Mac Mail won't remove copy from server

My mail remains in the ISP's Inbox despite the proper setting in my Mac Mail program to remove copy from server immediately after downloading. Even after I close my mail program, the old mail will not be deleted. I must go to my Inbox via the Net and delete the mail with a global tag/delete.
This problem began 5 to 7 months ago. Before that the auto deletion worked fine, and it worked fine in older versions of OS X. Is this an ISP compatibility? A bug in the current Mac Mail release? A bug in Tiger?
I asked my ISP and his first reply said this is one of many bugs in Mac Mail and I should switch to Thunderbird. I'll look at that but I prefer to use Apple software.
After 4 years I know how seldom Apple debugs Mail and Safari. Does anyone know if an update of Mail is on Apple's schedule?

Try changing the setting to After one day or When moved
from Inbox (and leave it at that), to see whether it’s just the Right > away setting that doesn’t work or that Mail fails to remove messages > from that server no matter what the settings.
I'll do that.
BTW, have you actually tried using another mail
client such as Thunderbird
to check whether the same happens there as well?
My ISP, who hosts a university and has a higher percentage of Mac users than most, recommended Thunderbird so I presume it does well here at Ntelos.net

In Mail I have checked Remove copy from server but they do not delete, In Mail when I have checked Remove copy from server but they do not delete.
I have a hotmail accout.  When the emails have downloaded and I "Get Account Info" in Messages on server it shows all the messages I have just downloaded if I switch to That have been downloaded to my Mac the display it is blank.  Also if I delete the downloaded messages and then get new info.  All the messages are downloaded again and the count of new messages increases (this increases every time I Get New Messaages) .

  • Remove copy from server 'when moved from inbox' option for POP accounts

Is this option supposed to work in all cases? (or could it be buggy?:-)
I can't get it to work with my POP account: messages are still left on the POP server, even after when they are moved from the inbox to another local mailbox on my Mac...
Manual selective removal of messages from the server does work (thru the 'Get info' window of the 'Gear' menu at bottom of Mailboxes pane), so this does seem to be a problem with the POP server.
Or do I by any chance misinterpret the meaning of this option?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mail version 2.1 (752/752.2)

You've interpreted correctly how it should work, as long as you take the following considerations into account:
    1. Messages aren't supposed to be removed from the server immediately, but rather the next time Mail connects to the POP server.
    2. It may have no effect on messages that had already been downloaded prior to you choosing that option.
And, yes, it sometimes doesn't work as expected. It could be buggy or Mail might have problems communicating with the server.

  • Mail isn't removing messages from server

I just got an iPad Mini and set it up to check my POP e-mail accounts.  I set it up exactly the way I had my iPhone, so that when I delete a message from the iPad it removes that message from the server.  That way any mail I don't want to deal with twice won't be there when I get home.
Unfortunately it isn't working.  I check mail on the iPad throughout the day, deleting the stuff I don't need.  When I get home, every single message downloads.
is this feature broken in the latest iOS update, or is there something I'm doing wrong?  I've been searching online and so far I cannot find anyone else who has documented this issue.

Okay, I'm with you part of the way. When I open Settings, Mail, Contacts, etc...  then click on the account in question, what I see is:
    Account (on/off)
    Name
    Email
    Description
    Hostname
    Username
    Password
    SMTP
    Advanced
There is only one on/off switch on, that for Account. And no sections for calendar, notes, etc... Perhaps we have different versions of iOS?

  • Mail not removing copy for server - POP acct

I have checked "Remove Copy From Server" in Mail Preferences>Accounts>Advanced. I selected "When moved from Inbox". Copies are not being removed after I delete them from my inbox - the deleted messages are still in my Inbox when I login to my mail account via the web interface. The messages are in the Trash in the Mail app. I am using a POP account from SBC (my ISP) that runs on the Yahoo mail platform. Any ideas or suggestions?

I am having the same problem with my Yahoo account. After monkeying with the settings and saving the settings for that on session it seemed to do it but when I closed Mail and restarted it it did not continue to remove the trashed emails. So this option is definitely broken, at least for yahoo.

