Mac Mini running my home network
I have a MacMini, a Mac Book Pro, and an iMac. I would like my iTunes, iPhoto, and all archived documents stored on the Mac Mini I also want my mobile devices iPhone and iPad to be synced to the MacMini? On this kind of networking configuration my knowledge is weak so if there good documents out there that can help (preferably with images) or I don’t mind having tech support walk me through the process so I get it right. All suggestions welcome
For sharing iTunes content, you could just set up Home Sharing in iTunes on the
Mini and have it running all the time. Then the Macs could connect via sharing
to the Mini to access the content. All the content would be available and you
could "cherry pick" those items you wish to keep locally on each of the Macs.
As for syncing iDevices, if you have iTunes up and running in the scenario
above, iTunes would just need to be running under the account that the
iDevices have been synced to in the past. You then can set up the
iDevices to WiFi sync to that iTunes.
Go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ and look into sharing to see
if Home Sharing will do what you want.
Go here to see how to set up WiFi syncing:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386
I beleive iPhoto has similar capabilities for sharing, but since I don't use
iPhoto I will defer that to someone else.
For documents, just simply set up a folder on the Mini and set up
sharing priveledges for it. You will also need to allow file sharing
in System Preferences.

Can't print from my mac mini on a home network
My husband died suddenly and has left me with a load of networking problems. Everything was fine (I think) until I changed my ISP. My husband had set up our printers on a wired network, and I know wires go in and out of machines and routers, but there is a lot of physical rubbish about that trying to find how it all fits togther isn't easy.
He worked everything from his computer, a Mac Air (bought January 2011) running 10.8.3. I have a Mac mini (bought August 2012) running 10.8.2, so it looks like I'm just sluggish without him to prod me to get updated.
I can print from the Air, but I can't from my mini. Do I need to have file sharing, do I need a location code or something, if so, what is the location I should use? He knew all this amd we were going to sit down and make a manual for me as the techie thickie, but his cancer suddenly took a turn for the worse and he died suddenly and unexpectedly before we could sort it out.
I am fairly computer literate, htough I'm not the cleverest at computers, but I am streets ahead of many at the office, some of whom don't even know what a key stroke is, honest!
Thanks
TimI assume these are Ethernet cables running to the Routers.

Small Business w/Mac Mini Running Server OSX, Connect From Home Solution - VPN?
I am trying to setup my Mac Mini running OS X Server (Mountain Lion) to be accessed from users at home (for file sharing and Contact Services). Is a VPN the best solution? (Small business setup - privacy/security a concern).
Hi everyone, and Thanks for the help in advance!
I am currently setting up a network for my company (small business) and have a few questions. We have a Mac Mini (mid-2012) running Server OS X Mountain Lion, and 5 MBP's (our work computers- all running latest version of Mountain Lion).
To summarize:
My goal = Setup a secure way of connecting the MBP's to the server when our personnel are at home (for file sharing).
I am switching all of the users from local to network (we didn't need the network functionality when we first setup the server, and we are now expanding our use of it). This is going to occur this weekend, as downtime for the server is needed to make the changes.
After I establish the Open Directory and all of that, I will be setting up Contact Services (to share a master list of contacts with the members of our department) and we already have some Calendar sharing setup.
The purpose of this is to enable our employees the option of working necessary overtime from home so they can be with their families instead of in the office all the time. It is a noble cause and I want to set this up the best that I can for them.
This being said... I'm no Mac Genius, and this stuff can get very confusing very fast. I have read a little about VPN's, and am wondering if this is the solution to my problem. We need to establish a SECURE way of connecting to the server from remote locations, enabling us to pull needed files from the server.
If anybody can offer some advice on this I would really appreciate it. I love Apple products and I have faith that this is as easy as I've been told it is.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration! No, it wasn't difficult at all to setup in OS X Server. I use a free internet domain name from DynDNS.com. I don't know if they still offer free ones anymore. You can not use VPN and 'Back to My Mac' at the same time as they use some or all of the same ports.
I'm at work and not on my Mac at the moment so this is from memory.
Within OS X Server, I enabled the VPN Service (default L2TP) and used my free domain name in the VPN Host Name and a Secret passphrase. This put an entry in my Airport Extreme router for VPN (port mapping).
Within the client Mac, I added a VPN network connnection (System Preferences /Network). I pointed to my free domain name in the Server Address, used my Server account name in the account name. I think there's an Authentication button that I clicked. I entered my Server account password, the Secret passphrase in the Secret field, checked a box to show VPN icon in Menu Bar and exited out of that. Then clicked the Advanced button and checked the box to send all traffic over VPN connection.
I had VPN authentication issues at first when trying to connect to test out the connection. I just kept trying as I knew I had all the settings correct and it would finally connect after about 3-4 tries. After that, I sometimes have to connect more than once to actually connect to my Server via VPN. But it does work nice. I brought my MBP into work once to test it out and was able to connect to my home Server via VPN and use Screen Sharing and had access to all my shared folders. -
Using Mac Mini running OSX Server (10.8) to host web sites on LAN
I would like to know how to use a Mac Mini running OSX Server (10.8 ML) to host web sites on my home network (LAN).
I am developing web sites and previously (before ML) I used my Mac Pro to 'host' the sites I was developing to test them out before publishing them to my hosting package. That was when I was using 10.7 Lion and theer was an option in the System Preferences to turn web sharing on.
I have since upgraded my Mac client to 10.8 ML and have configured it to do the same - even though there is no System Preferences option for web sharing any more.
I also have a Mac Mini running on my LAN and its been upgraded to OSX Server 10.8.
Im now trying to configure it to host the web sites I am developing but with no success.
I thought it was just a matter of adding them as sites in the Server's Websites panel (see screen shot)
but so far Ive had no success.
On my Mac client I can simply add a folder in the Sites directory and then open the web site by putting http://myhost/~myuser/name-of-folder and it will load the default file in the folder e.g. index.html
How do I achieve the 'same thing' on OSX Server?Hi Johnfromglenver,
There are no Mac drivers for the HP Officejet K60 printer. Therefore it is not compatible with the Mac operating systems. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpsupport/index.pl. There may be other solutions that could work for you.
I hope this information helps.

