I have a mac mini. what type of connector/cable do I need to output digital audio?

Some Toslink Optical Cable Kits come with 3.5mm adapters.
If you already have an Optical cable, then all you need is a > Toslink to Mini Plug Adapter
If not, then you will need a > Toslink to Mini Toslink Optical Cable

You certainly should be able to do that, not sure on your setup, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there.

Mac Mini Audio out only sending to right speaker

I am running a Mac Mini OS X 10.6.4 as media center. I am running video directly to my TV, which works fine. I am running the audio from the Mac Mini out the headphone output through a Y audio Left / Right cable to a sub woofer. The issue I am having is that the audio is only coming out the right side?
When I hook up a pair of headphones I get sound out of both sides, but when I switch it back to the Sony Soundbar it is segemented to the one side.
Any suggestions?

If the output works fine with a set of headphones and not the Sony soundbar, that suggests the cable feeding the soundbar or the soundbar have issues. Have you reversed the cable channels at the soundbar to verify that the soundbar is working correctly? If the working speaker switched sides, then get a new cable.

Mac Mini Audio out jack - s/pdif coaxial?

The MAC mini manual says " the headphone port is also a S/PDIF stereo 3.5 mini-phono jack".
So how do I hook up the MAC mini to my receiver's coaxial S/PDIF ports (standard RCA connector) - not optical Toslink ports.
Are there three choices:
1. stereo headphone (analog) output to analog input on receiver
2. optical Toslink S/PDIF via mini-Toslink adapter
3. mini 3.5mm S/PDIF jack to coaxial cable to RCA S/PDIF input (google search turned up a report this should be done with a monoaural 3.5mm jack)

Or is option 3 a misunderstanding of the Apple manual?
Will plugging a mono jack into a stereo headphone jack short circuit the two audio channels or do some other damage?
The guys at the local Apple store didn't have a clue about coaxial s/pdif nor did Apple support by phone.

You'll need three parts (this is exactly how my Mac mini was plugged into my coaxial digital audio receiver, but with a converter from Radio Shack that doesn't seem to be available):
1. mini-Toslink to Toslink cable (or Toslink cable with one mini-Toslink adapter)
2. An optical to coaxial adapter, like this: http://www.smarthome.com/777097rp.html
3. A coaxial digital audio cable (as you mentioned, could be a standard RCA cable)

Mac Mini drops out of "Shared" status in Finder of iMac - can't screen share-

I have a 27 inch mid 2010 iMac (with the WiFi problem fixed) 10.8.2
I also have a new 2012 Mac Mini. 10.8.2 + OSX Server (no monitor or keyboard/mouse)
(Both are connected via WiFi to a FIOS - Verizon/ActionTec MI424WR-GEN3I router.)
Randomly, the Mac Mini dropps out of sight to the iMac -- i.e. it no longer shows up in the "Shared" section of the Finder and, consequently I can no longer "screen share" with it.
However, OSX server continupus to serve up web pages as expected -- I can ssh into the Mini from the iMac with no problem (i.e. IP connectivity is fine). My Epson WiFi printer and my son's XP based PC show up in the "Shared" section of the FInder. Only the Mac Mini is missing.
At that point, the only way I know of to get the Mac Mini visible again is to do a "sudo shutdown -r" and viola it reappears in the Finder on the iMac.
Is there some other way to get the Mini to show up in the Finder of the iMac?
Is there some kind of "wake-up" command I can send from the iMac to the MIni via ssh?

Looks like half of the issue is answered... The WiFi in the mini DOES support WOL, as does the iMac.
However, the basic problem still remains --
The Mini is NOT sleeping, but actively running as a server 24x7 -- web and mail (I run my own domain) -- and I can log in to the mini via ssh -- but it is NOT visible as a shared device in the Finder on the iMac, and I cannot use screen sharing. Since the mini has neither keyboard nor monitor, I have to remotely reboot it via ssh - i.e. "shutdown -r" to get it to re-appear so I can screen share.
The timing is an isue. This "disappearence" seems to happen infrequently and irregularly, but has happened twice since I acququired the Mini on "Black Friday," not quite 30 days ago. If it were a simple "sleep" issue, I would have expected it to happen "hourly" or on some such frequency.
So, since WOL does not appear to be an issue in and of itself, I suspect I'll have to try to find out if "Shared Screen" is an "Advertised Service" via BSP.

Since I'm working with the Verizon/ActionTec MI424WR-GEN3I router (FIOS), which seems to handle all of the various protocols without issue, I may have to dig out my old Airport Extreme.
Now retired, I sold my old 4 story Victorian and moved into a one-floor one-bedroom, and don't need the multiple routers I used to run to inorder for WIFI to cover the house. Sigh.
And to think "I thought" I retired from the world of System Administration
I have a query in to ActionTec to see if they have a configuation Option I have not "deciphered" which will deal with the WOW issue.

