Mac mini ejecting hardware
hi guys, mac mini keeps ejecting external usb 3 hard drive, any ideas?
How long does it mount for?
Is it long enough to add that drive to System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy pane?
Did you install any Driver Software for any drive?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Mac mini server: Hardware test error on Hard Drive
Mac mini server: Hardware test error on Hard Drive
'checking for slow read failures': ERROR - Target device access failure - Test failed.
CAN I ACCESS HD (which is our data server) EVER AGAIN? IF SO, HOW?
Meanwhile we wonder if this is really a hardware error. It all happened during writing a time machine backup.
Probably while writing it, some data was relocated by accident, but we can not 100%-sure remember the sequence of actions :/
This is our trauma history:
- time machine got increasingly slower in writing a backup
- we quit the backup
- we switched off the mac mini (on power button)
- we switched on the mac mini
- we stopped time machine to the rules
- we shut down mac mini via command
- we booted the mac mini in save mode
- we see a loading bar
- no progress after 10th of loading bar
- switched off (power button)
- when we now switch on the loading bar below the apple-logo is all we see + the little wheel
- we started with cmd+alt+p+r pressed
- mac mini restarted but showed the loading bar scenario without progress again
- we started with 'd' pressed and did the hardware test (see above)
- we started with 'alt' pressed but it does not give us the recoverydrive to run the last backup
ANY IDEAS?
IS IT A SOFTWARE- OR HARDWARE ERROR?

I thnk Intenal 2.5" Drives for servers is silly, & Ithink the Minis & iMacs re poorly cooled.
I'd get Temprature Monitor & see what temps they're running.
Is Temperature Monitor an app or a device? If it's a temperature problem then that is essentially a design problem. Two drive failures in the same Mac mini server in four months combined with the fact that they're not really user serviceable already has me 90% on the way back to more pragmatically designed Linux servers. I think it would be foolish to waste any more money on these minis for my business hosting. -
Mac Mini 2010 Hardware Test w/ Lion
I have a mac mini 2010 that came with snow leopard installed. I recently upgraded to Lion, however I need to do the Apple hardware test. When I attempt to load the hardware test by holding down the D key when booting the Mac Mini the hardware test fails to load. What do I need to do to load the Hardware test?
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error -
Mac Mini Bluetooth hardware problems ?
I own a Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo 1Gb bought last October, an Apple wireless keyboard and an Apple wireless mouse, both I formerly use without any problems with my old Powerbook G4. By now, I used them with my Mac Mini it worked perfectly fine. But since two or three weeks, I’ve got big Bluetooth connection problem. Randomly, after one or two hours of use, both keyboard and mouse loose connection and the Bluetooth symbol change itself into a strange one. I had a look on your site to learn the meaning of it and the symbol is see which is a Bluetooth symbol with a horizontal zebra means that no Bluetooth hardware can be found! Does my Mac Mini built-in Bluetooth card have problems?
Since I haven’t got any wired USB keyboard or mouse I have to reboot my Mac Mini quite roughly. Sometimes one reboot is enough to make the Bluetooth of Mac Mini to work again, sometimes not and I have to wait a little bit more (more than ten minutes). I can see it works again as the Bluetooth symbol is the right one again (the one with the dots).
It is very annoying. And I am a bit sad to have such problems with Apple stuff. Is there something I could do to avoid such a waste of time? Or shall I call Apple Care for fear it should be a hardware problem.
Of course, I use brand new batteries for both of them.

My mini is doing it as well. Just started doing 2-3 weeks ago. Logitech Denovo or Apple Bluetooth. Doesn't matter which. Loses it in about an hour or so. Al Keyboards and mice were purchased at about the same time as the core 2 duo mini, ~ last October.
Must power cycle the machine to get it back and it must be paired again. Very annoying. Can't remember if it coincides with an Apple update.
This mini has had the superdrive replaced twice, once within 6 weeks of purchase. Ever since Leopard, it's been close to the best media head. now this...
Sigh.
(What makes it not the best? Frontrow doesn't sort titles correctly [1, 10, 2, 3 - wrong!], doesn't force mount aliases in the movies directory, doesn't put out 1080p without hacking. And I'd so love eyeTV integration with Frontrow. It'd be perfect then.) -
Can I install Snow Leopard on Mac Mini Server hardware?
What I would like to do is buy the Mac Mini Server but I don't need the server OS. I want the desktop OS on the Mac Mini Server. Will installing Snow Leopard on the server hardware be just like installing it on a regular Mac Mini?
Or should I just wait and see how Lion shakes out? Thanks Indy, I already had proceeded the installation according your tip. Just an objection related to the updates: I was able to install the OS updates only while in target mode, as when I made 2 attempts to update the version 10.6.6 to the current one (10.6.7 - the combo one and the MBP version too) it was not permitted. I had to plug the FW cable into the MBP again and update the Mini's OS (using the special MBP version of 10.6.7) in target disc mode. I want to use the Mini as a media server and intend to install Windows 7 on the other HD which now hosts the server OS. However, according to one poster (Sven G) there are some problems (I don't know exactly what they are) related to Boot Camp software. Have you any information about these problems?
I have maintained both OS (standard and server) living side by side on the Mini, is there any problem with that?
Again many thanks, you were succinct, right to the point, and your tip just proved itself correct.
Cheers

