Mac Mini backup to Airport Extreme

Is it possible to use my Airport Extreme to back up my Mac Mini in addition to my MacBook Airs?  Can you explain how I would do so.  I have read several posts that seem to indicate that connecting via the USB connection would make my Mac Mini look like another backup drive for the Airport Extreme.

You cannot backup to Airport Extreme unless it has a USB drive plugged in, and that is only in the case of the Gen6 AE.. Apple do not support TM backups to the Gen5 or earlier AE.
You cannot plug in a computer directly by USB.. the AE is now and forevermore a network device.. An AE Gen6 only with USB drive, can be accessed over network by ethernet or wireless. A mini can backup to that just the same as MBA.

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials.  And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online.    Hope you can find good use for them.  Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy.  I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

  • Mac Mini/Lion Server/Airport Extreme Won't Sleep...?

I am at a loss with this one.  I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini running OS X 10.7.4 Server (11E53) connected via gigabit ethernet to an Airport Extreme.  This computer will not sleep on its own using the system sleep timer.
If anyone has any ideas that may help, I'm all ears!  The Mac Mini should sleep as intended and the Airport Extreme router should wake it if network resources are requested via a Magic Packet.  This same Airport Extreme does wake the other computers on the network just fine when they are configured to Wake on Lan (womp 1 in the pmset -g output, below).
The server is configured to offer the following services: file sharing, Time Machine and screen sharing.
The power saver settings on the Mac Mini are configured to sleep in 45 minutes, turn the screen off in 1 minute and wake for network access is enabled.  The output of pmset -g is below for reference:
    Active Profiles:
    AC Power                   -1*
    Currently in use:
    hibernatemode      0
    disksleep          10
    womp               1
    networkoversleep   0
    sleep              45
    powerbutton        1
    ttyskeepawake      1
    hibernatefile      /var/vm/sleepimage
    autorestart        1
    panicrestart       15
    displaysleep       1
If the Mac Mini is manually placed in sleep mode, via the Apple Menu or the button on the Login Screen for example, then it will sleep just fine. While the Mac Mini is sleeping, it will wake properly when the shared resources are accessed via another Mac on the network. For example, if the Macbook Pro tries to begin a Time Machine backup using the Time Machine Server on the Mac Mini, it will wake just fine and the backup will complete with no issues. The Mac Mini will not sleep again using the system sleep timer and must be manually put into sleep mode.
There is one printer (Canon MP560) installed on the Mac Mini, connected via USB, not shared on the network and no print jobs stuck in the print que.
I tried using the PleaseSleep software but that causes problems when the Mac Mini is used via Screen Sharing.  When the Mac Mini is controlled remotely via Screen Sharing, PleaseSleep waits about a minute into the session and forces sleep mode, cutting the session short prematurely. This is unacceptable.
Also, there are no assertions that would prevent system idle sleep using the system sleep timer, as seen in the pmset -g assertions output below:

I Have the same issue with pleasesleep.
No ARD Session without sleep ;-)
My stup is a little bit different to yours.
My MacMini act as an HTPC for Plex and it dosent sleep as well.
I guess it has something to to with External USB HDDs or in your case printers or USB Hubs or etc. etc.
    I found a AppleScript called Nacrolepsy 2.0
It dosent work probebly right now but I hope It could be a solution in the near future.

  • Purchase and upgrade my Mac Mini G4 with Airport Extreme

Hello! Can anybody tell me the right part number of the Airport Extreme Card for my Mac Mini (original). And does anybody know any web site where I can purchase it? I already have the bluetooth device, i just need the wireless.
    Thank you very much.

Welcome, it may have been an idea to start a new topic but since you haven't, I'll try to answer some of your questions.
I have a company issued Router (not wireless) would I have to replace this with the Extreme or simply plug into one of the ports on the Linksys?
Since the new AEBS has not been released yet I can't give you a 100% answer, but based on its predecessor then I would expect it to be possible to use the Linksys as the router and the AEBS as a wireless access point connected by ethernet cabling.
It also states that to set up you have to install some software?? This concerns me as our company does not allow us to install anything on this PC. Any thoughts...Not a problem with the Mac, but I want it to also work with my PC's...
It depends what features of the AEBS you wish to utilize. If you simply wish to configure the AEBS using the Mac and merely connect to the AEBS as a wireless client through XPs Network connect then I think thiswill be a viable option. However, that said, the best advice is to wait till release when you can evaluate the AEBS 1st hand and see if it meets your requirements or not.

  • Configuring Mac Mini Server via Airport Extreme via Netopia Modem

Can any anyone help me with the settings to allow internet access to my Mac Mini Server by a Web browser. What way to you configure the modem and extreme.  The modem seems to want to duplicate a lot of the features of the extreme in it a has its own port forwarding  etc. I have manually set all devices with fixed ip addressas it shares the net work with a Windows SBS. I have a static IP Address and Domain name registered and hosted dns has the domain tranfered. Nat is enabled and ftp, itunes ports open.
Internet is working on the local network which has a 3 Capsules, IMac, and 2 apple TV's all working and streaming from the server. Running Lion from last week.
Would appreciate any help as this is is my first time to use the forum.
    Thanks again.