Mac Mini Audio Intermittent over HDMI, Cuts out with Assertion in kernel.log

Hello. I've been having trouble with a mac mini (Mid 2011) that I bought on Thursday. It's running OSX 10.7. The Mac Mini is the $599 unit.
I've got it hooked up to my Sony BRAVIA HDTV (also this year's model) via HDMI, with audio configured to be delivered via HDMI to the TV alongside video. Initially the audio will play through my TV, but after an hour or two of watching something, it will cut out, and there will be no more sound coming out of the TV from the mac. Ultimately, the only way I can fix it is to reboot the Mac Mini. I've also observed that at about the same time sound cuts out, the following error message appears in kernel.log:

As far as I know, assertions failures usually mean software problems (bugs). I suspect I may be encountering a kernel-level bug in Lion, as this error message is showing in kernel.log.
The following is a list of diagnostic steps I've taken:
- I've double-checked the sound output device in preferences. It didn't spontaneously change from SONY TV (HDMI) after sound cut out.
- I've tried changing output to the internal speakers. It plays sound from the mac mini (as expected). When I change it back to HDMI, still no sound from the TV.
- I've tried turning off and back on the tv. No effect.
- I've tried unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable. No effect.
- I've tried replacing the HDMI cable with two other alternates. No effect.
- I've tried other HDMI inputs for my TV with HDMI attached. No effect.
- Note: I've got a ps3 and xbox360 on the TV that has successfully used the HDMI inputs and cables tested on. They've never had this type of problem, so I don't think there's a problem with the TV.
- I've tried rebooting the mac and resetting the "PRAM" (Command-Option-P-R before the grey screen on bootup). Sound still cuts out after a while.
- All updates are applied.
Does anybody else have any ideas about what I could try to fix this? This problem is pretty much a deal breaker, as rebooting the mac mini mid-movie kind of destroys the movie-watching experience.

I'd just like to jump in on this thread to report exactly the same problem.
2011 Mac Mini (the 2.5GHz i5 model) running Lion, Sony Bravia TV, HDMI sounds cuts out after a while with the console error "Aug 15 18:30:25 Mini kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDAWidget at line 3957 goto handler".
Interestingly, after the error occurs, I can still get 5.1 sound through Plex, but not through Quicktime. 2.0 sound and system sounds all fail until I reboot the system.
Any help would be appreciated. I would prefer not to have to return the Mini.

Audio output using HDMI in 2010 mac mini cuts out. Anyone know of fixes?

I have a 2010 mac mini that I hook up with my Samsung C6300 LED tv using an HDMI monster cable. I have never had any issues withn this setup prior to the new Lion software installed and ever since then the audio will cut out for a split second every minute or so (very annoying). I listen to my music library and watch movies through itunes and vlc and I experience this problem with all these tasks. I also have a MacBook Pro (early 2011) that i experience no such issue with while performing the same tasks. Is anyone else having such issues or know of a fix. All my software is up to date so I know that is not the problem. Any help would be much appreciated.

Lion has created numerous issues for 2010 MacMinis for
lots of folks. However, it seems there is not a "one shot"
fix for everyone.
For instance, I have no issues playing music from iTunes
on my Mini, but iTunes movies stutter some times to the
point of being unwatchable. Yet, other software, PLEX and
XBMC for instance, have no similar issues for me. But there
are others that are seeing the complete opposite from my
experiences. Basically, I think Lion has too many "loose ends"
that are causing such a wide variety and unpredictability in
its operation.
As for VLC, gave up on that long ago as it seemed to flakey
to me and never could get it to work consistantly.

Mac mini audio output problems

This is similar to a problem that appeared before, but with a different twist.
On 4 July all was well. On 5 July I switched on and there was no "chord" from the Mac. When I collected my mail - no sound from my speakers (which are part of my screen). Logged on to a couple of sites - no sound.
The System Profiler, under the "Audio (Built In)" category, says: "No Built-in Audio." I know that's wrong because it's always worked before and when I plug my headset in it works fine.
When I go to the Sound preferences panel in System Preferences, it finds the headset but if I unplug that it finds nothing.
I tried running the hardware test (by putting in the OS X install disc and holding D during startup.) It couldn't find a problem.
So, as far as I can see, audio output is fine for the USB headset output but not for the others. Is there a simple fix? The nearest Apple store is about 200 miles away and I don't fancy the idea of posting the Mac off.
(And I think it's still under warranty for a couple more weeks.)

