Mac froze during a reboot?

Hi, earlier today, I was using my macbook pro (2009), and then, I went to reboot it. when I came back from taking a shower, I noticed that the computer had not gone to sleep (i rebooted it with the computer closed as i normally do). when I went to see what had happened to it, I noticed that it was abnormally hot, and when I checked what was on screen, I saw that my mac had never finished restarting. all I got was the apple logo and the boot up gear below it was stopped. naturally, I held down the power button to force it to turn off, but, when I went to turn it back on, it required me to hold down the power button for 5 seconds, then it went back to normal. when I came back from the store an hour later, the computer was fine. why would this have happened to my computer? its the first time this happened, and I would like to prevent this from happening ever again. I was thinking of taking it into an apple store to a genius bar session about it (since my MacBook Pro Restore DVDs are at home, and I'm at college for the summer.) Would they be able to help me solve the problem, or is it something I can fix without having any other boot disks? thanks for the help!

Indeed!!! You are not biased but I too feel that way. It's so amazing to know there's so much of knowledge on BB that anyone can just come in here to know more about BB. There is so much to know!! It's amazing!! From now I too would like to spend more time here. Thanks and Cheer!!

  • My mac froze after connecting it to AirPlay and now I can't get it to reboot. Help!

I was hooking my MacBook Pro up to my dad's Apple TV receiver via AirPlay. The Mac display began changing like it would be mirrored, but it never started to mirror, and my mac froze. 10 min later still froze I shut it down via the power button. When I turned it back on, I couldn't get it to boot up all the way. It goes to the point where their is a cursor on the screen, and that's it. I then tried booting up in safe mode, but it took 25 min to boot. I have an early 2011 model and I just installed Yosemite on it a few weeks ago. My AppleCare 3 year warranty ran out back in September, so any help in troubleshooting this is appreciated.

    Try a force-restore:
    1. Launch iTunes but do not connect the iPad.
    2. Hold down the iPad's Home and Sleep buttons at the same time. This will force the screen to fade and the Apple Logo to reappear. KEEP holding the two buttons down until the screen goes black.
    3. Once the screen is black, release the Sleep button but keep holding down the Home button while you plug the cable into the iPad.  Contunue holding the Home button until the you see the iTunes logo and the picture of the cable on the screen. This may take up to 30 seconds.
    4. iTunes should now detect the iPad and you can perform a Restore.

  • MacBook Pro Froze During Windows Installation

I am running Mavericks lastest update on mid-2012 MacBook Pro.  I was installing Windows and following the directions provided in the Apple Support Communities.........the MacBook froze during the installation of Windows after I answered the prompt about the size of the partition........800 GhB for Mac and 200GhB for Windows 7.  I now have a blank grey screen on the MacBook.  I get the Apple boot-up when I press the Power up button but nothing happens.
How can I reboot and start the installation over?
    Thanks very much.

Correction:  I get the Apple boot-up sound when I press the Power button but nothing then happens other than the same grey screen.

  • HT201250 my mac froze on a grey screen after i tried to login so i tried a safe boot, but now  i am stuck in the startup utilities program and i cant get out of it

My mac froze and wouldnt startup because it was forced to sleep while a complex program was running, and simply ended up on a blank grey screen, and this happened upon every startup. so then i tried to use a safe boot but this ended me up on the startup utilities thing. i have realised that none of the options: restore from time machine backup, reinstall osx mountain lion, and repair disk are available to help me startup, and i cant select a startup disk either as it says none are available. so i am stuck on this program and it reapears every time i restart or shutdown and reboot, so i cant do anything. Please is there any way i could either quit startup utilities or get back to my computer desktop as i have lots of non-backed up image and video files that i cant afford to lose. please help!

    Maybe this will help.

  • My iphone is froze during a reset at the itunes symbol and usb plug

my iphone froze during a reset at the itunes symbol and usb plug with the arrow pointing at symbol.  how do i get past this point as my itunes account is not even recognizing my phone now?

Turn it off by holding home+ power button untill the screen goes black ( as soon as it goes black, release the buttons).. This might take some practice , so dont worry if on the first try your phone reboots and goes to itunes screen again.
Now, with your phone powered off, enter DFU mode:
    Method 1)
Attach the phone to the pc
    Turn the phone off
Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
Whilist in dfu mode, itunes will recognize the device and it will ask you if you wish to restore it. Simply click restore, and the restoring proces will begin.
This will hopefully fix your iphone.
    Cheers

My computer froze during match initial formatting.  Now some songs are uploaded others are "greyed out."  If I go song by song, I can update match.  How can I do this all at once and also update album art?

    Hi gdogk,
If there was an interruption during the initial iTunes Match process and you are now having issues with playback and album art, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful. In particular, you may want to turning iTunes Match off, then back on again, as noted here:
If iTunes Match is already enabled on your computer or device, try turning iTunes Match off and then on again.
Mac: While holding down the option key, choose Store > Turn Off iTunes Match.
Turn iTunes Match on by selecting Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
Windows: While holding down the shift key, choose Store > Turn Off iTunes Match.
Turn iTunes Match on by selecting Store > Turn On iTunes Match.

