Mac mini only logs on to guest

I seem to have lost my admin account access....when I boot up, all I get is the guest account access. How do I get my admin account back?

That's not really an account; it's the "Find My Mac" pseudo-account.
What backups do you have?

It sounds unlikely of course. But from your question it's hard to tell what might have filled your HDD. Are you constantly on file sharing or has filled the drive with movies?
Best way to tell is to start checking what folders occupy space. "Get Info" for the HDD and its subfolders is a way to start checking where the data in question resides.
And as BGreg say, call Apple support is also a good way to begin with.

Only with a whole lot of effort and instability.  As the new Minis have
hardware (HD4000, USB 3.0, etc.) that is totally unsupported in old OSes.
The only option would be to see if it would work by installing in a virtual machine
running 10.6.8.  I'm sure there will be some performance hit but whether it would
be enough to be unusable is the question.

Your model number is needed to determine how far it can be upgraded and how easily.

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

  • Mac Mini only boots to wallpaper

I have a 1.66 older mac mini that I am trying to set up but whenever it boots it only goes to a picture of the desktop, No log in screen and it only finishes about half of the loading mac osx progress bar. i ran the permissions and disk check and it is ok. tried reseting the ram running the fsck. If i leave it alone and it goes to sleep at the walpaper screen, it comes back with a bluetooth setup assistand unexpectedly quit message and will not allow me to make any selections. I think i am going to have to reinstall the os (i am ok with) but I have to wait a few days for the appropriate cd-dvd to come to me, but is there anything else i can try in the meantime?
    Thanks

Yes, I'm using an Apple USB Keyboard.  I have tried the keyboard in other USB ports and the keyboard was working fine before.  I have no Ethernet connected.  Just power, video and the USB Keyboard.  I also tried it without the keyboard and have tried both video ports (HDMI and Display Port) with the same results.

  • How to start up MAC mini only in the verbose mode (command line) , no GUI

Can anyone let me know how I can set up the mac mini to ALWAYS boot into a verbose mode only, no GUI interfaces at all?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, Andy your replies are really helpful. I did tried your method and also followed the link http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/h/348
Now my mac mini - Tiger seems hanging forever at the boot up screen. A Apple log showed up with a message "Starting Mac OS X ..." and now almost 5 minutes passed, nothing happened ...

  • My Mac Mini only initialises if I unplug the USB hub

My Mac Mini will was not booting was remaining with a white screen. I discovered that it only completes the boot if I unplug a USB hub that I use. But it was working fine with this same hub connected and this syntom began after I turned it off and disconected all the cables to clean the computer and my desk. When I turned it back on, nothing happened... only a white screen...

I unplugged all devices from the hub, but it didn't solved the problem, so I think maybe the hub is the culprit.
The strange thing is that it was working fine till today. After I unplugged everything from my Mac Mini and then plugged everything again, the problem started.

  • Brand new Mac mini only boots into recovery mode...

I just picked up a brand new mac mini a couple of hours ago and right from the start, it asked only for a language perference and then after that having been selected, promply went straight to the OS X Utilities screen.
I cant seem to get it out of this mode.  And because I do not have an internet conncetion set up on it, I can't, for example, re-install anything or restore or...
It's basically a boat anchor right now.

Startup holing the Option key and see if the Startup Manager will allow you to select the Macintosh HD.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If not, then return it for either a full refund, a replacement system or help.

  • Mac Mini spontaneously log outs

    New machine.
Hooked up to LaCie Thunderbolt external drive on which resides the iTunes library.
Ethernet connection to Time Capsule basestation.
Apple TV3 also connected by ethernet to Time Capsule basestation.
Mac Mini set up to auto log in on start up. Sleeps after 10 mins. Screensaver set to never.Security > General: "require password after sleep" is UNcheked.
Still the Mini seems to be logged out when awaking from sleep and the iTunes library is unavailable to the Apple TV3.
    What is wrong?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Advanced... ▹ Log out after … minutes of inactivity: Off
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, you may need to click it to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.

  • New Mac Minis only accept Lion?

We are in the process of purchasing some Third Party Software which will only run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or earlier - it will not run on Lion. However, we need to purchase a Mac Mini to run this software, and I have been told that the new Mac Minis will not run any pre-Lion OS. Is this true? I can't find any reference to it, but this is a big concern - will I need to purchase an older model Mini to be able to run Snow Leopard?
    Hope someone knows.
    Thanks,
    Eoghan.

You can't. I was answering "will I need to purchase an older model Mini to be able to run Snow Leopard?" earlier.

  • Brand new Mac mini ONLY displays when waking from sleep

    Have an unusual problem.
Brand new 2011 Mac mini.  Turn it on, and I do not get the grey Apple logo screen or normal spinning cog.  Light comes on as normal, and chime chimes as normal.  I've tried three different monitors now and I never get a display, unless I put the mini to sleep with the power button in back, then wake it with a keyboard key stroke, the display turns on and works as normal.
As of 20 Sep 2011, I've got all the software and EFI updates installed.  I've also reset the PMU, SMC, PRAM, and NVRAM to no avail.
    Thanks.

Yes, sure did.  Tried different cables and Thunderbolt to video adapters.  Don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm using VGA.  Originally tried it about a week ago with DVI and it worked ok.  The problem is the monitor we're using in our classroom doesn't support DVI or HDMI.

  • My sound port in my Intel Mac Mini only periodically works

, and when it's working it crackles horribly.  This happens when I plug in the external speakers AND with the internal speaker.  I have bought this mini used, and it looks like extra RAM was added to the unit, but I have no way of knowing if apple installed it for him.  HELP!

It could be anything from a bad audio card to a loose output jack.
Most likely the combined cost of the used Mini plus the out of pocket service and repair bill is probably going to end up costing you more than if you just went out and bought a new Mac Mini.
Sadly buying used really limits your options, you should either return it to the seller for a full refund or have them pay for the service and repair cost.

  • Mac mini only sometimes displays

i have a 2014 mac mini, intel iris graphics, 16 gb of ram and a 3.0 GHz i7 processor. a lot of the time my mac mini will display fine with no issues. but sometimes i turn it on and it just says no signal indefinitely, and i have to turn it off and on again dozens of times before it will finally display something. other times i wake it up from sleep and the image will be distorted or just snow. this is my first mac, and right now i'm thinking it could be my last.

    - Try another monitor and cable

  • My mac mini keeps logging me out after no activity.

the option to check/uncheck, "log out after X mins of no activity" is not an option to select.
when it forces a logout, the screen saver is showing, not moving, and when you move the cursor, it acts like an eraser and removes the part of the screen savor picture revealing the login screen underneath. of course this starts happening when my warranty period is over.
can anyone help? i've looked all over the net for this issue.
    thanks.

I had already done that for the screen saver a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, since I'm new to mac I can't do a screen shot, but several users had recommended going to Apple > System Preferences > Security & Privicy > General and uncheck the box " Logout after [______] minutes of inactivity." There was a screen shot in one conversation I had and it showed 5 options under this specific tab, including the auto logout option. My mac only has 4 options and does not include the logout option in this area. So I started looking around under every single app under System Preferences and when I opened Security & Privacy, on the bottom right corner is a button for Advanced. I opened that and the option for Auto logout is there. I unchecked it. So we'll see if this solves the issue.
Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it.