macam installs a file called "macam.component"
if you have the same, do this - take that file out of:
(your hard drive)/library/quicktime - macam.component
and just put it on your desktop
restart, then in your sound pref's choose your audio output (if doesn't work restart again)
the first time i took it out, i had my sound back instantly, another time i had to choose audio output in sound prefs. you kind of have to try different things. after you get your sound back, you can put back "macam.component" to use your webcam.
it seems macam causes the problem, the two can not work at the same time.
the second thing: if you dont have "maccam" try plugging and unplugging output jack a few times and restarting until you have sound.
the problem still could be with the OSX 10.4.10 update / quicktime...or maybe even a hardware problem like others with macbooks were saying (with the red light), not sure.
people with macbooks and who have the red light on, say to use a paperclip to turn off the switch inside.
my mini does not have a red light on. i tried using a paperclip but it doesnt work.

Mac Mini audio weak

My spouse got a new Mac Mini 1.83GHz currently with OS 10.5.4. The migration process from her old PowerBook went fine. The only problem is the audio is weak. With all sound controls at their loudest and the Sound preferences Output Volume at its max, the sound is low to medium whether in Safari or iTunes. On my iMac it would be screaming if had that setting. I don't expect good sound quality out of the Mini but I would expect enough loudness. Also, the ViewSonic monitor being used has the same issue when plugging the sound cable into the Mini sound jack.

Wayne my response may not be relevant to your issue but let me share my experience.
I have a Mini 2.0 on a Bravia connected to a 5.1 AV system. The only way I got the thing to blast. Even Harman Kardon Soundsticks were unsatisfactory, hence the 1000w system.
First, the 3.5 audio jack on the Mini connects the 3.5 next to the HDMI on the LCD. (I use a DVI > HDMI for video). Then 2 RCA jacks connect the chosen channel (in my case 'TV') on the LCD to the corresponding channel on the AV Receiver and there you have it.
I have 600g worth of movies and music parked in an external and the 5.1 makes all the difference.

Mac mini audio resets to 44.1khz after boot

Hi, I use my Mac mini with EyeTV sat and the best performance is reached by setting the audio out to 48khz. Now this is easy done with the midi program but I find it annoying that after a reboot the audio resets to 44.1khz. I searched for programs that might do this reset to 44.1khz but could not find one. Does anyone have an idea how to keep the audio out on 48khz?

I absolutely agree that there is no difference that I could hear but video or tv seems to come with 48khz audio. At least EyeTV for my satellite television needs much more processor power and starts to stutter when the audio is not 48khz. This is a known thing with EyeTV, I'm not sure if it not just bad syncing or bad programming but I have to accept it Anyhow perhaps it is an OSX question?

These djs program usually use to way to work:
- dual sound card
- mutiple output on a single sound card
This program use the second approach.... but mac mini has only an output.
I remember that my last pc was able, using a tune program, to convert an audio input to an audio output to get 5.1 system.
I wonder to know if it is possible to convert the input to output with some kinda program, or is there any way to get working the pre-cue with a mini.

Mac Mini Audio

I bought a mac mini at the beginning of this month and a few days ago i noticed that the audio is only playing out of the right channel of my speakers
i've tried using the earphones that came with my ipod and its only playing out of the right channel too
any suggestions??

First, I'd check the audio settings in your system preferences.
Go to the  menu
Then, System Preference
Then Sound
Then the Output tab
Now, check the balance, and make sure it's centered and not to the right.

New Mac mini audio problem - beeping from audio output

Hi Apple fans
Please help me. I recently purchased a new Mac mini from my local store. It's three-and-a-half weeks old as of today.
It's an i5 2.3 with 8 GB of corsair RAM.
I like to watch movies and TV on it and have the audio connected to an external amp and speakers via the headphone output.
After a reboot today I lost the sound through that output. All that I hear through it now is an electronic beeping, six notes, descending in pitch, repeating.
I have no idea what it is, other than annoying since this happened on a brand new computer. Not looking forward to the idea of losing my mini for a week as Apple figure it out, but it may be all that's left to do.
Maybe somebody here can help me out - anyone have an idea what's going on? I did an fsck -fy already, and there seems to be nothing wrong, based on that check. For completeness sake, I ran the sound over a USB sound card, and the beeping noise was not there, and sound worked fine. Ditto for the internal speaker - no weird noise there, this seems limited to the headphone out port. I've tried different cables, and even amps, and a set of small speakers without amp. The noise is there when using the headphone jack, and it's absent when using the wee internal speaker or USB-based sound. Please help?
