Mac Mail incoming messages stuck in endless loop

My Mac Mail (Version 7.3) suddenly went crazy on me this morning - when you check for incoming messages, it will show under mail activity that it is checking but the progress bar will fill 80% of the way then stop, with no messages downloaded. And if you go to check for incoming messages again, the total number of messages will double. On and on like that in an endless loop toward infinity. I was able to see that I do not, in fact, have thousands of e-mails waiting for me by clicking account info -> messages on server. Like a dummy I deleted my account (without backing up my sent and drafts, much to my combined shame and dismay) but that didn't fix the problem. I only have one account, a POP3, in my Mac Mail. OSX version is 10.9.4

First thing to do is never post your actual email address in the forums; you don't want to get lots of spam as a result of spambots harvesting that address.
Next, login to the web interface of your .mac account and verify how many messages are actually there, both new Unread messages, and already Read messages. Write those numbers down and then logout.
Quit Mail and go to Home/Library/Mail and remove the mailbox for your IMAP (.mac) account. Then delete any files that start with Envelope Index.
Restart Mail and wait for it to download your .mac email again and rebuild your Mail index; then check to see if the problem continues.

  • Mac Mail "Incoming Messages" seems to be in and endless loop.

When I open Mac Mail it automatically stars downloading new incoming mail messages. The indicator bar in the bottom left of the mail window indicates incoming messages 1 of 20. It seems to go for ten minutes or so, then increases to 4 of 58, then increases to 10 of 112, then increases to 14 of 197... This continues endlessly until I eventually have to force quit the application. Seems like something is corrupted in one or several of my many mailboxes I monitor with Mac Mail. What can I do to fix this?

  • Mac mail incoming messages

Occasionally when I click get mail, the incoming messages at bottom left say I'm receiving more than actually show up as new messages. I've already contacted my internet provider and they say I don't have any problems with my mail program. The guy at Apple store couldn't figure it out either. This is a random occurrence so it's difficult to demonstrate at the store. Has anyone experienced this problem?

yeah, mail sometimes seems to do that, but doesn't really matter I guess

  • Mac Mail - Saved Messages Recovery

In my Mac Mail Saved Messages, their were two folders labeled Saved Messages, with different content in each. I deleted one of them and both disappeared. How do I recover them? And then, how do I delete one of them?

Thanks for a very quick reply - and this is how this mailbox is set up.
I have also had a bit of help and advice from a knowlegable friend and he thinks the source of the deletions may be that the account is an IMAP account on the new machine and my iphone but a POP3 accont on my old machine. I have turned off the old machine to see if this changes the behaviours on the other machines.
This is a very good start.

  • Stuck in endless loop checking for IMAP mail

My ISP that I have my domain name on for some reason is having real problems with Mac OS X 10.8.0 that weren't there before:
Dovecot Exim version 4.80 is my server.
My Drafts, Drafts Cache, and a subfolder of Drafts all are checking messages through IMAP with no end in sight after 10 minutes on the Activity dialog. Safari, Chrome, and Mail are all that are open.  They claim the server load is all of 5% load.  Would upgrading to 10.8.1, 10.8.2, or 10.8.3 help (after of course backing up)?

Sure, just as soon as you come round to my house and do the laundry for me ;)
Alternatively, you could put a bit of effort in and fix the basic errors. You say that you are stuck in an endless loop. That is not possible from the code that you have supplied, there are therefore two possibilities.
    1. You lied i.e. you are actually trying to run the above code, it errors and you want someone to fix it, but thou8ght that somehow implying a different error in the code would get someone to do your work for you.
    2. You Poste d code different to that which you are actuially running and your code does indeed have an infinite loop. In which case, post the code that actually runs but drops into an endless loop.

  • Erasing Mac Mail Sent messages

As a customer of Earthlink, I use Mac Mail for e-mail. I have over 300 messages in my Sent box and would like to get rid of most of them, but that action seems to be blocked by one large file I sent recently that does not allow me to trash it and keeps all messages sent before it from being trashed. Earthlink tells me this is an Apple issue. Can anyone suggest what to do?

You might be better off re-posting this in the Mail for Panther forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=740
I remember threads from some years ago about big messages stuck in mailboxes and trashing something or other to fix it, but none of the details.

  • Mac Mail downloading emails in an infinite loop.

    I can't sort this out:
When I opened my brand new MacBookPro today OS X 10.6.7 was frozen and I had to force a shut down.
Once the computer was back on I tried to open Mail but I had a message that said that the index was corrupted and I had to create a new one.
Once a new index was created, Mac Mail has started downloading the last 480 emails I received in an infinite loop. It has already downloaded over 10K times the same emails!!
I have tried to rebuild the mailbox and I have deleted the index file a few times but the problem persist.
Please help!! I got a lot of work right now, I need my Mac Mail.

Well I'm having the same problem after also trying to send an email with photos as attachments.
The email keeps getting put into my draft mailbox "On My Mac". I've tried removing the attachments and then deleting the email,I've tried deleting the mailbox, I've been to the server and deleting the email I found there, but as you say, everytime, it comes back from the dead. I've gone to my mail preferences and changed the port and nothing seems to work. What is strange, is that everytime I click on the OK button on the error message, it starts again and puts another copy of the message into the draft mailbox, so I end up with multiple copies of the same email, complete with attachments.
I've tried turning airport off while I do this, and then turning it back on after deleting, but it hasn't helped.
I'm baffled as to what to try next.