Holding the power key on your computer should allow you to restart your computer. You can also try to force quit the installer.

  • MacBook Pro froze during software update, now it's stuck at gray screen

My MacBook Pro was running a little slow today so I did a Disk Utility repair and that went fine then I did a software update (OS X, Java and remote desktop) but it froze during the last ten percent of the update install and now when I boot up it won't get past the gray apple screen. I tried to restore Lion but since I bought this used my Apple ID wasn't used to purchase Lion so I can't do a restore.
I've tried to safe boot and boot from a CD but no go.
I also tried the short and long Apple hardware tests and those found no problems

In case anyone else needs an answer to this, I called in to Apple. Tech support said to power it off and let it reboot itself. I had to go back into updates and tell it to finish the install (restart computer, was the only step remaining) and it worked fine. It took longer because it had gotten hung up during the previous restart. ( Just to clarify, I was stuck on the grey screen after the restart step of the install.)

  • Mac Pro will not reboot after Bootcamp attempted installation

I have an older quad-core 2009 Mac Pro. I tried to install Bootcamp before realizing that it's not supported. Now the Mac Pro will not reboot.
It starts up fine. It shuts down fine. But it just will not reboot. When I try to reboot, it just clicks like it's trying to boot to a DVD or a drive that's not there (I have since formatted the drive I was using for Bootcamp and use it for Time Machine now).
This is what I have tried:
    - PRAM reset
    - SMC reset
What could be keeping my Mac Pro from rebooting properly?? Please help. Thank you!!

So you tried with Mac and Windows on same drive?
    And you have Recovery partition.
You made a clone with CCC as well and cloned the Recovery
Paragon makes a couple programs to make life easier.
And, Well, Boot Camp works. There are unwritten rules. There is a forum devoted to it.
2009 is not old. Old is pre-2008 due to UEFI / EFI64 and how Windows 64-bit now looks during install.
It did install but the drivers and updates and such might be an issue.
Apple does not support HFS arrays, not just that Windows won't install but to mount, their Apple HFS driver.
You left out so much and maybe your IT didn't include Windows on Mac.
    www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
In general pull all your drives during install except that one Windows will be installed on.
Do get video driver from ATI etc yourself
Tell us what version, I assume Windows 8 which works fine other than a few issues - more with MacBook series and iMac or Mac Mini lines.

  • Ports not working--mac freezes during hardware test

My immediate problem is my mac freezing during the hardware test. I know it can take some time for the test to be completed, but it was over an hour and it was frozen at "2 min 16 seconds," and the mouse and keyboard aren't recognized. Even during the short test.
I held the power button down and turned it off.
The bigger problem is non-functioning ports. First it was the firewire ports to my maxtor hard drive and then my lacie superdrive. And it's not the cord or the units. They work other places. That was approx. a month ago. I didn't worry too much and went back to the internal drive.
Then today my internet stopped working. The modem is not reading the computer and the computer is not reading the modem. The modem works fine with my laptop thank goodness (although it's a PC we bought for the kids to play computer games on and it's driving me crazy!). So the modem and cord are fine.
Then a couple of my USB ports were not happy today. One wouldn't read my daughter's ipod touch, but then later did (?).
And to go back to the very beginning, sometimes when I put the computer to sleep, it freezes on a black screen with a working mouse pointer, but nothing else and I have to force quit. If it goes to sleep on its own, it's fine.
Here's what I have done today: done the PRAM boot, some other command-option-O-F boot, tried the hardware test twice--it froze twice. Repaired all the permissions, reset the thing. All this I found out on the discussion groups.
I have read a lot of posts of similar problems and tried what was said there.
Am I heading for a crash? I cant back up my new stuff because the firewires are non-functional. I can't burn bunch of stuff to discs because the superdrive is going bad and won't burn properly (which is why I bought the LaCie which my computer now won't recognize.
I can't get anything off my computer except in bits and pieces with 2GB usb drive.
I know I'm rambling, but I've just spent 5 hours trying to fix this thing. Any suggestions? I'm going to take it in to the apple store to get it repaired tomorrow, but I'm worried I will lose all my data. Also I am scared of what it will cost. Is there anything else I could do tonight?
I'd love to have something else to try. Many thanks,
    Barbara

    HI Barbara,
It sounds like the hard drive is failing or has failed. Boot from your Mac install disc and if you can run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairs.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode

  • HT1600 Froze during update what do you do

My Apple TV froze during update, I can't turn off. What do I do?

Thanks for the reply. I have always enjoyed your posts.
I figured that I would be looking at a restore event for my ATV3 when the update appeared to have frozen.
So since I had nothing to lose I did a hard reboot on the ATV3. (off and on again)
The device restarted and as expected, the update had not been applied.
Did the update again. ( I was surprised at how long the update process took after the download.)
After the update seemed to have completed, The lone white apple icon blinked off the black screen, the TV/Flat screen via HDMI stayed black/blank. After turning the TV off and on and replugging the HDMI cables and still having a blank screen.  I had no choice.
I did another hard reboot on the ATV3.
System started up with no problems and the update took hold.