Hello,
This question has been posted many times all over the internet but the responses are not specific to what I need to know. I have a MBP 2010 that is my main workhorse for everything. I was thinking of adding a Mac Mini to my network to host iTunes so that when I take my MBP away from my network I can still stream media from iTunes. I also do not want to worry about having to remebert to turn on my MBP if I decide to stream from iTunes. Basically, I want a dedicated iTunes server.
The price of a Mac Mini is not cheap and I could build a windows platform to handle the iTunes service but I do not want to deal with cross platform issues.
I want to know what other things can I do with the Mac Mini besides have it host my iTunes library. I have a drobo fs and was going to hook that up to it for storage.
I have been reading online that I can access shared folders with the Mac Mini so I can still access the drobo from my MBP. I might want to host my own website later and thought that was a cool feature of Server.
I dont have any other Macs in my ecosystem. Could I access the Mac Mini remotely and share files that way if I want to. I am thinking if I get the Mac Mini I can off load some contnet off my MBP and some tasks to the Mac Mini. Im not sure what else I can use it for. I guess Im asking how can I get the most out of a Mac Mini?
Sorry if this thread is sort of inconsistent with asking for help. I went into the Apple store to take to someone about it and they were fixated on my Drobo thinking that it could do all the work that I wanted to do. They had no idea of what a drobo was.OS X Server does address iOS devices through Profile Manager. I'm not versed on that because I don't use it.
Yes, with VPN you can share files and Screen sharing remotely when not on your Local Area Network (LAN).
A Mac Mini can be "the brains" if that's what you want. I use my Mac Mini as a home server. I keep files for Macs and PCs on it so those computers don't have to store them on their local computer. I use VPN so I can access files when away from my LAN. I have a USB 3.0 drive I use with the Time Machine service to back up my MBP Retina over the network. I have my iTunes files on the server and use iTunes Home Sharing to share THAT iTunes library to all computers on the network.
I purchased the base model ($599) which I feel is inexpensive for a home server. It has the base RAM of 4GB which works perfectly for me since it's not using CPU/Memory resources like my Retina does which is my day-to-day computer. -
Mac Mini keeps disappearing from network
I have a 2009 Mac Mini running 10.9.1 that is serving as a media center computer. Plex Media Server is on this machine along with my collection of movies and TV shows. I frequently access this machine using Plex clients, both on Mac and Roku, and also via file sharing and screen sharing on other macs. I almost always manage this machine through screen sharing, which makes this problem extremely frustrating.
Basically this mac keeps disappearing from my network. I can see it under "Shared" in finder on another computer, but when I click on it it hangs on "connecting" for a while and then just disappears. Same thing when trying to access via the Plex client on Roku. Sometimes I try to play something and it tells me to make sure my server is connected and running, and sometimes it doesn't even see my Plex media server at all.
I have screen sharing and file sharing enabled, and the firewall is set up to allow incoming connections for screen sharing, file sharing, and also Plex and all its helper programs. I don't think any of these should be the issue because I can access the mini with no problems SOME of the time just not all the time. Seems like if I haven't connected for some unknown amount of time this problem crops up. When it doesn't work I have to trot down to the basement, turn on the monitor (100" projection screen, so kind of annoying) and restart the computer. I have tried toggling "Put hard disks to sleep when possible," and that didn't seem to have any effect. I also have the energy saver set to wake for network access.
I do not recall having this problem as often, if ever, before I upgraded to Mavericks. Not sure if that could be part of the issue. One other quirk since upgrading to Mavericks is that upon every restart I am asked if I want to allow incoming connections for Plex and Connect 360, both of which are listed in the firewall preferences ad allowed programs.
Can anybody help?See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