Mac mini ejects installation DVDs at startup
Hello,
I have a Mac mini core duo 1.66 Ghz with 2 GB, Superdrive, its is running Tiger will all updates and firmware. I decided to upgrade to Leopard. The computer is booted up, I insert the installation DVD for Leopard, double click on the intall icon, asks me to click on reboot. When rebooting the DVD is ejected and it boots from the HD normally. I tried pressing C on the keyboard at boot up and the DVD still gets ejected. I tried from System prefs the disk startup as the DVD, but the same. I thought it was my Superdrive so I bought a replacement, a Pioneer, it came with a Panasonic one, and the same thing. So I have ruled out the Superdrives. I tried the Tiger installation and the same thing, it ejects it as well. I tried the DVDs on other computers and they are not ejected, the installer runs. HELP!!!!I'm having the same problem. I have a mac mini, 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4, running OS 10.3. The CD drive is a Matshita CW-8124, CD-RW/DVD-ROM. I wanted to see if I needed to upgrade firmware prior to installing leopard, but couldn't find any mention of firmware for this system on the apple site.
The cd ejects on restart. If I put in the cd and shutdown, then boot while holding down the option key, it ejects the cd prior to bringing up the boot option screen. With the boot option screen up, I install the cd, but it doesn't see it. -
when i put a DVD-R in my 06 intel mac mini it whirs and then ejects it works with other disks but not blank it i looked in the communities earlier and someone said it might not be able to write but in my system profiler it says it can anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
thanks.

Mac mini has hardware problems and moving to a Ibook
I have been using a mac mini as a home server for the past 4 years and it is having hardware problems. I have an old Ibook with a bad hard drive that was not being used for anything so I hooked up the external hard drive that my mac mini was using and have successfully booted up my system. Most things seem to work fine but there are a few problems. Is there some way that I can reinstall programs like itunes or update the system so that it runs the new hardware that it is using correctly?
Thanks for any help***

Mac mini ejecting every CD/DVD in insert
I have a Superdrive, and it won't take any disc I inisert, CD or DVD. After trying to read it, it ejects it, no matter what application I have opne (iTunes, DVD plaer, iDVD, etc). Even with no apps. open, the discs just ejects. I was buring some iDVDs no problem, then all of a suddden this started happeneing.
Anyone have a clue what is going on?Well, I went to an Apple retail store this morning, and waited forver for a "genius" to help me. Most of the people in front of me ahd silly iPod issue...one lady was waiting there 'cuz her iPod didnt' boot..I told her (in line) "press & hold menu and play buttons"...it worked, she was psyched, didn't have to wait for a "genious".
Anyway, I knew my problem, laser burnt out, and all I wanted for them was to order me a new one. After 1 hour waiting, I decided the heck with it, and walked out. I decided to get a new Superdrive (8x) from otherworldcomputing.com, and install myself (I installed a 1 gig DIMM myself already).
Upside -> I wait 1 day, install it, and don't have to wait and driver 60 miles to the Apple store.
Downside -> I had to pay for the new Superdrive, and didn't take advantage of my 1-year warranty. There was just too long a line at the Apple store....some of the issues folks wanted help with...I got very fustrated.
Anyway, just a rant...

