Mac cannot detect external hard disk

My mac is running oin OSX 10.8.5. It cannot detect a hard disk that was originally detected before. This happened after I took out the hard disk a previous I used it without ejecting it properly. thanks!

Have you tested that the MBP USB ports are working?
Have you tried different cables?
Does the HDD work on other macs.
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility?
Have you tried the bare HDD in another enclosure?
Ciao.

  • My iMac cannot detect the Hard Disk

    Hi, i've got a question...
Something is wrong with my new iMac. Somedays (only somedays) my iMac cannot detect the hard disk, so when I startup it stops on the initial screen (whit a gray "apple" and background). I tryed to startup it with OSX system discs but the installation app and disk utility don't detect any Hard Disk.
At an authorized store have said to me that can be a software problem...
Is that true? I thought that was a hardware problem.
    Thanx,

Given the young age of you machine I believe you should be taking Apple to task on this one. I'd advise you back-up your data to multiple locations before you go any further.

  • How to move all or partial data from Mac to an external hard disk?

    Hei,
I need to learn how to move the movies/projects/events from mac hard drive to another external hard drive.
So basically, I have always imported all events from my video camera (the original clips) to iMovie located in my MacBook Pro hard drive. But after videoing for one year, the hard disc is starting to get full, and I cannot continue using only the laptop's hard drive.
So I would like to move part OR all of my iMovie related stuff to another external disk drive (connected with USB wire). How do I do that? Is it possible to have some events located in Mac's own hard drive, and some clips/projects in the external hard disk? How to arrange all this?
I know that "projects" are linked to the original event clips, so if I would be able to export some part of my iMovie data to the external hard drive, I should export both, for example, everything from the same year (the events) which is linked to the projects that are using those data.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

ok First with IM9, you can easily move stuff around. Here are some lessons learned from my experience managing projects across 6 different drives.
    1. All Drives must be formatted macos extended journaled
    2. The large terabyte drives are great for long term storage of events
    3. When you are working on a project, if possible, try to move the clips the current clips you will need to your internal hard drive. This is only necessary if you care about any time machine back ups.
    4. I have also worked on project straight from the external drives. I also use portable drives such as WD passports. These are small 500 gig drives that can travel with you. I have three of those. LOVE THEM.
    5. One way to move projects and clips and keep things organized is to move the project using command drag. It will ask, do you want to move just the project or project and clips. Then voila all clips and project are then moved to that drive!
    6. REMEMBER...MOVE WITHIN IMOVIE using COMMAND Drag. NEVER EVER USE THE FINDER. This is for both projects and events. Using the Command Key will ensure the projects are moved and not just copied!
    7. Last but not least, if you have changed the dates of events using change date function in imovie....For some reason, there is a bug. It inconsistently will change the date. Don't know why and have reported the issue, but it is still not fixed!
But its still a great little app!

  • Cannot access external hard disk

I keep all my data in Segate external hard disk. Today I wanted to set up windows using Boot camp. The window installed but at the end it froze. By mistake I kept the External hard disk connected to my Macbook Pro. When I rebooted I cannot find the my external hard disk. I tried to access through Mac partiton but it displays waring.
Saying I need to Initialize the external hard disk. That mean I will end up with erased hard disk which is not i want. Is there any option. ?
It looks like Mac OS cant recognise the drive at all. When I open the Disk Uitiluty I can see the drive.
    Any ideas guys

Try opening Disk Utility and try repairing the disk. It might hopefully be able to repair it. Otherwise you're probably looking at needing a tool like DiskWarrior 4…

  • Cannot copy external hard disk as its asking for permissions

Not sure why my settings have changed, but now every time I copy data onto my external drive main directory it asks for my password. I checked and seems that my current user is read and write setting (prssing command i.) I also notice that on a few folders I can copy directly without the prompt.
How do I set it so that it no longer asks me this? I have automatic backup software which now doesn't work due to this issue.

