploy to drive up new sales figures! As are these convenient 'catastrophic' hardware issues! It's odd that every post asking about this fault crop up after 4 or 5 years of impeccable reliability, it's like they are self destruct to force you into the clutches of an overly friendly assistant who leaves you wanting to invite them round for Sunday dinner because your nan will adore them! Ahhh well shiny new apple things do fill the void in lives only satisfied by something over priced to stroke and adore!