  • Apple Mail--incoming messages

Hi...  I am setting up a new MacBook Pro and I use Apple Mail just as I did on my old computer...  I've imported the mail and tried to set the new one up like it is/was on the old.
But something is different because every five minutes (or at least it seems like every five minutes) when I have Mail setup to check for new mail, I see things like
    8 incoming messages
followed a only seconds later by say,
    15 incoming messages
But there are no mail messages actually coming in and nor should there be???
Once that message or two gets done, I look around for any new mail and there is none..  I can also immediately click the "check mail" button manually and, as expected, it will get the NO NEW MAIL sound...  But then five minues later when it's again time to check mail automatically, more often than not, here comes another barrage of
    12 incoming messages
or something silly like that...  I thought it might be RSS feed stuff but I can't find any of that set up or running...
It's clearly not real messages coming in, at least nothing I can find...  And my old setup on my old computer (also Apple Mail and both old and new are running on 10.8.3, Mail version 6.3) certainly does nothing like that...
So what is it???  What are these phantom incoming messages??
    thanks...  bob..

Why not just turn off the Gmail "Important" and "All Mail" labels for IMAP access? You can do this in Gmail's Webmail interface (gmail.com), under Settings (the gear icon), in the "Labels" tab. Turn off "Show in IMAP" for those two labels.

  • Why have my mac mail sent messages disappeared on one computer but not the other?

My mac mail account on my Air is not showing my sent messages other than the one I just sent.  To find the variables, I checked my mac mail on my iMac and my sent messages are there.
Not sure what the problem is but I look forward to some help.
    Thanks.

I note that I just found all previous sent messages in the separate sent messages folder on my sidebar (minus the message that appears in my regular Sent Mailbox).  I just moved these to the Sent mailbox and will wait to see if they appear there (in the sent mailbox) once it has processed this action.

  • In Mac Mail sent messages show as 'from'

I am using Mac Mail for my Macbook Air and iPhone. When I go to the sent folder on either device my name is displayed as 'from'. I know it's from me, da! And can't get it to change to the 'to' display. I have changed the view > message attributes > to but then that changes my inbox to my name as the 'to' display. I have read numerous issues with this over the past 4 years but nothing has been fixed?
    Anyone?

I should add that this is not an issue of the badge telling me that I have mail and then when I open the app, it corrects itself.  The emails on my iphone actually appear unread until I read them again on the phone.

  • Mac Mail Error Message: 4.0.0 You have exceeded 400 recipients

Once in awhile, I cannot send emails. The error message I receive is the following:
4.0.0 You have exceeded 400 recipients in the last 24 hours. Please try later. I called Verizon, my internet provider and they couldn't help me. I called Apple and they said there was nothing they could do to help me--that I needed to get help on-line.
It appears that I am getting this because I have been marked as a spammer for some reason. I do not send emails out to more than 6-10 people at a time--and am not spamming. The results are that I cannot send emails for about a day at a time, however I still receive emails. Has anyone else had this experience?

It appears that I am getting this because I have been marked as a spammer for some reason.
    Welcome to the discussions, cad747.
No, it is a standard message sent to anyone that has sent over the limit, so if you genuinely haven't sent that many (which could be one message to 400 people, 400 messages each to a single person, or any combination you choose, in any 24-hour period) then you have to consider the possibility that someone else is using your .mac mail.
I don't use .mac, so cant help specifically. Try browsing the .mac forums (Apple - Support - Discussions - .Mac) and see if it is possible to obtain a log or if anyone is posting similar problems - or post there yourself.

  • Mac Mail Error Message Too Long

Trying to send numerous emails from address book via mac mail. there's an error saying 'can't send message using server.' then it lists all of the email addresses, which are very long. It actually goes off of the screen and freezes, not allowing me to delete nor move it. What to do?

The problem I'm having is the offending message has frozen the Mail application not allowing me to quit the app. I supposed I can force quit, but my understanding is that has negative effects on the OS over time. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

  • Mac Mail deletes messages after 24 hours

Mac Mail started deleting my messages after 24 hours 6 days ago. I believe this is a OSX Lion issue as I run 10.8.2 on my main machine (iMac 27 Dec 2010) but I also have an old iMac G5 (2005) running OS X 10.5.8, and on ths machine my messages are not deleted. An additional problem is that new messages to all accounts remain marked as unread for less than an hour on the new machine but remained marked unread until they are read on the old machine. My sent messages are not deleted.
I use a private email address from my own domain for all of my emails, except for a very few on BTinternet and Yahoo adresses. My webmail for my domain also is having emails deleted after 24 hours. I have spoken to the domain host customer care (very helpful) but they cannot spot the issue. And as it doesn't happen with OS X 10.5.8 it seems to me that it cannot be either the host or my current provider BT. However, I have only switched to BT recently and this deletion problem only started once their service was fully up and operating ( which was a long and messy process leaving me utterly disenchanted with BT).
I also have an iPhone 4S using iOS6 which doesn't delete but also doesn't show new messages as unread on my private domain address. On the iPhone new messages to my BT and Yahoo accounts show as unread.
I have time machine running with an external hard drive so I can see old messages there but thats a laborious procedure and the whole thing is doing my head in. Anyone got any explanations or, better still, solutions.

  • Mac mail sending messages to people not on distribution

When sending a reply to a mac mail message that originally had several people in the distribution the reply message will send to everyone in the distribution even if you manually take out an address from the message you are sending out.

In have a similar problem. I consistently request that names of all people on send list to NOT be shown to individual addressees, but consistenly are sent all the names.  Can this be corrected?