  • Mail won't retrieve messages from my primary Comcast account

Apple Mail, Version 2.1 (752/752.2), downloads emails from my yahoo.com and gmail.com accounts, but it has suddenly stopped downloading emails from my primary Comcast account to my G5 iMac. I get no error messages.
Trying to retrieve email in Apple Mail can sometimes cause the Comcast email server to classify all unread messages as read. If Mail is set to "remove copy from server right away after retrieving a message," then all of my new messages are deleted from the Comcast server before I ever see them, even though they have not been retrieved.
Curiously, the only emails that Mail can access from my primary Comcast account are those that have been automatically forwarded from my secondary Comcast accounts. (Just out of curiosity, I tried manually forwarding a message from my primary account to my primary account; it could not be retrieved by Mail.)
My wife and daughter, on the same hard-wired ethernet LAN, have no problem accessing their primary Comcast email accounts with Mail on their Macs (MacBook and G4 iMac). Our settings for Comcast accounts seem to be identical on all three computers.
Perhaps coincidentally, I also have Comcast Digital Voice VoIP telephone service, and this email problem started while Comcast was troubleshooting problems with my voicemail. I use separate cable modems for phone (Arris TM402P) and Internet (Motorola SB5100).
I've tried: 1) rebuilding all of the mailboxes in my Mail Inbox; 2) deleting all of my emails on the Comcast server and emptying the trash; 3) setting the outgoing SMTP mail server on all of my email accounts to Comcast; 4) repairing permissions and running maintenance scripts; 5) shutting down the computer overnight; 6) Comcast support -- they try, but then give up and say that they don't support Apple Mail.
    I'd appreciate any assistance.
    iMac G5 1.9GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1 GB RAM

This problem was apparently caused by one of two things: 1) trying to use Mail with an AIM.com IMAP account; or 2) corruption somewhere in my Rules and Mailboxes.
I had to rebuild my POP accounts from the ground up. First, I backed up Mail preferences and messages. After quitting Mail and deleting the preference file com.apple.mail.plist and the Mail folder from Users/Home/Library, I launched Mail and created new accounts and new rules.
Prior to this issue, I had been using Apple Mail for three years to retrieve POP mail from Comcast and other accounts. This was my first experience with IMAP.

  • Mail 6.2 IMAP account removes messages from server

I've been running Mail fine for years but when I upgraded the Macbook Pro from Snow Leopard to 10.8.2 Mail began to remove messages from my mail server even though it is an IMAP account.
It is set to keep copies for offline use.
The exact same setup works fine on Snow Leopard in the iMac.
There are no plugins in Mail on the MBP/ML setup.
Have I missed some obvious setting?

Update - Attempted the following to resolve with no success:
    Shutdown and restart Mail
    Restart MacBook
    Disable and enable Exchange account
Monitored the Activity window and everything looked OK.
Review with Connection Doctor.  An interesting observation of the Detail screen of Connection Doctor is that I did not see any activity for my Exchange domain.  Activity was listed for all other email accounts except the Exchange account.  Hmmm......
Finally had to remove the Exchange account and re-create it.  Only then did the recent and other email appear.
    Arrrrgggghhhh......

my mac mail won't let me receive emails but will let me send them. How do i fix this ?

I am intermittently having the same problem. I can send email, but once the Mail application is opened, it will only pull emails in from the server one time and then I have to "Force Quit" and restart the application to receive incoming mail again.  I've tried restarting the computer. I've made sure I have all the system updates. I've checked for conflicts between applications and so far nothing fixes the problem. Once in a while, Mail starts functioning normally on its own, but in a few days it goes back to the same old problem. Has anyone figured out what if going on with this isse?

  • Mac Mail won't send messages through some accounts

For many weeks I've had to use gmail because Mac mail won't let me go through either my business server or my personal website. I can send if I just use the browser so I know they are working. I've tried various addresses for my out going mail- nothing. I've gone into preferences and disabled those accounts, quit mail, then reenabled them again- still nothing.
My secretary is having the same problem on her Mac mini. Any suggestions?

I've encountered this issue too and I believe it may be an ISP issue. When I set up a new internet provider at my home I was at first unable to send business mail from home. Eventually I solved the problem by calling the ISP and they either made an adjustment or had me change some obscure setting on my computer or modem (it's been so long I can't remember exactly what it was). I still sometimes run into this problem when I take my laptop elsewhere. One way to check and see if this is the issue for you (if you have a laptop) is to take your computer to a coffee shop or some other place with wifi and see if you can send out mail using your business address from there. You also might want to check and see whether you are able to send mail to other addresses within your organization, or whether the inability to send email is across the board. I mention that because I seem to remember that I ran into an issue of some servers being unwilling to forward email that comes from outside to another address that is outside. So if you try to send an email from home, using your business address, to an address outside of your business, it may reject it, while accepting an address within the business.
Hope this helps and please bear in mind that I'm no expert at all.

