Mac Doesn't See External Drives on WinPC, PC Doesn't See Mac

I'm trying to transfer some files that are on an external drive connected to a Windows PC to my new Mac Pro.
On the Mac, in Finder, I can see the PC, but I can only see it's internal Hard Drive; the external drive don't show up in Finder.
On the PC, I'm not seeing the Mac Pro at all. In Tiger, it seems to me, there was check box under the "sharing" preferences for "Windows sharing," but I can't find that in Leopard. So, the PC doesn't see the Mac at all.
It does suddenly dawn on me that I could just detach the external drive that I'm trying to copy from the PC and plug it into the Mac, but... that would be too easy. I would still like, at least, to be able to see the Mac from the PC.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

My recommendation is to format the drive as FAT32 via OSX's Disk Utility, this will allow you to read/write from both the Mac and PC environment.
Like I said, I don't think that's the issue, because my MacBook shares everything with the PC just fine (except the externals on the PC). And of course, I don't want to reformat the external drives until I've got the data off of them.
I just checked, and Tiger has a "Windows sharing" checkbox under the "Sharing Preferences" that allows the MacBook to show up in "My Network Places" on the PC. The problem I'm having is getting the MacPro to show up on the PC; the Pro has Leopard, and there's no "Windows Sharing" in Leopard that I can see.
Thanks again,

  • Suddenly Mac mini won't "see" external drives. Possible related to OS software update to 10.6.8?

Suddenly Mac mini won't "see" external drives, neither Firewire nor USB. Possible related to OS software update to 10.6.8? Worked fine under 10.6.4. Any advice? Thanks.

Turns out it was nothing to do with the OS update, it was just a loose cable plug connecting my FireWire/USB hub to the computer. But your tip is a good one -- I'd been wondering why the external drives (even when mounted properly) weren't showing up in the sidebar. Thanks!

If your computer doesn't have enough disk space, yes.
If your computer doesn't have enough RAM, not without installing more.

  • Why doesn't an external drive mount?

I am trying to do backup, and the external drive won't mount. I bought a SATA 250GB drive and attached it to the Powerbook using the USB port. The light shows up on the enclosure but there is no hard drive that appears on the desktop. Also it doesn't show up on Disk Utility.
Is it because this is the wrong sort of drive?
I connected the external drive to the MacBook Air to see if it would mount there and it doesn't show up there either on the desktop.

Is this a bus-powered USB drive? If so, it's demanding too much power, and the USB port can't meet the demand. You'll need to provide it with an AC power supply, if it can be so equipped, or plug it into an AC-powered USB hub instead of directly into the computer.

My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...
I have purchased a new mini mac and I want to leave the library where it is on the external drive but move to new mini mac and have it show as it did on the old mini mac..
what do i need to do ?
I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
    Thanks

I had already tried that one and got this...
below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?

  • Using Time Capsule to back up Mac Book Pro and external drive

we're changing our main computer in the house to our mac book pro, which is not currently backed up, so i'm thinking of buying a time capsule. our current main machine is an old pc with two external hard drives connected....one used as the main file storage location and the second as a back up location. the main large files on these drivers are photo's, videos and scanned documents. can i use the time capsule to back up the mac book with an external hard drive connected to it? i'm thinking of leaving all the photo's, videos, documents, etc. on the external harddrive but want to be able to back it up to the time capsule as well as backing up the mac book pro. can backing up the external hard drive be set up to activate automatically daily as I think the mac book can? thanks

This is not as simple as it could be..
Firstly the Mac can read the external drives via the PC if they are shared to the network.. it cannot read them directly plugged into the Mac or the TC.
Also the TC is not really designed to store files.. it is a location for backups by TM..
Read some of the stuff Pondini.. our local Time Machine expert.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Q3 here is relevant. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
The hard drives would have to be plugged directly into the Mac to be backed up and they would have to be reformatted to Mac format. So you would need to offload the files.. format and then load the files back.. no trivial task.