    Hi JPOlas,
Do you attempt to backup SQL Server to a network shared folder?  If that is the case, please make sure that you have configured with the steps below before backup:
    • Create a network share from the remote server.
    • Provide Full privilege for the SQL Server account to read and write data to the share. For more information:
Configuring SQL Server service account security for network resources access.
In addition, please note that the time of SQL Server backup is directly proportional to network bandwidth. And the increased I/O activity has the potential for a negative impact on performance and your system availability.
There are other ways you can workaround this issue, please take a look at this article on

WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
It makes no difference at all.
How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

  • Have an external hard disk. cannot open on my mac

hi. i have an external hard disk that i used to use with my dell. now that i switched to mac, when i plug it i can see the info, but when i want to add or delete something from the external disk it says cannot be transformed any info, just for reading, so my question is how can disable that and be able to change the info in my external hard disk? thanx in advance for any information in this issue

The drive is obviously formatted as NTFS, which the Mac cannot write to. You'll need to reformat it using Disk Utility, which will erase the contents

  • External Hard disk cannot be detected by my MacBook Pro USB's

    Hi
I have bought an external hard disk 2.5" and even though I have formatted it as FAT 32 still none of my 2 USB ports detect it. It is a hitachi drive 160 GB eSATA. I haven't use power with my external drive.
I ended up sharing it through a toshiba notebook I have for the kids running Windows XP and I transfer files though the Toshiba to the external drive. It's outrageous!!!
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Andreas

    Hi Andreas,
OSX can recognize and use FAT32 partitions without additional help !
Your problem sounds to me as a power consumption problem of the external HD, meaning that the HD does need more power from the USB port than the MacBook Pro can deliver.
Best solution might indeed be to get the external HD on its own power supply.

  • I currently have a MAC Mini, which has 1 Firewire 800 port.  I have a 1TB external hard disk that runs at Firewire 400.  Can I insert another external hard drive that runs at Firewire 800?

Here's the deal.  Currently running SL 10.6.8 on a MAC Mini.  Planning for eventual upgrade to ML.  Have a 1TB external hard drive partitioned into two volumes, one volume for Time Machine and one volume for SL which I periodically update using Superduper.  Thus I always have a point-in-time bootable backup on the external hard drive.
The MAC Mini supports Firewire 800.  However, booting from my current external hard disk is pretty slow, since it only supports Firewire 400.  I am considering buying an Iomega MiniMax which supports Firewire 800.  Then, I would use the MiniMax as my bootable backup volume, and relegate the older hard drive to Time Machine.
So, question #1 is, can I daisychain the new MiniMax between the MAC Mini and my existing external hard drive?  My expectation is that the new Mini Max would run using Firewire 800 and that the existing hard drive would run at Firewire 400 speed as it does today.  If it doesn't (e.g., daisychaining in the Firewire 400 external disk with the MiniMax Firewire 800 external disk ends up running the whole leg at 400), my resolution will be to run the existing hard disk off an available USB port and have just the MiniMax running at Firewire 800.
Why am I going to all this trouble?  That's question #2.  I don't trust upgrades; they always break something.  When I upgraded from 10.5.x to 10.6.x, the web directories got renamed, and all of my web apps 403'd until I figured out what happened.  Plus, I have accounts for other family members, and in order to ensure their ability to use the computer during my upgrade process, I need to have the ability to fall-back quickly to a known-stable version of OSX.  So what I'm trying to do is insulate myself from problems by partitioning the MiniMax into two volumes, taking a Superduper image of my current installation on the Mac Mini to MiniMax external drive volume 1, then upgrading to ML on the MAC Mini, and take a SuperDuper image of that to MiniMax external drive volume 2.  Then, if the upgrade results in problems I can't resolve immediately, I can simply reimage the MAC Mini from MiniMax volume 1.  BUT ...
... I've read that the ML installation creates a "service and support" partition that is different than the startup disk.  I'm concerned that I won't be able to reimage the hard disk in the MAC Mini once I upgrade it to ML because of the partitioning changes it introduces on the startup disk.  Theoretically, I +should+ be able to use the disk utility on my SL system to repartition the disk in the MAC Mini prior to reimaging it from my backup, but I'm considering the possibility that the new partition may be of a type that the SL disk utility cannot identify, and might therefore be unable to delete or even detect.  So I'm hoping someone else has been down this road and can advise me.  Even at Firewire 800 speeds, booting from an external disk is still going to be slow, so I want to be able to restore my SL image to the MAC Mini hard disk.
A little background on me.  I work for a major disaster recovery provider.  I used to have a Mac PRO G5, which I got used, and the first thing I did with it was install a second hard disk, SuperDupe an image from the first disk to the second, and made sure I could boot from the second.  THEN I started using and customizing the MAC.  I really feel vulnerable with the MAC Mini, since it only has the single internal hard drive - sort of like going out in public dressed only in a long T-shirt.  So my whole thing is, I ABSOLUTELY MUST BE ABLE TO PUT THINGS BACK THE WAY THEY WERE before I do the migration to ML.
Obsessive-cumpulsive?  Yep.  Anal?  You got it.  That's why I'm in the DR business.