I have connected a Netgear Readynas RND2000 v2 to my Mac Mini running OS10.10.1 but it is not appear on my LAN what is going wrong?
What is a "Netgear Readynas RND2000 v2"?
Can you provide a link as to what it is?
If you mean a NAS (Network Attached Storage) did yo follow Netwgear's setup instructions? You connect a NAS to your network, not directly to your Mac -
My Mac Mini runs very slowly. I upgraded memory but it didn't help. Wi-Fi is very fast with other computers in sae location so I don't think that is the issue. Ideas?
Hi, is it just Wifi that is slow?
If so try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
Click OK. -
I have created three new users without Apple IDs and they can't log into either of my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. These accounts are for my kids and originally were setup with parental controls and time constraints. Thinking this was the problem I removed the time constraints, removed the parental controls, deleted and re-added them, and made them standard users. I have reinstalled, used disk utility to repair permissions, and made them admins. Any help is appreciated.
Users don't need Apple ID's. That's not the issue. Have you tried repairing permissions their accounts?
http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
Repairing User Permissions in OS X Lion
You’ll need to reboot to perform this, and then use the same resetpassword utility that is used to change passwords in Lion, but instead choosing a hidden option.
When you use the Disk Utility app and Repair Permissions — it doesn’t actually repair the permission settings on folders and files in your Home folder where your documents and personal applications reside.
In Lion, there is an additional Repair Permissions application utility hidden away. This tool is located inside boot Repair Utilities. Here’s how to access it.
Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys. You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac. Notice that ‘Spotlight’ starts re-indexing immediately. -

I have forgotten my Password to be able to connect between my desktop Mac and Mac Book on my home network. How can I recover the password or change it?
The password used to log in to a user account remotely is the same as you would use to log into it locally. You can also use your Apple ID, so try that.
To change your login password read OS X Mavericks: Reset a login password

Not sure how to diagnose issues on my Mac, but I gathered I should run Etre and post results here. I know I could add more RAM, but this is so slow that I have to believe something else is going on. Can someone spot anything unusual in the following?

HP Pavilion 27xi Monitor: Display problem Mac Mini running Yosmite
Image quality is very poor for Mac Mini running Yosmite connected via HDMI.
Adjusting overscan helps scaling, but pixelation and poor image quality is not changed (very blurry)
Using VGA/mini display route with same devices, image quality if far better showing that somehow mini conncected to HP monitor via HDMI could be improved via driver update.
Is there a driver update for Yosmite?
Only drivers found were for Windows:

Please help
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hello @adsben,
I understand that the image quality for your HP monitor is poor when connected to your Mac Mini, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
According to this document on using HP Monitors on a Mac:
"HP monitors are not supported in a Mac environment. However, newer Macs use graphics with VESA modes and can display to most HP LCD monitors. To do this, connect the monitor to the Mac while the Mac is off, and then turn on the MAC. The monitor should operate at 60Hz. The INF and software for the HP monitor are for Microsoft Windows and cannot be run in a standard MAC OS environment."
I hope this helps!

I downloaded and installed the: Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6 on my mac mini running 10.8.1, was I correct in doing this ?
I didn't see this update come up in "Software Update"
If I was not meant to install this update, would it cause ANY damage at all to my mac ( this is my second as I dropped the first )
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
The bottom of the page I link to says:
Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: MM51.0077.10
But when I click on "About this Mac" it says:
Boot ROM Version: MM51.0077.B10
SMC Version (system): 1.75f0
What does the additional "B" mean?
My mac mini is the Mid 2011 Model.
I am sorry if I am sounding super paranoid about this, but I don't want to have caused any permanent damage.Hello,
It's somewhere between almost impossible & impossible to install the wrong EFI Update with all the checks it does!
Mac mini (Mid 2011) with Intel graphics
Macmini5,1
MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
Mac mini (Mid 2011) with Radeon graphics
Macmini5,2
MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)
Macmini5,3
MM51.0077.B10 (EFI 1.6)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Not sure what the B means.
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
No, Firmware is unaffected by any OS change or re-install.