  • Leopard Issues When Installing, Doesn't recognize external drives

    Here we go again,
I have another user who upgrade to Leopard doing an Archive Clean Install probably with the external hard drives plugged into the Mac. Now his external drives aren't recognized at all. Does anyone know what is causing this issue and is there away to fix this problem without doing a complete archive reinstall all over again?

Is the partition scheme and format consistent with that machine and Leopard?
    Were the drives password protected?
Can you mount the drives using the terminal?
Do the drives show up on any another computer running Tiger? If they don't then going back to Tiger won't help.
There was a problem early on that it sometimes took a very long time (1/2 hour) for Leopard to recognize a drive because of Spotlight. How long did you wait for the drives to be recognized?

  • Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!

Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!
The WD My Passport, I purchased back in early December 2013 & I just used it the other day after I updated my Macbook... & of course it says in the online manual it works for Mac Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard but not this new Maverick update. Is there anything I can do?

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on some Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • I ereased my external drive now time machine doesn't back up. What should I do?

I ereased my external drive now time machine doesn't back up. What should I do?  the reason I ereased was because backups wouldn't finsh because of disk error. I did disk repair. Still wouldn't back up so ereased the back up drive. Now nothing appears on it. On the internal drive of my imac in Appllications Timemachine is still there. When I click on it it goes to a screen that looks like a night sky and nothing more happens. Do I need to download some software?

Time Machine doesn't work on 10.4.7.    It didn't become available until 10.5.   Use a different backup software if you are going to use 10.4.7*:

  • New hard drive, itunes library on an external drive... why doesn't it see it?

My internal hard drive died, has to reinstall snow leapard on my older macpro.  Even though I have pointed itunes to the library I want it to use in preferences, the library isn't seen by itunes.  If I click on a song from the external drive, itunes suddenly finds the song and it is sees it.  Is there any other way to do this?  I have way too much music and video files to click on each one...

Well, I can say that the question is partially solved.... while most of my music library popped up, much of it did not.  The only common denominator I can see is that the music I transferred off of disc may not have transferred over, only the itunes purchases?  I can't see for sure.  I am still trying to figure out how to get the new itunes app on my new hard drive to see everything without me having to click on every file thats missing.  Let this be a lesson to all to back everything up on time machine.  I thought that having my data on a seperate hard drive would be ok.  Seriously wish I had used time machine.

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    15 August 2011

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

  • Clone a Mac Partition to an External Drive from within Windows 7 Bootcamp?

Anyone know if it is possible to clone the mac os x partition to an external drive from within Windows 7 bootcamp? I (like a few others) had a problem with the latest 10.6.3 update and I cannot boot into the mac partition but I can access it via bootcamp so I was thinking about trying to clone it to an external drive and then boot from the new clone and see if that works.
    Appreciate your comments.

setup a 30GB partition on an external drive, along with a partition of 150% the size of your Mac OS X volume -- or larger.
    Install OS X to 30GB.
While booted from DVD, before you install, you'll need to go to Utility Menu => Disk Utility to do the partitoning. While there, in DU see if you can repair your system.
And where is your TimeMachine or clone backup? The "Step #1: Backup before beginning your Boot Camp project."?
No way to backup or clone from within Windows, though you may be able to write to NTFS backup volume, UNLESS you bought MacDrive8 which allows read AND write to HFS+ from within Windows.

  • Mac and windows sharing external drive on mac.

I am trying to access my external drive on my mac from my pc. Sharing is enabled but the drive doesn't show up. what are the options to do this? I have tried to find it by name command line in windows but no go. I also tried to mount it to the pc but no good the drive mounts but will not asign a drive letter and is not a readable format for XPpro.... Doh!
    Thanks
    Mark

If you want the drive to be readable on both peecee and Mac, the drive should be formatted as a FAT32 volume which OSX can read and write to or as a NTFS volume which the Mac can read but not write to.
    That is not correct.
Windoze does not recognize any Mac formats.
That's true, but Windows doesn't need to read Mac formats to access a network disk. The disk formatting is handled by the computer directly connected to the disk (which is the Mac). The network file access does not contain any disk formatting information and therefore it doesn't matter what format is used on the disk.
You can use SharePoints to make that drive visible to non-Admin users.