You may have overloaded the port, following the instructions below it should reset:
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).+
+3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.+
+4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.+
+5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.+

  • External hard disk not detecting

Hi, I am using WD 1 TB external hard disk and it was going all good till now one day my friend asked for my hard disk as he need to back up some data and connected it to PC. Now I am trying to connect it to mac but mac is not detecting.
My hard disk has all my softwares and other important data.
    Need help ASAP

repair disk just checks for errors
likely its a PC formatted HD, thats why you cant read it
Formatting ERASES a HD, so dont do that to the other persons HD.
check what the format of it is.  If its NTFS youd need an APP like Paragon to read / write to it.

  • How to format an external hard disk Mac Os Extended (Journaled)?

    hello
I connect an external hard disk (2.5' IDE Western Digital Scorpio Blue, WD2500BEVE) via USB or FireWire to my Mac mini. The Disk Utility tool shows an external disk drive of 128 GB - but the disk has 250 GB. How can I format the external USB/Firewire-harddisk 250 GB "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"?
I tried also to format the disk on a Windows PC (Windows XP). But I could not find a software to format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Any hints on this? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

    andreasmarx wrote:
As I use theses hard disks in a external hard disk case, I'm asking me whether my hard disk cases do not support more that 128 GB disk capacity. Is that realistic?
It is not only realistic but probably the reason your Mac cannot see more than 128 GB of the capacity of the drives mounted in them. It has nothing to do with the interface between the Mac & case (like Firewire) but instead with the controller in the case that connects the raw ATA drive to that interface. Older ATA standards used a 28 bit LBA (logical block address) scheme to access the disk. For 512 bytes per sector this works out to a maximum of 128 GB of addressable disk capacity. The ATA-6 standard, also called Ultra-ATA/100 or just ATA-100, increased the bits in the address space from 28 to 48, with a disk capacity limit of 2 petabytes.
ATA-6 was introduced in 2001, so any external drive case made before then for ATA drives will be forever limited to 128 G. Even now, some come with a controller that does not support the ATA-6 standard, & essentially none have all the hardware to support its full 48 bits of address capacity. However, since 2 PB (2000 terabyte) drives won't be available anytime soon, all you really need is a case that is ATA-6 or better compliant & supports enough address bits for the largest drive you intend ever to put in it.
Case makers don't usually make this information easily available but many now include a "bullet" spec about the maximum capacity their case supports, typically rounded off to simple numbers like 320 GB, 500 GB, or whatever. If you can't find this info, you can assume that the newer the case the more likely it is to support larger capacity drives, or just buy one with a good return policy & test it yourself with the largest raw drive you own.
