Mac Mini (2012) as Wireless Gateway
I want to turn my mac mini into a wireless gateway. I have "pf" I need to know how to turn on wireless ap mode on? What command line tools are available? OpenBSD has "hostapd" for this.
I plan to have my mini serve as my gateway router as well as media and file server.
Thanks!
what you have done is allowed resource sharing so that another computer can share the broadband connection via an ad hoc peer to peer connection.
however, this mini is not acting as a router, nor is it designed to, as it does not posses the server software. OS X Server does not currently run on Intel processors. if it did, then the Mini would be able to act as a router plus all of the other network security features that are available in OS X Server. Mac is likely to migrate all servers to the Intel platform, however when they do, it remains to be seen which intel platform that will be and if it will be compatible with Core (1) Duo / Solo processors.
wireless routers can be had for under $50 with the features that you seek.

Mac mini Server as a gateway/router
I'd like to make my Mac mini server my main gateway for my office.
I'd like it to perform the following tasks:
- DHCP & NAT for sharing an Internet connection
- a wireless access point so that no AEBS or TC is necessary
- VPN for access to the Daylite server that will be running on it as well as file sharing for remote users
My goal here is to create a single Internet alliance that will prevent me from having to use a separate router and will provide secure remote access to the LAN.
I have a Mac mini server and a USB Ethernet adapter. I connected the USB Ethernet adapter to the WAN which has a static IP. And the built in Ethernet to the gigabit switch for the LAN.
So far, I have two problems:
1) I can't seem to VPN in from remote despite my best efforts of setting this up with the gateway assistant.
2) I have no idea on how I can use the built-in airport card to become a wireless access point for the wireless clients in the office. I chose the airport in the gateway assistant but wireless clients are on a different subnet and can't see the LAN resources.
I'm interested in hearing other ideas and strategies on how to use the mms in this way. Is anyone else doing this? Everyone seems to want to use an AEBS or TC in addition to the mms and maybe I'm missing something but why would you need one?It wasn't so much the $50 that I was worried about... just the redundancy... having both an OS X Server AND an Airport Extreme (or third-party router) seemed like such a waste if the server could be made to do it all.
So, at this point, I see two options:
1) Put an AEBS on the gigabit switch (LAN) and turn off everything... essentially reducing it down to a wireless access point... and put it in Bridge mode so that wireless clients can see the wired LAN.
2) Use the AEBS as my gateway and DMZ the server... turning off the gateway features (DNS, DHCP, NAT, etc...) on the server. This would remove the need for the USB Ethernet adapter but would I still be able to configure it as a VPN?
Either one seems a shame. I was really hoping for a single-box solution to sell my clients.
The other problem is still happening... for some reason, I can't connect to the VPN... it doesn't even seem to be getting to the authentication part. It simply says, "The Server is not responding". This is strange since other services for which I've forwarded specific ports seem to respond without issue. I assumed that all the neccessary ports would be opened when I turned on the VPN feature... did I miss something? -
Is it right to mix sizes of memory modules in a mac mini 2012? for example 2Gb 8Gb?
Is it right to mix sizes of memory modules in a mac mini 2012? for example 2Gb 8Gb?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can do that without any problem, always that the total amount of memory is less than the maximum memory your Mac mini supports. A Late 2012 Mac mini supports 16 GB of memory, and you can find in this site the steps to install more memory > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4432?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#1 -
How to get two vga monitors on a mac mini 2012
Hi Guys,
please forgive any ignorance that follows. I am a new convert from a PC and have bought a Mac Mini 2012. I want to be able to use a monitor that I can see my music programme but run a second monitor that will allow me to display visuals from a VJ programme. Here is my journey.
I bought the mac mini and the thunderbolt to vga adapter. Generic VGA monitor - worked a treat. I then wanted to run a second generic vga monitor form the hdmi port. After a lot research I chose an adapter for £15 that one of the reviews said worked perfectly for a mac mini and VGA. Bought it form Amazon. Didn't work - no signal etc - refund. Then I thought I would buy a monitor / DVD with a HDMI cable and do hdmi to hdmi and use that as the music monitor and use the thunderbolt port for the projector and VJ programme. Bought one from Asda. Plugged in great picture etc worked a treat but got a ground hum from new HDMI monitor. More research and realised that ground hum was a nightmare. HDMI monitor back and refund.
It is doing my head in.
I will be a happier man if someone could say that they have a mac mini 2012 and they bought this HDMI VGA converter and use a generic vga monitor and it works a treat. There is only so much stuff I can return before my lick runs out.
I don't think I'm asking for much.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Cheers PeteSorry, but I can not safely suggest a digital HDMI to analog VGA converter or if any would even work with the Mac Mini because I do not have and have not personally tested any.
I can only suggest that instead of dropping more money into adapters or an HDMI to VGA converter, that perhaps' you should consider replacing one if not both with a more modern digital monitor that support either HDMI and/or DVI. -
I would like to use my iMac 7,1 as a monitor for my Mac mini 2012. Is that possible and if yes, what type of cable connection do I need? Thank you.
No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on Mac Mini 2012
Hello!
I've a new Mac Mini and I'd like to run it on Snow Leopard. Is it possible to install 10.6.8 on Mac Mini 2012?Only if you install it in a virtual machine under Parallels or VMware, and then only with some hacking.