    First welcome to the discussions.
To set up the client you'll first have to ask the Network Administrator for the name of the VPN server. The username and other details you will need to log on.
You will also need to find out if the VPN uses PPTP or L2TP over IP Sec. with that information in hand open Internet connect in the Applications folder choose NEW VPN Connection then you click on either PPTP or L2TP whichever the network uses, then click continue in the confiquration pop up menu, Choose Edit confiqurations Then enter the information the Network administrator gave you.
Bear in mind that the OSX client does not work with all VPN's.
You may have to purchase a universal VPN client such as VPN Tracker from Equinux ($90.00).

  • Connecting Mac and PC to Airport Extreme

Trying to migrate some files from a PC to a Macbook and am having trouble. After many failed attempts, it seems to me the best way is to connect both the PC and the Mac directly to the Airport Extreme. I am asking if this is possible, will it work to move the files from the PC to the Mac and how to set it up correctly? Below are details on setup now, problems and various solutions, although just showing me how to attach both a PC and a Macbook to the Airport Extreme, is my primary need now.
NOW - The PC connects directly with Ethernet Cable to Airport Extreme. Airport Extreme connects directly to the ISP provided Cable Modem. The PC also connects directly to a Printer with a printer cable.
The Mac connects by Wireless to Airport Extreme (and Internet) and to to the Printer.
This arrangement is a result of the PC, more or less, falling apart. The PC wireless connection usually will not connect or fails, therefore I opted to use the Ethernet connection. By necessity, a D-Link is used in place of the two broken USB connections on the PC. Due to condition of PC, I prefer to leave everything as it is since it's working so far.
POSSIBLE OPTIONS - When I looked at various ways to move the files from PC to Mac, it seemed best to use an external hard drive, but I've not tried that yet since I am not sure how to change the drive's PC format to the Mac format without losing, in the process, all the files copied from the PC. I bought a new external drive that is supposed to work on a PC or a Mac, except that, with this PC,there is no assurance the drive will work. Two others I used as backup drives no longer can be found by the PC.
I tried to set up a network with the PC and Mac, but never succeeded.
Also, tried the file sharing instructions and never succeeded in that. In both cases the Mac just did not show up on the PC network places, nor does the PC show up on the Mac, despite my following instructions as well as I could.
That is why I would like to take what seems to use a more direct route to get the files I want from the PC to the Macbook.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive?

Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive (without currently being attached to a MAC OSX LION system)?

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

  • Is there a way to automatically backup the Airport Extreme Configuration file (.baseconfig)?

Is there a way to automatically backup the Airport Extreme Configuration file (.baseconfig).
I know (in hindsight) that I can manually export it from the Airport Utility, but ideally I would like to include it in my Time Machine backup. I had a situation where my Airport Extreme (3rd generation) just stopped working (no lights, no power). I had not exported the config file. I bought a new Airport Extreme (5th generation) and had to manually configure the new router.
    Thanks

One option would be to use Automator and record the actions to run the AirPort Utility; save the configuration file to the desktop (or any other location you want), and then, close the utility. You can then either make this a part of your login startup programs. Time Machine then should be able to make backups.

  • Where do i find the MAC address on my Airport Extreme?

Where do i find the MAC address on my Airport Extreme?

Your AirPort Extreme has two MAC addresses, one for Wi-Fi, which is called the AirPort ID and another for the wired connection, called the Ethernet ID
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
(Here, I am assuming that you are using AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion )
The AirPort and Ethernet IDs are on the summary page

My HP 2355 won't show up in AirPrint? I have it plugged in via USB and set it up on my Mac mini with the airport express network. Any advice?

Unless your HP printer is an AirPrint-ready device, just connecting it to the USB port of the AirPort Express base station will not make it so.
On the other hand, connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port it can be shared out by the base station's print server. Please see the following Apple Support article for details.

Where can I find the MAC Address of a Airport Extreme ?
I need this to extend the wi fi range in my home. I'm using a Motorola Cable modem and to extend with Airport Extreme, I need to set up inside Motorola the MAC Address of the Airport Extreme.

There are actually 3 MAC Addresses on an AirPort Extreme......1 for Ethernet, 1 for 2.4 GHz wireless and 1 for 5 GHz wireless.
You can normally see them by using AirPort Utility. The rub here is that the AirPort needs to be setup and working to be accessed by AirPort Utility.
The other approach is to look on the bottom of the AirPort. The newer AirPorts usually have this information in very small print, so a magnifying glass will probably be required. Other versions embed the numbers in the foam mat.
Note.....Apple uses proprietary settings for the their wireless "extend" feature.....designed to only allow other Apple devices to connect. So, it is extremely unlikely that the AirPort would be compatible with a 3rd party router if you are trying to use the AirPort to wirelessly extend the network.
Let us know if you are able to do this.

  • Can two macs use same disk for Time Machine backup with Airport Extreme?

