Mac fils to Samsung TV

Have just purchased a Samsung 40" LCD TV and want to view films stored on Mac in Itunes (also would like to play music and see photos).
Ideally want the connections to be wireless.
What is the best option please.

An AppleTV (which is wireless n or ethernet) will allow you to stream music and compatible video (iTunes Store purchases or home made), as well as view some photos, from teh MAc to AppleTv connected to the TV via HDMI or component.
It won't play anuthing in iTunes as some files require conversion first.
Music not generally an issue except for various enthusiast formats like ogg, FLAC etc
Video is more prescriptive, in essence files needing to be h264 <5Mbps for aything above standard definition quality.

Backup with cloning software your HD to have an exact copy of it as it is.
Use this methodology to recover your partition.

  • Best setup for a non-Mac file server?

I have a dual xeon server, with a SATA RAID5 I want to use as a file server in a cross-platform environment.
*What I've tried and the issues...*
At first I considered using Windows 2003 (Win2k3) but Services for Macintosh (SFM) is an older version of AFP and thus only supports 31 character filenames. With all our Macs supporting SMB/Samba/CIFS and Apple touting that "Macs and PCs can co-exist harmoniously on the same network" I figured I would give that a try.
    SMB doesn't work.
Sure I can create a connection, but transferring files is a completely different story. I'm trying to backup application and system data, but companies such as Adobe and Apple have named some of their files with special characters that can't be transferred over SMB. I know NTFS doesn't support these characters, but I though a Linux box using SMB would work fine. It doesn't. It's the protocol which keeps me from transferring the data. I end up with the lovely error message of "You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination..." (what's sad is, if you google for " because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination" you only get 6 results.)
So I thought I would give NFS a try. Apple says "Viewed from Mac OS X, [connecting via NFS] is just like connecting to an Apple or Windows server." No. It's not. NFS shares don't even show up in the Finder's Network listing. There are also a pile of other hurdles which are only tackled by savvy, command-line using users.
So that leaves me with AFP. Win2k3 doesn't support filenames longer than 31 characters, and Win2k8 is dropping SFM altogether. Off to choose a *nix flavor, but that requires Netatalk. It hasn't been updated in years, it has many bad performance reviews... and most distros have removed it. I can download and install it. Oh, but that requires I get the kernel source files. Then I have to create an RPM an that's not working... now I'm several levels deep in trying to figure out how to get Netatalk working and I'm not even sure it will work.
*What's the best setup for a non-Mac file server?*
FreeNAS seems promising, but it's in alpha/beta and they have all sorts of warnings regarding potential data loss. Sure there's ExtremeZ-IP, but I really don't want to spend $675 do something Apple claims OS X can already do. I can put just about any non-Mac OS on this thing... what's the best way to set it up so it works?
    Thanks much.

Rick may be right because although i didnt think of it before i tend to have notoriuosly long classnames for my php classes and i have used samba on occasion (when rsync is out of the question for one reason or another) and never had a problem. I use kubuntu (feisty at the moment )with an ext3 filesystem. if i have a chance this evening ill give it a try and see what happens.
You could also possibly use FUSE to use an ssh filesystem for the shares... i don tknow how that would figure in your back up though.
Also if worse comes to worse you could tar or dmg the the necessary files... just some thoughts.
Ill be interested to know what you end up implementing....
OH one last thought... Compile Darwin from source and use that as your server

  • TS2570 Boot or Restore, can't see my Mac partition but can see my Windows7 partition. From Windows I can access my Mac files which I've backed up on a NTFS drive. I most probably will need to erase the Mac partition & make a new one, what happens to Boot

    Hi,
When I boot my 2010 MacBook Pro I get a gray screen, when I try to do a Restore, the Mac partition is nowhere in sight, it sees my Windows Partition.
When I in Windows I can see all the files in the Mac Partition and I've backed up my Mac files on a NTFS external drive. My Windows partition has been working fine, I've installed it 2 years ago and have been receiving regular updates. Only problem is my display driver crashes occasionally.
I most probably will have to recreate the Mac partition and re-install Mountain Lion from the Mac servers. BUT, what happens to Boot Camp and my Windows 7 partition?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no way to expand the partition upwards. As you noted, you would need to either start afresh, or simply find a good use for the first partition.

  • Problem when saving a PowerPoint 2008 for Mac file to PDF.

When I save my PowerPoint 2008 for Mac file as a PDF, the text/font comes out wrong in the PDF -- kind of looks degraded (thinner, darker, more pixilated). I've tried changing the font in the PowerPoint file many times and tried saving it as a PDF both directly and through print -- but each time the text/font doesn't come through correctly in the PDF.  The images/photos in the PowerPoint file all convert to the PDF just fine.  Can anyone help?

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Pixels put in Mac file icon have not been converted to the profile of the icon

Pixels put in a Mac file icon image have not been converted to the colour profile of the icon image.
For example, when ProPhoto or Adobe RGB pixels are put in an icon image with no profile or "Generic RGB" profile, the result is a washed-out appearance to the icon.
Apple recommends sRGB (PNG) images in icons. Adobe, please comply with that.
Edit: I realise that CS5.1 did the same as CS6.

Makes you wonder whether the person who programmed the icon generating code...  Nah, I won't say it.    Down boy.