Highest possible quality setup on FMLE on a mac mini.
What is the highest quality setup I could put on a mac mini and use FMLE? I want to maximize video quality but the HD camera I bought doesn't work. This is on a mac mini so hardware based capture cards are not an option.
Yes you can use VNC.
Install a vnc server on her mac.OSXvnc
Install a vnc client on your mac.chicken of the vnc is a good vnc client. -
Mac mini with 2 - 500GB drives running X serve
Hello - What is the best way to setup raid on a mac mini running 10.6.4x serve that does nothing but serve up netboot? Looking for suggestions..
ThanksXserve is hardware.
Xserve boxes can have in-board hardware RAID, depending on the particular system configuration.
Mac OS X Server software can boot and operate both on Xserve hardware and Mac Mini Server hardware.
Mac OS X client and Mac OS X Server both offer software-based RAID-1 capabilities.
Netboot is apparently how you're booting Mac OS X client or Mac OS X Server here; the Mac Mini Server box apparently isn't booting off its local disk(s).
If your Netboot image is set up up for and showing it is operating with mirroring once loaded into the Mac Mini Server, then you're running RAID. (Mirroring is software-based RAID-1, after all.)
Mac Mini Server boxes do not offer in-board hardware RAID capabilities, though there are various out-board hardware storage options with support for hardware RAID, in addition to the available software RAID option.
And for completeness, stay away from RAID-5; it has rotten failure modes, and it's getting more and more unreliable as the disk capacities increase. The likelihood of a secondary and catastrophic failure during a RAID rebuild increases with the capacity of the disks involved. (And you don't have enough disks to consider RAID-5 here anyway, but it's fairly common with out-board RAID.)
Also note that RAID is not an archival strategy. RAID protects against disk failures, and not against deletions, accidental operator error or malicious user activities, nor against volume or file corruptions. -

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Snow Leopard Server Software - Mac Mini Copy vs Retail Copy
Hi All,
I recently purchased a mac mini server, with what I thought would be a SL Server license.
I've used the Mac Mini to run a Leopard server whilst our Xserve was out of action.
Now the xserve is back, I was thinking of installing SL on the Xserve and keep the mini running leopard until we migrate over.
When I tried to install SL on the Xserve, it gave me an error. I rang Apple, and the enterprise guy told me this wasn't possible, as the copy that came with the mac mini was hardware specific and just a restore copy of snow leopard server. Bottom line I can't install the Mac Mini version of SL on an Xserve, even though I have paid for a SL license in buying the mac mini!
Does anybody know if there is any real differences between the hardware specific software copy and a retail version. If there isn't I'll install a copy on the mac mini and copy it over to the xserve. I just want to be sure that I'm not getting a downsized version of software!
Thanks. There are ways to extract the OS from the restore disk so you can use in other system. you will just have to do a little online search. but I think it will be illegal if you care of course... but it would probably be easier to just download a copy from rapidshare or something like that and use your key ..
As far as feature there is none between the restore and retail copy. -
Mac Mini Server with Lion (without Lion Server) ?
I intend to buy a new Mac Mini and obviously the Server Hardware version is the best option with a i7 Quad Core and 2x HDDs (the option to 2x 750 is $100 whereas the option for 1x750 is $150 !!! for the standard Mac Mini) ... well lets make it shor, I would like the Mac Mini Server hardware but I don't want the Server components in the OS, I don't need them, I don't want to configure them. Does anybody know for sure if I can deinstall the Server components easily ?
ThxHi RajPad,
i have not yet found a commandline tool to remove pages. If you're familiar with SQL you can use a tool to connect to the postgresql database where the pages are stored.
I won't try to write a "howto connect to pgsql on lion" here because i know this has been answered already.
If youre connected to the database collabd and you have a page url like:
http://my.lion.server/wiki/pages/P9c196z/somepage.html
Then your SQL to find the entity is:
SELECT * FROM entity where tiny_id='P9c196z';
Note the uid from that result and find and remove all related entries in other tables there after removing this entity.
I have not excercised that myself because i don't have a system to screw
Make a Database dump prior to your actions and hope nobody is editing pages while you're at work.
If you have a plain SQL dump you could pick individual datasets from there to rebuild if something goes wrong. You'll only have to note what you changed to be able to revert.
Just an idea ....
Make a copy of your page and compare both pages in database. If one is working and the other aint you should be able to find the difference.
Good Luck

Mac mini doesn't see/eject/burn cd's/dvd's
My Mac mini no longer recognizes cd's/dvd's - I have a cd stuck that doesn't show up on the finder, and can't be ejected. There have been a few instances over the last few weeks where the cd will appear in the finder. I can then eject it, but when I insert another cd, it disappears.
I am experiencing similar behavior from my external dvd burner, which suggests to me that this is a system/os issue. Both had worked fine for years, and there have been no significant changes to my system since.
Here's what I've tried, based on research at Apple Support:
Eject key in sleep mode
Cmd-Opt-O-F on reboot
hold mouse key down on reboot
Disk Utility disk permissions repair
Onyx disk repair
PRAM reset
Nothing has affected my situation. Please advise. Here is the most simple trick that always gets overlooked with discs stuck in drives - Open Toast (or a burn folder), drop some data in to burn, click burn and "Wulla!" the disc magically comes out (most of the time). Too easy, isn't it? - This is also a good way to check if your drive is being recognized by the system. The fact it happens with your external drive as well points more towards the kind of discs you are using and their condition, so it might be worthwhile experimenting with a few different brands of discs. Try running the hardware test from your OS disc and see if it finds any errors.