    Hi
I use a Western Digital disk as a wireless Time Machine backup connected to the USB port on my Airport Extreme and it works great. My question is: can my girlfriend use that same disk for Time Machine backup from HER computer too? (I don't mind formatting the disk if needed.)
If she can't, is it then possible to connect a USB hub and have two disks hooked up to the Airport Extreme?
Thanks for helping. I am constantly in awe of all the help people like you give people like me. Thanks!!!
    Jakob

I've gone through the manual setup and the assisted setup and can't seem to get my MacBook to use the Time Machine. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
Well, as the Jolly Giant points out....+this type of configuration is not supported by Apple+, so it's difficult, if not impossible, to provide a fix for something that Apple says that you cannot do. Reference these Apple Support documents regarding this topic:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
Your situation is not unlike other users who try this and find that one computer may backup...(usually for a limited time before corruption issues start to creep in)...but another computer cannot backup. Count me as one of those users who thought that because things seemed to work that I had somehow "beat the system".
I started getting the corruption error messages after 4-5 weeks of successful backups, so I figured that it did not make sense to continue to try to get a second computer to backup (yes, I too could not setup a second Mac to backup).
Sorry, I could not get a second machine to backup, so can't tell you how to accomplish that goal. If you want to continue to try backing up this way, you might want to also think about a second backup strategy...just in case backups become corrupted on the WD drive.
Maybe if Apple says you cannot do this, they just may be right?

  • Two Mac Minis one with Airport and one without..and an Airport extreme

Please advise..I have two Mac Minis. One is older with no Airport card and one is newer and came with an air port inside. I also have an Airport Extreme and A Speedstream 5100 Ethernet ADSL modem. Here's the deal: I connected the old MacMini with no airport to the AirPort Exreme via LAN port. I also connected the Speedstream 5100 modem via ethernet cable to Airport Exreme. I can get onto the internet on the old Mac Mini with this set up. However, I cannot get the new Mac Mini's Air Port to work or "see" the network. Not sure what to do next...

I also connected the Speedstream 5100 modem via ethernet cable to Airport Exreme.
Just to double-check. Do you have the Speedstream connected to the WAN (circle-of-dots) port on the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)?
However, I cannot get the new Mac Mini's Air Port to work or "see" the network.
Which radio mode to you have the AEBSn configured for? The default is "802.11n (b/g compatible)". Also, which wireless encryption are you using? Do you have the AEBSn configured to not broadcast its Network Name (SSID)? ... or using MAC filtering?

  • Time Machine and External Hard Drive wireless backup over airport extreme

Ok can this be done? I have an external HD that I used a firewire to connect to my macbook pro and it backed up my movies, photo's etc without a problem.
When I realized I could plug the HD into the back of the extreme I tried that and I can see the shared HD in my finder but I cannot get time machine to backup wirelessly now and I can't see my previous back up in Time machine but I can see it when I look on the HD.
Can I continue to do my backups over the extreme wirelessly? How do i do this? Or do I have to plug the firewire and mac into the HD each time I want to back up using time machine?
    Thanks,

I hope that support is added to the airport extreme. I would be disappointed in apple to learn that they have disabled it for the airport extreme and connected hard drive in order to only sell another piece of hardware (time capsule) that is simply the airport extreme with a hard drive built in.
There are reported work arounds for getting the airport extreme and external hard drive to work with time machine. A couple google search results outlined the process, it didn't look too complicated. I would prefer it was a feature and not a work around though.

  • Mac mini and existing Airport wireless connections

    Hi.
If i purchase the new mac mini duo processor...I can supposedly hook it up to my old iMac and run Tiger on it...correct?
I am using Airport extreme to connect wirelessly to the iMac, the iBook and my Powerbook. Which Airport would I use then for the iBook and Powerbook?
I also have a PC that I tried to hook up to the Airport using a special app but that did not work. Now, if I hooked it to mac mini, I could then connect wirelessly using the mini's Airport?
Is anyone else totally overwhelmed by how fast technology advances? Most of these discussions...I have no idea what you are talking about.
If the mini is easy, sure to work, will update my system to Tiger, will still run some of my old iWork, iTunes, iPhoto, iLife, iDVD, Photoshop applications...then I will be happy.
But it won't update all of them to Tiger? will it?
    I think I need a Mac iPsychotherapist.
    PowerBookG4, iMac, iBook, Blue & White G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

To upgrade your old iMac to Tiger, you will need to buy a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). You cannot use the Mac OS X install disk that comes with your new Mac mini to update another computer.
If you want, you can move your iWork files, iTunes music, iPhoto pictures and other files & projects to your new Mac mini. The Mac mini will come with iLife '06, the current version, but you should be able to import all your files. The Mac mini comes with a 30-day trial version of iWork '06, you may need to buy a new, full copy to keep using iWork on your new Mac mini.
To answer your AirPort questions, let me first make sure I understand your set-up. You have an older iMac that is connected to the Internet with wires. Your iMac has an AirPort card inside and you're using that AirPort card to "share" your iMac's Internet connection with the other computers? Or do you have an AirPort Extreme Base Station and all three of your current computes are connected wirelessly?
If you have an AirPort Extreme Base Station, there's no reason you couldn't connect your new Mac mini to that network. There's also no reason you shouldn't be able to connect your Windows PC to that network.