  • Mac File Migration Between Windows File Servers (NAS to SAN)

My company has upgraded our Windows based file server from a NAS to a SAN, and I need to know the best method to migrate our Mac files from the old Windows Server to the new Windows Server; do we have to use a Mac to preserve resource fork data?
The last time our IT provider attempted to initiate a Windows file transfer of our Mac files, all resource fork data was lost, zeroing out all fonts associated with job files (very bad).

Resource forks appear as normal files and directories to Windows systems. If you copy all your directories and files with complete content directly from the old server to the new server (which is much faster than copying them from one server to the other using a client machine), you also copy the resource forks.
I suggest copying (not moving) all data directly from server to server and check after that if the resource forks are still in good state. If not, you still have the (working) data on the old server and can try out other methods.

  • QuickTime Player vs Mac File Share

I used FCP to capture some mov files under Mac, and used Mac File Share option (SMB) to share the folder, then I tried to open the mov file from QT by used the Windows XP system; However, I got this error message
"Error -2000: a necessary data reference could not be resolved"
The UNC pathe for the mov file is: \\Mac0016cba81596\fcp data\Capture Scratch\Untitled Project 1\Untitled
If I copy the mov file from UNC location to local system, then I am able to open the file by use QT in XP system.
any idea why the QT can NOT open file from UNC path under Windows?

    hmmmmm.....
I just made a post in the 10.5.3 forums about this or something very much like it...
Basically, before 10.5.2, I could happily view .movs on my PC when they were served from my Mac via SMB.
With 10.5.2 and 10.5.3, I get the error message that the OP gave. If I copy the file to the PC, they can be opened just fine. These are full files, not reference files.
Any input? I hadn't complained about this in 10.5.2 because I thought it would be fixed pretty quickly and also because there were a ton of really good file sharing improvements, so overall 10.5.2 was a net positive. If Apple has decided to store these files differently, that's not a good thing for interoperability.
There are no issues viewing the files over AFP Mac to Mac.

  • Can a .rar file be used to zip a Mac file?

I've got a bunch of .rar files that are supposed to make up one big Mac file, but I've never heard of that being possible..always thought that's only a PC zip format....anyone know otherwise? If so, how do you unzip 'em? thanks

There is one caveat: certain types of ‘legacy’ files, from Mac OS 9 and earlier—those with resource forks—can’t be safely stored in non-Mac-aware archives. Font suitcases, for example, are completely lost (become empty files); 68k-compatible applications are ruined; non-native image formats lose their previews. The only exception of which I am aware is a Zip archive created by OS X’s tool and equivalents, which use a special workaround to save resources and Finder Info in such a way that they can reconstitute the original file structure on extraction. Windows users +et al.+ just see an extra directory in these archives. AFAIK this isn’t available for rar, tar, gzip and other such compression formats—and if implemented by a particular Mac-aware utility, would require that a similar program be used for unpacking the archives.

  • Help converting old pagemaker mac files

Have a set of old pagemaker for mac files for a publication (text book - total of 34 chapters, roughly 1,000 pages).  Do not know which version of pagemaker was used.  Original publisher has gone out of business, but do have original source files.  Would like to convert the set of files to a format for use in newer adobe tools - framemaker or indesign so we can do updates and publish again.  Looking for someone to do this conversion, please.

If I were you, I would start by downloading the trial version of PageMaker 7 and see if I can open the files with that. If they open, the rest should be easy and you could complete your conversion to version 7 in the 30 days trial period, saving yourself time and money. The new files could be afterwards opened with InDesign, probably not completely faultlessly, but...

  • How to transfer pc file to Samsung using the adobe reader app?

how to transfer pc file to Samsung using the adobe reader app?

I solved the problem.  I manually created my own Adobe PDF folder by connecting the phone via usb to my PC, Windows Autoplay gave me the option to 'Open device to view files'. Explorer then displayed all the folders on the phone.  I created an Adobe PDF folder manually and copied the PDFs I wanted to view into that folder.  Adobe Reader then found the files without a problem.  I clearly was missing something quite simple but something I'm sure a lot of people would miss.  Perhaps if the next version of Adobe Reader for Android created this folder automatically, like Kindle and Kobo and other readers do, it might save a lot of people a bit of a headache.

You can in fact buy what you want, no need to go with Apple TV

  • Backup of JUST Windows partition (without shared Mac files) on a Mac

I have an iMac running OSX 10.4.10, using VMWare Fusion to run a small (10%) partition with some old but necessary Windows XP 5.1 applications. I want to use a 160 GB external hard drive (Fire Wire and USB both) with a small (10GB) partition to backup just the windows partition (FAT32 formatted) and the remainder (lions...tiger's share) for OSX backup.
I have finally gotten to the point that I can backup each operating system's files on their respective partitions on the same external drive, BUT the windows backup always EXCEEDS the 4GB max file size for the WIndows backup file in FAT32 format, BECAUSE Windows somehow backs up the OSX files ALSO (as "shared files").
Since I already backup the OSX files through OSX, I don't need windows to backup the Mac files. If it only backed up its OWN Windows partition, it would not exceed the FAT32 4GB limit.
I know I can hand-select files for Windows backup to get around this, but I am likely not backing up software and settings.
**What I am looking for is a simple, turn-key way to get a FULL backup of JUST the Windows partition. Can anyone help?

Take a look at the Mac freeware utility WinClone - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