  • Mac Mail won't send .mac mail

All of a sudden Mac Mail won't send mail from my .mac account through it's mail server even though the MobileMe sends mail just fine.
Anyone know what may be up?
I hate using the mobile me mail.

I experienced the same problem--unable to SEND mail using MobileMe server. Changed to port 587, now seems to work (cross fingers).
I also noticed that I cannot change the incoming mail server name from "mail.mac.com" to "mail.me.com." When I try to change then save, it reverts to "mail.mac.com."
By the way, under the "Advanced" menu, can anyone explain "IMAP Path Prefix"? It's blank by default, I gather. Why might someone use a prefix here? Also the default port is 143 and the "Use SSL" block is unchecked.
    Merely curious.

  • Mac mail won't download my gmail anymore.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and everything was fine for a couple of weeks. Now suddenly, for no apparent reason, mac mail can not download emails from my gmail account anymore. It's downloading emails from my business account just fine - but not gmail. I didn't change anything in the settings. It just stopped. Any clue why?

My hubby's computer did same thing on March 12, 2013.  I tried many things, including 75 min with an Apple Genius who couldn't figure it out, but here is what finally worked:
First of all - Do a back up with time machine to make sure you don't lose what you currently have!!!
Try this solution for corrupt/problematic emails on your POP server... In OS X Mail, click on the In Box of the problem account in Get Info (Ctrl-I).
The Account Info window will show up and list all of the emails on the server.
Highlight the "Sender Unknown" "No Subject" emails in the list.
Click the Remove from Server button at the bottom of the window.
Before trying this I also tried:
    1)  Turn off Mail, shut down computer, unhook from electric for 5+ minute - then reboot computer & then reboot mail.  No change occurred.  So I moved to ...
    2) I went to online server to see that messages were actually there that hadn't downloaded because my mail (lower left screen kept showig 103 emails downloading - even though they didn't - even got the little "ding" mail incoming sound)  Emails were on my Frontier web page - but wouldn't download.
I went to Mailbox in Menu and went down to activate "REBUILD" - all it did was rebuild what was there and did not download the 103 emails on the server.  No change occurred.  So I moved to ...
    3) Went to computer of another family member and sent to frontier acct (the one having problems) and Gmail acct.  Gmail received the email but the frontier acct would not download the email I sent from other family computer that also has frontier acct.    No change occurred.  So I moved to ...
    4)  Went into "home" > Library > Preferences> and found:   com.apple.mail.plist and pulled it to desktop.  Still it would not download new emails.  Then set up new mail acct using frontier acct info - it downloaded all the old ones, but still did not download new ones.  ~ ~ Mac genious was frightened that I did this but I saw it on another forum as a possible solution.  No change occurred.  So I moved to ...
    5)  Made sure the little "offline" (wavey line)  "~" was not present, indicating the acct was offline, even though I'd already intentionally taken it offline and then put it back online from the menu.  No change occurred.  So I moved to ...
    6)  Did a "force Quit" of mail by holding down "apple" and "option" buttons while hitting "esc" button.  Still did not help.    No change occurred.  So I moved to ...
Finally found a forum that suggested the "get info" and delete the Sender Unknown emails from server.  This worked.  I only listed all the other things I tried because they did work for some people, according to other forums, so I thought I'd save you searching all over and you can try them in any order, but if you do try them, I'd do #4 LAST since the "genius" was aghast that I'd tried this.  Hope one of the "fixes" works for you.

  • Mail suddenly not being received from server. The ISP tells me there's nothing wrong at his end. I can see emails on the server if I look up WebMail; they don't come into Mail. I haven't changed anything lately.

Mail suddenly not being received from server. The ISP tells me there's nothing wrong at his end. I can see emails on the server if I look up WebMail; they don't come into Mail. I haven't changed anything lately. The incoming server details haven't changed; the Connection Doctor shows the accounts are connected; I've turned everything off including the modern. Have exhausted my limited knowledge. Anyone with something similar?

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.