OS X 10.9.2 on Mac Mini 2012 reboots randomly
Hi everybody, I have a Mac Mini 2012 2.3ghz model. I bought with Mountain Lion and everything was very very good. I updated to Mavericks from ML and, a little bit slow, but, I knew it, I needed update since zero. So, I did it, and, since that day, I have a lot of reboots randomly. One day, I had as 4 or 5 reboots in 2 or 3 hours. I mean, ***!!!. Sometimes that passed when I close Safari with a lot of tabs. Sometimes when I eject an USB or HDD. It's so randomly.
I've done repair permissions and pass it Ccleaner. The Mac is still rebooting. I have the last report. I hope you can help me. Thank you very much!.

If you mean AppleCare, then I would believe the answer will be yes.
First make sure you have a full backup of everything on your Mac, then run, don't walk to your nearest Apple store.
Note: Due to your Mac now being in computer years, somewhat elderly, Apple may not have the require parts in stock. This will either mean you might have to leave it with them for a number of days, or maybe they will offer you a new Mac mini. While a new Mac mini (if offered) might be a welcome possibility be aware that the new Mac mini no longer has a CD/DVD drive and it comes with Mac OS X Lion and as a result might not run some of your old software. -
Cable to migrate from Macbook (late 2007) to Mac Mini 2012?
What cable should I use to migrate files from Macbook (late 2007) to Mac Mini 2012. The ethernet migration took 30 hours. The Macbook messaged success but the Mini did not show that any files were transfered.
Where did you look for the migrated files? Look in the /Users/ folder and see if there isn't a new user account. If so, then log into that account where you should find what you migrated.
The only way to do a migration any faster and more reliably is if both computers have Firewire ports. If they do then you can use Target Disk Mode to migrate. -
Dual-screen with Mac mini 2012 ?
Hi,
I'd like to set-up a dual-screen on a Mac mini (2012), is it possible to use 2 HDMI monitors (1 to the HDMI output and the other to the Thunderbolt output with a HDMI adapter) ?
Thanks,
SylvainYes, that's perfectly doable. that's the way mine are set up.

Can I still use Appleworks 6.2.9 with Mac Mini 2012?
Can I still use Appleworks 6.2.9 with Mac Mini 2012?
Yes, MlchaelLAX, the KVM switch allow one to use one monitor, one keyboard, and one mouse between two computers. It has been so long that I'm not sure how to find the MODELS to the G4 and G5. Unless you mean what makes the Mac tick. The G5 is a dual 2GHz PowerPC, with 2 GB DDR SDRAM. The G4 is a bit slower, will look tomorrow.
I want/need a newer Mac model because unlike the days before OS X, all software was included as the newer OS were added, not so today. I'm still using Tiger because I still use a couple programs from the old days. When I eventually purchase a new model, I will have to buy all new software. That's find if one has plenty of money and wants to learn everything from scratch, but I'm hanging on as long as I can.
I tried TenFourFox, but it didn't allow video, of course since I tried Michael's suggestion, the video might not be an issue. So far, every thing works the way it should.
I have a lot of faith in Mac users, their loyalties to Apple is what kept Apple floating when many thought it would sink. These folks are survivors; I only wish the apple people on the top appreciated that loyalty today, but I guess things are too good.
Thanks to all for you kindness. Tomorrow I will show my husband how to remove his yellow threat on his G4. If anyone can answer any other questions, please know I will keep viewing this post.

Best monitor for mac mini 2012
I have bought the mac mini 2012 model and a samsung monitor SyncMaster s22B370. The text is looking blurry. You can look at this thread. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4497508?start=75&tstart=0. So I decided to buy another monitor. Can you please suggest a monitor which is working well for you.
I use a Dell Ultra Sharp connected with a Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter. This is the best setup for the least cost out there.

Airdrop can't not find my Mac mini 2012
I have an iPad mini retina, an iPhone 5 and a Macbook air 13 2013. They can Airdrop between each other in the three.
I also have a Mac mini 2012. However, neither the Macbook air nor the iOS devices can find my Mac mini. Also, my Mac mini can not find my other devices either.
I have read the thread which says Mac mini 2011 is not capable of using Airdrop. But mine is 2012.
The handoff works perfectly in my Mac mini 2012. I can switch apps between devices. I can answer my phone through the Mac mini too. So I wonder why airdrop is not working.
Anyone have the same issue?I have solved this problem.
If you add your Mac mini an SSD and you use some method to enable the trim, like Trim Enabler, you should use the reverse action of the app provided or command your use. Now airdrop will work.
Then enable trim again.
If you believe above is not your reason, try below command in the terminal.
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches
Then reboot your computer. -
Hello All,
There are Mac Mini 2012 with OS X 10.8.2 and Apple TV 3rd G with 5.2 (6010.96). There are 2 users on the Mac.
The problem is when I start Mac Mini and log on with one user I am able to mirror the desktop. When I switch to another user and try to mirrow the desktop, I see bad image (image full of green artifacts) with good sound.
One user is admin. It does not matter which user is sharing the screen first. It is always the second one that will not be able to mirror the screen till Mac Mini is rebooted.
At the same time if I try to airplay something from iPhone or iPad, it goes well.
Please help to solve the problem.
Kind Regards,
KirillWith update to OS X Mavericks the problem is gone
